It pains me to leave this review because normally Reds is much better. Tonight was not good. First, they told us 15-20 min wait. It took about 45 min to get a table even tho the restaurants was half empty. The meal took over 2 hours, mostly waiting for the waitress. She didn't come back to take our dinner order until well after the appetizers were gone. Didn't come back to refresh drinks, one meal came out without sour cream and salsa while a duplicate meal had it, food was barely warm and it sounded like the ceiling was going to fall on us because of whatever was happening on the second floor. I don't know what happened but they really need to step it up to get back to normal standards. Really disappointed tonight. read more

This was our second time trying Reds. The first time was many years ago when they were still in Rockford. The first time we went was to celebrate my birthday. They offered Kobe beef, but I was told they had run out. I tried to order 2 other items, only to be told they were out of those also, so I ended up with a chicken meal. Now this wasn't like it was almost closing time, it was the time we always eat, between 5:30 and 6:00 pm! I was told I'd get a free desert to make up for it. After I decided on which desert sounded good to me, the waiter came back out and said they were out of that too, so he said would take my whole dinner off the bill. He didn't. He even charged us for my desert! So, fast forward to today... We were given a gift card for Reds at Thousand Oaks, so we went for my birthday again. I ordered their signature steak, a New York strip with a special sauce served with risotto and asparagus. Now one would think their signature steak would be their best quality steak. Nope! That steak had white stringy membranes running thru it to the point that there were areas that I couldn't even cut with the steak knife, and there was tough grizzle along one side. The risotto was room temperature, tough and chewy. The asparagus was basically raw. Granted I don't like my vegetables cooked to a mush, but I do like it cooked. Of course the waitress came by to check before I even had a chance to cut into the steak, and then we never saw her again for the rest of the meal. When she finally appeared she asked if I needed a box, and when I explained why I did not, she offered to take my meal off the bill. She did. For desert I ordered the no flours espresso chocolate cake, which was good, and coffee to go with it, which was excellent. Oh yes, to be fair, we had the roasted brussel sprouts for an appetizer and they were very good. My fiancé made reservations on May 9th for my birthday dinner when we arrived the staff immediately seated us, our server was very attentive to us every step of the way, we ordered appetizers which they nailed! I ordered their porter house and she ordered their New York Strip they once again nailed it, you can really tell the chefs take pride in what they do, after dinner was finished they even brought me birthday desert on the house and discounted our total for coming on my birthday. Hats off to the server staff and chefs you made my night. Recommend every one to try, but dress up otherwise you'll feel out of place. read more

Red's is located in a beautiful building, next to the river, near the dam and in a picturesque small town. What could go wrong? We found the food to be very good however service was spotty. Appeared to be related to delays in the kitchen. The waitstaff and manager did their best to handle the issues however this is an upscale eatery and they are not bashful with their menu prices. I'd go back if I was in the Rockford area for dinner however in Grand Rapids there are better alternatives. read more

Very disappointed in the food. We arrived with friends and a reservation at 6:30 . Drinks were great server was awesome . The appetizers of meatballs , calamari and tuna were promising but the entrees were not up to speed . First of all they ran out of prime rib and hour in to dinner service .... not well planned , and the ribeye on the 500 degree plate ordered medium rare came out well done . It was not a 16oz piece of meat as advertised . A ribeye should be well marbled , thick cut especially on those hot plates and tender . This was more like a diner cut of meat served with eggs on a breakfast special than a high end cut for a steak house . Mashed potatoes were served in a brick the size of a tennis ball but they were not creamy or flavorful. The asparagus was sparse . Truly a disappointment from what I would expect from a ribeye. Also the whiskey should be arranged on menu in ascending order , differentiating from bargain to top shelf . They are listed in a mishmash and eyes appear on bourbon list . A group of church friends and I went here one night during the week (I want to say it was a Tuesday) and we were the only table in the place :( Kind of sad, but it was also just as everything was starting to open back up. We haven't been to Reds since they relocated to Thousand Oaks. Tonight we went there for a family celebration. My dad was visiting and asked to take the family to a nice restaurant. We decided on Reds. Huge mistake. Steaks were a 5 out of 10 (true mediocrity), the service was a 3 (I always being cash and increase the tip - tonight was the first time in 20 years, I actually thought the server deserved 10% - if that - and I have worked in restaurants. I don't think they had a manager on site. My advice is: don't say that your opened until 8 and then wait until 8:01 to tell guests the kitchen is closed - no dessert. Service is spotty, food above average. I agree with earlier post that they have in place a preferred reservation system for members vs walk ins. It is NOT first come first served for smaller parties as we found last night. Plenty of open tables and we were first directed to a table basically hidden in darkness as they had not replaced a light bulb. Asked to be moved to another table, specifically a booth, and was told it was reserved for members. As the restaurant is a favorite of my 82 year old mother in law who lives nearby, we may go again, but not at the top of my list. read more

I have a bone to pick. Unfortunately it's not the bone from my coveted Cherry Glazed duck breast and thigh served scored, seared and rare alongside a beautifully prepared broccoli rabe and blue cheese bread pudding.... because that was taken from the menu. I have traveled 46 of the 50 states and have eaten in a vast number of fantastic restaurants. I however, on each birthday I return to Red's On The River to sit on the patio overlooking the... you guessed it.... river. To enjoy this truly fabulous meal with a bottle of recommended red wine. In 2015 however, I returned to Red's to find it had been removed from the menu. I asked our waitress hoping there was a mistake, however she had confirmed that the menu had changed. I sadly ordered something else that was indeed an excellent tasting meal, however I cannot remember what it was. The Cherry Glazed duck breast and thigh served scored, seared and rare alongside a beautifully prepared broccoli rabe and blue cheese bread pudding was one of the Top 10 best meals I've ever eaten... it was that good. We went for dinner on a Monday night. It was cold outside, but warm and cozy inside! The waitstaff was knowledgeable and friendly, and the view of the river was very nice. Hadn't been here for a long time, and the remodel is sleek and trim. Love the golf club light fixture at the reservation desk! The menu is small, and definitely oriented toward steak, and more steak. That said, they do it well. I especially liked the fried goat cheese herb ball on top of my husband's steak - so good. The risotto was tasty but very greasy, and the surf portion of the surf & turf should have been much larger to rate the title. On the good side, if you call ahead, they will prepare a dessert for your special occasion - in our case a script greeting in chocolate with a mini creme brulee to share. That was a delight. Wish the menu had more variety, but the food was good, service was stellar, and attention to detail is above and beyond. read more

We went here for a Special Father's Day dinner. It was everything but special. Wait staff was horrible.Being this was a special day you would have thought they would have had adequate staffing. They never brought items we requested, never check back after dropping off our food. Food..lets get to that. Very overpriced for what you are served. It was nothing special. I have been going to Red's for many years, and am more than a little disappointed at my most recent visit. I was warned by a few friends that this place may be slipping in quality and service as compared to the last few years and I have to agree. First, the parking is inadequate and unprotected. Be prepared to watch a carload or two of non-diners take the last spot and leave while you have to park elsewhere and walk back. There was no valet during our recent visits although I have seen valet in the past. Second, the quality of the wait staff has declined. We were sat in a table by the window completely un-shielded by the sun. When we brought it up, we were informed that the awning had collapsed during the harsh winter and had not been replaced. We were not given the option to relocate. We were then more or less neglected by our harried waitress while we involuntarily did an impression of "lizard baking on a desert rock." After a while, we noted a few tables (of patrons that were seated after us) getting bread and butter while we had none. We then asked for some as our waitress had not been back. We were told "The kitchen is out. Sorry." Puzzled, I watched as the tables around us ate what looked exactly like the bread and butter they were supposedly out of... Third, the food quality/portion size seemed diminished while the price went up. We ordered the Pork Cheek Ravioli. $11 gets you... 3 small ravioli on a big plate. The beet salad was the best part of my dinner; very tasty but $7 for a small half-salad. My entree was the Arctic Char. A bit overdone, and not that great for $30. By the end of the meal, we were so uncomfortable after basking in the sun, we skipped dessert. I guess I can't blame the restaurant for weather damage, but they do make these things called shades. I guess I wouldn't have minded had my food and service been as good as it was in the 2006 - 2012 era. In any case, it was a bit unsettling to see a place that would have previously gotten 4 or 5 stars to have fallen to this degree. I really want to give it one more try to see if this was a fluke or an indication of a sad spiral. read more

Located approximately 10 ~ 15 minutes north of Grand Rapids in Rockford, Michigan, Reds...which sits astride the banks of the picturesque Rogue River is quickly becoming a much loved dining hot spot. Recently, on a whim, we decided to head 'up north.' The restaurant is located in the quaint, historic Rockford Village downtown area. It's a huge building with a Tuscany inspired architecture. Walking up to the door, I marveled at how large the place seemed to be. Well, that's because there's more to this restaurant than the main dining room. Included in the complex are a very well stocked wine shop, banquet and catering facilities, business offices in the upstairs area and a patio dining area which runs the entire length of the building; providing an unrivaled view of the riverfront. We choose outdoor seating as it was a beautiful summer evening. The service was superb. From the moment we stepped into the restaurant, the wait staff were attentive, prompt and well informed about the menu. Now let's talk food...The menu presents an interesting and somewhat eclectic mix of options. Reds on the River prides itself on it's extensive array of wines...particularly the red wines, and the steak and seafood selections. According to their site, the seafood is flown in fresh daily. Our waiter informed us about the fact that their steaks are aged on site for approximately 3 weeks. In addition, the restaurant works with local farms to provide fresh produce of a seasonal variety. The bread which was also from a local Grand Rapids, Michigan bakery was deliciously warm, moist and hearty. I, in particular , appreciate a restaurant which cooperates with local farms to benefit it's patrons and our community. For starters, we ordered the chicken empanadas which were served on a bed of lettuce greens trickled over with a seasoned mayonnaise. An inventive touch to the empanadas was the addition of raisins...a nice complement to the savory blend of spices in the filling. My husband had a crock of French Onion Soup. I decided to try the Torch Lake Chicken for my main entree and my husband opted for a Cuban inspired dish, the Ropa Veija. I wondered if the pristine, upper mid-Michigan lake was the inspiration. The cherry glaze was the hint. The chicken was succulent and the cherry glaze was not overly sweet. A bed of whipped Yukon potatoes served as a robust base atop which curly crisp onion rings added a whimsical touch. Saving room for dessert is highly recommended as the sweets selections are prepared on site. There were many options, but I decided on the Tres Leches Cake one of my favorites. Reds on the Rivers' twist on Tres Leches included a fruit compote (in red syrup of course) and a raspberry sorbet. As the sun began to work it's way down and the evening cooled, the Meijer White Pine Trail allowed walkers, joggers and cyclists to enjoy the view too. I had my favorite Ahi Tuna Steak Dinner along with the French Onion Soup and this restaurant did not let me down. The dining room had an excellent ambiance and the server(s) checked on us routinely. I wanted to update this review and continue to give it 4 stars since my last review. Very overpriced for very lackluster food. I've been there about three times, and have been consistently underwhelmed. The ambience is very nice, but that is about it. If you can't eat outside, don't eat there. They focus all their energy on their pretentious shtick (i.e., waitstaff gives you a business card). and focus no energy on their food. After discussing with my wife how disappointed we were (yet again) with the food, we overheard a patron at an adjacent table complaining that the food had no taste. The waitress responded: "have you tried salt and pepper"? For a thirty dollar piece of fish, should you really anticipate that the flavor you are going for is salt and black pepper? Like I said, I've been there three times, and I'm done. I can't justify spending this amount of money on this mediocre (at best) food. read more

Came here today with my wife for an afternoon date. Unfortunately we were unable to sit in the main dining room due to a renovation. We were led upstairs where we found a spot overlooking the golf course. I ordered the bowl of French onion soup and my wife had the prosciutto wrapped scallops for appetizers. The soup is delicious and not too salty. The scallops were $11.95 and were good but there was only two and they were not large (about the circumference of a quarter). At this price point we thought there should have been more than two. My wife ordered the pecan cherry salad with added salmon for $4.00. She really enjoyed the salmon and found it was a much better price to value than the scallops. I ordered the Ruben which comes with your choice of side, I had the onion rings. While the sandwich looked good I found it dry and really not that good. Overall the lunch was pleasing not because of the food but because I was with my wife. I will try the Acorn Grille at Thousand Oaks again but it will be a while. read more

I went to red's on the river back when it first opened and thought it was a lovely location but now- not so much. The 3 hostesses didn't greet us at all- just looked at us while chatting but the door lady did greet us. The food was okay, tasted lovely, however not checked over, 2 of the plates looked like they missed their plate check, with steak pieces all over. But the steak presentation was okay- now when the desert came the girl made a mess! Chocolate mousse all over the plates, and the forks and she smudged my white dress- it seemed as though she quickly put the plates down and dissapeared as though she would have gotten in trouble. Must say- service just doesn't work when the restaurant's important FOH staff are mostly High Schoolers. Needless to say- no really worth the price. read more

If you're in Rockford, and you want to enjoy a more upscale experience in this little Norman Rockwell-eque town, then Reds-on-the-River is for you. Lunch is good for business, and if it's warm, you can eat outside and have a leisurely afternoon overlooking the Rogue River. Good salads - try the pear/stilton, and good sandwich/soup combos - try the Lobster roll. Probably more pricey than the areas restaurants, but why not make a day of it in Rockford - go shopping at the Footwear Depoe, the little boutiques, and enjoy the town. There is also a nice walking trail along the river that would be a good way to burn off a big meal. Only 15 minutes north of Grand Rapids, it's a cute little getaway. read more

We didn't know what to expect and brought two of our college junior boys. Menu was very large, excellent appetizers, read meat,fish, chicken. Everything was excellent. Greeting, seating, menu, service, speed of food, quality of food was tremendous. The menu I a bit pricey upon first glance but the quality and service warrant the pricing. The moment we walked in the door we were greeted by super friendly people, our waitress was PHENOMENAL, her name was Lindsey, and as we walked out we were re-greeted with smiles. GREAT STAFF! We had an exceptionally nice meal of steaks and seafood along with really well made cocktails and a good wine list. Nine (9) of us went to Reds on a Sunday at 11:30 AM to celebrate a birthday. We ordered about 11:45AM and didn't receive our meals until almost 1PM. The table next to us had 12 people, were seated just after us, and had almost finished dining when our meals arrived. Our waitress was in tears apologizing, because of the delay. Most of the food was cold and one order was wrong. We knew there were staff shortages but never received an explanation. We did receive a discount on our bill, which was thoughtful, but we'd have preferred much better service. Most of us won't risk dining there again. read more

I had a Groupon for Red's and my husband and I just had a very nice dinner. The Goat Cheese app was average but the Torch Lake Chicken entree I had was really good. The chicken was hot and juicy with a ton of blue cheese crumbles, sitting on a bed of tasty mashed potatoes. My husband got the Brisket sandwich, since they were sold out of the steak burger, and it was good too. We also got the dessert sampler with creme brulee, chocolate mousse cake and apple spice cake. All very good. The service was good. Our server was very knowledgeable and helpful and our waters were filled by multiply people all night long. We'll have to come back when the weather is nice to sit on the deck and enjoy the view. read more

A very pleasant and delicious experience for my first time at Reds! We were there with an average sized group (8 adults) for an evening dinner reservation. Service was prompt and incredibly attentive. Food was delicious from start (empanadas and a meat platter) to finish (desserts all around!). Everyone's entrees were well-prepared, fresh, and flavorful. The pear and Stilton salad is remarkable. Dinners (which were jambalaya, London broil, whitefish (2), Torch Lake chicken, a Reuben, the NY strip, and a salmon special) were thoroughly enjoyed and finished without any leftovers. We will be back, even if just for special occasions now and then. read more

The view is great and we saw a mix of upper crusts, boomers and yuppies in there, all having a good time. Most memorably, I tried the creme brulee trio. I did not like the lavender one, but that is my taste, not speaking to the skill that created it. Will definitely be back, this time when the weather is warmer so we can sit outside. read more

This was perhaps one of the more disappointing meals that I have had in Grand Rapids. When this restaurant was in Rockford, we used to drive from Grand Haven to eat there on a regular basis because the food and service were so very good. After it moved to Thousand Oaks, we have been there twice. This was the second time. The service was friendly, but a little slow. They were several times that we were waiting for server so that we could get something. Also, you got to keep an ion your silverware. A few times when someone wound up without a fork, no one noticed and brought a new one. When you change courses, it is standard practice at a fine dining restaurant to double check that everyone has the proper silverware for the next course. That was never done. Three of us had dry Ketel One martinis to start. They came out the opposite, with a significant amount of vermouth. They were pretty undrinkable. We sent them back and the next round were made properly. That was kind of an odd error for a restaurant of this supposed caliber to make. The calamari appetizer was good, not overly breaded and not overcooked. The nachos were about what I would make it home... Except that I would actually season the ground beef and maybe sauté the jalapeños so that the flavor is a little richer (a lack of basic salt and pepper seasoning was a consistent throughout the meal). I had the half wedge salad, which did not have nearly enough dressing and was pretty devoid of blue cheese crumbles. For an entrée, I had the filet mignon. It was cooked to temperature properly, but had never been seared off on a grill or in a pan. So without the sear, it didn't have that great flavor do you look for in steak. It looked like it had oddly enough been cooked in an oven or something. I didn't send it back because the other steak at the table also had no sear on it, so it was a question of technique. The asparagus was either boiled or steamed but had no salt or pepper on it. The french fries were clearly frozen and, contrary to the rest of the food, massively oversalted. My father-in-law had the salmon. The server said that they normally prepare it medium well--which is way over for a piece of salmon. He asked for it to be medium rare, with an underline on rare. It came out well done. He sent it back and the second time it was cooked properly. There are many restaurants in the price point of this one in Grand Rapids that can prepare some pretty amazing food. We went here tonight because they had wider seafood options than many other local restaurants. The meal, however, pretty underwhelming and we not be back. read more
