When I first walked in, I was expecting the delectable smell of the pit, you know the cherry, or hickory wood smell. That beautiful true pit bbq smell that engulfs you when walk into a small bbq restaurant, well needless to say it's not there! This should have been the first hint, and warning sign if things to come. Now to the service. The young host seemed annoyed when I didn't take his choice for where he wanted to seat me. I never, ever sit next to the entrance, bathroom, or kitchen! Then he wanted to seat me next to a group of men who were sitting at one table but were spilling into the table he was offering, that was a no! I took a table in the back, clear visuals of everything, especially the front door. The waitress well, clearly she just wanted to take my order. When I ordered my food, I asked about corn bread instead of biscuits with my meal. Well, that seemed to be a stretch, because she said they may be out. How would that even be possible in an advertised Memphis style Bbq restaurant, additionally it was only noon! Then she came back with a basket, dropped them on the table like it was a chore to find four miniature cornbread muffins! Now to the food! Memphis style bbq where? I have been to Memphis many times, eaten AMAZING bbq there, and, well, Red, Hot, and Blue nice try, you get an "E" for effort. Smothering your ribs in dry rub does not make a Memphis bbq!. Now the brisket, oh the poor sad brisket. It tasted like a crockpot cooked pot roast flavored with bbq spices. It was dry, had a lot of fat, hence the pot roast reference, and the meat had an odd grayish color to it. I hope it wasn't heated in the microwave, well that would explain the color. Oh, Gordon Ramsey would lose it for sure! I did notice a man walking around, I believe it was the manager or owner, however, he never really made contact with any table, introduced himself, nothing. Maybe with the people he knew. The restaurant is not the size of a banquet hall, and greeting his customers would not have been difficult. Needless to say, this is not on my list of restaurants to return to. I wish them nothing but luck in perfecting there attempt at true Memphis Bbq, because right now, not even close. read more

Not impressed at all We recently visited Red Hot and Blue in Williamsburg VA and this place is no where near as good. The service is fine, but Paul and I were not impressed with the food. Everything is subpar compared to other locations. Baked beans seemed as though they came out of a can, brisket was mostly fat, french fries undercooked... It was average at best. Also and this is not exactly their fault, but we were sat near the bar and had to listen to this arrogant loud mouth woman the whole time. This place is not nearly as good as other Red Hot and Blue locations. You have been warned. read more

Had an excellent lunch. The atmosphere of the restaurant was a perfect fit for the historic section of Laurel. I started with the cheese fries. Placed an online order for a wings and ribs combo with hush puppies and collard greens. Drove 25 minutes to pick it up and was throughly disappointed when I drove 25 minutes back home and started eating unseasoned food. The "signature bbq" sauce was non existent on their ribs. Thankfully I had some Kraft bbq sauce to add on top. The hot Buffalo wings were flavorless and colorless. I couldn't even manage to salvage those. The collard greens literally had no taste to them. I've been going to the Red Hot and Blue in Laurel for over 20 years. Over the years, the menu and food has remained consistent and good. I especially like the nachos and fried catfish. The staff member named Jose is very pleasant and has been working at the Laurel location for years. He is friendly and always makes the dinning experience nice. I gave this location five stars because I've never had a bad dinning experience in the 20 plus years I've been patronizing this location. I went to the one in Annapolis once and was disappointed with the quality of food. I highly recommend the Laurel location. You won't be disappointed. When we moved to the area we had several people recommend RH&B. But, we should have walked out as soon as we walked in and were hit with the sticky-feeling, off-scented place. We tried a bunch of items, but actually none were good, warm, or fresh. The worst was probably the caramelized burnt ends. They were not caramelized, just some bbq sauce squirted in top of the plate, and were pure fat, not rendered, not burnt. We actually could not swallow these. Onion brick was obviously cooked in old, too-cold oil as it was just greasy and soggy, musty, and the batter didn't stay on the onions. Everything was awful and the potato salad They do not trim their brisket so you need to do that yourself or expect large wads of fat every other bite. The ribs were like boot leather, super tough. I imagine they were left over from last night but no respectable restaurant would serve thse ribs. The beans are full of onions qnd peppers and the first thing you taste. This is not the Country Kitchen in Wallace, NC, but it's as good as you're going to do around here for commercial Memphis style Q. The space is broken up into two rooms and a bar, so it feels a little more homey than most. They follow through on the Blues theme with the music and the photos and posters that fill the walls - look for the one of very young Elvis. The ribs are meaty, moderately smokey, and cooked to just a little bit of chew. I get them dry and add a little Mojo Mild sauce. The pulled pork is my usual, with the Carolina vinegar sauce and a sprinkling of spice rub from the shaker on the table. Great potato salad, standard cole slaw, nice barbecue beans. One side that I especially love is the store-baked rolls, though a little birdie told me between pouring drinks that they source the dough from a local gourmet bakery. Tip - pull the butter out of the basket immediately, or the hot roll will melt it. Real iced tea and lemonade. Large portions (I've never had room for desert) and quick delivery by a runner in a "Pit Crew" tee shirt. Service? I went with a friend who was doing the Atkins diet, and when she asked if she could trade the two sides for a salad, the reply was "which dressing would you like on that?" Worst ribs I've ever had. They were tougher than shoe leather, and the intramuscular fat wasn't broken down at all. The corn bread were little hard muffins with zero flavor. Canned baked beans! Well butter my butt and call me Betty, this is some damn good chopped pork! In town for a couple of days and staying just north of DC. Looking for a place to eat I of course checked out Yelp and in the immediate area this came up as one of the better rated places around. I asked a couple of locals and hey up comes the name again, hmmm. Now I figured this was a for sure lunch stop, and I was right. I sat at the bar for lunch and had some sweet tea and asked the bartender what her favorite was. The answer came out quick, seemed honest and it started with chopped and ended in Pork so how could I say no. Bring it on. The sandwich was fantastic and very tender, some of the best chopped pork I've ever had. Good enough I started planning dinner the next night! Came back for dinner the next night and this time I changed it up, I sat at the bar and ordered from the menu. Great list of meats with and some interesting soups and things. I tried the Beef brisket and got it chopped instead of sliced (my theory is its less likely to be chewy). Just like the pork for lunch the day before this was some of the best brisket I've had. Very tender, not at all chewy and great flavor. There were some nice pieces of bark mixed in that just made my taste-buds do a little jig! Although a BBQ chain, we like it better than its competitors (so far). SX opted for the 5 Meat Taste (comes with a sample of pork ribs, shredded beef shortrib, pulled chicken, pulled pork, and sausage) with sides of potato salad and beans. I tried the Delta Double, which is their two meat platter of pork ribs and sausage with sides of coleslaw and beans. We also ordered a side of hush puppies. It was only $1.99, but there was a cereal bowl full of hush puppies! The beans are pretty generic, but tasty. The coleslaw wasn't overly dressed with mayo which was pleasant change from other coleslaws I've had. The pork ribs here were pretty good. We ordered ours dry rubbed and like to add the sauce ourselves. They were pretty tender and well smoked. The sausage was 2nd runner up for our favorite meat here. A nice snap of the casing, full of flavor and smokiness. The pulled chicken was surprisingly moist. The beef was the most disappointing, as it just tasted like regular beef shortrib (no smokey flavor or anything). read more

An old favorite of ours, Red, Hot And Blue still delivers the best Barbeque food in the Laurel area. I love the catfish, my Margarita loves the wet ribs and the smoked chicken. I recommend their Brunswick Stew or their homemade Gumbo. I was so hungry, that I was unable to control myself so I ate before I did this review, but next time I'll provide pics of the actual food. This is a nice local restaurant for BBQ. I stopped by as per a friend's suggestion and we ordered the Red Hot & Blue Nachos. The order comes with pulled chicken, cheeses, tomatoes, sour cheese, and pretty much anything else you could ask for. The plate cost roughly $10 and I felt like it was worth the money. The portion was pretty generous and we couldn't finish more than half of the food. The service was quick and although I'm not normally a fan of BBQ, I would go back to try more of their menu. read more

Orders are carelessly put together and usually one item is wrong. Today, the coleslaw was missing. The ribs tasted burnt, with no smoky taste. Very disappointed. Ordered catering for a small get-together, online ordering was easy. Received a confirmation email when order was received and another one confirming the order. The order was ready on time, carefully packaged, and manager helped me load it in my trunk. Everything was delicious. This is a great local place for BBQ, better than Kloby's and Mission BBQ, IMHO. There is rarely a wait, and the service is usually very prompt. I can't recall ever being pissed about server speed or quality, and have been going to this location for close to 30 years. I've always been a fan of the pulled pork sandwich, and the pulled chicken is also good. The dry ribs are awesome; I'd never had them, and tried them at the suggestion of a friend about 20 years ago. I was NOT disappointed! To this day I check every BBQ place I go to, to see if they have dry ribs ... most don't. The potato salad may be the best I've EVER had; we get extra every time we order (especially take-out). The cole slaw is pretty good; I'm super picky, and can't think of anyone else offhand that has better. My wife, who is about 90% vegetarian, cannot resist this place either, which gives you an idea of quality. We're heading back tonight, as a matter of fact! There's plenty of free parking out back, so do yourself a favor and check it out. read more

Very disappointed. This used to be one of our favorite restaurants in the 1990's. When we went there on a recent Sunday evening, we thought the lack of customers was due to Sunday evening/Ravens game. We ordered two full racks of ribs, one with traditional sauce and one with dry rub. Both were tough to the point of being inedible. Could barely cut with a steak knife, hardly 'fall-off-the bone' as we usually expect from ribs. Manager replaced both with a to-go order, but when we got them home, they were slightly better, but definitely not tender or fall off the bone. We plan to have to cook them ourselves in a long, slow oven and hope they become edible. We now understand why the place was empty. So sad....especially when the price was $32/rack. I need to start this with a disclaimer. I am a native Memphian. I take my barbecue very, very seriously. I have been bereft of decent barbecue since moving to Maryland, and I definitely take a much harder look at anyone who claims to offer 'Memphis-style' anything. So we were driving back from DC, hungry, and decided to stop at Red Hot and Blue. I wasn't expecting a good experience. Overall, I was somewhat pleasantly surprised at some things and disappointed with others. Strong sweet tea...check. Decent version of a Hurricane...check. Catfish fingers appetizer...almost. The fish was nicely fried, not overdone. The breading was...odd. Not bad, but not what I expect. Needed salt and pepper in that batter, and more cornmeal. I would probably order it again, but wouldn't travel to get it. We ordered two combinations. The ribs, dry seasoned, were actually very good. Nice bark, nice smoke, tender. Their mild sauce is more Memphis than any sauce I have seen up here, so that was a pleasant surprise. The smoked sausage was...well, it was full of black pepper. All you could really taste was black pepper. Probably should have put some of that black pepper in the catfish breading and not overwhelmed the sausage. The pulled pork was a huge disappointment. It was tender, but had almost no flavor. Tasted like it had been slow cooked in an oven or crock pot, not slow smoked on a grill. I don't think I have ever drowned a serving of pulled pork in so.much sauce to give it flavor before. I didn't finish it, which is not normal for me as my husband can tell you. The beans were tasty, and I was pleasantly surprised that they had that hint of bell pepper I am used to in them. The slaw was bland, needed salt, pepper...something. It shouldn't taste like just raw cabbage with mayo. The service was great, very friendly and efficient. The decor was comfortable and familiar. Over all it wasn't a bad experience, but not one I would drive any distance to have, either. If we stop by there again, I will stick to the ribs. read more

Red Hot and Blue is still our favorite "cheat meal" establishment, and the best BBQ in a wide area around Laurel. Pork platter and sandwiches, brunswick stew and onion basket are definite favorites. Service is always good, friendly and attentive, and a decent selection of beers are reasonably priced (THAT's rare in the DMV!). RHB really embodies the eccentric spirit of Main Street Laurel. The 1 is ONLY for the tenderness of the meat. You can't just slather sauce on unseasoned meat. There was no bark on the brisket, no peppercorn, no maple, no nothing. Food was less than mediocre. The BBQ was tasteless, as was the beans and collards. The mac & cheese tasted like Stouffer's filled with sodium and frankly disgusting. My 17yo son who eats anything couldn't take a second bite of the mac & cheese. Service was poor. Ordered 1 soda. Got two. Then charged for 2. Upon pointing this out to the server, she had no reply. Moved here from New Orleans over a year ago and I've been iffy about ordering bbq and/or seafood in MD due to the drastic differences of seasoning from what I'm accustomed too. I searched for local restaurants that served Gumbo and RH&B popped up. I was excited but didn't get my hopes up. Needless to say I've ordered their gumbo at least once every week or so. It's PERFECT. Between the sausage, shrimp, flavor of the rou and okra...I was in heaven! Their gumbo could not be any closer to down home New Orleans gumbo. The Mac and cheese is amazing. The restaurant was OK and it was sort of a hole in the wall but I live nearby and it was pretty nice and cozy inside. After we sat down to eat we were served pretty quickly and we had the ribs and barbecue sauce with coleslaw, although the coleslaw was sort of bland and the ribs were a little tougher than usual because I prefer them to fall off the bone. Other than that I would go back but not as frequently because it's not somewhere I would eat every day. read more
