Yea!!! I have membership here! This place is next to Any Mountains so its a bit hard to rate it since its pretty much neck in neck and competitive. I definitely get my special order stuff from here. They have a HUGE selection of gear and what not. I got my gf her Option Bella which was pretty hard to find anywhere else as its not as "popular" as Burton [LAME! ye that's right I don't like em got a problem w/ that =p haha] The staff is incredibly friendly and extremely informative. They definitely know their stuff. When I got my gf's board from the store I was totally psyched! The board felt SO nice and light ooh yea baby! I went to get the bindings attached to the board and found out that they don't service your board anymore [that kinda annoyed me as that was part of the reason I bought the membership for] but the kind girl did it anyways. Oh and if you are a membership you get 10% refund at the end of the year on everything you bought. It only works on originally priced products, but its worth it because they give you special services and discounts. I wished they priced match like Any Mountain though. Its good to get the stuff when they are on sale ^^V which they tend to be. Here's a good Tip: If you REALLY want cheap snow gear stuff such as snowboards, bindings, boots and etc. Go to their online website around late January- late March. [The best time would probably be February when things really go on sale and theres plenty of stuff]. That's when the snow stuff start going on sale like CRAZY!. The boards are more than 50% off. An example would be the Option Bella snowboard I got my gf which was near 500 now its only 229$. A Salomon Ivy board originally costs 469$ it becomes 219$. When stuff go on sale they REALLY GO ON SALE! UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was visiting to buy their on-sale items for snowboarding because it's almost the end of the official snow season. I get there and they said everything was gone a long time ago. WTFREAK?! It seems like every time I go there to buy something, they do NOT have it! I have limited experience at this particular REI location but it's been consistently and abnormally poor. The staff has been unhelpful, bouncing me around from person to person, telling me to come back another time since they're too busy, etc. I've had to make 3 separate trips to the store just to get the snowboard boots I bought here heat molded properly. An associate named Brian has been particularly uncaring and dismissive. I'll go to other locations whenever possible going forward and would advise others to do likewise. read more

Recently my SO and I just got more into hiking to stay active throughout this pandemic. Let me be honest with you, I've never hiked with poles! But because of some difficulties (due to my hammertoe), I finally came to a point in which I thought they would extremely helpful to aid my stability. The first thing that caught my eye was the Leki Cressida Cor-Tek Trekking Poles because of how lightweight it was and how comfortable the cork grip felt around my hand. I noticed one of the staff members Jeremy was demoing and providing info to this old couple-- I then knew I wanted this guy to help me so while waiting, I walked around the store til I noticed he was done. After a few minutes of waiting, I finally got a hold of Jeremy! He was able to walk me through how to properly use the trekking poles & how to adjust it to my height. And of course lastly put me to the test before I made my purchase! You could tell that Jeremy genuinely cares about his customers. Overall I had a great time getting the proper guidance/info and loved the fact that there wasn't one moment I felt like he was pressuring me in buying a more expensive item but rather let me choose what felt right for me. Literally had a vibe as if he was like family! Throughout my visit yesterday he helped me the most and is a great example of what excellent customer service looks like. Sadly, everyone else kind of seemed ignorant in helping me with questions about other hiking essentials. In conclusion, if you ever come to this location & want A1 service-- make sure you ask for Jeremy. I promise you'll be in the best hands. read more

This review is for their ski shop. I brought my skis in on a Friday for a hot wax and tune, was helped immediately by a woman who obviously knows about skis, paid about $40, and was told the skis would be ready in about 3 days, which is a good turn time at this time of year. Received a call less than 24 hours later that my skis were ready. Work was well done. Definitely recommend their ski shop. read more

I've been an REI shopper for soooooo many years and they have consistently delivered excellent products and amazing customer service. I used to travel all the way to Berkeley, before they opened up in the South Bay, and it worth the trek. Not only is the in-store staff helpful, but they are deeply knowledgable. In most cases, they are campers, bikers, surfers, runners or whatever who use the gear they sell and know it very well. OK, it's not a place to go for bargains but if you want great apparel and gear for your active hobby, this is the place. And has been, for decades and decades. read more

Outdoors person paradise, you get everything! My boyfriend is a member, so we go very often and check what is on sale (as we want to get everything). All your camping, hiking, kayaking, etc gear is here, or they will redirect you to another store they might have what they got run out of. Also I find they offer free and paying classes of various activities, such as preparation to hike some challenging mountains to how to fix your bike. I didn't realize REI does bike repairs and service. I'd been driving to a smaller bike shop farther away for my bike needs but they have limited hours. So surprised and delighted by our experience at REI. The guy helped my 5-year-old boy, gave him tips on caring for the bike, and shared his passion for biking. Terrible return policy. I spoke to Arnold from Big Basin about a Mammut gore tex jacket where the shell is bubbling off the gore tex and he basically said although we are a authorized dealer we can't help you even if you pursed it at REI. We shop in this store regularly. More often than not the product assortment is great, and the service can be mediocre to great. One of the great moments was yesterday. The store was very busy due to their anniversary sale. Big kudos to Willam, who helped my husband and I select a bike rack. I worked in retailing and know how hard it is to spend quality time answering questions when the store is busy. I didn't buy anything on my most recent trip here, but one of the associates who helped me in the rock climbing section was SUPER great about answering my questions on the fit/sizing for a climbing harness. Also, parking here is great - plentiful and the spaces are not too narrow or short. I loved my experience at this REI! I was looking for a pair of hiking shoes and didn't know the first thing. I did a ten day hiking trip as part of a research thesis that involved eight hours a day of off-trail hiking. I was also leaving in a few days, and wouldn't get a chance to break them in. The person who helped me, Stephen, was prompt and helpful and had no problem pulling out boxes and boxes of shoes for me to try. He helped me stay in budget and helped me find a pair of shoes and a few sock brands that not only lasted my entire trip, but didn't give me one blister! Never order online and have item shipped to store. I shopped for hours and finally found a bike to get. I am currently living in LA temporary and in my home location there's no REI. So upon shopping I knew I would be up in there bay area for Christmas so instead of having it shipped to LA I had it shipped to a store up there. It said will be ready for pick up on Dec 23 a whole week after buying the item. It is now Dec 24 and no item has arrived and now I need to go back home a good 6+ hours away with no bike. CALLED the store and they said wait for the item to come in and cancel and reorder it and have it shipped closer (LA). I can't say enough about Audrey F. and Rachel F's customer service. My old boots died last year and I have been trying to get comfortable boots for an expedition and went through 4 different boots in the past year that ended up not to fit properly. After a frustrating whole year of no success, I made a last ditch effort and showed up at REI only 1 week before my trip was to start this past July. THANK goodness for Audrey and Rachel. Audrey, though very busy at the time I came in, managed to help me think outside the box (no pun intended) to try men's sizes, different insoles, much larger sizes than I thought, narrower than I thought (I was originally told to try wider sizes due to toes pinching on outside.) She never stopped working and - don't ask me how she did this - but helped everyone with a smile. And then after we'd tried almost every boot in the whole store, Rachel suggested yet another kind of boot, and who would have guessed - men's + 2 sizes too big for me - was the keeper. I'm happy to report that I had not 1 blister and my feet sailed through the expedition without problems. I could've been miserable during 2 strenuous weeks of backpacking. I went in for hiking shoes and socks and got schooled in the best way on how to tie my hiking boots to fit my foot, and how to adjust. You'd think this would be simple -anyone can tie their shoes! .and while that's true, REI wants you to know how to best care for yourself when you're out in the wild. Vashti and Quintin (sp?) were incredibly dedicated and helpful to getting me to the right shoe, and then to ensuring I felt comfortable with the shoe tie that was best for my foot - now and after 10 miles. I do recommend if you're new to hiking shoes, go to the store at a less busy time if you're able, and you'll get very personal attention, until you find what works best for you. Side note - I also personally love that REI does their annual "opt outside" campaign which is essentially a "Black Friday" sale for 10 days before Thanksgiving, so that the store can be closed to allow its employees to enjoy it with their families/friends. read more

I went to REI on Sunday to buy a pair of hiking shoes. I found some I liked, and a clerk came and asked about the size, and said he would get them. Instead he went and served another customer nearby. After a while I got impatient and asked another clerk to get me my size. She said she would but never came back. After a minutes or so the original clerk finally came back. I ended up waiting 10 -15 minutes because another customer was more important than me. read more

Seriously, if you weren't aware, this is probably the best outdoor store around. I have gone here for several different needs...camping, mountain climbing, hiking, snowboarding...you name it. I wouldn't usually write a review about such a cookie cutter department-like store because if you know anything about REI, you probably know all the main things. But I wanted to point out a few main things because my last visit here was JUST that memorable. 1.) This store has a great return policy. Its one of the best I've heard of (next to Coscto's "No questions asked" return policy) 2.) Though it may not be the absolute BEST on the market (according to bourgeouis sporting good gurus) it has the best VALUE items and a wide variety of pretty much all outdoor needs. The convenience and selection is impeccable. 3.) The customer service at this particular branch is unlike any I've ever seen. I want to give a special shout out to BRUCE in the footwear section for being so attentive and personal. He helped me pick boots, get arch support, and gave me all the tips I needed to know about proper foot/knee/back care for hiking. I learned so much... I hiked half dome Friday night and was infinitely better than I would have been had I not gotten so much help picking out the perfect hiking boot (my old ones were crap) Thanks Bruce! read more

Disappointed in the selection and customer service at REI in general. They appear to sell primarily brands that deliver profits (i.e, fad brands and over-marketed brands) vs. offering high quality products at fair and reasonable prices. It is no longer the co-op environment that many of us grew up with. Now it seems to be lots of mediocre stuff and athletic attire at high prices. And the salespeople are just that - sales. They're just pushing whatever is on the shelf, not looking for the very best solution for their customer. Nor do they often have very good advice in my opinion. I think that you could do a lot better at a local store that understands and appreciates the community that it's in. Sadly, this used to be REI but it doesn't feel that way to me any longer. read more

Wow... Service has gone way downhill! I've shopped here for years but it seems their customer service is going the way most big box store tend to go... They are starting to follow the Home Depot style of customer service where they have everything in stock except employees who want to help. Waited for over a half hour for assistance meanwhile there's three staff members just sitting around jaw jacking. A female staff member was sitting down on a rolling display talking to other employees and after I asked for help they suddenly had other things to do and said someone else would help me... No one came I walked out. Try Mel cottons instead, not as cheap as these big corporate stores like REI but @ least Mel cottons is helpful andlocally owned and I'd rather support that than the lazy customer service @ REI San Jose. read more

I walked in and the greeters first thing to me was, "Is that a return? Returns are to be returned at the customer service area". I was carrying a reusable bag! Wtf! ... And when I left the greeter didn't say anything. She was on her phone. Like the greeters job is to be kind, helpful, & nice! Oh AND greet people!!! I came in here looking for socks. I went to the sock area by the shoe area. I hear people talking in the back & one eventually came out & I asked if she could help but she said the shoe department wasn't hers & she walked away. 15 minutes later still no one helped me. One associate got a pair of shoes for someone & said he would help me once he dropped it off for the customer. The customer wanted another pair of shoes & the associate brought it to him. Again, the customer wanted ANOTHER pair of shoes & the associate went to the back and got him another. I just had ONE question about socks & was willing to buy some pairs for a trip but no one was there to help. So I left. And will never be back. read more

I have a major love/hate relationship with this store. I LOVE everything they sell, i HATE that things are so expensive. The way i look at it though, is that if you are out in the middle of nowhere, you don't want to have to worry about wether your gear is going to work like it is supposed to. This is the only place that we are going to register at for our wedding. hee hee. I love backpack camping, and this is the only place that i will shop when i am serious about getting my gear. They really have it all. Your best bet is to become a member and wait until you get your annual discount coupons and then make your big purchase...i believe it's usually 10-20% any regular priced item, which could end up being a LOT of money in savings depending on what you are purchasing. If you're serious about backpacking, you really shouldn't go any other place. Save yourself the trip and just come here first to see what they have. You will find stuff here that you may have never even thought of! read more

I was in the market for a "barefoot" shoe, like the Vibram Five Fingers, but could not get anyone to help me... the running shoe department already had three very bored and unhappy looking customers who were waiting. This was not a good sign. Eventually, I got bored and left. I circumnavigated the periphery of the store three times, browsing, and discovered I was invisible! I've dealt with their customer service, with their return policy, with their rental department.. it is absolutely fantastic. The workers here are very knowledgeable about their products and how to talk to customers the right way. I had the great opportunity to speak with a worker here named "Emma", she was very helpful and extremely awesome. I have a backpacking trip at the end of this month, so I came in to do research on items I would need to buy, and here comes Emma who helped me out immensely... workers here are DA BOMB. I've been an REI member for over 15yrs. Today I walked into this location and within 5 feet of walking in the store I was told that my golden retriever was not welcome in the store because they only allow service dogs. No reason was given, not one. I was told I could either tie him up outside or leave him in my car. Being in California where it's been hot on a regular basis leaving him in the car was not an option and I just don't feel comfortable leaving him tied up outside. I was more shocked that a company like REI wouldn't allow a dog inside. This is a company that sells backpacking equipment for dogs. They have pictures in catalogs of dogs on backpacking trips displaying the equipment, but they aren't welcome in the store. Well REI your not welcome to take my money anymore. I can buy the same equipment in many other stores that will allow my dog inside. An example was the "Any Mountain" a block away. I was happy to give them my money today and in the future because they know what customer service is and they welcomed me and my dog. Wake up REI your ego has gotten way to inflated in a world that where people can buy on the internet and have many other locations to buy outdoor equipment. read more

However, tonight when one of your employees gives me incorrect direction to REI Mountain View (so I can find an item currently not in this Paseo franchise), insisting I take 880, argues with me and walks away repeatedly saying to me that 880 runs through Mtn View and shuffles off saying "he lives there and he doesn't want to fight" me over this, I would say to this to the management of this store: at the very least, there's a customer service politeness issue over something trivial (I guess "customers are always right" policy don't apply anymore, even if h/she is right) and at worst case you have yourself an employee issue. Dude, you know who you are. I'm sure there's an app on iPhone somewhere that you can download with instructions on how to interact with people. Why don't u start where 17 turns into 880 on 101 and drive north. And you know how you know your in Mountain View? It's when you see all the "Welcome to Oakland" signs.
