I love coming to this store!! Everyone here is extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. The store overall is clean, organized, and well-staffed. They carry everything you need when it comes to the outdoors. Expect to pay a pretty penny for their merchandise but everything they sell is pretty much top of the line. I come here for all my camping gear, and after a few years of camping I have collected everything I need. Now, I just come back to upgrade my gear and look for the newest cool gadget. You'd be surprised on how innovative some of the gear is. Anyhow you can't go wrong with REI's products. read more

Over priced and under performance. I bought a bike online and had it delivered to the store so they could put it together. What a mistake. I was not able to test it due to situations at the time. Now I have had two close catastrophes with it. Brakes not adjusted correctly and would not stop the bike on a hill. So I adjusted the brakes. Then, the handlebars were not correctly tightened and rotated while braking downhill on the hoods. nearly went over the handlebars. I guess I need to assume the bike was put together by someone totally inept and need to adjust everything myself. I also asked about a HR monitor I was having problems with and was told to bring it it. Once in, I was told to go home and troubleshoot on my own. there was nothing they can do. The guy on the phone did give some good advice. "buy a wahoo tickr" which has been perfect. too bad i spent money at rei. To be fair I called in to the HQ and received a gift card for a portion of the cost. read more

This location is definitely my favorite one. With the tall ceiling and wood interior, it makes me feel like an explorer in nature already. I came here because I wanted to get some advice for some warm clothing for my upcoming roadtrip, camping up in Oregon and Washington. I think the guys name was Zach or maybe Seth? Either way, blond and very long hair. He really went into detail and explained all the layering of clothes and what I should and should not buy. One ski boot fitter and 2 cashiers on mid day Saturday is unacceptable. Took me one and half hours of wait for the ski boot fitter just to be told they don't have the size I need and 20min wait at the cashier line. REI Tustin needs to do better. read more

Don't waste your time coming here. Came here on two different days to get some last minute items for our Yosemite trip. Any questions we asked, no one could give us anything informative that could save our life. Checking out at the register, customer service was lacking. Does everyone just try to get their day over with and make a sale here and there? Go to REI in Rancho Cucamonga. The staff there is soooo educated on outdoor gear and adventures. There is someone there for everything. Backpacking, boots, hiking, camping, etc. I won't ever waste a drive coming to the Tustin store again. read more

I used to buy all of my pants at REI, but lately, they are cheapening them to cut costs. I just bought a new pair of Sahara Convertible pants and they used to come with 4-zipper pockets. This was great for traveling overseas which I do a lot, which prevented pick-pockets from gaining access. Now they only put zippers on 2 of the pockets, and not on the pocket I keep my money in which is very unfortunate. REI used to sell a lot of clothing and other supplies for overseas travel but now it seems that they are focusing their products on only hiking in the outdoors. Also, the last pair I had ended up with a burn hole in it due to a spark from a fire. They used to be more fire-resistant, but now apparently they are changing their fabric. I will be looking at REI for my pant purchases from now on. read more

FIRST TIME=FOREVER CUSTOMER First time at this location. ITS HUGE! (That's what she said...hopefully) Came in for a new duffel bag, yoga mat, bike shorts with the butt pad, and wireless gym headphones. I was not disappointed. ROBYN helped me out a ton, walking around the store as I asked a bunch of questions. When interrupted by another customer she paged another helper so we would both be taken care of. THUMBS UP ROBYN :) EDD, now what can I say about this guy. Well, he's funny and knowledgable. I was checked out by SAMMI and she got me all jazzed up about the membership card. It's only $20 bucks and you're a member for life! With what I was spend it basically paid for itself. I suggest everyone go online and check out the benefits. There's a 1 year warranty on all items with or without the original packaging. Plus they host a "garage sale" of returned items that cannot be sold on the sales floor so they're marked down 50%-80%!!! This is truly a "toy store" for "big kids". You can get "lost" in this place for hours checking it out. The selection of outdoor and travel gear is amazing. They carry all the major and popular brands of middle to high end gear. Don't expect things to be cheap here. However they do have a section where they offer pre-owned items that are resold in excellent condition for half price or more. If I am looking for some outdoor or travel stuff I will be coming back here for sure. read more

This review is not for the store but the employee, Jacqueline who was a total B**** on the counter. I bought a winter jacket today and she gives me a card for 20 dollars off for my next purchase. I would have been happy about it but she seemed very annoyed that I was using my husband's membership to purchase. She had to tell me 3 times that the 20 dollars off can only be used once and can only be given once. All three times I said OK. I wonder if she had a hard time hearing me or understanding the word OK? If you're reading this, Jacqueline, I want you to know that I understood you the first time. After paying for the jacket, she prints out a receipt and gives it to me along with the jacket. I asked for a bag and she said they don't give bags anymore unless the customer asks for one. This seemed to annoy her even more. She annoyingly grabs a bag and proceeded to tell me that "we're trying to limit human consumption." I'm guessing she was referring to the bag. The lady next to me was also making a purchase but she was given a bag. The very nice young man behind the counter politely asked her if she wanted one. I've purchased a few items this past December and all 3 times I got asked if I would like a bag. Jacqueline, I get that you're having a bad day, but don't take it out on me. I stopped by here to do some Christmas shopping a few days before Christmas. This REI is located in the Tustin Marketplace so driving in was a breeze because they had clear signs that said where REI was at exactly. Parking here wasn't all that bad either. First off, I love looking at all the different outdoor gear REI has. I was on a mission to look for a red hydro flask and possibly a light Omni heat jacket. Most of the hydro flasks were already sold out and there were many bright colors left over. I was able to find a black hydro flask but at smaller size to gift away. Now I was unable to find a jacket that fit the style and need that I wanted it for. Then when I thought I found one it was well over $200. So I was really disappointed with that. I decided to browse around and even though it was a few days before Christmas, this store was very well maintained and organized. The lines at the register were long, but they went by quickly. The service at the register was friendly and quick then I was on my way. read more

A grown folks toy store. Awesome gear and great service! I went in for some Merrell hiking shoes and Tyler helped me out. Very knowledgeable, helpful, and patient. I ended up with some Merrell Moab II's which were great, except the color wasn't quite what I expected when I saw them in daylight. I went back a couple days later and Tyler recognized me right away. I told him I was there for an exchange and he gladly helped me pick a replacement. I ended up with some Keens with Tyler's help. I'm kind of picky so I give Tyler a lot of credit for his patience and great attitude. I've been to other shoe stores and have sometimes felt like I was burdening the sales associates. Not here. Good vibes only! That said, if you need some outdoor gear, be sure to check out REI. If you need shoes or boots, the shoe department is top notch. Everyone here is always super helpful. If one person does not know something, they will actually find the right person for you who does. They will let you know if they themselves have or have not used the products and the pros and cons. Obviously when they are busier you get slightly less info, but even during busy times they do the best to get you what you need, not just as much as they can sell you. I appreciate that the store is always clean and well organized even during big sales and I can find what I am looking for without too much trouble, if any. read more

REI has become one of my favorite places. About a month ago, I made my first REI purchase here. I was appalled by how much it cost... But at the same time, I had no regrets. Partly because their return policy (or lack thereof?) is amazing. And because everyone there is extremely helpful and friendly. And because it's such a fun place to peruse! I'm not a backpacker or anything by any means. I run, hike, and occasionally camp. But I can see how this place can be every outdoorsy person's dream come true. Went in today just to look at smart watches with my buddy. The workers kept having "things to do" right next to me, glancing over every so often, no words exchanged, not asking if I needed help. It was obvious they weren't actually doing anything. A guy in the bike area did a double take on me and proceeded to radio in that there was someone to "keep an eye on". Blatant racism and stereotyping. I suppose I should have expected that due to the clientele in this area, I don't necessarily blend in. I was considering buying something, but after they followed me around the store I didn't want to spend my money there and support the store. POC's beware. read more

Good ol' REI. Full of expensive gear, and pretentious hipsters who want to look like they've gone outside before, at least in my area. Despite this, this is one of the most enjoyable locations I've been to. It is large and well stocked, and the employees are all very helpful, and I haven't had any problems with employees balking at the level of questions asked. I would drop a star or three if I were rating their clientele, but that's not the application of Yelp, so we will stick with 5's. If you're at all serious about the outdoors, try to avoid this location at peak shopping hours. South Orange County is full of quarter mile fire road hikers and people who want to wear the most expensive work out gear to Whole Foods. Pretentious, uppity folks about. Have fun! read more

I've been to this REI about four times over the last few weeks and have been consistently impressed with every facet of it. The customer service is exceptional and this staff is incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. I rented crampons for hiking and the guy who helped me was excellent explaining the difference between snowshoes and crampons. It's always helpful when people can add in their own personal experiences to help you relate and understand what you may know nothing about. I came back here yesterday and spent about an hour looking at GPS watches for running. Tom was incredibly helpful and was friendly and patient as I asked a number of questions and tested watches. When another customer came up, he quickly found someone to help them so he could continue working with me. I returned today and purchased a watch after more questions and information from Michelle. I can't say enough about the staff at this store and it makes me happy to be an REI member. read more

If you want to go camping, rock climbing, or hiking, and you need the gear for it, there are few places as well stocked or as knowledgeable as REI. Sure, they also sell other stuff, for snow sports, cycling, paddling..., and the options are good there, but there are other, better stores to outfit yourself for these pursuits. For the feet on the ground adventures, however, you need look no further than REI. My last purchase was a pair of climbing shoes for my daughter, and we tried on at least six styles in her size in stock as well as looked at a rental pair for her to use. I picked up two extra slings and 'beeners because I was there. Get a membership if you are at all active, you get discounts throughout the year and a rebate check on full price purchases, and make sure you ask for help. The folks who work here use the gear and get outside and do the same things you want to do. read more

My favorite REI as it's bigger. Which means more on sale racks too. I like Life is Good stuff, and while at the other stores they only have a little shelf-ful, here they have more products and even some on sale! The staff is really knowledgeable and friendly. I am totally a city girl, but my boyfriend has been a REI member for years, mostly ordering online as we don't live anywhere close to a real store. So he gets pretty excited to find so many REI stores in So Cal when we visit, and use the Yelp map to hit all the REI stores within driving distance! So, this is a city girl's take on REI: REI is kind of like the Whole Foods of outdoors stuff. Pricey, excellent service, knowledgeable staff, and social conscious. Yes, my top is made in Nepal too, like yours from Walmart. But mine is from a company owned by Sherpas and part of the proceeds go to educate the children there. Yup, that totally justify me paying double the price... Kidding aside, their stuff do focus on quality. Check out the stitches etc and you'll appreciate the difference. And if you are, unlike me, really outdoorsy, you know that those little small details in the gear makes a difference. Getting the good stuff, designed by people who understand and use the products, makes it more enjoyable even out in the elements, and makes you perform better at the sport you're in. They have a lot of fancy gadgets that I didn't even know exist. Cute kitchen tools, even wine glasses to bring along on a camp! Now that's fun. But... Tick removers? Bear bells? Seriously, won't you just rather stay home? Yup, my boyfriend manages to turn this city girl into a REI fan!! read more

I haven't been in REI for years, never been to this store... killing time between commitments and I am so glad I came in here. I love coming to this place, the staff makes me think of living in Colorado. Today I ran into Scott, he was soooo flippn helpful. This does not happen often at most places I visit here in California. I came here to look for new ear buds, apparently all the cheap crappy ones I always buy die because they aren't sweat proof. I asked for assistance to find the ear buds since they seemed to move the store around for the seasons. One guy was kind enough to take me to the ear buds. I then ran into Scott, who was very friendly and helpful. I knew I wanted YURBUDS because every time I go to a marathon exhibit they advertise and I always feel like kicking myself for not buying a pair lol. Anyways if you're familiar with them, they have five or six different kinds. He was willing to stay there and explain the differences and give me his advise and tell me why I should get the ones I picked. Just absolute awesome service. Our go to for outdoor adventure supplies. Always friendly and approachable staff (at both Tustin and HB location). Store well organized and it's fun to shop around. Went today to prepare for our upcoming hike. Large variety of tasty looking dehydrated camping type meals to choose from (spaghetti & meatballs, fettuccini Alfredo with chicken, pad Thai & bimibap). Our family just had a wonderful shopping experience at the shoe department at REI. Looking for hiking boots for our Alaska trip and found 3 pairs nicely fit hiking boots with help from sales associate Kat! Kat is very knowledgeable and so very patient. The shoe department was super busy Sunday afternoon with many customers trying to buy shoes for summer outdoor activities. Kat was so pleasant even when she had to help multiple customers at same time. Seeing her walking out from the back of the shoe department with 5 big boxes of shoes in hands for different customers at one time, it made me feel that customer service like this needs to be recognized. This is the worst REI I've been to, and I've been to a lot of REIs across the entire west coast. As a field biologist, I get most of my field attire from REI and specifically this REI, because our office is based in Irvine. First off, most of the women's inventory is trash. If you want a quality product you'll have to hope something from the men's section fits. Women's inventory here is meant to be cute and not functional (e.g. ridiculous colors, tiny/no pockets, poor quality/fit). Second, several of the employees at this location are racist/sexist/lazy, or some combination thereof. Every time I've needed help at this store, there are no associates to be found or are unavailable to help. Th shoe department is especially egregious. Everytime I go, I've either been ignored or been assisted by rude employees. Today was the last straw when an employee ignored me several times, speaking only to my husband, then when I finally got his attention, he proceeded to tell me that I couldn't have a shoe because it was for men, even though I have several sets of that specific Asolo boot at home that I've resoled many times because I hate coming to this REI. I'm upset and disappointed because REI used to be great. read more

The REI shoe expert told us that they should expect a larger shipment of these in March. I can't wait to try them. I am not a super outdoorsy active type, but I am married to one so we make a visit to REI every few months. He snowboarded twice already this season...and REI had a sale on 'gently used' snowboard and ski items! I found really awesome snowboard boots that were my size for only $40! Usually, I am only listening to my hubby talk to the REI guys, but they all seem very knowledgeable about their products.
