Having heard so much about the Red Hook Lobster Pound, I and one of my friends switched our annual lobster roll outing from Fairway to Red Hook. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and the service is welcoming. The New England style lobster rolls we had (mine with salad and my buddy with fries) were well made and tasty. In fact the only thing that was difficult was the parking which certainly was not the Pound's fault! So you are now asking...if everything was so good, why only 3 stars? Well, as nice as it was, I did not think that the lobster roll was worth $25 when a similar lobster roll at Fairway is about $12 (both places give you coleslaw and the Pound also gives you a side which Fairway does not) nor $8 better than at the Brooklyn Luke's Lobster. So while I enjoyed the lobster roll, I have evaluated them as just an "A-OK" based on value compared to their competition. But if price is not a concern, or if you are willing to pay a bit extra for atmosphere, I think you will really enjoy eating here! read more

It was a Tuesday evening and the place wasn't that busy or full, but poppin. Val greeded me with the biggest of smile. I told her it was first time there and I'm a Yelper. She smiled and welcomed me. I ordered the "Down East" chowder which was very very good. I also ordered the Connecticut Lobster roll, which was very good and tasty but a little over priced for the severing size and the fish tacos came with rice and beans, which was also very good and tasty. Pros: Food was very good-***** Servers were attentive. The Owner is there and engaging (Watched her carry a case of Coronas from the back. Nice!) Cons: I waited 35 minutes for my food. I got to Brooklyn Flea last Sunday around noon. The line was about 20 people and moved along pretty steadily. Lobster rolls are $13 each. What the sign doesn't tell you is that they offer two types of lobster rolls - New England (cold, with mayo) and Connecticut (warm, buttered). I started salivating as we got closer, not to mention I was starving despite the half almond croissant from Almondine consumed a few minutes earlier. My friend and I settled on each getting a CT roll and sharing a NE. Both were heavenly and had chunks of lobster. The CT one was simply flavored. This is made to order so we had to wait a few minutes. The NE one was just as good. The mayo was really light. Make sure you eat it immediately before the bread gets soaked from the water? from the lobster roll. Bread is nicely toasted, but it is not a hot dog roll, just plain toasted bread. Yes, they actually do give a lot of lobster meat but it lacked a lot of flavor. It was nice that my roll was stuffed with lobster meat but without the seasoning and such it doesn't taste as good. We had an hour to kill before a concert around the corner, so we decided to finally try the Red Hook Lobster Pound. It was a Thursday night and the dining room was almost completely empty. It seemed like there were 3-4 front of house staff on the floor, but it took them a long time to acknowledge and seat us. This seemed to be the theme the night (not just for us). We ordered the new england clam chowder, fish and chips, and classic lobster roll. The clam chowder was probably my favorite, standing out against other clam chowders I've had before. The fish and chips were well seasoned, although the breading was a bit salty for the SO's taste (and he loves salt). The fries were cooked perfectly. The lobster roll was a decent sized portion, they definitely did not skimp on the lobster, which I appreciate. The sweet potato fries were cooked well, but needed salt. In general, their portions are decent and worth the price. I really wish I could give half stars, but I'll round up to be fair. Maybe it was a fluke but overall, I was unimpressed due to the slow inattentive service. Whenever it takes too much effort for me to flag down a server, it cuts into my enjoyment of the meal. This is such a huge deal breaker for me. I would come back again and give them another shot with the hopes that service is better. read more

Oddly, I marked this lobster place not for its lobster but for its Burger. So naturally, I had to order the burger. My wife ordered the lobster - so we could get a taste of both. Cutting straight to the chase, the lobster roll is a low return on investment. Its a lot of $$ for a small amount of lobster meat. Admittedly, neither one of us is a connoisseur of lobster meat so we couldn't really comment on the quality of that. But the bread was to die for. I made a reservation at Lobster Pound, a restaurant I've been frequenting almost since its inception. When I tried to cancel my reservation by calling the restaurant, I couldn't get through so I finally left a message, They charged me $50 regardless of my informing them of my attempts and the message. Came here on Friday evening of Labor Day weekend w husband and one of the kids. Had reserved a " patio " table but never having been here before, didn't realize that really meant in a sidewalk box. It was fine but I think the inside was probably a better choice. Anyhow. The loaded fries were our starter as theyre husband's three favorite things - potatoes, lobster and cheese. He LOVED them and I was easily able to control myself and not eat more than four... as Im not a fan of cheese on seafood and the whole effect was a tad too salty. For our mains I got the lobster bisque - solidly good, decent portion, strong lobster and sherry balance. Also the crispy brussels (to share)- very nicely done and worth the try if youre a brussels fan. Seafood guy got the Connecticut lobster roll (they offer four types) and declared it a winner. I noticed you can order 2,3 or 4 extra ounces of lobster on your roll. Thankfully, I dont think he saw this small print. Son got the seafood buccatini that came with lots of mussels, clams snd shrimp piled on top. He seemed to like it as he was quiet for quite a while. They have enough not lobster items on menu but not a bunch....I dont know youd come down here unless for lobster though. They have the "famous" Steve's key lime pie on their dessert menu so of course I needed to take one to eat later. Worked up a decent appetite while at the IKEA in Red Hook. Just so happnened to pass by Red Hook Lobster Pound. I've tried their stuff before at one of the food festivals in Manhattan and it wasn't all that. Benefit of the doubt, maybe it wasn't as good as it could have been because it was off site and not their restaurant. Anywho...I gave them another shot. Decor: exactly what you would expect from a lobster place. Wood everywhere. Pieces of boats decorating the venue. If I had to label it I'd say a nautical meets Cajun bayou type feel...if that makes any sense. Service: about as pleasant as you could ask for. Smiles and hellos from the folks you encounter. They didn't have to go menus so the waitress let me take one of their regular menus to the car so my wife and I could glance over it. That was nice of her. Food: when at a lobster place, I do my best to make sure I try several items that sound appetizing and also won't break my bank. With that being said I got the fried pickles, the Connecticut (lobster poached in lemon and butter served warm and topped with paprika and scallions), the fried lobster roll (fried lobster tossed in lobster caramel with kewpi mayo and scallions), the old bay chicken sandwich, and a lemonade. - Fried Pickles: probably some of the best I've ever had. Chunky, crunchy, juicy, flavorful pickle nuggets. Might be my favorite item out of everything ordered. - The Connecticut: wasn't impressed. Chunks of lobster (that didn't completely fill the bun), hints lemon and some butter. Nothing special. The bread was nicely toasted though. - The Fried Lobster Roll: better then the Connecticut in my opinion. Huge chunks of fried lobster with a bit of sweetness from the caramel. The bun got a little soggy towards the end but that could have been because I didn't eat it soon enough. I would definitely order this again. - The Old Bay Chicken Sandwich: Anything with old bay in the name is usually something salty that tastes like crabs. To my surprise, it wasn't. You taste the old bay but it wasn't overpowering. The chicken was a little dry but the dryness is slightly offset with the pickles and tomato. Misc.: I've heard sooooooo much about this place and for the high prices they charge, I was expecting to be blown away. Sad to say, I was a little disappointed in the end. There were other things i wanted to try but i definitely wasn't looking to pay in the $100 range for some finger foods for 2 people. I did like the variety of their menu but i don't know if that's enough to bring me back there...unless someone who's pallet I trust recommends something that I haven't had. I enjoyed the fries, though a little over-salted. The bun wasn't anything special and the lobster wasn't as fresh/seasoned as I expected it to be. I thought it could have been more moist but there didn't seem to be any butter or tasteful seasoning on it mentioned in the meal's description. When I've had lobster in the past it has been light and only slightly chewy, but this felt more dense and much chewier. If I had to go again I would go for the classic lobster roll because this option didn't quite do it for me. Fun atmosphere though! read more

I've been to Red Hook Lobster two or three times. I am always on the lookout for a good NYC lobster roll. I used to only eat them when I was in New England. It is certainly difficult to pay what I pay in NY compared to the amount of lobster you get in Maine for a fraction of the price. But I will say that up until now Red Hook Lobster Pound has my favorite NYC lobster roll. Not cheap at $25 a piece, but they have a healthy amount of big chunks of lobster. You know what you're eating. It isn't a mystery. I usually eat both styles (Connecticut and Maine). I've also had their oysters Rockefeller and they are very good too. After my trip to IKEA, I decided to forgo the amazing meatballs served at IKEA and try Red Hook Lobster. It was a good decision as I was delighted with the service and the atmosphere plus there was no wait time. I started off with the cheesy lobster fries; the fries were loaded with five different cheeses and it was a melt made in heaven it needed more lobster in it ; none the less it was very good. My next choice was the Caramelized lobster Brussels sprouts, the Brussels sprouts had a sweet and nice grilled taste - fantastic !!!! My final selection was The Connecticut lobster roll -all I can say is wow the bread was buttery but not soaked with butter and the lobster was coated perfectly not overwhelmed with mayo. Visited Red Hook Lobster Pound on a week day for dinner with my fiancé. We reserved online for outside seating which was helpful since we have a pup and love taking him out to dinner with us but don't like to wait if all tables are taken. Just be aware, if you don't show for you reservation, they will charge you a fee. On to the food! For our appetizer round, we got the lobster cheese fries. These were phenomenal! Perfect amount of melt in your mouth lobster and delicious cheesy fries. For my main course, I had to go with the Maine style lobster roll. I traveled to Maine for work a lot so my expectations were high. Once again, the lobster was fresh and melted in my mouth. The flavors were lacking a bit for my taste though. My fiancée had the crab dinner and thoroughly enjoyed the crab legs even though they were a bit difficult to crack open and on the smaller side. Overall our experience was good. We've been here numerous times and for the most part have been very pleased. There was one time when we had a problem with the owner who wouldn't take off an extra charge we weren't told about in advance, which we thought was very bad business and poor customer service. We picked up lobster dinners tonight and when we opened the bag we saw a big mess of lobsters cut in halves, mixed together with containers of butter that opened up and spilled everywhere, lemons, four little pieces of corn - 2 of which were terrible and should not have been served at all and red potatoes. It was all just one big, unappealing mess. Things should have been put in separate bags and packaged more appropriately. Shame on them for putting in 2 rotten pieces of corn. The lobsters were ok but not delectable as they have been in the past. Very disappointed and spent a lot of money. read more

At 5'10"and 155 lbs, I'm not a big guy but would have needed 2 lobster rolls just to feel satisfied. I came here because many articles listed Red Hook as one of the best lobster rolls in NYC...this verdict is questionable to me. The lobster meat didn't taste fresh or have any real flavor and the bread vessel was ordinary, lacking textural significance. Definitely off the beaten path, RHLP was a bit of a hike since we had chosen to walk it. But is was so worth it!! We were very lucky to get sat as quickly as we did since we were only a party of two. The people right in front of us were quoted a 30 minute wait for their party of 4. We were sat literally next to the food prep area, so we could see through the glass as they made the dishes. All of this conspired to create a soggy bun and c'mon, who wants that? Hubby had better luck with his Fish & Chips. When I arrived, I discovered that the lobster roll was priced the same as a whole lobster dinner on Wednesday and since you get more lobster meat in the whole lobster that I'd have to do that. The food here taste fresh and the flavors are not overbearing. I got the big pot and shared it with my GF. It was filling for us both. The garlic wasnt overpowering, the flavors married well between the WHOLE lobster and the mussles. The clams and the shrimp were on point as well, I couldn't stop smiling and dancing as I ate.
