On our way down to U of A for a basketball game - we decided to stop at the Red Garter on Speedway for an early dinner. Hasn't changed since we were there years ago ! Good bar/restaurant with good food. Known back in the day for their chicken wing specials. Today, we ordered something different - chicken cordon bleu sandwich. Very good - chicken, ham, cheese - yum ! Of course, we had to wash it down with a beer - beer specials for happy hour. Love this bar. Very chill environment and friendly staff.They aren't lying when the menu says best burgers in town. My bf and I are here almost every week. Sometimes I bring my laptop here bc they have WiFi and just drink a beer. Rest of the food is pretty good especially the wings even the Cobb salad etc. Drinks very reasonably priced, with a good selection. Great place to eat, drink, and watch sports. This review is basically based off of the service because I did not realize that food was served here and are before I came to meet up with my friends. The waitstaff is nice though can be at little unorganized. It makes sense since they are being pulled in a million directions. If you want to get a pool table I wish you luck and if you do have one, sit on it because a lot of people will come behind you to take it. The bartenders know how to make a good drink which is the most important thing in this type of establishment. I enjoyed it enough to where I need to come back and try the food. read more

First time here in years - not since they were in their old location. Really great atmosphere - comfortable, not too bright or noisy. The green onion & sour cream fries appetizer is fantastic! What an amazing dive! I visited late one night with my fiance. They were one of the few places open and still serving food at 11pm in tucson. Our waitress was lovely, really blunt, but so much fun. The food was affordable and delicious. My fiance even said that his burger was the best he's ever had in Tucson. (We are super big lindy's fans, so that says alot) If you want affordable, late night eats, that are also tasty this may be the place for you. read more

The absolute worst. Three visits so I've got a decent body of work. The staff are so rude, the food is horrendous and my not-at-all-cheap Jameson and ginger ale was watered down. Straw that broke the camel's back. My friend and I had started to make a thing out of going there before a movie at The Loft (right next door). I had an small, unopened clearly labeled bottle of water to bring with me to the movie. The waitress brusquely says we don't allow outside food or beverage in here, no diplomacy, nothing. I nicely and calmly (even though it was already pretty odd to me, I mean it's a little bottle of water) explained that I wasn't drinking it and it was to be opened at the movies. This smart aleck hack repeats the exact same line again, with no suggestions or nothing. Am I going to throw the bottle of water away? It's a hot day in Arizona. People carry water with them. Wow. I've never been so appalled in my entire life. A low-class joint perfectly representative of the bad side of Tucson. I was already on the fence because the last time, the bartender took about five minutes during a slow period to serve me and she had the personality of a condemned woman in prison or something. Their chicken fingers basket looks like something your children bring up to you for your birthday or something. I'm not one to rip a business quite like this, but they deserve it. The absolute, worst burger I've ever had! How do you screw up a burger?!? It had zero flavor. It was supposed to have thousand island dressing, but it didn't. I ask but a side of it and it was just colored Mayo! Again no flavor. The service was terrible as well! She didn't refill my soda, it took 20 minutes to get the check and another 20 minutes for her to run my card. All in all, stay away! Go to Native across the street instead. read more

You don't come to the garter for anything more than some beers and a solid burger. The black and bleu burger has my vote as the best one in town with the best price too. Keep in mind it is a Saloon. Went here once many years ago and just tried it again recently since they became a sponsor for my Kiwanis de Amigos' Tucson-Opoly game. We've been coming back regularly to try different sandwiches and burgers. Our favorites so far: Black & Blue Bacon Burger, Patty Melt and Reuben. Last night, we ordered Tots for a change. They are the best I've ever had--so crispy on the outside and seemingly NO GREASE! We try a different draft beer every time. This place is completely old school but perfectly clean and well-maintained. No chipped tables, ripped chairs or dirty floors here, and there are enough beer posters and neon signs to keep you entertained through the meal or watch sports on the many TVs. I commented food had been served undercooked or burned so they could know. I did not even want my comment highlighted by me, however they did. Instead of saying, we are sorry, thanks for the feedback I recieved retaliation every time I came in. It got increasingly aggressive and finally when I complained a server refused to seat and serve me. Telling me I complained so I would not be served. The manager on staff refused to take a complaint saying this person was her friend. Then I had a drunk in a mumu telling me I was rude, quoting things a random stranger would not know if the staff was not slandering me. I tried to be polite, when I was interrupted 3-4 times in 30 minutes, not even giving me a chance to put my conversation on hold, to respond. In 6 years I only commented on the food quality 3x. Yet the staff treated me as though I was a problem, not serving fully cooked non burned food. Instead their response is they cook their own food now. Awesome. Then it should still be consistent, not dripping in oil, scooped out, burned, or chunks of raw or varying degrees of being undercooked. I made a comment trying to give feedback. But instead of that I am gaslit. And when I respond to be quite clear the food is not ok how it's been served and they do need to address it. I am mistreated every visit and treated as rude leading up to that. Extremely unprofessional. I have watched people sit there 6-7 hours and not made to feel uncomfortable or pushed out as they are still drinking eating, which is what I experienced. So the issue was because I am chronically I'll, and go there they felt the right to treat me that way. A person spending 3.50 2x an hour, for 6 hours, spends $42 if that. And may come 3x a week. But I was spending $20 in one hour, 30 days a month, tipping well, being quiet, easy, telling them to take their time, and this is how I was treated. Eat somewhere else. A fantastic sushi restaurant has a better bar, great food, and is very close to the loft. Save yourself being treated as I was, or risking food poisoning eating here, and eat your food somewhere that will treat you well. Across the street is Native New Yorker, Famous Dave's, a pizza place. You do not need to put up with being treated poorly, just to eat somewhere before your movie. read more

I love the Red Garter. It was a long, hard road to get to love this place. It was not easy. But, with the help of Guinness beer, Amy the server, the San Francisco burger and friends that are always willing to come with me, the Red Garter and I found love. The first time we went, I got a veggie burger, and it was horrible. To be fair, a lot of times veggie burgers are revolting in restaurants because they don't get ordered or thrown out, so you get some pathetic, freezer burnt hockey puck. My husbands burger was delightful, so we went back, I think the next night, and I got a real burger. Oh my gosh. This place has the best burger in Tucson. They are just amazing, and juicy, and they have a zillion of them, and all of them are amazing. My personal favorite is the San Francisco, which is on sourdough bread with lettuce, onions, tomatoes and Thousand Island dressing. It's amazing. (Yes. I know a used the word "amazing" a lot for this burger, but that's what it is...so there). So, onto the service, which really is what made this road to loving this place to damn horrible. I really wanted to like this place. The food is awesome, the atmosphere is fun and very neighborhood-bar-y. But the service, until we had Amy as a server, was hideous. Servers were super rude, our drinks never got refilled, one of them took a LOT of sass with my brother who had just gotten home from being deployed (that one had me really upset). Then we met Amy, the shining beam of freaking sunlight. I always want to sit in her section (I hope the owner reads this. She is the reason I decided not to write off your establishment). Now, it is the perfect bar. It has great drinks for pretty cheap, stellar service, and the best burger this side of the Rio Grande. Or the other side. Go to here. Sit in Amy's section. I really dig this little bar. I would describe it as divey but with really good upkeep. There is a bar that runs along (most of) the length of the place and a dining area with cute old-school burgundy leather chairs. It is all carpeted so don't throw up. There are pool tables in the back and TVs (various sizes) everywhere so I can imagine this is a great place to watch games. College football was playing when I went. The food was surprisingly good. My burger was delicious and LOADED with green chilies, cheese, bacon, and sauteed onions. My fiancees burger and brother's sandwich were winners as well. The fries could have been better but it's all good. The menu boasts many burgers and sandwiches so variety is something Red Garter has going for them for sure. When i walked into this place i knew i wanted to play pool. There was like 9 or 10 tables and at 75 cents a play I was in. The waitresses came over pretty often so I would say service is good, and because they were cute this was a welcome sight. What made me come back here is their affordable prices and food. Ive met my sis here once and thought I'd try it again. If you want bar food... burgers, fried food, and chicken wings this is definitely the place to come to. Less than $8 for burgers and fries, dont see that much anymore.. We sat at the bar but I did notice alot of ppl coming in to eat dinner. Thats always a good sign. Its definitely an older bar with the decor to go with it but its kept up and clean. It had a Cheers atmosphere to me. The bartenders were friendly as well as the patrons. The only thing that held me back from giving this place 5 stars is that when we moved from the bar area to the pool table area it was really hot back there. There is nothing about this place that really stands out, but maybe thats why its such a comfortable place to go to. The beer selection is okay, the prices aren't bad, the jukebox plays okay music, and there's sports playing on the televisions. This is just a good no frills bar. Their hamburger is done very well, however. No fancy imported beef, no artisan bread, and no California-inspired condiments. Since my last review of this place, I have a new job that goes late into the night and I'm not a vegetarian anymore. With their kitchen open until 11, my family has come to really appreciate being able to get a decent burger after hours. And in reality, they are better than decent... They're delicious. Some of the best burgers in town no doubt. Everything food-wise seems to have an element of being home made, which is rare for a bar. Everything seems to be made with care. The atmosphere is fun and casual, and while the building distinctly screams "country", the music is often a fun mix of everything from queen to yngwie malmsteen to George strait. Pricing is average, I would say. Not cheap but also not overpriced. Service in the dining room can be a little lacking at times but usually not aggravatingly so. It is a bar, after all. I can't really complain about this place, as they provide a nice alternative for us late at night. As such they fill a rather large hole in the Tucson restaurant community as well. After coming here several times over the year, I have to compliment the kitchen staff: The kitchen outdid themselves today on the burgers and fries, and I give them 5 stars for the best burgers we've had so far in Arizona. I and the bf split swiss mushroom and the gauntlet burgers, and we ordered them rare this time. I confirmed that the kitchen staff make their own burgers, these are not pre-packaged, frozen patties, and they are THE BEST. I'm not exactly a fan of bar food, or even burger and beer joints, but this is the second time we've made a trip here specifically for the burgers, and I give them mad props. One of the best bars Tucson has to offer. A gorgeous inside set-up, with booths, tables and a long bar. Neon beer signs, whiskey mirrors and tin signs and all sorts of booze memorabilia EVERYWHERE. You'll never get bored looking around at everything. Perfect location, ever-so-slightly off the path of the UofA, but not a place where you'd feel uncomfortable if you are a twenty-something. Great neighborhood hang-out vibe, or a nice place to go after seeing a movie at the Loft Cinema for a fun dinner date or a night-cap. It is dive-y, but not slimy; not aggressively college or hip anti-college, or ever pretentious. It really is the perfect bowl of porridge, or in this case basket of chicken tenders and fries (only 6 or 7 bucks, can't remember but they always come out piping hot with your side of ranch/buffalo/BBQ/whatever). They've got 4 pool tables inside, 4 outside on a large smoking patio and free pool on Sundays and--I think but don't quote me--Wednesday. They also have darts and one of those casino game things, if that's your bag. The wait staff and bartenders have ALWAYS been pleasant, informative and helpful. They've never made a fuss over quarters or asking to change at least one TV to something not sports. It's typically a super chill mood most evenings/nights. Fridays and Saturdays get a little wild, but never insufferable like Maloney's or O'Malleys. Game days fill up, but in a fun way, never seen it get super aggro. The burgers are top notch yet simple, although they do have a rotating special burger and awesome pub-grub fish on Fridays for only like 7 or 8 bucks. They have the beautiful, eternal $2 pint of PBR, but also local craft brews on tap and a great selection of liquors, all decently priced. My friend who drinks Johnny Walker said their Black is set at the cheapest in town. All-in-all, if you don't care about flash or fancy drinks, love a fun place with a lot of heart and atmosphere, then you'll love this bar. read more
