Super awesome great place for legit Chinese food. I lived in zhejiang province for about a year and this place brought back some memories. I could understand some not being impressed just as I would suspect many Kansans to not enjoy being in China but for me it was a pretty good experience. The staff was friendly and very prompt, but the place wasn't too busy. The dishes on the Chinese menu are, as in all restaurants in China, meant to be shared. I'm sure a greedy American belly could take in the whole thing but it will be $10 for one entre'. Take a group and enjoy each other's company at one of the many big round tables and share your food, thoughts and smiles. The combos are a great deal if your alone. Soup appetizer, and entre for about $7 is a great deal even available at dinner time. I think this place will be frequented often by exchange students and foodies into authentic Chinese. If your into spicy sechuan this is a must go and if not you should try the many not that spicy dishes they have. I plan on making this my new go to for anything Asian. 4.5 stars. One of the best Chinese places in the city. Highly recommended. Everything I have had here is good. I personally recommend the hot pot potato and Egg and tomato (other things I have had that are tasty, just not my top picks: dan dan noodles, string beans, lotus root, spicy fish fillet). If you want Americanized, "beige" Chinese food, with a stuff-yourself-to-death buffet, avoid this place like the plague. No buffet, no beige menu options. If you want a taste treat that you will talk about for a day or two, or a week or two, check it out. I like my Chinese food spicy (Hunan, Szechuan) and complex. I like fresh flavors, and I want a dish in front of me to have taste appeal, smell appeal, and sight appeal. Red Pepper claims to offer "authentic Sichuan cuisine." Red Pepper delivers. The menu is varied, with both familiar favorites--Kung-Pao Chicken--and selections I imagine only a Chinese ex-pat would order--like Tofu and Pork Intestines Stir-Fried. The menu was bilingual and when we ate Sunday lunch, a number of our fellow patrons spoke Chinese. I'm sorry if that observation strikes you as politically-incorrect, but I saw that as a good sign. If you have both folks from the home country eating there, and the wait staff are still interested in making sure your Yankee palate knows what it's getting into, that's a good sign. My wife ordered the Sichuan version of Kung Pao Chicken (they offer two versions, the other the typical Americanized one) and I picked the Chong Qing Spicy Chicken. We are both thrill-seekers in the pepper department, so we told the waiter to bring it on. But what we got in both our dishes was not a ham-fisted heat-fest, but rather an engaging blend of gently stir fried chilies and nicely balanced spices. My bride's Kung Pao had some thinly sliced ginger livening things up (not the typical rain of peanuts stifling the red peppers) and I had freshly ground coriander seed and maybe a bit of cardamom in the Chong Qing. Was there actually cardamom in there? No idea, but when was the last time I ate at a Chinese restaurant and my wife and I were tasting something and debating whether a certain coarse-ground spice was present? Yes, this is Chinese food you will actually talk about while you're eating it. The fried rice, egg rolls, and hot and sour soup were all quite good, but the real action was with the entrees. They looked, smelled, and tasted like there was a cook out back preparing our food with pride. The service was friendly but not sickly sweet. Our waiter wanted to get a sense of how spicy we wanted our dishes, and did so with subtlety and precision. In other words, he and the chef got it just right. Red Pepper was a professional, classy, and yet down to earth restaurant. I took a menu home with me. General Tso's Chicken is not on there. But if you try the Chong Qing Spicy Chicken, your world will get rocked, at least slightly. And it won't cost you any more than that beige place. read more

I really like the selection and the Chinese menu here. I mainly go here for the hot pot which is very large and should be shared by at least two people. We usually share it with for. The hot pot is a great experience, and all of the ingredients cook while at your table. They offer a lot of different traditional Chinese food items. With a lot of their dishes they give you the option of having chicken with or without the bone in which is nice for the kids. You can also get most dishes very spicy if you like. read more

This is the most authentic Chinese food you can get in the lawrence area, maybe even including Kansas City. Brings me back to my trips to Si Chuan. Highly recommend the Kou-Shui chicken, it's inexpensive and packed with flavor with enough to fill you up. read more

The food here has been very good to excellent (for Kansas northern Chinese food), but last week they got a new chef and the quality and safety have fallen. The food was too spicy -- the fish with pepper was quite a lot spicier than in the past. So much so that it no longer tasted very good. One of my co-workers became very sick in the stomach several hours after the meal. Neither me nor any of my friends will be returning unless we hear the old chef is brought back. read more

The food was very good. We appreciated the wide choices and ordered from both the traditional menus and the American Chinese menu. The twice cooked pork and stir fried green beans were nicely seasoned and mildly spicy. The combination fried rice was also tasty. The only area that could improve is the service which seemed somewhat indifferent. When we arrived they left us to stand there wondering whether to seat ourselves. Perhaps it was an off night but had to ask several times for water and the crab Rangoon that were part of the Yelp checkin. They finally arrived when we were halfway finished with the meal. We ordered Fish in Chili Sauce and Bok Choy and Mushrooms, both from the traditional Chinese menu. The food was excellent! We really enjoyed it and we are looking forward to trying some more dishes from their traditional Chinese menu. The restaurant was clean, but a bit noisy once some of the tables filled up. It has kind of an open-concept with an industrial ceiling, and there just isn't really anything to absorb the noise. Overall, we had a great experience! 5/5 for the food. read more

Great place if you like to try new things. This place is kind of a gamble since most of the menu is not your typical Chinese. But everything I have tried was great! Don't worry, they also do the standards well. Would be nice to have pictures of the food, the staff are eager to please but difficult to communicate with. Had never been here and wanted some lunch. Service wasn't great; took a while to be greeted, sat with an empty drink toward the end of my meal. However, the lunch specials were VERY affordable. I had General Tso's chicken, brown rice and crab Rangoon for just under $6. The food was about what you'd expect, which is to say, perfectly tasty but not elite. The food is typical and bland. I placed an order at 7:31 pm tonight and at 8:31pm I called them to find out when my order would be delivered. She said that he was on his way and it would be soon. 30 more minutes and I call back and she said the exact same thing. 1.5 hrs is NOT okay in a city as small as this. That's insane. I ordered delivery of the sesame chicken, crab rangoon and spring rolls. The springs rolls were great! The sesame chicken was good not a lot of sauce but that could be due to it being delivery. All the sauce settled at the bottom and more dark pieces of chicken than light. Delivery was fast and the food was hot. read more

Don't order on-line. Food is horrible. Smells bad. The worst Chinese food I ever had. We dined there previously and ordered authentic Chinese dishes. It was very delicious. This time, we ordered 4 dishes at 5pm thru Grubhub website and all dishes seem to be leftover from their lunch buffet. Shrimps in a dish are almost dried, turned dark-yellowish. We throw away most food. Their dine-in menus are authentic Chinese, but online menus are Americanized Chinese food. The cook doesn't know how to cook Americanized Chinese. Worse, they are not fresh at all. The difference in quality between dine-in there and online order is unbelievable. To complain and to ask whether the food was prepared freshly, we called. At the 1st call, the lady hung up when we started to complain. At the 2nd call, she said food might look old because we picked up the food late. We ordered at 4:55 and picked up 5:20. read more

Do not order from here!! I made an order for delivery, after 35 minutes I called to check on the status, as the restaurant is less than a mile away and no mention was made of it being busy. I was told that it was on the way but then the guy said he wasn't sure if it had been cooked and was really on way cause t was so so busy- yet he assured me 15 minutes later max I would get food. Another 35 minutes later I called back and again was told it was on the way. Yet this woman, the woman I had ordered with and who the guy who answered the phone, again, passed me to after informing me that she was owner at this point said that the driver had left. yet she was totally unable to estimate when he would arrive or how many orders he had also left the restaurant with. She then became hysterical and suggested we cancel it - to which I responded that I would wait if the guy really had left. She was totally irate and no discount was offered. Since we are in the neighborhood, we decided to try out this newer place. What a surprise to find authentic Chinese cuisine. (There is an American-Chinese menu, too - which is the one on the website. I can't speak to that one.) We were warned the portions were big, but ordered three things anyway. The cold rabbit with peanuts 'snack' was wonderful and spicy - we took half of it home. The spicy spare ribs were also terrific, with onion, red and bell peppers in addition to the hot red peppers in a fragrant sauce - one third of that dish is in our fridge for tomorrow. The saute'd lotus root was fresh and generously laced with garlic - sublime. .Only a third of that dish was left. Steamed rice was provided, of course. All in all, we won't have to eat again 'til noon tomorrow, and the memory of our meal will bring good dreams tonight. I can't wait to go back, and want to take more friends so we can try more of the menu. We now know that one dish is good for two people, and with two dishes there will be a take-home container in your future. Not a bad thing. If my next visit is as good as this one, I'll check in and give it another star. read more
