We finally decided to check this place out yesterday. I thought their fresh cut fries were excellent. They were not over salted which tends to be an issue I have with lots of places. What can be said about Red Hot Ranch that already hasn't been said about fireworks, dinosaurs, sharks and Die Hard? It's awesome. I'm a devoted lover of the hot dog and once I found out I could get one at 4 AM on a Tuesday a mere few blocks from my apartment, let's just say my pants got a little tight. The dogs are awesome and anyone who is a fan of Red Hots by Comiskey already knows this. Growing up on the South Side, I know that Vienna Beef is where the money's located and I tip my cap to the Ranch for following in this proud Chicago tradition, But really, we go for the hot dogs and stay for the fresh cut fries. The fries are fucking dynamite, simply put. If they could pair those bad boys with some cheese, I would move a few blocks from my apartment just to be that much closer. Did the double hot and fries; $4.75 was a good price for this much food. Like the other Red Hot location on Ashland, the hot dogs here are only ok, not great. You come for the fresh cut fries...how fresh? Like, the guy dropped a potato into the shredded, then dropped the fries into a fryer for three minutes, then poured the happy goodness into my bag. I need to do the polish and the shrimp to round out this review, but if you go to this location, stick to the fries (at Ashland, you've got the burger option). The service was so obnoxiously bad that I almost let just left after I paid. A travesty of a place and the late night employees should be fired. The folks and critics at Thrillist and Time Out are quick to proclaim this mediocre hole-in-the-wall Logan Square's answer to Fatso's Last Stand. Like most establishments in Logan Square, this assessment is overrated, inaccurate, and probably written by a clueless hipster. I stopped in on a Friday night at 1 a.m. on my way home from a bar. At this time of night, Fatso's would be poppin' with rap music blasting, fryers and grills smellin' delicious, and a raucous, drunk crowd. I expected much of the same at Red Hot Ranch. Unfortunately, to my surprise, it was depressing and empty, just like the food I was about to regretfully consume. My companion and I split a dog and some shrimp. The hot dog was bland, to put it plainly. Nothing special at all. I could get a better hot dog at (insert generic suburban hot dog joint) any day of the week. The shrimp, like the fries, were relatively flavorless, most likely due to spending too much time in the fryer. Luckily, the teenagers working the counter were friendly; hence the second star. My first experience at RHR was pretty bad. We had to supplement the condiments when we got home, they were so stingy with them. That said, the shrimp taste that gets left in the oil gets on the fries and is strangely good. Very good. Or at least enough to move this from a three star rating to a four star. This is not a big place at all. Pretty old school hot dog stand on the inside to where it does feel like a real throwback. So, I needed to get some friggin encased meats because why else would I be here.The dog itself was pretty solid, but the polish was where it was at. The dog was on the smaller side and while the polish wasn't mammoth, it was bringing some serious quality. They cram a bunch of fries into both the dog and the polish. The fries are thick and damn good. It is a bit annoying taking the fries out so you can have them separately though Even with me saying, "why else would I go here", well, I found out why else I would go here: Fried Shrimp. They take the tails off, and the shrimp are killer. I decided on the hot sauce, which wasn't too hot. I went back to RHR after some urging that I didn't give it a chance the first time around or had an unusual experience, or something else. I still don't think these dogs are nearly as good as people would lead you to believe. I'm fine with a depression dog, but something just seems to be missing from this one, and it isn't as snappy or flavorful as others I enjoy, such as Gene's and Jude's. Overall, the dog just leaves me wanting more, the next course that will be truly delicious. That shouldn't happen with a hot dog. It's true that the fries are delicious, hand cut, and well fried. I like to see myself as spoiled to have friends that lived in Logan Square. I just counted and realized I've been visiting Chicago at least once a year for the past 4 years. Every single one of those trips, after a night of drinking and debauchery, I am a fan of stopping in at Red Hot Ranch and getting a polish dog with everything (including hot peppers...be warned though, they are HOT!) and fries. I am so much of a fan I specifically ask to to go here, get my food to go, then sit in my friends' living room, chow down and complain about how my mouth is on fire but that I cannot stop eating. The dog is perfect, Vienna beef with a snappy casing that works well with the bun and toppings. Fries come on top, which is an ok variation to the Chicago dog, albeit a new one for me and makes packaging easy. Cheap (aka the right price) for the dog and fries. Decent snap to the dog. Ok flavor. So after many drive-bys and glances at the Yelp reviews, my sister and I finally stopped in to try some of their highly touted fresh fried shrimp. What a delight! I expected the usual hot dog stand mini frozen shrimpies and was pleasantly surprised by the large, perfectly cooked, succulent shrimp and the cocktail dipping sauce. This place is a minute's walk from my place on Western, which for starters is a big plus. It is also open extremely late, like 5am on some days. Another plus. The fries here... are amazing. Freshly cut and fried up while you wait. The hot dogs are good too, but seriously, how can you screw up a hot dog (especially for me, as I get them plain so I can slather sriracha all over them at home)? So they have the basics covered. What I don't like is minor. Tiny menu (only dogs, polish and fried shrimp... I'd appreciate it if burgers were added to the menu as a nice alternative from the McDonalds down the street), cash only and not much of an eating area. Although the way the prices are set up so everything equals out to an even dollar amount is nice. The staff are extremely nice and personable as well, so I will frequent this place often. read more

I'm a self proclaimed french fry expert and Red Hot fries them well. Go big and get the cheddar fries. If you're coming on a warm summer day, the outdoor tables are great for dining. They're open late, they're cheap, and the food comes out pretty quickly - so those are all pluses. Is it the best late night food in Chicago? Far from. But - it's not bad, especially if you've had one too many shots of malört (which, as it turns out, is one shot of malört). Stopped to check out this greasy spoon place about a month ago because I heard they had a great burger for a great price. I was back again today for my second trip. What I heard was correct. Both times I ordered the rhr double cheese burger, it came with fries. It was a delicious burger for a great price. The beef had that fresh off the grill taste and the fixins were sure to please. They put a sauce on all their burgers that gives them a great flavor and a juicey gooey texture. So the burgers are great, the fries need some work, they are bland and just taste like oil. Also tried a side order or fried shrimp, these were also good. My business partner had hot dogs on our first trip and he said they were pretty meh. Sometimes simplicity is a great thing. Red Hot Ranch only has three items on its menu-- hot dogs, fries and shrimp. I was a biiiiit hungover when I stopped by, ready for some greasy, delicious food, and greasy delicious food is what I got. This place is a gem! Yes, it has a very bare bones menu, but that's because they focus on doing a very small number of things exceptionally well. Instead of wishing Red Hot Ranch had a larger menu, we should be wishing any of the hundreds of below-average "hot dog" places that litter this city, and offer everything from soggy pizza puffs to dry, hockey puck burgers, should take a play out of Red Hot Ranch's playbook and slim down their offerings in an attempt to raise the quality of their food beyond what they can unload from a Sysco truck. This place takes its time and does all the little things right when it comes to their food. The hot dogs are good quality, natural casing Vienna Beef, the buns are properly steamed, fresh condiments are applied carefully, and the fries are double-fried to order. Yes, these all sound like minor things, but with 9 out of 10 fast food joints using poor quality ingredients, not taking any pride in their work, and/or using frozen food-service fries, this attention to detail should be lauded, as it results in one of the best dogs and some of the best fries in all of Chicago! One BIG change at this place compared to the original location on Western (still open, by the way) is that they now have a griddle, and do burgers. But my friends, this is no ordinary burger. This place does a In-N-Out-style griddle burger, completed with special sauce. And I am happy to report it is one of the absolute best burgers available in Chicago, for less than $5.00 including fries! The thin patties are hand-formed and grilled to a nice medium, with a crust on the exterior, and have a very rich, beefy flavor. The whole sandwich is carefully assembled with cheese, a fresh piece of lettuce, a slice of tomato, and diced onions. And don't forget the special sauce. How can anyone not like this place? It is locally-owned small business, prices are kept low, and everything is done to a high standard with fresh ingredients. The french fried shrimp were a massive waste of money. There's like .9 lbs of breading and .1 lb of horrendously overcooked shrimp in the 1 lb serving. Never again.
