Timbers Taven is a local dive bar with a mixed crowd. A coworker had their birthday celebration there so I stopped by. It happened to be karaoke night. Karaoke night was fun. There were some people who could really sing and some just having a good time. I enjoyed the entertainment. The drinks were okay. I had a Margarita with little too much mix. I didnt try the food. I had already ate. The crowd seemed to be having a good time. A few smokers but not overbearing. I didn't leave smelling like smoke so thats a win. read more

My wife and I go here a few times a month. Last Saturday night was August 31, they had a band here that was excellent. Played and sang really well, good rock and roll music. We enjoyed our time here. A friend raves about the burgers here. Omg was he ever wrong! Just got our order-first time-LAST TIME. She tells us 30 min for 2 burgers, fries and onion rings. Thought wow, they must be super busy. I truly feel like I was mislead by the reviews on Yelp. I can understand the indoor smoking - I truly can. If you are into consuming your food and drinks within a cloud of recirculated cigarette smoke puffed from the lungs of 20 other smokers between the ages of 40 and death, with no proper ventilation, in an old and dingy basement-like establishment, then more power to you! Found this place via Groupon - the website is NOTHING like the actual establishment. I was horrified when we walked in and I felt completely duped. It was too late to return the Groupon, so we marched right on. We were definitely out of place, although, I must say, our server was very sweet, and the older male bartender seems to be a local hero to the handful of people surrounding the bar. I got the vibe that he may be the owner of the place. Now, if you are familiar with my reviews - I would not care if the establishment was a crack-house if the food is good. Unfortunately, this was not the case during our visit. Our fries were cold ... like, COLD and just straight up a stick of grease with potato in it. I mean, how can you mess up fries? Our sweet server did get a fresher batch of fries, but it was just not working. The second serving was a HOT stick of grease with potato in it. I suspect that they drop the fries while the oil was not hot enough - which would explain the disgusting level of grease it had. Hot wings - I ordered the hottest flavor ... was not spicy at all. But, in all fairness, it was edible. Burger - meh. I dont even feel like saying anything else. Now, if you are still interested in checking this place out, then I suggest to find the groupon AND go to their very misleading website. Groupon will offer a $20 deal for $10 and their website offers a free drink if you are a new visitor. We used both and even with the coupon and the free beer, I still cannot bring myself to give this more than a one star. I would hate to mislead another Yelper. read more

I write a combined review of two visits. The first was December 2015 in which I had a 5 star experience. Unfortunately my return visit in October 2018 was a 1 star experience. In fairness, I offer an average of 3 star review. My first visit was during the holiday season and I was the unwitting participant in an "ugly sweater contest" in which I made several new friends and enjoyed some fantastic food, cheap cold beers and great music. It was such an amazing experience, I talked about it with everyone who learned of my visit to Georgia, and I shared many pictures of that visit to Timbers with them. My second (and my last) visit was during a business trip to Atlanta. I recommended this small locals bar to several other visitors with the promise of the best time Georgia had to offer. While enjoying some $1 tacos and a couple beers, I decided to play Georgia Lottery Keno. I bet $50 in 4 tickets. 3 out of 4 "won" back $34, but I was only paid $25. When I confronted the bartender about the $9 deficit, I was accused of lying and felt chastised about my seeming cheat. You see, 3 out 4 tickets had associated payouts, but only 2 were paid and 1 was reported back to me as "already paid". I asked how that could be when the 4 tickets were purchased from the same bartender just 15 minutes earlier and she hadn't previously paid me. She had no explanation other than to say she "was busy and don't remember". A formal complaint to the Georgia Lottery follows up this Yelp review. read more

I really loved this place. There isn't a large beer selection (and don't even think about asking for a micro brew), but the staff is as good as it gets. The food is just as wonderful as the staff. Don't know what you want to eat, just ask your server (who will likely be the bar tender) and she'll be glad to give you some suggestions. I believe the guy who cooks the food also brings out the food on a busy night so don't forget to give your compliments to the chef. It's not a super charming place (it is a bar afterall) but the staff and food definitely make up for what the decor lacks. They have live music on Friday nights and all kinds of fun stuff like Karaoke going on throughout the week. If you like hometown bars, friendly service and surprisingly good food (definitely try the wings!), then give this place a try. You won't be disappointed. read more

I'd been having a craving for some good wings for a while now, and I just happened to see an article on the AJC the other day about the best chicken wings in town. I wanted to go somewhere I hadn't heard of before, and since Red's was close to my house and got mentioned by several people commenting on the AJC article, I decided to give it a try. Man, am I glad I did. The restaurant itself (actually, it's really just a bar that serves food) is small and nothing to speak of... but the food? Oh man, the food. We got 20 of the medium wings and an order of tater tots with cheese. The wings were crispy, perfectly cooked, and flavorful without being drowned in sauce. The tater tots were also delicious (and tasted even better dunked in the ranch sauce they served with the wings). Our server (aka the bartender), Brittany, was very friendly and attentive. I would recommend this place without hesitation to anyone looking for really good wings. read more

I go way back with Terry, the owner, of Ref's Timbers. This is the cool dive bar of dive bars. I've been playing drums in this place on and off for years. If you want some dang good bar food ( plus steaks, crab and oysters) at great prices, this is the place to come. Larry can really cook it up downstairs. The staff are always friendly and the drinks are strong. Being a musician, I appreciate the fact that Terry still strongly supports live music. Come check out Teds Timbers, the oldest tavern in Smyrna (1968). I will give a ding though... better ventilation would help but I guess the bar would lose a little of its charm if it was smoke free. read more

Everybody else pretty much had different burgers and they said that they were pretty good. If I go back I'll probably stick with the burger. This place isn't much to look at from the outside. After pulling in to the parking lot, I almost pulled right back out. The lack of other food options in the area made me walk through the door anyway. I am glad I did. Although they don't seem to have the largest beer selection, Jeff the bar tender answered my questions and led me to a glass of Sweetwater 420. Very good choice! When I asked of they served food, Jeff's eyes lit up and he told me the food here rivals any restaurant in the area. On his advice I went with the prime rib sandwich which was excellent! Jeff said although most of their food comes from a distributer, their meat is hand selected at the meat market. The bar is starting to fill in and get busy now, but everyone seems happy and everyone has a drink in front of them. The patrons at the bar all seem sociable and are loving the jukebox tunes. I live in the Mableton/Smyrna area and have been looking for a great local dive bar. So I was pleasantly surprised to find this place on yelp. I went a couple of weeks ago and it was exactly that! The sign out front says the bar was established in 1968 and the decor looks like it hasn't been updated since the 70's. Wood paneling, faux wood bar top (formica maybe), and cheap old carpet. Despite this, I didn't get the impression that the place was dirty. When I arrived on a Sunday afternoon, the first thing I noticed was the heavy smoke and the back table where a few people were playing Texas hold 'em. There was a rowdy bunch at the tables near the door who were celebrating someone's birthday. I took a seat at the bar and was greeted by a friendly, but overworked bartender everyone called Cee Cee. The crowd was mostly older (50's and up), but with some in their 30's and 40's sprinkled in. There was also a good mix of Black and White patrons and most people seemed to know each other. Cee Cee asked if it was my first time there and when I responded "yes" she gave me shrug and a look like I was in for an experience. I guess the dive bar atmosphere is a turn off for some people. After a few minutes, I could tell this was definitely a working class bar and I'd describe many of the patrons as "characters." As many have said the beer selection isn't great, but it's adequate. This isn't the place for craft beers or a lot of imports. They did have Sweetwater 420 (one of our local craft beers in the Atlanta area) and Blue Moon on tap among the standard domestic brews (Miller, Budweiser, etc). I ordered a shot of Jameson Irish Whiskey and a Blue Moon along with some hot wings. Cee Cee brought my beer right away but got distracted and forgot my whiskey. I reminded her and she apologized and got it for me. The wings were pretty good, but not very spicy as others have noted. Other attractions to Red's Timbers were the many flat screen TV's showing sports (the Braves game and Pre-season Football were on) and the modern digital jukebox. This is Smyrna's oldest bar and that's what it feels like. The staff is friendly, courteous, addresses regulars by name and is smoker friendly. One must realize that this is a low ceiling, high smoking atmosphere. You might as well light up from the second hand smoke. However, strangely, you get used to it. Burgers? BEST in the area, bar none. I have been to FLIP and every other joint in Atlanta that purports to make a burger. I do not know where Red's gets their meat, but the cook is excellent and the burgers are the best within 20 miles. Don't believe me? Go there and get a mid rare burger and write back. TVs - more than enough, plenty of things on and you can even change the channel. Probably 10 TVs in this upstairs bar. The downstairs bar seems to have closed and that used to be pretty cool. Known as a "biker bar" don't be fooled. Just because you ride a Harley doesn't mean you aren't a mic'd person. Frankly the mixed crowd makes this place very unique on weekends. KENO and slots: they have these too. Beers: Too many to choose from and cheap! They don't upcharge like Vinings inn or other area bars paying steep overhead. You get a Budweiser for $3. I leave $5 and still save money. Bands: okay, it does get extremely loud when bands play but most acts are pretty good. This is often a starting place for area bands so you never know if you might see incredible performances or very poor. Large stage provides most bands the freedom to Play loud. If you want less than loud, bring ear plugs. Seriously! Yes, 5 stars because it does exactly what you want, is affordable, people are friendly and not pretentious. Owners are almost always around to talk with if you have issue. Bathrooms are borderline but again in line with Red's clientele. They aren't fancy, but clean enough and close so you don't miss much. Even when slammed there is enough room to move around and once you get a seat, it's unwritten but that's your seat for the night. Bartenders will even save your seat if you go outside for a second. Simply put, Red's delivers on food (fantastically varied menu for a neighborhood bar), greatest burgers in town, friendly and old. You want pretty and smoke free? Red's ain't your joint. read more

I love this place! Where do I start? The steak is amazing and they have best fried okra since I left my childhood farm! Love Mike who plays guitar and sings every Friday night! Can't beat the Friday night seafood special of 75 cent oysters, 4 dollar crab legs, etc. The bar tenders are out of this world. Yes, it is a dive, but it is THE BEST dive ever!
