The drinks are a little weak for my taste. The food is great I had a chicken burrito it was spicy. I don't like spicy, and I forgot to ask the waiter if it had any hot sauce on it. Consistently basically ok Mexican food. Far from being the best in NYC, but did the job for quite awhile, until I discovered a better, cheaper place in the neighborhood. Everyone has a roster of local restaurants that they tend to frequent and repeatedly go to because they are just good places to eat and enjoy. Such is Refried Beans. We have been going for years now, our date night restaurant when we can go without worries of a reservation and enjoy a meal together. The place is small and comfortable and full of locals, families, couples old and young alike. And the staff is always friendly and the place is always busy and lively. We both love their frozen margaritas, smooth and icy cold and those with some chips and salsa and the tensions of the week melt away. Once relaxed we get down to the business of ordering: I am a fan of anything vegetable and have made it a habit now of ordering a vegetarian Fajita which is a mini feast of grilled vegetables, rice and bean, etc. Vin loves his burritos and these come grande filled and hot. The second round of margaritas is our dessert and we tend to linger and talk and watch the people come and go. In good weather there are tables outside too and on a warm night all this great food and drink make for a terrific time. read more

This is an excellent restaurant. My rating is more like a 4.4. The food is excellent and the owners really work hard to add fine touches to their dishes and they keep improving their recipes. Their cuisine is nuanced and displays a broad taste spectrum informed by various latin accents in addition to the dominant Mexican cuisine. We have been coming to his place on a regular basis for several years, and have dined at some of the best rated Mexican restaurants in New York City, and in other places around the country and this is one of our favorites. One nice thing in the place is that you get a diverse crowd and generally the clientele is very faithful. Being downtown people, we can dine downtown any time, but prefer to come here for Mexican. One suggestion for enhancing this already pleasant restaurant would be to put two large mirrors on the wall where those masks are. That would open up the space and make the restaurant seem larger; the curtains need some work too. Another thing that they could do to enhance their already great food, is to make sure that some of the herbs they sprinkle on their cooked dishes are completely green, like the cilantro. Often the cilantro appear a little wilted, but this is minor stuff. Oh yes, their Margaritas a very good and the service is always friendly. I hope that they continue to improve this place now that the owners are planning to open another restaurant. Yes, I agree that the name Redfriend Beans conjures up unhealthy food, but the food is not greasy. Another name would be more fitting for it; I can think of a name like Cafe Mexico, or something like that. Someone complained about their food being very spicy; that is totally not true. read more

I have not been to the restaurant but I have ordered for delivery. I will say that I was hugely disappointed with my meal. I ordered the Enchilada Suizas with extra cheese. What I got was a tiny order of two enchiladas; most places offer three pieces in this specific meal, the cheese was not abundant and since my meal was cold upon delivery, the cheese was congealed and dried up. There was barely any sour cream and the green sauce was basically non-existent on the dish. I wanted to love this place because I adore Mexican food and it's convenient to my house but I didn't. One positive is that the refried beans were really good. Bottom line, for what they charge and for what is actually involved in the dish, they could do a hell of a lot better. read more

The price of the food changes depending upon the waiter. When I pointed this out to the current waiter, his reply was "I'm just doing my job. The Manager isn't here. There's nothing I can do." The food isn't bad, but the prices are ridiculous. I called in an order for a carne asada burrito and was shocked when they told me it was $14. (There were no extras, just the burrito.) It was my fault for not asking the price until I picked it up, but I lived in San Francisco until recently and can't count how many burritos I've ordered. $7 is average (and I do mean *average* -- it's not hard to find a decent burrito for $6). $9 is considered *high*. Any more than that and you'd go out of business. And before anyone tells me that rent is high in NYC and that it's reflected in what a restaurant charges, believe me, rent in SF is just as high as NYC (or a very close second). I also realize this place is a sit-down restaurant and not a "burrito joint," but I know what goes into a burrito and $14 translates to an obscene markup. Especially -- with all due respect -- in Washington Heights. Ironically, I've had cheaper burritos in pricier parts of Manhattan. One other thing: the credit card minimum is $30. I have ordered from the restaurant for years and the food has always been good. However, the service level has decreased so much that I probably will no order again. I placed an order on 7/16 and was told 35 minutes for delivery. I called an hour later and was advised the delivery man had left and was on his way. 1 hour and a half later I called back again still no food. Finally the food is delivered cold, all tossed around the bag and the delivery mans excuse is they gave him the wrong address which is impossible as the receipt had the correct address. I called to speak to the manager who was absolutely rude and the only question he asked is if I did not want the food and proceeded to put the girl answering the phones on the line. He never stated he would call the deliver man to find out were he was, no apologize for the delay nothing. As much as I have always enjoyed this restaurant the service level has decreased and this is all the fault of management. If the owners of the restaurant want to get the service back to where it used to be they need to really look at who is running the place for them maybe then they will understand the issues and finally do something about it. read more

Ive ordered from this place many times. most times the food takes over an hour to reach my apartment which is only 7 blocks away. other times the food reaches my apartment in 25 min. The food here is ok to good and sometimes GREAT!!! , the service is awful. maybe i dont fit the managers standards of a ideal customer demographics I dont know , but I most certainly don't feel welcome. when i ask the waiter anything the waiter has a look on his face like "why are you even talking to me" Why would i continue going back or even order again if that's how i feel when i walk through the door. read more

Very easy if you order on Seamless, and incredibly fast delivery. Now, being from California, my expectations for Mexican food is incredibly high. I expect it to be flavorful and make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Now, this food was dry, bland, and makes me wish I had saved my money. If you're used to Mexican food on the East Coast then you'll probably like this place, however, if you're from California and know what real Mexican food is supposed to taste like, then please, keep walking. My husband and I have eaten at this place several times and we have always been very satisfied with the food and the service. First, the ceviche appetizer is excellent (and since my husband is Peruvian and knows a thing or two about ceviche, his approval means a lot). Secondly, I am a big fan of the shrimp burrito. It's very tasty, flavorful and the portion is plentiful. Make sure you order the sangria! It does not disappoint. The service is great. The people are polite, attentive, and always ready to accommodate your needs. The atmosphere is festive, appropriate for a Mexican grill, and not too loud. All this can be had for a very reasonable price and I can see why this place is a neighborhood favorite. read more

I have always gotten the chicken burrito, which is sizeable and comes with a small order of chips and great salsa. Also would recommend the guac. i ordered takeout from grub hub. the food was below sub par. my gf has steak tacos which looked less that appetizing. basic lettuce cheese and steak. the steak was over cooked and lack juice. i had the tacos al pastor. tacos al pastor usually feature a nice touch of 'sauce' that colors the meat pink. this was a big mess of sauce with meat in it. not only was it a mess but it tasted like bbq sauce that you buy at the super market. the meat was also fairly dry. will not be ordering from here again. good: large portions bad: food, guacamole is 3.50 and comes in a tiny container. read more

I like this restaurant when I eat there. The service is not always the most friendly, but their food is good. However, they fail when it comes to pick-up orders and delivery. They do not include salsa anymore, and they pack it so food gets smushed together. Just know they are good for dine-in and not for pick-up or delivery. read more

Consistency is key! I go to this spot more often than I should. Both the service and food quality sharply contrast visit to visit. The owners have two businesses less than a block from one another, my roommate and I frequent both, you'd think the owners would invest an interest in our presence but nope... We have loved this restaurant for years. The food is consistently delicious and authentic tasting. Our daughter used to eat the fresh guacamole as her dinner. The specials are creative and exciting to try and the place is extremely kid-friendly, which is important to us. The only drawback to eating here is that the service can be very slow-- great for a date night when you are nursing frozen drinks, but with two kids in tow, impatience sets in. Overall, we are huge fans! My husband always gets the fajitas and I have really loved the Enchiladas del Mar (seafood enchiladas) which are really creamy with just the right amount of spicy. read more
