I have spent hundreds of dollars here buying the best most high tech locks that they offer I am loyal customer but those locks got stolen. Now in my time of need. This is my second go at having people breaking into my house. Heck yesterday my soda was suddenly flat I drank t anyways, and two hours bleed profusely and believe that I got poisoned and had my overies burst. We have a 99 year old home. Original hardware. I fancy myself as being able to fix most anything. Our entryway door was in need of polishing the brass up so , very foolishly I attempted to take the hardware off. I succeeded in dropping two of the screws inside the mechanism rendering the door inoperable. I called another locksmith and they recommended Reed Brothers. because they were unable to work on our old door. I called Reed Brothers and got an immediate response. They asked me to send photos so they knew what they were dealing with. I sent the pictures and received a quick response from Mike who said they would have someone out between 1 and 3 pm. Tai showed up a little early and quickly determined how to fix it. He was very pleasant, knew what he was doing and fixed it very quickly. If I could give ten stars I would. These guys are great. They took the remote keyfob blank I got on Amazon for a Subaru Outback, and did the laser cut and programming for $25 and $55 respectively. I must have called over 10 dealers and locksmiths before I found them, none would take a 3rd party key, and all wanted about double what I ended up paying. They also rekeyed a deadbolt and another lock to the same key for $15. Service was awesome, the guys I was working with really knew their stuff and were friendly. read more

Went there after reading all the reviews on yelp. Highly disappointed with them. I took a quote online for programming my remote-less fob key for my car. I was given a very good quote , that made me travel all the way from San Mateo to Oakland around 31 miles each way not to forget 3 gallons of gas plus the toll for bay bridge $5 and most important my time. I was confirmed on email by the owner randy that they did the programming of key for my car make. I also called twice before going last week and this week with my car details and they said yes they will do the job. When I reached today all that the employee at the store could say was I am sorry and we apologize for the inconvenience. He was not even sorry and was kind of blaming on me. To call and ask for him. How on earth would I know who to talk to when I called the store. Overall not a nice experience . Very disappointed today. Would request the owner to check before confirming on email and the employees to recheck even after calling and giving the details. read more

Kathy is rude and disrespectful. I would never use this service again, and I recommend avoiding them if possible. I am a sub-tenant so I have no option to switch. I had a service repaired and expected it to be a 1-2 hour job. It ended up costing me over $1000. I asked for a reduction. One technician was skilled and experienced. For the other it was clearly his first day of training. They also had to move both of their vehicles on a busy construction street multiple times, which would have been avoided had they called me as they said they would, and then could have parked off-street. When I brought up these facts to Kathy she was immediately defensive and rude, saying, "Well, were the technicians on the job site all the hours stated?" and, "Didn't you agree to our rates?" Yes those are somewhat true but they miss the point. She said, "It only takes a minute to move a car." But not when every space is taken with construction equipment and crews. She said I wasn't even their client, since I'm the subtenant. Great, then I'd like my money back. I remained composed even though Kathy was being highly unprofessional. She said she would discuss this with the owner and get back to me but I very much doubted she provide a fair representation of the facts. And she never did get back to me. Avoid this company if you don't like to be overcharged or spoken to as if your business doesn't matter. read more

The great reviews are for ac reason. I was referred to Reed Brothers by USPS because USPS said our cluster box needed to be changed to a new kind since we wanted new master locks (too many mailbox thefts happening). Melrose came over to take a look, and I was pleasantly surprised at what he said- that there really was no need for installing a totally new cluster box (would cost $4K+) and whoever at USPS said the newer kind of locks couldn't be installed on our current cluster box didn't know their job. He offered for Reed Brothers to get this job done through USPS through some contacts they have of their own and that way it would be much faster, and for that they would charge their hourly service for making those phone calls, which would be at a fraction of the cost for replacement. Melrose went above and beyond to tell me so much more info on what the kind of locks we had and what we needed to change them to, how the master lock at the community gate kiosk also should be changed since that is also the thief might be having access to, to get inside our gated community etc. He could have just kept mum and suggested the much higher priced project just the way USPS had, but he did the right thing even though it meant a lower priced business for them. We are yet to use their service, but I still wanted to write this review since they totally deserve it! read more

I came to this place Because I needed to make some keys when I came into the counter One of the employees told me even though it was my turn he said You have to wait until I finish up with all the people that they were behind me .I don't think it's fair I am a client. And then I explain all the things that I needed And I ask him how long it will take for this to be done and then he told me like 10 minutes . Next thing you know the "manager" approach me and he said it's gonna take an hour. Really I don't get it. I don't think the way that the manager approach me it was professional. And then I asked him I need to talk to the manager and he said I am the manager with sarcastic voice. Like there's nothing I can do then wait one hour. my schedule is very tight and I'm trying to deliver good service to my clients. Based on Trav M's review, I called Reed Brothers to let me into my apartment today, having locked the keys inside. Trav got quite the deal. Since May, 2013, the price for that service went up to $125 and I got charged the full price even though the young locksmith took only 5 minutes to open the lock. This worked differently from what I was led to believe on the phone. The $125 was the estimate in case I had a difficult case, e.g. security deadbolt, broken lock, etc. I didn't. Very disappointed about the price and how someone got much better value for their money than I did apparently. Weird thing is the technician, Michael, wrote "air bag access" on the invoice. We've got a security system that is malfunctioning and needs servicing so I decided to call this place based on the good Yelp ratings and reviews. So, I get someone on the phone and start to tell him about my situation, saying that we need someone to come out to Fremont to help us out. The person on the phone says that they have emergency services and asks if it is an emergency. I say that it's not an emergency situation but that we'd like to schedule an appointment. Strangely enough, the person on the phone then states that since it's not an emergency, I should call back on Wednesday (4 days later)! Now I understand that it is Labor Day weekend this weekend, but still Labor Day is on Monday. Why call back on Wednesday? And why not take the time to schedule an appointment while you have me on the phone, even if you can't come out till next week? I read all these great review saying how they are patient, knowledgeable, and helpful, but the service I got while on the phone was anything but that. Bottom line is that I thought it was borderline rude the way the person kind of ended our conversation, hence the 2 stars. I will not be calling this place back since they don't seem to want my business. read more

I wanted to like you.. I really did, but in the end your services are very overpriced. I had some estimates given for security work and they were several hundred more then other places. They wanted to charge $150 to reprogram my alarm system to use their monitoring service and they required a on site setup, when other companies are willing to do it for free from their office. read more

I called to have several keys re-keyed, and although the initial call into their offices was more than a bit disconcerting, they did eventually get back to me to schedule someone to come out and do the work. He was quick, professional and helpful. Their follow-up since however hasn't been the greatest. I wanted to talk to them about security systems, left a voicemail and through their tech asked him to schedule a follow-up. I've had it with this place. I tried at first to purchase a railing for my front porch, which they charged me for and after three weeks and sending someone out, they decided they couldn't do it. Did get the deposit back. Went today to get keys made, a very simple process that should take a few minutes. After 25 minutes, the man who waited on me returned andI was about to pay him and he said he hadn't started yet. I asked him why he didnt say that in the first place?No answer. Asked him if he owned the store, pointed to his boss, who said he was using the one key machine. I asked him why they would not tell someone that it would take a half hour. Again no answer. After reading the owners response to my original review I laughed. The tagline for their company should be "Reed Brothers Security... If your calling us, you must be up to no good!" with an asterisk stating "Prices for being up to no good are higher then our normal prices" Since I stated more then once over the phone that I was the owner of the house and I was the one doing the evicting. I didn't think they'd still be confused about that but let that be a lesson to all you Yelpers. Expect to be guilty of something when you call Reed Brothers and enjoy the interrogation and rising prices over the phone. Who's got two thumbs and lost their apartment keys in a drunken stupor yesterday? This guy! Luckily, Reed Brothers was able to help me out. After shaking off my hangover, I called them to get an estimate for how much the services would be for "breaking in" to my apartment. I was told $88/hr, and that the next guy wouldn't be able to come out for another 1.5 to 2 hours. I went ahead and put myself in queue because at this point, I really needed a shower and I was starting to sweat out last night's beer and whisky. While I waited, I started calling around to other places and was getting some RIDICULOUS rates. One guy was asking for $195 for the whole job. I'll pass. Maybe 55 minutes after I called Reed Brothers, Matt called and said he was at my door. NICE! Being early is never out of style. I figured it would take him about and hour and a half to do the job since he had four locks to pick, so I was ready to shell out about $130. He was done in 10 minutes. Way to turn a stressful situation into a walk in the park! After the whole ordeal he even offered to make a copy of my spare key (which was locked in my apartment, ironically) for free. The first locksmith that I successfully contacted arrived within 15 minutes, took one look at the lock, and said it was too complex for him to open. He was able to unlock my apartment in less than a minute and the cost of the service was $170. We experienced our second forced entry in the five months since we purchased our home. At this point, the alarm monitoring system simply wasn't enough. Based on the reviews by other consumers, I contacted Reed Brothers Security for a quote on burglar bars and security doors. A Reed Brothers representative with over 10 years of experience came by my home the next morning. After reviewing our needs and surveying the perimeter of our home, we were provided with a quote and additional recommendations for improvements to our existing security measures based on the method of entry in both forced entries. We selected Reed Brothers Security for the job and could not be more pleased. Although I'm not a fan of burglar bars, the bars look beautiful against the black trim of our home and allow us to keep the windows open for longer periods of time. Also, the security doors now allow us to air out the house on warm days by keeping the front and back doors open without worrying about someone wandering into our home. We're very happy with the work performed and recommend Reed Brothers Security if you have security needs at your home. read more

Cut keys wrong had to go back twice. Used wrong cc would not transfer balance to different card. Also very expensive, better to use small company or buy online for half price. Update 7/30/14: This is not a bogus comment, I am a real person who lives in Oakland. I needed 3 copies of Medico keys, I had to drive back because first time keys didn't work, no big deal. Knowledgeable staff and though prices may be a little higher than larger retailers, I would rather support smaller / local businesses who have been around for years. Also, I had a problem with an electric keyless entry door lock system and after 2 years, and after the warranty expired, they were kind enough to REPLACE it -- actually REFUND THE TOTAL AMOUNT paid from 2 years ago, and also gave me several options to replace it at a discounted cost. I came in to get a house key duplicated and the lady in front of me was returning a key that didn't work. No biggie, even though she was flustered about it. I go ahead and get my house key duplicated and guess what? One copy that they made also did not work. I went here to have a single key made. I had to waiting about 15 minutes as they didn't seem to have to many employees working in the old funky place. Place was old and junkie looking inside and out. Old faded signs inside the business. Dark and dreary inside. Uug. Hard to get around all the really old huge safes. A couple of really old clunky chairs for sitting. I went in recently and was able to order vintage car keys, but get this, they will also scribe vintage keys to your specification if you want to pay for the labor. The also know their keys for new and older cars. One key they will be able to create from scratch by only having a vintage 45 year old lock, and no key. I didn't buy any, but there is a huge assortment of locks, security systems, and similar gear. I really liked the variety of security item should you need something special. You will not be able to find a place to out do Reed Brothers. read more

Got a special car key that you need copied? Reed Brothers is the place to go! They do a great job with all sorts of keys and provide excellent service. There has been a line each time I have been in there, but they move pretty quickly, provide excellent focused 1-on-1 service and I have never had to bring back a key. They all work right the first time. They've got parking off-street next to Rent-a-Relic, and there is usually some parking right on Telegraph.
