I visited this location the day after the Chamblee/Brookhaven store, and the difference in experience was wildd. Night & Day. The level of service at Perimeter is exceptional--thoughtful, attentive, and genuinely elevated. Every associate I encountered greeted me & greeted me warmly. I think it was Bethany who sold me on the membership, but she made the experience personalized, not forced or sale-sy. She started a fitting room for me while I shopped & I always love that. She also told me about the resale section and I got a brand new jacket at a sale price. I also always love that The gentleman in the shoe department was equally impressive, providing expert guidance that made my selection feel confident and informed. He was always there but still gave me lots of space; you get me. Much bigger selection all around compared to the Expressway and the sale items were still relevant. Growing up in the PNW, I've been frequenting Recreational Equipment Inc. Co-Op for decades. Atlanta has several locations and some better than others. While they are much smaller than the Seattle's, they are more comprehensive gear shops around the Metro. This Perimeter REI is the best in our area. Sure, all Metro locations carry mostly same things plus or minus few inventory items / sizes. For me, it comes down to the staff and currently, this Sandy Springs REI has the most competent and attentive people. Recently, I ordered several hiking boots online and had to return one. I decided to return it to a store rather than by mail. I was educated on such huge staff knowledge differences on simple return process amongst local REI locations. It seems our consumer service level in most places have declined much in the past few years. However, as a Co-Op, REI has mostly kept up their service level even with my recent experience at another location. I appreciate Atlanta has many REI locations in a city that has very limited outdoor gear shops. One thing I absolutely find helpful at REI is their rock ramp to test the boots. Though when I was visiting many were shopping for OC sneakers. The staff here were more knowledgeable and helpful especially if you are early in your outdoor habits. Enjoy! read more

I came here yesterday to look for a pair of Hokas, which I was told were very comfortable shoes. Even though this REI location is in a strip mall, the free parking lot is large and provides more than enough parking spaces for everyone. Overall, this entire REI store looked like it was well stocked with just about anything and everything that an outdoors type of person would find useful. I went to the shoe department at the back of the store, but didn't find anything. A nice and friendly store employee, who I found out was knowledgeable about the shoes, approached me and gave me lots of help. Unfortunately, I wasn't happy enough with the selection of Hokas, so I didn't buy any. I did find out that I could buy shoes here and return them within 30 days (I think that's what he said), even after wearing them outside for all that time, if I was an REI member (which I am). I actually didn't know about this return policy here. I love this store! Lots of quality items for activities I don't even care for, but the items I saw (like wall climbing shoes, cold weather trail running gear, and headgear with lights on them for hiking in the dark) are cool anyhow. This place isn't cheap, though. Just about everything is expensive. I guess you pay for quality, huh? While I was walking around, another employee asked if I needed help finding anything. read more

Prior to owning a dog I loved this store. Being a dog owner and not being allowed to bring Fido inside your stores is a basis to lose me as a customer. I will shop local, try mountain high outfitters instead which is dog friendly and has better products and prices. It's an utter shame the disrespect employees show towards customers with dogs. Even non-outdoor stores allow dogs. You should stop selling dog related products because you aren't dog friendly. read more

I can always count on REI to have the right gear. (My only complaint about REI is stuff can be expensive.) I've always found plenty of helpful service at REI. The last time i went, one person took extra special care of my Mom as she was looking for a heavy jacket and other winter accessories. I have partaken of a variety of REI classes and activities, and definitely recommend them to everyone. Even the beginners. REI had always been an intimidating place for me to try to explore alone. I'm not a very outdoorsy type of person, so I would never have been found in REI unless it were a bomb shelter (ok, too much, I know). I had an issue with my cycle shoes, which I had bought at REI exactly one year ago for my spin classes at the gym. A screw had come loose and I was having trouble tightening it properly, making for the most inefficient and ineffective classes. I finally found the time to bring the shoes in. One of the REI workers saved my life (and my poor legs) by not only fixing the shoe and screwing in the new clips I had, but made sure both shoes were up and running. For free! Thanks for the great service! It seems that each time I do come to REI has been during the annual sale they have in May. I ended up wandering the sale sections and bought a new pair of Shimano cycle clips for my shoes, for if this situation ever happened again and I would need new clips or screws. They were on sale and I got them as a steal for $13.50 (I bought a pair on Amazon for $25, omg...). I'm always satisfied with the service and quality at REI. I'm still intimidated to go inside alone, but once I muster up enough courage, I'm able to get in and out in one piece. read more

Amazing staff! I frequent this REI for all my outdoor gear needs. They have a wide selection of gear and very informative and friendly staff. Up until now, I haven't interacted much with staff (other than at checkout). I usually go into the store to stare at items I can't afford or with a specific purchase in mind. Last night, I visited the store to take advantage of the sales and purchase a new pair of hiking boots. I already had done some research and quickly found the pair I intended to purchase. I had no experience wearing this particular brand, so I requested help from staff to identify the correct boot size. The process was straightforward and I felt more comfortable with my purchase in the end. Boot Fitting Process: 1. She measured my feet and brought out the smallest feasible size for comfort 2. I grabbed a pair of wool socks from a basket of clean hiking socks (available to everyone trying on the boots), and slipped them on along with the boots 3. I walked around the entire store and up/down the small ramp in the shoe section 4. The boots felt a bit too tight, so I requested a 1/2 size up and a "wide" version. However, the size I wanted to try was not in stock for the specific boot, so the employee helped me identify another boot (the low-rise version) to try on in a 1/2 size up instead. 5. Someone in the backpack section helped me load up a backpack, so I could walk around with the shoes and a pack to feel it out. Overall, I had a very positive experience with the staff here. They are always trying to help - I actually avoid eye contact when I don't need help, because if you make eye contact, they will ask you if they can help you with anything. read more

OK, so REI does not have the best prices for gear. I wanted to say that up-front so you understand that you don't go to REI stores for uber-cheap bargains. The real reason to go to REI is for their vast selection of great quality camping, cycling and other outdoor gear. Well, actually there are two reasons to go to REI, and the second is perhaps vastly more important - great customer service, maintained by some of the most knowledgeable staff on the planet. Now I'm an experienced camper and backpacker, so I've done a bit of reading on gear, actually probably more than I should. I've also done enough cycling, rafting, and other outdoor activities to be slightly above average compared to someone who knows nothing about those subjects. The great thing about REI's staff is that they know what questions to ask you when you're thinking about experimenting with something new, to gage what equipment is best suited for you. This is really, really important. I know far too many people who buy top-end equipment for something like rock-climbing, to only find they really don't like it, ending up wasting money, time and having to dispose of stuff they don't want or need. I think you can walk into just about any department in REI and find a knowledgeable member to get your questions answered. Or if they don't know they'll find someone who does - and this extends to the equipment. I like hearing questions like "Have you done this before? What's your experience been? Have you tried this?" You end up walking out of the store much more confident in your purchases - and if you aren't happy REI's return policy is very good. This Perimeter area store is a bit smaller (I think) than the store on the I85 access road, but I've always managed to find what I need. It's close to work so I ended up going often - seems there's always something new to look at, even if I don't buy (eye-candy!). Finally, they do have some great sales so you can manage purchasing at a bit of a discount. REI's sales are well worth attending. Oh and make sure you become an REI Member - as you make purchases throughout the year you ended up with a yearly dividend that can be used towards more purchases. REI apparently doesn't do customer service any longer. Rude employees focused only on mask compliance. Even though I told the woman at the door I had a pickup, she wouldn't go get it or ask one of the at least 4 idle employees milling about to do so. No, "welcome to REI", "let me get that for you", or "thank you for your business". Just rude orders such as, "I need you to wait outside" which I told her I'd do but she made no effort to retrieve my order. They've turned their business model from a fun, in-store experience, which differentiated them from their competition, to an online commodity business. They've lost my business to Amazon where I can purchase a wider variety of less expensive products. The only reason I purchased there was because I needed a small item today for a camping trip tomorrow. read more

I went in here today and would love to share my experience with this store! An avid rei fan, I often go to the stores or online to buy my outdoor gear. I purchased some bike handlebar grips back in Asheville a few months ago and they did not fit. I went here for new ones. One guy at the bike shop at this rei convinced me that a clearance pair would work. I walked out to my bike in my car to try them out and alas, another fail so I walked back in to try again. This time, Erik helped me out. I only ever want Erik to work on my bike for all it's days. He was knowledgeable. He explained that his coworker got confused but he could help out. He took the pair of grips I bought in Asheville and cut them to fit! A custom fit indeed! In addition to helping me finally getting some grips that worked, he adjusted my gears and fixed my wheel. He was outstanding! He explained everything well and gave me excellent advice for future care. All of the employees here (even the one that accidentally sold me the incorrect grips) were professional and kind. The store was well stocked and clean and employees attentive. Look, I don't have a need to shop here that often, but I have been here enough and the experience is always the same. Long line with one very slow cashier and other employees just standing around appearing to do nothing. So frustrating. The store is well laid out, with large signs that direct you to the right place to find what you need - rarely can you find a store associate to direct you to where you need to go. It is a rarity for someone to ask you before you look completely lost and helpless. This is also frustrating. That all being said - this is the best place to get certain items. Timbuk 2 bags, water shoes, thermal socks, etc. And therefore, I will continue to come here when life demands I buy these types of products. But I will be sure to allow myself twice as much time as a normal shopping experience should require. read more

In preparation for our month-long trip to China this April, the mister and I headed to REI. I needed what any real backpacker needs... a backpack. Oh, sure, I already had a backpack....a way-too-big one my mom had purchased for me before I set off on my first Asian Adventure. Then, I was going for 5 months to study abroad. I had never been to China. I had no idea what I was doing. So I got a truly gigantic backpack. It has served me well across 3 continents, but it isn't practical for a month of hardcore backpacking. So off to REI we went! And I found my dream backpack, thanks to the friendly REI man who patiently listened to my wants, needs, and strict budget guidelines. I even got an awesome deal on the backpack. He said it was on sale, but it didn't ring up that way at the cash register. Turns out it was a slightly different model that was on sale, but he told the cashier to give me the discount price anyway, because that was the price he'd told me. WHAT?! How often does that happen, y'all? I was so very happy to get my dream backpack for a fraction of the cost. I also got an awesome shirt. If y'all have never tried one of the REI-brand long-sleeved athletic shirts, you are in for a treat. The women's clothing attendant enthusiastically gushed that she owned at least 5 of these shirts. I'm planning on heading over there this weekend to purchase a second. I've put it to the test, both exercising and just normal day-wear, and it's a great shirt. Absorbs moisture, keeps you cool when it's hot and hot when it's cool. Just make sure you go in there with a budget in mind and stick to that...otherwise, you might just get swept away by the coolness of all their travel gear and totally break the bank! read more

(For any of you who don't know what this stuff is, it's great...gets the funky smell out of your frequently-worn workout or camping clothes.) On a friend's recommendation, I headed to REI today over lunch to see what I could find. Not only did I find what I was looking for, but I found just about everything else I could possibly want that has anything to do with the great outdoors. Everyone was super helpful and friendly. Great store in Perimeter Area. The store is nice, clean, big...but not too big. I found a lot of stuff on clearance and was able to try things on without too much trouble. I also found out that Lucy Activewear is sold at REI [I use to shop at Lucy in CA and didn't think I would find them elsewhere other than their online store.] Yay for that since I love Lucy. It's similar to Lululemon activewear, but also caters to exploration wear [that is nice and well fitted], and I'm so happy. In the spring and summers, ski gear is on sale, which i normally nab up, but I didn't think I needed anything this year. Good sales though. read more

REI is a hometown staple for me, being from the northwest. This store is pretty standard. Everything was easy to navigate and they seemed to have everything that other stores have. The only real difference (and a minor one I admit) is this store has automatic doors. All the other stores I've been to have huge wooden doors with climbing axes for handles. This is a great store with helpful staff that carries anything you'd need for outdoor adventuring. Not a hunting or fishing store though, so don't take your redneck cousins in for rifles. This is for the serious camping/hiking crowd. I've always been pleased with my purchases, and the in-store brand are often the best and most reasonably priced. Also, they have a great return policy. I recommend signing up for a membership. It's free, you get a portion of the money you spend back at the end of the year, and they track your purchases for you so if you ever need to return/exchange anything it makes it super simple. Also, they have a great online store and online outlet store. Everything can be shipped to the store from online for free pick up. read more

I came here out of desperation cause I am last minute shopper, and my mom who forgot to tell me what she wanted until the last minute. Something North Face, and I knew REI was a big North Face seller so I ventured down here on Dec 24. The store isnt all that bad, kinda big. Good selection, however, I guess for the holidays alot of stuff was unorganized kinda thrown on to hangers so it took me a good minute to find what I wanted. But as I was walking through I noticed their selection of outdoors equipment is huge and if I needed a tent or something I will definitely bypass everywhere else and just come here. read more

I love REI in general, and I love EVERYTHING about this location in particular. The staff here are nice and so knowledgeable about the products they are selling. I used to only come to REI for camping goods, but I have recently decided to shop there for other sporting items as well. To illustrate why, I will tell you about my spinning shoes. I wanted to buy some mountain biking shoes with a particular type of cleat (SPD, in case you care) that allows them to attach to the pedals of stationary bikes used in my spin class. Before going to REI, I tried a nearby Sports Authority store. The store was in a shambles, it took me forever to find someone to help me, and then I found out that they didn't stock cycling shoes. This last part isn't necessarily a mark against them, but both the person who explained this to me and the person who checked me out (I bought other items that day) seemed apathetic and a little incompetent. I left feeling annoyed. Contrast this to my experience in REI. Not only did they have the shoes I was looking for, but one of the cycling department staff members was more than happy to attach the cleats to my new shoes for me, while explaining what he was doing and why. He was extremely friendly, as was everyone with whom my husband and I came into contact during our visit. As we browsed the store, we were approached several times by staff who wanted to assist us. Unlike in some stores where you get the feeling they're really wondering if you're going to steal something, I truly felt that these employees were eager to help us. It's a little mindblowing, isn't it? I also purchased some running shoes. The selection of running shoes at REI might be a little smaller than that of some sporting goods stores, but the shoes they did have were very reasonably priced. I think I may never go to a sporting goods store again. From now on, I'm going to REI for athletic equipment. read more

I am not an outdoorsy person, I mean my favorite sports to watch are hockey and Formula 1, and well, I'm not going to be participating in any of those anytime nor are they really the type of thing you find here. And even if I was into this sort of stuff, I could not afford it for like a decade. I always hate getting dragged here actually. Because it is just not interesting to me and well, the stuff that is I cannot afford as stated above. And then for Valentine's Day my boyfriend decides he's going to get me hiking boots. Despite my best protests, it won't work. I hiked up Blood Mountain a couple years ago in boys shoes from Target, so I mean the concept of $150+ shoes meant solely for hiking is absolutely ridiculous since I can't remember the last time I even went hiking. But my landforms class has led me to learn about a lot of really cool things here in Georgia so I kind of want to see them. But really, hiking boots? They aren't my style. So I thought, until we came in here and there's these charcoal and purple boots. Ok I can do this I guess. I had tried on boots the day before and hated it so much. Purple, well I'll give it a shot. The people who work here know their stuff. It was completely different from where I was before. My feet were measured, I was given proper socks, and even told what to do about my really really ridiculously high arches. I had been under the impression my right foot was just a bit bigger than my left and I was wrong. And I would have gone with 8s, because in my usual shoes I go up to 8 but it turned out 7.5 would be fine. And these purple boots actually fit, and here I was told what to look for (no movement of the heel and no movement of the toes on an incline) and we talked a bit about basic day hikes and yeah, I went from being super grumpy about this to walking out of the place in the boots. I also got a bit of understanding of why $220 is acceptable if you're like hardcore into hiking. You can resole these forever and ever and ever. So now to try them out somewhere around here. We have so many options! Also I will say I have bought something from them before, I got my serious business winter coat on REI's outlet website for $65, so even though there's tons of things that feel out of your price range, things can still end up working. eta: a couple days later I came by to buy a gift card for my boyfriend's birthday on behalf of my parents. The cashier was a dick. It was so un-REI that I called the manager after I got home with it. I doubt anything was really done but he was rude and unfriendly. He didn't say a word to me except "ok" when I told him the gift card amount. He also thought it'd be funny to tell the woman who was checking out when I walked in that all sales are final. She did not find it funny. read more

REI is amazing, from customer service to the generous return policy. I bought a pair of shoes, one of them did not pan out, took them back about a month later, ZERO hassle. I love stores with good return policies, it makes me comfortable with spending more o confident purchases. I had a bike tune up done at this location, they did a fantastic job. With the REI member card it was less then $100. I had the pedals switched out for the clips, which they did in less then 5 minutes, after the store was closed. They waited for me, and my dead battery on my car to come on over. They switched out SPD shoes on my spin shoes, and locked them in better. Saving me $$ when they could have said, buy new ones. I don't feel there is any ulterior motives other then to help out customers. My first experience, I thought it was a cult, sign up for a member, how can I help you, on and on... Shoes, camping, biking gear, and coupons, LOVE REI. read more

This is my first visit to REI and to be honest, I haven't walked out of an REI I didn't like. That holds true here as well. I actually came here looking for a hiking quick dry shirt, as i'd ripped my last one. The lay out was slightly different than what I was used to but one of the staff asked if I needed help and took me right to where I needed to be. Offered up suggestions about their long sleeves as well, since they seemed to be stocking the floor with Autumn gear. They didn't have the color I was hoping for....well, okay they did, just nothing larger than a small, but I left with a shirt I wanted anyway. Very chill, open environment filled with employees who know their stuff about gear you need. Yes, there is sticker shock at times but when I find quality material, I don't mind spending a little more. One additional thing I liked about this location is there is plentiful parking, what with this one being part of a quasi-strip mall, so unlike other locations I frequent, you don't have to worry so much about finding parking. This is one of my favorite places to shop. There is a ton of cool stuff and I can spend a couple hours checking out clothes and the various gear they offer. They have great brands, and truly stand behind there products with a rock solid return policy. If you don't like it, return it. If it breaks, return it. Not many places make it painless to return stuff, and REI does. This alone makes it a great place to shop. When ever we go on a camping trip it's fun to take a stroll to see if there is a new gadget or something fun that will make the trip a bit more enjoyable. Factor in the trendy items, sales, and the occasional clearance rack item you can snag for a huge discount makes this a place that I like to frequent. They also have camping and hiking gear for dogs. One tip to remember is that you can always purchase stuff on their website and ship it to the store for free if you don't want to pay shipping. I tend to be pretty loyal to my local running stores, so I am ashamed to say that, as a brand new cyclist, REI has won my soul. After a few years of being a runner, I decided to give tri a try. Not being an idiot or made of money, I decided on getting a used bike from craigslist as opposed to dropping $800 on something I've never done before and not even sure I'll enjoy. Only problem: the seat on my graet deal of a bike was awful. So, in preparation for a bike trip to the Smoky Mountains, the boyfriend yanked the seat post out and we headed to REI. The girl in the bike area (canNOT remember her name) was extremely helpful. She gave excellent advice on what the best options for a seat were including what was within my price range, what she liked, and what to expect as a new cyclist and finding a seat that works for me. I walked out with an awesome seat that saved my butt (literally) on the tough rolling hills around the Smokies over the weekend. I definitely plan on coming back here when my bike needs a tune up and also when i venture into the realm of those cute cycling shoes with the matching pedals. That smug PFO smile and the "you're out of luck" statement at customer service made my blood boil. How unfortunate. REI is one of the last few shops where I enjoyed coming in. After that 5 minute interaction, there's no reason to come in. What's the point of even being a "Co-Op" member, what an absolute joke. REI in general is my favorite store. The customer service here is fantastic. I walked in wanting a very specific item (fleece or pile vest) and the guy helping me showed me 3 different brands, the pros and cons of each, and told me the special (buy over 50 of merch get a 20 dollar gift card). Brought my retro Schwinn to this shop last Friday and not only did Hunter, the bike tech, spend over 2 hours with me fixing my ride (saving my day and my life in a way) he did this at the tail end of an exhaustingly long shift, holding the shop down himself (due to his co-worker being taken out by the intense pollen this week). I commute on my bike & Hunter gave my Schwinn SUCH high level care & precise diagnosis that any Tour-de-France competitor would have noted it, appreciated it & been impressed by it. Hunter knows it ALL as bikes are a longstanding passion - he and his brother have both competed at professional levels and his expertise and love of the ride are impossible to miss or mistake. I am SO appreciative of his work and time and just had to blast it to all of you Yelpers because it is people like Hunter that not only make REI great but that make the world beautiful because of true passion, grit, hard work and generosity !
