Meh. Went there with some friends, entirely unimpressed. It wasn't a busy night, but the service was slow and just on this side of catty. Sure there are pool tables and it is large inside... but I'd rather not have to wave a dollar bill around to get a refill of water. I was drinking booze also, so it's not like I was just bugging them for water all the time. It literally took money to get the bartender's attention. After we left, I had to call back to see if my friend left her cell phone, and was treated very uncourteously (b**chy) on the phone, so I asked to speak with the manager... wouldn't you know it, I already was. I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 b/c the beer was cold, and the wings were ok. I won't give that establishment my money again. read more

I was here for only a couple of hours this past Saturday but it was a great bar to get out of the "regular" 4th ave and downtown scene but it's still close to the UofA (Speedway and Country Club). They have an above average beer selection which always gets my attention. As for cocktails, a couple of my friends were drinking Fireball Whiskey Old Fashions and the bartender made a decent Old Fashioned if I do say so myself! They have a good amount of pool tables. It looked like player's skill range ranged from "only when drunk" to "I bring my own stick to the bar". I am a big fan of Reuben sandwiches. A really good one in town has eluded me until I found one at the Red Garter. I will stop short of saying it's the best one I have had, but I really enjoyed it. It had perfectly proportioned amounts of pastrami, sauerkraut, swiss cheese and 1000 island dressing. My wife had the club, which was piled about six inches high with turkey, ham and bacon... just to name the main ingredients. She said it was moist and "very good". Food and drink prices were reasonable. $2 for PBR pints and my wife's margarita was about four bucks. Most menu items are under $7. You can add a side for $1.25. Notes and anecdotes: The decor is definitely outdated but isn't that part of the charm of dive bars? The place is really dark inside. When we first walked in our eyes took some time to adjust to the dim lighting. The server handed us menus and noticed us struggling to try to read them so she brought us a flashlight. I really gotta start carrying a flashlight with me. Lots of pool tables, a few video games and a long bar. TV's all over.... your usual sports/dive bar setup. I found my Reuben. It will be hard for me to force myself to try other stuff on the menu but I think I am up to the task. read more

This place is very close to getting 4 stars from me. The burgers are really good, the drinks are reasonably priced and the staff couldn't be nicer. I always feel comfortable and enjoy myself. Seriously good bar and food. A real 70s a vibe in the bar area with the dark wood paneling. Lots of TVs for sports. Drinks really good, great place for beer and decent mixed drinks. The barfood is wonderful too, I've had some chili and sandwiches and enjoyed them. Good prices. Lots and lots of pool tables although a bit cramped so when it is busy, not easy to do. Plenty of seating indoors and out and smokers can have their drinks outside on a nice patio. I think there is a dart board there as well. Plenty of parking. Very conveniently located near the Loft Theater, so I love to get my drink on and see a movie, or vice versa. This is a good place to bring friends or groups and have a lot of fun. read more

This place is a Tucson staple!!! Never mind that, it's also EASILY the best place in town to get a burger and a brew!!! I've been lucky to live close to them the last year, but even now that I'm moving farther away, I will still be making the trip back to visit them!!! Decent food and I like the sports, but when it takes an hour or more to get served....especially by the guy who completely ignores you to serve others, it just isn't worth it. Maybe he was racist, maybe my friend wasn't showing enough cleavage for his liking who knows, all I know was my friend stood right in front of the cash register next to where the servers came to pick up orders and got completely ignored while young girls got served almost immediately. Wonderful place to play a game of pool. Centrally located. Nice bar, plenty of TVs to watch whatever game (or games) might be on. The billiards area is located a little off to the side form the main bar. Nice outdoors area for the smokers as well, although I am unsure whether or not you can bring your drink out there with you. Best hamburger in town! Cooked just the way I like it, right after it gets done screaming. I love being Burger Kinged. I had a combination of the Swiss burger and southwest burger. Bacon, mushrooms, Swiss cheese and yummy bar-b-que sauce. The bread was good too, but I left most of it because the burger was so large. The onion rings were so good I skipped the ketchup. I held back a star because when I walked in a waitress walked by me without acknowledged I was there. The bartender looked up but didn't give a nod or anything. I know it's not Cheers but still a howdy ma'am would have been nice. I got a little concerned that maybe I had stepped into a time warp and was in a 1950's bar. I did a check for other dark faces and found one that was much lighter than mine so, I began to relax. Once my waitress came over to greet me (I'd been sitting about 4 minutes) she was genuinely very friendly. So, let's give them back 1/2 a star. The jukebox is off the hook. All my old favorite rock-n-roll songs were playing. There's ton's of TVs for you sports fans. It is a little pricey. I was expecting some Happy Hour pricing as it was 5pm. But you get what you pay for in this world. I'm a big bathroom nut. If a place has a nice clean bathroom, I'm going to spend a lot of time there. My first visit here since being kicked out on New Years Eve when I was like 19. I heard the food was not bad and so I decided to give it a shot. Our server was friendly and suggested the wings and/or one of their burgers. Being that I am a wing nut, I ordered wings and a dinner salad. The food comes out in like wicker baskets, it was a little odd. The salad was actually in a small bowl inside one of the baskets, which made it appear larger than it was. The salad was a run of the mill side salad but the server it with little pieces of toast that are buttery and delicious. The wings had very food flavor, I really liked the sauce. They also were cooked well, but they were very small and almost all of them were wings, very few drumettes. I am going to try this place again. It is definitely an older place, the decor inside is from another time in life but it looks cool. In typical bar fashion, there are like zero windows so it is a bit dark for lunch. I'm updating because I still love this place and think it's some of the best bar food around (fresh ingredients, cooked to order) but also because it's a great "dive" bar if you are trying to eat low-carb. My experience here has not been the greatest unfortunately. I do enjoy the atmosphere and overall ambiance of Red Garter, I am from Wisconsin so it reminds me a little of being at home in a supper club with the wood paneling walls and decor, but the service could be better. My first time here, a friend and I both ordered Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy, mine looked okay but tasted funny and hers looked nothing like mine and tasted nothing like Summer Shandy. Again, I'm from WI and this is my favorite beer so I know what it should taste like. We asked the bar tender and she insisted that they were both Summer Shandy and nothing was wrong. After we further insisted that something was wrong, she reluctantly went and looked at the taps. She came back and said that the kegs were being changed and to the wrong tap. She immediately apologized and re-poured both beers, which we were both happy about. I do enjoy coming here because of the relativity to my house, but I would appreciate the service from the bartenders to be more inviting and welcoming on a normal basis. read more

There's a group of us that go Tuesday evenings after "fighter practice" out at Reid Park. In short, the staff is friendly and charming! Sometimes a bit slow, but they make up for it in the quality of their service, drinks, and food. Speaking of, like I said, service is pretty darned good, the servers know their customers and their quirks and special wants. They've made Painkiller (rum drink I discovered in the Caribbean Islands earlier in the year), for me that is pretty darned closed to the original and one of my favorite drinks, and they have pretty fabulous (and HUGE) salads, as well as a variety of tasty burgers, and messy-but-oh-so-yummy wings! read more

The Red Garter is a classic Tucson dive bar distinguished by juicy, decadent burgers and hot, melt-in-your-mouth fries, quality pool tables, a bangin juke box and enormous TVs tuned to every sport from curling to skeet shooting. I've been half in love with the Garter for longer than I can remember, although we've never been serious. The Garter is like that hot but crazy person you're too ashamed to be seen with. Yes, some of the red vinyl booths are torn and the carpet is stained, but you're just as likely to be seated next to a local newscaster or fighter pilot as a toothless hobo. The dim lighting encourages privacy and anonymity. The poker-faced barmaids pour with a heavy hand, and their eyes tell you they've seen more than most federal prison guards. We left as usual full-bellied, smiling and slightly embarrassed after a rare under-twenty dinner (including drinks). read more

This is an easy place to love. The burgers are great, the service is very friendly and welcoming (they say hello and bye without it sounding like they are being watched and forced to according to a "greeting policy"). My wife and I are in our late 30s and stop in at least once a week after work. The prices are very reasonable and there is plenty of parking. I would love to see more green salad/healthy choices on the menu but hey it is bar food! If I need upscale I can always go to the B-Line on 4th. read more

Definitely a fun environment to be and they have plenty of TVs! we had already eaten dinner so we just got beers and the combo appetizer which came with deep fried mushrooms, zucchini and onion rings.
