The lady and I had the Dan Dan Noodles and the smoked pork with garlic sprouts. Which we ordered extra spicy. The smoked pork was thin strips of pork belly, stir-fried with garlic tops, ginger, garlic, and chili. The pork was cooked perfectly and the veggies were fresh as all get out. Needless to say it was awesome, but it was not spicy enough for us, maybe since I am white they held back. Dan Dan Noodles-Small bowl of noodles with a peanuty-seasme(y)-garlicky-chill(y) sauce. My GF and I agreed these alone were worth coming back. They were delicious, had a decent spice level. For $5.99 it was an excellent value. The boy had shrimp fried rice," with no spicy" as he says. Im not a huge fan of fried rice but the veggies tasted like they were brought in from the farm that morning, the shrimp were juicy and succulent. Yay! A place that serves close to authentic Chinese food! I'll try and make this short and simple. Pros: The food is flavorful. Everything tastes different in the best way possible. You get several flavors going on in each dish. They gave us a complimentary batch of dumplings! I don't know why, but they did and it was sweet of them. Their twice cooked pork is delicious. I don't typically eat pork, but I will for this dish. Servers are all very sweet and really attentive. I don't think my cup was ever left empty. I had virtually stopped eating Chinese until today!!! This place is in here killing the game. One of the reviewers on Yelp said the shrimp in the Kung Pao Shrimp haunts her and I now understand why! Get it! There something a little special about that shrimp and I know I will be back real soon to get it again. The Mongolian Beef and Green Onion Pancake were amazing! I couldn't stop eating this food. The service is good and your food comes out in a reasonable amount of time. This is a sit down dining establishment and none of that $1 per item business. This is a real Chinese Restaurant. You have to really impress me to get a 5 star rating, so this place definitely did not disappoint. This is kind of a hard review to write. If your preference for Chinese food is "Americanized" Chinese food (ie., Panda Express, PF Changs, Dragon Inn, Taipei Garden, etc) I think that's great and have no problem with that - but this place isn't for you. As several other reviewers have mentioned, this is a restaurant that serves authentic Sichuan dishes. Some of these may be off-putting to others (pork intestines, for example) but are traditional dishes that many folks, including myself, think are great. If you want to venture out just once and try something new, I'd recommend starting with the Dan Dan noodles, deep fried chicken or pork chops, or deep fried garlic spare ribs. That said, the best thing this place has going for it is that it's the only authentic Sichuan place in the IE (that I've found). I think that's why their clientele is primarily Asian. But it doesn't mean their food is great. Almost any place you find in SGV will serve significantly better food. The dishes they offer are the same, but they're just not as well executed. If this is your first experience with authentic Sichuan, you probably won't know any better and hopefully will think its great. I come here whenever I need a Chinese fix, and think the food is solid but there's no other options. Think of it like, if Terry's Burgers was the only burger in town. Went here for the first time expecting great things as all of my chinese friends rave about this place. Our waiter had a nose bleed and didn't bother to clean it up. He was helping us with a crusty bloody nose. Pretty cool, I mean thats how Chinese food is supposed to be right? Multiple hairs (Small eyelashes to full blown head hair) In my food and rice, AWESOME! [and I'm not phased by hair] The food was okay; I like spice but a lot of the food just tasted like an insane amount of pepper instead of spice... A small town on New Jersey is not usually where one finds exotic haute cuisine. And to be sure, that was the case in Dunellen NJ. Diners, family restaurants and if you've not surmised already, sweet and sour goo-based Chinese food mediocrity as is typical across most of the country. This all changed one day when a new Chinese joint opened in Dunellen known as "Chan's Garden". For most of us, Chan's opened our eyes to the potential of Chinese cuisine. In fact, ABC news food reporter Bob Lape (yes, that long ago) traveled from New York City to Dunellen to sample this unknown little place in an unknown little town and raved about it on television. It all changed after that. Limos from New York City itself would flow into Dunellen as curious and well heeled foodies came to see if it was indeed true. Could a tiny restaurant in a tiny town in a tiny state really rival or even surpass in many ways, the best of NYC's Chinatown? Yes, in fact, it did. What Chan's also did was usher in a new era of great Chinese cuisine outside of NYC. It seemed once impossible but it happened and we who lived there were all beneficiaries of it. It was not to last though. As these wonderful places opened, so too did they close. After we moved to California our friends 'back home' often lamented that they had not had a decent Chinese meal since their last trip "into the city" (and let this phrase serve as evidence of the origin of this piece). We often made pilgrimages to LA's Chinatown which frankly is more theatrical than gastronomical. I cannot say this exhaustively as there are many places there but we rarely left there with fond memories. When we moved to Rancho we assumed we that, being a smaller city, we'd have to go into the SG valley and seek out decent Chinese or have it forever become a memory. Not the most elegant Segway into a review of Red Chillies but this place is a culinary epiphany. I cannot recall ANY Chinese restaurant ANYWHERE that bests this place. Inevitably every dish we try, redefines the dish. the potato noodle dishes are simply as sublime as taste experiences get. And the Ma Po Tofu is frankly in it's own class. A piquant aroma of fresh chili peppers rises like a cloud of ambrosia as you hover over the dish and again, I know of no competition for this dish anywhere. One can go on about the dumplings, eggplant, spectacular pancakes, scallion and red bean, incredible tofu dishes, WOW in a word. This place could easily hold it's own in any neighborhood in San Francisco or New York. OK, a couple of caveats albeit minor. One I consider an asset but to some it may not be. The service is not great. The people are lovely and friendly to be sure and it's unusually clean. But expect to have to ask for everything. My only caveat here. The food is hot. Expect hot. Spicy hot. If you feel you cannot handle the 'heat', eat it anyway for in not doing so, you may deny yourself truly one of the great Chinese food experiences around. You do get used to it. My boyfriend and I love Red Chilli House! It is the only Chinese restaurant we eat at. Each time we go, we get Dan Dan Noodles, Kung Pao Chicken, and Green Onion Pancakes. We always talk about getting something else, but these make such a good combination with rice that we keep going back. The Dan Dan Noodles are wonderfully spicy, and so is the Kung Pao Chicken. The best thing about the chicken is that it is loaded with peanuts and green onions. Also, the red chilis are cut up so you don't get huge pieces. Love it! The food is also family-style, so order to share. The staff isn't always quick and can be a little short, but they aren't unfriendly; just to the point. Immediately upon coming home I had to get the pepto, because my stomach was not happy! We ordered the fish and tofu in curd sauce, string beans, peppered shrimp, fried rice and the dumpling soup. The fish and curd sauce had way too much peppercorn it was absolutely dreadful. It was rated with the two chili pepper symbols on the menu so we expected it too be hot, but there was no heat on the sauce or the fish. Instead the peppercorn simply overpowered the taste that it felt like we dipped our lips and tongues in drugs! The string beans was too salty, way way too salty. The peppered shrimp was decent it was probably the only thing that saved the meal. One of the better restaurants in the IE, especially if you are a fan of Szechuan cooking. Its basically full of asian people, which means its gotta be good right? We had the following and I was comparing them to another restaurant in Irvine (walnut & jeffrey plaza). Cold plate appetizers: Tripe was the highlight, highly recommended. The pig ear was really soft, lacked the texture that I expect. The cucumber was pretty average, but refreshing after you eat a bunch of the spicy dishes. Cold chopped chicken: Highly recommended. a bit on the salty side, but I guess everyone has a preference. Mapo tofu: Big fan of their version, they are generous with the spices and pepper which I liked a lot. Wish it was a bit cheaper tho, $8 for tofu is not cool. Very good chinese food. All my dishes were fresh and full of flavor. Even though they advertise some dishes are spicy, I did not taste the heat. I asked for chili and got tray with vinager, soy sauce, chili flakes in oil. I love spicy so would of appreciated some chilis or chili sauce. When you spend $20 or more you are given dumplings or noodles. I choose pork dumplings very good. I was charged double on my bill for drinks but when I pointed it out to waitress she apologized and removed extra charges. Overall great quality food. read more

Yummm... anyone who knows me well knows how much I love Szechuan food. Tried the boiled fish in spicy sauce, lamb with hot pepper, and potatoes with jalapeño. Absolute best Chinese food I've ever had and I can't remember a better meal in a very long time. I took the word of people on here and got the lamb chop and the pork tenderloin. The lamb was the best- most of it perfectly tender and delicious. Some on here said theirs was overcooked but our small pieces (it varies from tender meat on the bone along with smaller pieces which are more cooked) were like good beef jerky at the most cooked. Just enough spice and a pepper taste that was so good. The pork was great too- nice flavor and texture. We also got spicy shrimp which I liked maybe 3rd best (eat each bite with a peanut and some small red chili pieces) and from there dumplings which were good but didn't blow me away and a less spicy, less flavorful dish which consisted of small strings of pork I think with strings of black mushrooms, celery, etc. That one is slimy and is not recommended. Never had szechuan and was surprised that I didn't die from the heat- it is actually amazing (the heat wasn't bad at all- really nice, though some of my friends got some random extra surprise hot ones). I ate ample quantities of the pieces of pepper that are in the lamb and shrimp dish but didn't get overwhelmed. Yeah, if you're an uncultured wuss and stick to Panda Express and IHOP (note the one star below) stay away because there's flavor here, tremendous flavor fit for people who like food with heart. AND by the way, the service was great for us. They refilled glasses, served food with attention and no lag that I noticed. It looked nice I thought. I expected old 70s wallpaper falling off the walls, dreary lighting or something, weird musty smells, and uncaring servers. Everything was great to my relief. Great prices. 5 star for the Dan-Dan noodle. I can't say this is the most authentic one, but def a hot hot hot version. Really flavorful. Portion is huge. I also like their cold dish, the seaweed salad and peanuts are really good. Eggplant in fish sauce is delicious, just too oily, so watch out those who care about calories. Mapo tofu is not very authentic, not spicy enough. But it does have some of the Schezchuan pepper flavor. Overall it is of great value. The Red Chili house is probably the best Chinese food I've ever had outside LA. With an incredibly authentic selection and great seasoning, this is about as good as it gets. Despite being really authentic, all the servers speak good English and are friendly. I love this place and eat here really often. I've tried about half the menu and have never gotten anything that was bad, though their beef and fish dishes are definitely the standout for me and chicken is a little less amazing. The noodles and soups here are also fantastic. Whenever I go I always get extra to take home, the non-breaded dishes are awesome leftover. We have tried a number of Chinese food places, praying that we find a good one; and each time, we have been incredibly disappointed - either the food is swimming in oil, or the taste screams poor ingredients and cheap service. Fortunately, our friends recommended Red Chili House. What can I say, besides what a breath of fresh air this place is! First, it is effin delicious. Seriously, some of the best food to ever enter my mouth. Secondly, you can taste the quality of the ingredients and the TLC put into every dish. The prices are incredibly reasonable and the taste is nothing short of NOM NOM NOM! Third, the customer service is quite impeccable. We have been there a few times now, and each time we are blown away by their personnel. We have laughed with Lee (whose a really sweet waiter) and felt welcomed by countless others. It really is a nice change from most of the places out there. And finally, the WONTONS. Lord, do I love me some wontons. They have wonton soup which is a delicious broth smothered in a large portion of wantons or that same large portion of wontons in a chili sauce. Literally, makes me want to cry from sheer food happiness each in every time. Their portions, not to mention, are perfect for sharing, and make awesome left overs. A friend and I share the dan dan noodles and the ma po tofu (a la carte for both meaning they don't come with the soup). I thought the noodles were super plain - literally no veggies in them. I've had dan dan noodles before with thinly sliced veggies and roasted peanuts which made them much more flavorful. The ma po tofu was tasty but so incredibly spicy even when we asked for it to be mild. I thought it was very kind that the waiter brought my friend and I soup (which was vegetarian hot & sour) even though we ordered a la carte! They have great service and made the food quickly.
