Venturing into an REI store create something of an internal struggle for me... On one hand, I am reminded of my great love for all things outdoors-- hiking, kayaking, fishing, camping, cycling-- The list is long, indeed. On the other, I sort of shake my head a little bit at the notion that one believes s/he needs a $400 holo-fill jacket for a two night stay in the San Gabriel Mountains. Still, I signed up for a membership years ago, and regularly spend my dividend purchasing all sorts of odds and ends. Like many sporting good stores, REI has sort of transformed into a shoe and clothing store, that carries expensive headlamps, ice chests, and water bottles. Yet I often find myself shopping for a gift for the wife here. I suppose I'm a lucky man that I can pick up something at a jewelry store or at REI, and I'm equally a long hike from the doghouse and a birthday or Christmas. I recently stopped in here to look for a seats for my wash deck sit on top kayaks. Sun and surf have a way of eating up canvas. Much like Bass Pro, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Big 5, they did not have any in the store. The benevolent millennials running the front end encouraged me to look online. Granted, they had several clipped to the top of new kayaks leaning against a display in the store, but because they were not barcoded with a SKU, they were not able to sell them to me. In the end, I looked online... Found them on Amazon, and purchased three. Tough break for the retail stores, I guess, on that one, but good for my bottom line and my bottom sitting on floating Tupperware. But don't worry, REI, I still love you, and I'll be back. Where else will I find a Yeti Cooler Hopper 12 for $250? Incidentally, Yeti cooler plugs work perfectly as kayak drain plug replacements, which are hard to find. So there's that. read more

Pleasant environment to shop in. Fun to walk in and browse all their stuff. Lifetime membership is $30, definitely worth it. Some of their sales are great, if you cant afford to buy anything today, just wait for a sale. Their items tend to be of good quality and will last you a while. They have pretty much everything you need to spend time outdoors in any way! They even have books and maps. Emergency supplies, too. read more

Bought a bike there recently, and honestly was a great experience. Given the difficulty of finding the bike you want anywhere lately, the folks at REI really walked me through the whole process and helped me pick out the best one for my needs. Once I bought my bike and accessories, the shop team put it all together for me and attached all my accessories so all I had to do was ride it out the door! Special thanks to Josh and Matt in the shop, Alexa (with the tattoos) for helping me choose my accessories and Q (his name tag just had a single letter? lol), and the bike shop team for getting me set up. Kudos to the Rancho Cucamonga Store Ski Shop staff. I went in to get new ski bindings mounted and boots (heat) fitted. The staff were all wonderful. Big shout out to: the ski Tech for prioritizing my work so I didn't have to come back again (3 hours and a half tank of gas); the girl at the ski register, for being so helpful, friendly and going out of her way for me; and the Manager who helped me so courteously with the boot fitting. You are probably going to pay full price for gear and equipment here, but the service and expertise is something that cannot be replaced. We often only get so many days out of the year for trips or vacations. So you want them to turn out as great as possible, especially if you are going to spend them in the great outdoors. In my case, I needed a new pair of good hiking boots and was going to settle on buying a high quality pair. I knew buying online wasn't going to fly. I wanted to put each pair on and test them out to see what I needed for good, all day hikes. Carl in shoes was extremely patient. He is a true expert on boots and sized me properly and started plopping down boots for me to try. They even have a test rock you can walk on which looks like a large piece of granite, essential if you are hiking the Sierra Nevada's like I am, which is essentially a 400 mile long piece of granite. Turns out, the boots I thought I wanted to buy online, were not right for me at all (Keen). The boots I really wanted to like and was suggested by multiple people on an online forum were great, but not what I was looking for (Oboz). So I put on a pair of Vasque Breeze III's and found my perfect boot. As a bonus, Carl helped me learn a new way of tying my boots to prevent my laces from loosening up . I love Amazon as next as the next person, but some things have to be done in store with passionate experts who are not motivated by sales commission, but rather love of their sport. REI will continue to be the place for me. read more

I take my sons bike in here all the time and not only are they super friendly but they are super fast and reasonably priced. My son is 13 so super hard on his bike and I will admit I know nothing about fixing it. I would recommend them 100%. read more

My go to spot they spent the time to fit me just right for the hiking pack I needed and even added the weight to give me the real feel of it. I walked around the store and after 8 packs I found the right one for my body. read more

This place was terrible. First, we walked in and the employees were standing by the front and watched us as we walked in but didn't greet us. Second, we waited for like 10 minutes for someone to help us because my mom needed to try on shoes. Not until I started walked around looking for someone with the shoes in my hand did someone finally ask if we needed help. Third, the girl that was helping us was so persistent and when my mom started deciding that she didn't like any of the shoes she tried on, the girl just got up and left without saying anything. A rather interesting visit to the store today around noon. I came into get a pair of either HOKA or Brooks shoes. I need them in 4E because I have wide feet. The first gentleman that I spoke to gave me a couple of options and went back to see if they had my size. When he returned. He said that he didn't have any of that type in 4E. Before I left I decided to go ahead and ask another question to see what shoes they might actually have in 4E. The gentleman that I spoke to before was not available so I was able to speak to a young lady. This is where things went south. I simply ask " What shoes do you have in size? 4E.". Now given, she may have been having a bad day or something else was going on, but her response to me which will not translate well here was simply an abruptly "None, We only have regular wide shoes". And then proceeded to walk off. I was actually stunned. Given this response. The other items that I had in my hands which included a number of shirts, sweatshirt, socks, etc. That probably told an excess of $800 all went back on the shelves. Customer service is your business. If you can't, take the time to check your attitude as an employee and simply respond, " I'm really sorry but unfortunately we don't care for ease in the store but they're probably available online if you'd like to look there. Is there anything else set up could help you with though?". You would have actually ended up probably having a fairly large purchase credited to your store. However, you've most definitely lost a return customer. If somebody from REI would like to respond to this to this, I will be more than happy to speak with you. The person that was rude was working in the Rancho Cucamonga store around noon on July 14th 2023. She was blonde and about 5 ft 5. Unfortunately I didn't get her name tag. This Gear WH*RE approves! In desparate "need" of a new pair of snowboarding boots, well, maybe "need" is a strong word. Having my feet in a brand new furry pair of Burtons gives me heart flutters that rivals a first date with any hot guy, with the exception of Usher of course. At first, I couldn't get any help from the staff, so I waited for what seems like 10 minutes. Once the staff came over and understood my "needs" (wants), he measured my foot to ensure proper sizing of the boots, then educated me all about the different tightening mechanisms and the pros and cons of each. He helped me try on several pairs of boots of different brands until I found the most comfortable pair. I also ordered a new snowboard during their winter sale; discounted to 50%. Arbor boards are THE BEST! Gotta support the local businesses. read more

Overheard him say these expensive shoes are only for certain professions/sports (aka people who can afford them) & that they never go on sale as if refusing to sell the shoes based on the customer's appearance. I'll never forget the name River. December has approached and the holiday season feels bleak. Christmas shopping around and inside the mall has always been hectic, but this year, it felt kinda different. When I approached this store I didn't think much of it. I was tagging along with my friend and they needed to get some socks, for his mom. He's a sweet guy, assertive, but sweet. He went one way, I went the other. I was in my own world and I expected it to be packed with all these great items on sale, but nevertheless, it was calm. There was this vibe to the store that felt peaceful, as if I was actually one with nature. After a couple of minutes wondering, I glance and see my friend talking with an associate. I walk over and I hear him talking about a sale that was going on for members. Without hesitation, he acknowledges me and asks "Are you a member?" and I was stunned. He didn't exclude me. It was a warm welcoming feeling. We ended up talking for a cool minute and turns out he's a well rounded individual. It got on a personal level. I look at his name tag and it said "River". I'll never forget that name, and this special holiday season. Store 93 gave that Christmas connection I've been yearning for. Below the name tag, they had the name of their favorite place that they've been too. He asked for mine and I replied "Denton, Texas." read more

I recently purchased reef shoes for my sister and had it sent to the store and had no problems picking it up. We perused the store and purchased some mosquito repellent for her upcoming trip for a decent price. I bought something here 8 years ago and remember paying $20 for membership and they still had me in their computer and my membership is still active! We went into REI educate ourselves on Jackets for Germany in the winter for a up coming trip. Alexia was so informative and did a great job showing us the different types of jackets that would fit our needs. She also told us the benefits of being a member. We then Went to the shoe department to see about boots for winter trip. Chad helped us and was amazingly educated on different boot types. He also told us about the benefits of being a member. At that point we agreed it was a good idea. We made one more stop to the Men's dept and met Paige who show us all the different types of layering that might be helpful to us. This was our first time in the store and we were very pleased with the customer service we received. With so many places unable to keep employees this place is top notch. read more

This REI is much smaller than the average one I've been to. You'll still find the supplies you need here and the friendly staff to help though. There does always seem to be a line however. At first I just assumed it's because everyone loves REI, which is true, but i realized it's mostly due to the nonchalant attitude of the workers at the counter. There is no sense of urgency from them, and they constantly chat to each other. Being friendly is cool, but when your line is from the counter to the shoes in the back of the store (not an exaggeration) you should probably pick up the pace. What shocked me most was when I was checking out it was the manager. Took 20 minutes! Not even kidding! And the same work ethic was coming from her. Chatting, taking her time, asking random questions. Like I said I get it, I come from a customer service background, but come on we got other places to be. So be ready for a long wait if you go, and if you need something quick, use their website not their store read more

I just came back from an interesting class at REI on bike touring. The presenter was not good at presenting but he did have a lot of information to cover and I did benefit from it. I do have to give it to them for offering tons of free classes from hiking to biking to practical hands on trainings. I would buy so many things here if I were a lot more outdoorsy/athletic and if I were feeling like spending a lot of money :) The prices are a bit high, but like someone else said, it is definitely worth it because you do indeed get what you pay for: quality. Whatever I have purchased here, whether it be for camping, biking, hiking, or travel gear, it has always been useful and good quality and that is all you can really ask for. To top it off, the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, so make sure to ask any questions you may have regarding your hobby. read more

Quality merchandise and Passionate Staff. This was my first experience with an REI and honestly I had no idea what to expect. We were instantly greeted by a very knowledgeable young lady who was passionate about her work and the joy she knew the items she sold would bring to a couple looking to explore the outdoors. Every associate I saw was engaging with their guests with care and empathy and they were creating relationships not just transactions. Nice store, cannot STAND when employees pull the whole pretend-they-don't-see-you move instead of offering to help. This was in the shoe department, where you basically have to ask an employee for help because of stock being in the back room. There were two ladies (well, one super young-looking girl) working back there. One was actually helping a customer. The girl was just sort of standing around with them. After 20 minutes of waiting, we went and stood right in front of the girl. She looked RIGHT PAST US and addressed the male employee coming over from a different department. HE was the one who asked us if we needed help. Uh, yeah. And the young chick disappeared and still didn't help us. Whatever. I'm not a hiking enthusiast (boyfriend had a gift card) and am not into overpriced gear, which is what REI carries. Your service sucks, REI. Train your entitled little employees or get them out of there. read more

I haven't praised a business in a long long time but today I have to praise this manager at REI, Mr Wendell Nelson. I do hope REI do care about this review and let this manager know he is doing a great job leading his team and taking great care of its customer. I walked today to this store with my husband and placed an order for a $500 tent, hours later we found out that a better color choice is available online and wanted to change the order. So often the store will tell you " sorry but once we place the order for you, it is out of my hand, you have to call the 800 number and talk to them bla bla bla" NOT TODAY, Mr Nelson made the call for us. He was super nice and patient, today is a Friday before memorial day weekend and the store was packed, while he was making the call, he was praising his colleagues one by one for the great work they are doing, encouraging them to keep up the good work. I was really impressed and felt that a great team start with great leadership and I was glad that he was the manager at the REI in our town. I have always felt welcomed in this store and now I know why, as a customer I do appreciate that a store manager would show so much care for his colleagues and customers. You can really tell that this this person really loves his job and moves everybody to perform to its best ability. I left the store very happy and totally impressed. read more

I shop here before Bass Pro Shops The Great: They have a 100% guarantee on nearly every product (maybe on all of them?) I used it on a raincoat. I brought it back and they just refunded my card. The staff checks in with you even when they're obviously off the clock and they know what the hell they're talking about. I took Austin's advice on the Salomon hiking boots($279) and the silk sock liners($9.50) and now I'm frustrated with all of my other hiking gear because my feet are so happy. They have a club card that gives you 10% back every year plus a 20% coupon on any one item. I just paid $60 for a GoreTechs like raincoat/wind breaker that retailed at $100 with my annual discounts. Kind of nice. The Bad: They don't sell ammo so I still have to go to Bass Pro Shops. I think they may be priced a bit higher but with the advice, return policy and quality I shop here first. read more

Good selection of items and had what my wife and i were looking for. Only reason for the 2 stars is they kept harping on us joining the membership for $20. After i said no thanks the first time, then at the register again say no thank you politely. The lady kept going on about how amazing it is and how she hates to see people leave money that she could spend. We do not shop at this place enough to spend money to join. On Sept. 3 2020 I purchased a hybrid Cannondale bicycle from REI. I liked it a lot, so on Sept 6 I purchased one for my wife. Together, these bikes cost just short of $9000.00, which I know is a lot right, but we ride very often and often even use the bikes for our commute to work. The bikes are really great but we found that they have a flaw. The charging port for the recharger has an L-shaped cover that does not hold in place well, and there is no lanyard or catch to keep the cover from getting lost when, not if, it comes out. One is now lost. This cover is absolutely a necessity to be in place because the charge port is located at the bottom of the bike between the down-tube for the seat and the 45 degree stiffener bar, right where all the dirt and gravel bits are kicked-up from the front tire. I called REI to get customer service. I was certain there would be no problem because REI is a great company and would take care of me. The first response from the bike tech was, Cannondale isn't shipping bike parts. What? What if you received a bike that was missing this cover, would you be able to get it? A...a...a, I'll get my boss. I got moved up the line to a person that calls himself 'Q'. He started out with the same answer that came from his bike tech, no parts. I asked Q how he would like to have an 8 month old car that he couldn't get a part for so he had to hold a part in place with blue painter's tape, as that is what we presently have on the bike? I also pointed out that I could buy a used pickup truck for what these 2 bikes cost. After hearing this logic string, Q stated he would handle it. He stated that he would get it taken care of through his rep. He said he would call me but was off the next day. But, on Saturday, I received no call back. Sunday no call. Monday no call. I called Tuesday, Q isn't here today. That's where we stand at this moment. I left a message for Q and am still waiting for that callback. Totally dissatisfied with REI's service, or lack thereof. Totally dissatisfied with Cannondale bikes too. How can you build and sell a product if there are no parts. Parts to build bikes and parts to service them come from the same pile of parts don't they? It appears that they can build them, and they can sell them, they just won't service them. REI, you are looking like a 2-bit company here. read more

She carried all my things around while helping pick the best jacket and pants. She was so friendly and personable. I just love the customer service here!! I have not had one issue since I first started coming here. The wide range of equipment and great customer service is why I always come back. When my girlfriend and I came in to look for hiking boots, the REI team had no problem explaining everything to us. They had us try on multiple types to see which was best for us and also showed us ways to tie our shoelaces when going onto hikes. The store is usually clean and well organized, I usually no have problem finding what I need. On a side note, if you are not a member, you should be. Their garage items are definitely worth it, and you will make your money back in no time. Its a one time payment of $20, but sometimes they'll have promotions such as, "become a member receive a $20 gift card" etc. Its definitely worth it, especially if you're planning on shopping here a bit. read more

Customer service no so great. Tried to grab an associates attention. Had to ask him, if he worked here. Gave me a whimsical look like of course he does even though I had to stop him as he zoomed by. Then he said he would send someone my way. A few minutes go by another associate wonders by and so we decided to leave. So sad all these places on yelp continually get bad reviews because the employees don't understand the human element of customer service. Yes, Customer SERVICE. Taylor was super helpful in the shoe dept. I was looking to replace worn down hiking shoes. Taylor was immediately available and patient with helping me select a few options. When i asked if there was a sale, she was forthcoming that there indeed would be sale in about a week. Since i didn't need the shoes right away, i could wait and save a bit. She then wrote down the size and styles for reference to buy later. She was not pushy. And really took her time to explain some things with the different brands.
