This has been elevated to a pandemic frequent flyer for me. Grabbed all new ski gear end of last season and it was a pleasure in the mass conflicted population. The staff from front to back and side to side all over the store re top notch, friendly, helpful and so kind the smiles are evident even with masks in place. Mask policies were in place an adhered too by both staff as well as patrons. I'm not sure if the mask wearers were just a sign of the good people who shop at this store or if the policies were enforced. Online ordering was a breeze and the ever friendly staff either staffed a pickup desk or at my option would come out to do a curbside pickup. My ski boots were offered a nice hot fit and I am so happy I went with this option the boots fit as well as any I have owned. I wish mother nature would pull through with a couple ample snow dumps so i can put them to work. Bought some REI branded gloves and wasn't a fan at all. They offered an apology and a full refund to which I applied for an absolutely over the top combo glove / mitten with warmth so perfect for the coldest of days that I now have 3 sets of gloves that are packed variable conditions. no need to stumble with the fraudulent gear from Amazon, this is always the real deal. My new Keen hiking boots are supremely comfortable around the campfire as well as on the full range of hikes. The member rewards are still in play and make for a fun trip on the house when they come do. Before my most recent visit, I'd visited this REI location a couple of times. To look at their selection of trail running shoes, and compare selection and price to several other locations I'd been to in the area. On my previous visits to my last I hadn't purchased anything, but did get the opportunity to try on several of the trail shoes. During my 1st visits I opted to go with something that they did not have in stock, but this last time led me back for something that I new they did have. Between all of my visits the staff was very friendly and helpful, and assisted me in finding what I was looking for. And giving me the opportunity to try out in the store the various shoes I'd tried on. And with this last visit the employee that helped me and I, talked back and forth about various shoes we either have or have had. And the shoes that might suite my needs based on what I'd told him I've had before, and what I was currently replacing; and ultimately I decided on a pair of Hoka Speedgoat 3's. During our talk the REI employee told me about their REI membership and son of it's benefits, on top of REI product test and return policy. He's let me know that REI allows you to try a purchased item like their trail shoes I was deciding on for up to a year, which I thought was amazing. As with most running shoes, especially trails shoes. You can't really see how well they work (of when they fail) until you've put at least 50 miles into there. Which varies in time depending on the time of running you do and how often you do it. And with being able to only trail run maybe every other week. It would easily take me past a standard 30-90 day return policy to see if I even actually like the shoes I purchased. Plus he let me know that members are open to what REI describes are their "Garage" days, where items that have been returned and that can't be sold as new. Are sold on these specific days to REI members only at a heavily discounted rate. So you can get gear in great condition at a good discount. Those things are what sold me on purchasing my new trail shoes from here, at the afford you the opportunity to really try out their products. And if by chance not liked for whatever reason and returned, a REI member can pick it up later at a discount. And so now I'll most likely be checking here first to see if they have what I need, and will be looking to take advantage of those REI member Garage sales. read more

My past experiences here at REI have always been positive! Sometimes when my boyfriend and I are in the area, we'll just swing by to take a look and walk around. Other times, we have something particular in mind. Most recently we visited to check out their men's hiking boots. We had scheduled a trip to Yosemite a couple months ago and wanted to get a solid pair of hiking boots for my boyfriend for a long full-day hike. My boyfriend bee-lined for the hiking shoes/boots area while I took my time strolling around the women's clothing. One thing I've always appreciated here is that employees check in on you! They'll pop up and offer a friendly "are you finding everything okay?" or "is there anything I can help you with?" I responded that I was just browsing and the employee let me know that she'd be around if I needed anything. I went to go join my boyfriend where he was looking at a couple options, and the employee who was helping him was really helpful with getting different sizes and offering her insight on which boots would work best for our planned trip. She also encouraged my boyfriend to walk around the store to get a better feel for the styles. At the same time, she was helping a couple other customers, but she made sure to look in our direction to see if we needed anything. YO!! Attention, all skiers who have a boot issue. Shout out to Brooks in the ski shop. So my right foot is about 3 mm wider than my left foot and I have a weird bump on the top of my foot. Awful return experience!! My Hokas tread completely disintegrated in three months of regular use, and when I tried to return it during their "great return policies timeframe" they wouldn't take it because they called it normal wear and tear. What shoe has a lifespan of only 3 months?? No one told me that when I bought them and I think no one would expect that limited timeline of a high-end shoe. But the customer service staff was rude and unhelpful as they didn't accept the return and suggested I simply buy a new pair of HOKAs every few months. Certainly won't be doing that at this store. read more

This place has VIBRAMS. So we tried on a few. I was lucky to find a set that was exact size as my feet in the clearance section. I got a great deal. Normally they run from $80.00+ or over. I got mines in the $50.00+ range because it was in clearance. It was also comfy and fitted just perfectly to my feet. Using these to walk around my gym and do some exercises. It's comfortable and worth it. It feels really good and comfortable. They have a membership system which I did not sign up for. I didnt sign up because I wasnt sure how many times I would walk into REI to buy things. But if you want, you can get that and get a lot of discounts. It's a really nice place to shop and the workers are really nice and helpful. The guy that helped me with my Vibrams gave me lots of options. New Vibrams and he also pointed at the Clearance section. REI, as so many have relayed here, really is an amazing store for everyone from the casual outdoorsman to the serious mountain climbing survivalists. They have an incredible selection of products, including some real quality under their own brand. It's a place you could get lost in and find a lot of inspiration from. Just don't expect to find anything close to a deal here. I've been in so many times over the years just to look around. I love camping, hiking, backpacking and exploring in general. They have everything you'd need, from clothing to shoes to tents to backpacks to canteens to read-to-eat meals to bug spray to customized hiking sticks. The world is your oyster here. I've encountered quite a few helpful staff members as well. The downside, which is really only a downside depending on how much you want to invest in all this, is the price. In a world where everything comes cheaper online, they don't even come close to meeting a good deal. The "Clearance" rack clothing is still in the hundreds. I reluctantly bought a camping chair that was over $100, only knowing it was unique to their brand and something I couldn't find elsewhere. Keep that in mind, but certainly visit for the inspiration and the excitement of planning your outdoor journey. Especially during the time of COVID-19. read more

Contrary to their marketing... Your satisfaction is NOT 100% guaranteed!! Summary: I was incorrectly sized for ski boots by REI and they are unwilling to correct their mistake. Long story: In Nov 2017 I went into my local REI store to buy new ski boots. The associate fitted me with Solomon Xpro 100's. During the fitting I told the associate that I thought the boots were too tight in the toe, he assured me that he knew how to fit boots and that once I started breaking in the boots and when I was in a skiing position they would fit. I skied in Tahoe one day, they were tight but ski-able... and I assumed they would get better as the associate told me. The next tine I went skiing was up in Canada where during the first day my left toe went black and blue. I took the boot to the boot shop at the village and they bumped out my left toe. I skied that week in Canada and a few more times in Tahoe, assuming that the boots were OK now, but apparently, they were not. I just got back from a week in Canada this year and the same thing happened. After the first day my left toe (a new toe nail from losing mine last year) went black and blue. I went into a fitting shop at the village and they told me that my boots were definitely way too small. (My feet- L:274/104, R273/106 where the Salomon 26.5 fits foot 260-269). I proceeded to buy new boots as I couldn't ski with my Solomon's. When I came home I went to the local REI store and they told me that because I bought the boots more than a year ago (1yr + 2months) they would not accept a return. I knew REI is excellent at backing up their products and that is why I shop there (I don't believe that anymore). I had never returned a used item to REI and thus did not know there was a 1 year limitation. I should have returned the item after the first season, but because my toe nail was already dead the boots didn't bother me as much and assumed the issue was fixed with the toe bump out. I feel that this was a foot sizing mistake by the REI associate and would have expected REI to accept this return given their marketing of "Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed". read more

It's REI! I can't go in without buying something. This is a great location with plenty of parking and emery's highway access. Great stuff at this REI. So many amazing products. The store is huge with a massive variety and they always have my sizes. I go for camping and athletic clothing. The store is clean, bright, and pack full of helpful staff. They are super knowledgeable on their products and have great recommendations on products when I am less than ready to select something. They have Garage Sales that show really cool stuff on sale at a really good rebate. Even not on Garage Sale days they have sales items. I like going in on odd weekends as I can usual find something on sale that I like. There are other climbing and athletic programs that the store hosts but I haven't tried them. As a life long REI customer I really do recommend this store for just about anything you need. read more

I love that this REI has a great variety of whatever you could possibly need (and things you didn't know existed) for your sports/outdoor activities. We're planning a summer vacation so we've been perusing the store and trying out shoes, shirts, backpacks, checking out roof racks, etc. There are always sales people around asking if we need help - I love that they're available when we have questions and don't push anything when we're merely looking. Yeah, they're more expensive than other stores but they have a generous 12 month return policy for most items. I'm generally an online shopper but being able to see, touch, and return items with ease makes them worth the visit. And, for REI co-op members-only, you get access to their monthly garage sale where you can buy used gear at heavily-discounted prices! read more

Didn't have the best experience at this particular store. I have a gift certificate from REI that was given to me on my birthday a few years ago, and i've been cleaning out my wallet recently, and wanted to get rid of some older items that have just been hiding in it for years, including my gift certificate for this place. I know REI carries higher end items, but I always feel like I can find the same thing at Target or Costco, usually for a fraction of the price. sun hats for $70? Drink coolers for over $100? It just seemed like a waste of money. But I did happen to find this one particular North Face fleece pullover that looked pretty nice, and was somewhat affordable. Only problem is REI's website showed that it was only available in three colors. None of which were appealing to me. So, I just happened to be in the area recently, and decided that I would pop in and see if they had the pullover in my size and a better color than puke peach. I had just come from the gym, so I was dressed in basic attire that I purchased from Walmart. What can I say? It's cheap, it's decent quality, and I'm sweating in it, anyway. Why buy a woven Nike workout shirt for $50 when I can get a knockoff at Target or Walmart for $8.99? First thing I noticed, when I walked in, was that EVERY other customer in there looked like they regularly shopped there. I think I was the only person there not dressed in something from Colombia, North Face, or the REI brand. So I walk to the back of the store, and I see the fleece pullover style I was, but they just had it in puke peach or basic black. I gotta admit, I was kind of surprised. REI is to bougie outdoor attire what Whole Foods is to groceries. I expected there to be a better selection, especially considering how expensive everything is there. Anyway, my next step is to try and get a hold of an employee, to see if they had another section where they sold fleece pullovers. The setup at the store makes no sense. Want a baseball hat or a long sleeve active wear shirt? You have to check the whole store, because everything is spread out, so you have to go searching for it. So i'm trying to find an employee to help me, and none are available. I spot a middle aged lady with blonde hair who looks available, but she stopped to help some kid, who just happened to be wearing a nice looking Colombia jacket. So I waited patiently, because no one else was available. Finally, they employee became free. I'm about 15 feet away from her, and I wave at her to try and get her attention. She cuts me this dirty-ass snobby look, and power walks right by me. She basically treated me like I was a damn panhandler who was harassing her. Not a good look, on her part. I decided I didn't want to stay there any longer, and just walked out. I might end up using the gift certificate...I may not. However, I won't be coming back in that particular store anymore. Love this Rei!! I started shopping here more than a year ago after finding out they sell Hydroflask's. I signed up for their membership ($20), which has been very rewarding with the dividend they send around March. I have found a lot of Patagonia and North Face products on sale compared to other stores that offer these products for full price year round. My only suggestion is that they expand the parking lot because it can be a struggle to find a parking spot. read more

I had a really uncomfortable interaction at this REI. I came in to do an exchange on a clothing item that we'd gotten for Christmas and was made to feel like I'd stolen it or was doing something fraudulent, even after showing them it was bought at an REI. The "customer service" person was pretty cold and held the item in their hand as if I wasn't going to get it back. You saw a receipt, but you act like it belongs to... you? I'd never had that happen, and I looked around to see if anyone else saw what was happening. Nope. No one. I took the item back and left. Something not my taste, wouldn't fit, and now I have to feel like I'd rather not go back? I'll drive to Roseville and try again. I have shopped here multiple times, I've never experienced anything like this. I had pleasant interactions with people in line prior to getting to the front of the line. I watched people talk with their cashiers, normal interactions. Why was mine so different? If you have experienced racism you know that there's an instantaneous understanding of what was happening. I went back to my car and cried my angry tears on the way home for not saying or doing something, like so many of us have. And here I am, avoiding it and writing a Yelp review about it instead. read more

This review is for the bike shop. I have always taken my mountain bike to REI. It's about 16 years old now but I have a bunch of specialty parts on it, and I love it, so I'd rather bring it for a tune up then buy a new one. I called earlier in the day and spoke to Matt (Matthew) on the phone. I told him that my poor bike had sat unused in my garage for at least a year and also suffered an injury from our aggressive movers. He told me that I should buy an REI membership because I could get a discount on the bike tune up plus sales. When I told him I saw a deal online for a $20 gift card he said that was cool, but if I came in and purchased it that would be better because staff would get credit. After he answered a bunch of my bike questions I hung up and found out I had to spend $100 online for the gift card, so I opted to sign up in store to give him credit. When I arrived I was greeted by multiple bike guys and it was great! All of them were really helpful and they pulled my bike in the back to give me a breakdown of parts and labor. They were really, really specific about each part and all of the labor costs and wrote it all up for me. Their bike mechanic even came out and spent a good 20 minutes going part by part and talking about best and worst case scenarios. The cost was extremely reasonable and I was so happy to have the mechanic and also Matt there to help me through a few "recovery" steps for my poor old bike. After the formalities were done I left her in the back and then Matt helped me out on the sales floor. I wanted to know about the upcoming Member sale and also had a few inquiries about a bike for my husband. Matt gave me a few options and also told me to bring in my husband on a non-rainy day (what is rain?) to have him test drive some new rides. I know REI isn't necessarily local but I've been bringing my bike to them for years and this is my first time in the Sacramento store and I continue to be impressed with their vast knowledge and customer service. Don't be scared with a big box store price tag, these are awesome bikes and to me, a knowledgable, trustworthy staff is so important. I continue to be a loyal customer and their performance today confirmed my feelings! I also teased Matt when he tried to sell me a credit card, I told him he was an excellent salesman. I visited this particular REI this past weekend to get help from the bike shop, I am really glad I did. I was politely greeted asking if I needed help from a nice young lady (forgive I don't remember her name.) I liked her approach because I usually know pretty much what I'm looking for before I go into the store. She recognized once I told her the nature of my visit and she knew right where to bring me. She seamlessly transitioned me over to the counter to speak with a tech. I liked her approach also because I don't usually like to ask for so much help all the time with these "sort of places". I like to feel like I know what I'm doing and I felt totally comfortable asking for as much help or as little as I needed. This is when I met Adam he did not disappoint. I was looking for a replacement grip shifter for my daughter's bike. I realized they typically come in a set after getting more familiar with the online inventory. (I only needed one for her seven speed bike.) I said I knew this and it was fine to buy a pair. "Hang on let me see what I can do". He came from the back in seconds with a box full of singly tagged grip shifters that I could buy brand new individually! I took a look through and this was exactly what I was looking for. I had several choices that all seemed to do just fine from quality brands they carry online. I felt like I was "in the club" with this special "from the back" inventory and their resourcefulness saved me at least $10. I found two I was interested in. Since Adam knew to ask if I was installing it myself, he reminded me of a few details that would have led to a less than ideal selection and most likely having to come back and exchange. His approach was inviting and thoughtfulness was in mind the entire time. He went into the back to cut me some sweet lime green housing for next to nothing in cost with a nice clean cut that looks awesome on her set up. "Here you're going to want these as well I think"... I almost forgot! (he included multiple ends for the housing(s) and crimps for the cut cabling instead of me forgetting and having to come back.) Nice work. Furthermore: All the while (was there for less than 5 minutes in and out they're really fast) everyone I saw in the shop or near by greeted me as well as making sure I was taken care of with the aforementioned inviting approach. I could tell all of these associates were gracious enthusiasts. Noteworthy: Shops in the area that morning and the days prior had tried to simply sell me a new bike for her. Questioning how "it must not even fit her anymore considering the grip shifter wore out"... hmmmmmm A bit of back story: I picked up this bike as a hand-me-down from a family member who's older daughter had outgrown, and a big part of its allure was to truly fix it up for my daughter. The bike was in great shape and I gave it a lot of love however knowing it's going to need a shifter soon because they do get a fair amount of abuse from a young rider. It was time to replace and I should've come to REI first. In closing: I trust REI and their bike shop. I know Adam could tell it was a somewhat special project and that I wanted to do the work myself, and be involved as much as possible in the venture. My daughter who's 6 y/o, even helped put it together on her bike with me. The job wasn't just easy because it was easy it went smoothly because we had everything we needed; because HE KNEW everything we needed. (Even if I thought I knew too haha) Thank you Adam. You should've seen the smile on her face from those crisp clicks of her brand new $15 grip shifter. It can really be the littlest things. Hang on. Here's a picture! And it is one of the only activities that you can do without any practice and still pull it off? Well I told my (at the time) boyfriend that I liked hiking. And camping. The selection in this store (and online) is huge. You walk in and it is like a toy store for adults - cute activity clothes and gear for days! And the membership thing is LEGIT! I just used my reward from last year to buy some cute new down vests (for hiking of course). And with their return policy you dont need to worry about buying something and getting stuck with it. They let you try out all the chairs they have. People at the shoe section are almost always busy but waiting to get helped out doesn't take too long. Despite whatever shortcomings REI has, you've got to love their return policy. While I've never abused the privilege like some others I've heard of (buying a cart full of gear for the weekend trip, with no intention of keeping it), I have to say that it's a huge advantage to have when your -whatever- self destructs after 30 or 60 or 90 days (normal return times for most stores). When I buy outdoor gear, especially the expensive brand name stuff, I expect it to last a long time. When it doesn't, or if it doesn't perform up to my standards in the field, it goes right back to the store. When all the hooha came about over bpa in the water bottles, I was one of the wussies waiting in line at REI to get a refund. When asked what was wrong with it I said it was turning me into a hermaphrodite. Not even a chuckle from the register dude, but I'm sure he's bound by some corporate non-harassment clause. The most amazing customer service I ever received was when I returned a pair of Mountain Hardwear shorts with a blown-out crotch. I swear I bought the shorts there six months earlier, but I had no receipt, the purchase didn't show up under my member account, and the store's stock history showed they never even stocked that item (which basically means I made a boo boo). I was ready to walk out of there feeling stupid, convinced I had made a mistake, when the cashier gave me a store credit, based on the average price she found on the internet! I was floored, especially since the store credit was for an amount I know I wouldn't have ever paid for a pair of shorts. Kudos to REI! read more

I like REI and the store and most of their staff. However, I was disappointed with the treatment I received from my cashier Devyn yesterday. Devyn called next in line. I walked up and Devyn didn't say Hi, just started ringing me up. She gave me my receipt, did not put my clothes in the bag. I asked about the $20 gift card I should get for spending over $100. She said nothing to me, took my receipt, took out a gift card scanned it and handed all to me without an apology, without bagging my clothes or handing me my bag. Back in Minnesota, whether it was for wilderness camping and canoeing, or for my daughters extensive travels in Europe, REI was the place I went to find good quality products, and knowledgeable, helpful staff. I only just came to the REI in Sacramento and it was as expected: pleasant and helpful staff, in a beautiful store, full of all manner of clothing and equipment for outdoor recreation. They have bikes, and tents, and sail boards, and climbing gear, and much more. The prices are high, but I considered it worthwhile to invest in pieces that would be used for years to come. They are easy to get to, located in a nice shopping area that is just off Exposition Boulevard between I 80 and Hwy 160, with their own parking lot. read more

This place is huge & stocked. I wish the Northridge location was this big. They have everything here. Still pricey like all REIs but " it is what it is" ;). Can't wait to drop in here again. read more

I was excited to come to the store because of shopping on the REI website. I was extremely satisfied with all the products they had in the store. I was expecting great service but I didn't experience that when I came into the store. I asked an employee to help me find an item and instead of looking up the item to see if the store had it or even took a look in the clothing area she just told me no the store doesn't have it and she's never seen it in the store. I explained that the website said the item was able to be purchase in the store but she kept telling me I was wrong. I decided to take a look on my own and ended up finding the item. I enjoy shopping at REI because of their high quality stocked items and seasonal selection. Does quality come at a price? Always. You might be able to find lower cost items elsewhere on the web but I like comparing several items readily and willing to pay the small price for that convenience. I've dropped by here for winter clothes, summer hiking gear, camping, and sports. My purchased goods from REI last for many years proving that my investments are well worth it. I dropped one star because they are sometimes understaffed or have newbies that don't know their merchandise. I will come back often. read more
