This place is awesome. I originally had a broken clutch and it happened to break down close to Serramonte Honda. I wasn't happy but at least I can get it fixed, right. Wrong! First off, Serramonte Honda wanted to charge me an arm and a leg to fix. I didn't want to get ripped off by them! I said, "hell no" that is more than my car is worth! It's a 98 accord. I worked on my own cars in the past, but never had to replace a clutch. However I couldn't accept what Serramonte Honda wanted to charge me. I ended up towing my car to Reliance Auto on Mission from a friend's recommendation. I was hesitant at first because I always trusted Honda dealership for the OEM parts and I didn't want generic parts. Once I got to Reliance, it was really late and past their closing time but they waited for me to arrive. They even gave me a ride home and picked me up when the car was done the following day. Now, I don't know whether that was their standard service but they certainly went out of their way to take care of me. I ended up getting my clutch replaced at a reasonable price. He showed me the broken parts and explained that he used the exact same parts the dealership would have used, straight from Honda. They also replaced a broken engine mount at the same time since they had to pull the engine out anyways. I was wondering what was causing that noise... Reliance Auto is the real deal. I'm wary of going to mechanics and I put in extensive research into all the smog centers in the SF/Daly City/Berkeley area. With an SF Advertiser Coupon, you can get a smog test and certificate for $32 (cash only). There is only one other place with comparable prices and that is in Daly City for $30. Since this place has so many good reviews, I decided to go ahead with Reliance Auto. I was not disappointed. Alex, the employee, was able to service me immediately on a Tuesday morning ~10am. He was courteous and professional. The entire smog test took about 10 minutes and he provided me with an invoice/certificate immediately - It took me longer to order a Bahn Mi after my smog test than to wait for Reliance Auto to finish. I highly recommend coming here for your smog tests from here - I can't believe people pay $70 for the same thing! I will definitely return - Alex was fantastic. read more

My first visit to this place was around 2004. My second visit to this place was last month. Read on to find out why. Alex is still the owner. He is a great guy! Very honest. In 2004, I had a 12 year old beater that failed smog. It had the check engine light on and it indicates the rear oxygen sensor. So I replaced the oxygen sensor myself. I learned about Reliance since they were the cheapest in the Advertiser. I got there right before closing and Alex said I am his last car to smog. I gave Alex my DMV paper work as well as my previous failed report from another place and told him I replaced the oxygen sensor. He proceeded with the test and informed me it failed by a very small margin. I asked him if he knows what the cause may be and how much it would cost to fix it. He said he'll take a look at it and ask me if I have time to stick around (keep in mind this is closing time and I was there with my pregnant wife). I told him I got time if he's got time, I got time :) He started working on my car immediately. He worked on it for about 40 minutes and spent another 20 minutes re-smogging the car. It passed! I thanked him and asked for the bill. He said to just pay him what he originally quoted (which was just for 1 smog check and it was like $35 or something). Are you KIDDING me????? You want to charge me NOTHING for an hour of work including a retest?????? All that for FREE????? And you get to go home an hour late??? I don't know if he was a great guy and trying to help out a pregnant young couple with a beater car or he was just crazy about cars and couldn't stop working on them. I am convinced it must be both! As he was finishing up the paper work, I argued with him that he must charge me for the work he put in. I was extremely grateful for what he did and I want to show my appreciation. I offered him $20 to buy him coffee and he refused. After arguing and insisting for 5 minutes, he finally accepted my $20. He probably just got tired arguing with me. Shortly after that, we purchased a brand new vehicle and got rid of the beater as we wanted a new safe car for the baby. We have never needed repairs for the new car as it has been reliable. Otherwise, Alex will be my go to guy. Fast forward 6 years (to last month), my new car needed its first smog check. So I naturally went back to him. He's the same great guy. This shop is probably good for smog check and minor repairs. But that's about it! It's probably my fault from the get go since I relied on the review here on Yelp. First, I brought in my car for a diagnose. A guy named Alex had asked for a key and I expected some kind of paperwork stating that they've received my car and what they were going to do. But, he only asked what was wrong with the car and for my number. This should have been the sign to not leave my car and go some where else. After 6 days and only after I went there the day before to asked what was wrong with my car is when they called me. Alex told me over the phone that I needed a new head gasket replaced since it's showing that I have coolant in my oil. He said they'll also replace the water pump and radiator. I can understand the water pump ,since it's inside the engine, but there's nothing wrong with my radiator. Plus, the service garage I get my oil change regularly every 3000 miles should have already told me I have coolant in my oil. My second choice he said was to replace the engine. The engine?!! When you're telling me I just needed a head gasket? I paid $120 for the diagnosed and I asked for some type of paper work on the test results that they supposedly performed. The only thing that the person, who was helping, was a receipt that I paid $120 and checked engine as the service performed. The person told me he couldn't find the test results and they don't usually input it in the computer unless I decided to have them perform the service needed. What BS?!!!! UPDATE: I found a friend who had a friend that work at a Nissan dealership mechanic. I had him fixed it and found out that it was only one of the spark plug I wasn't able to remove. Once it was changed the car was back to normal. Cost me $220. Reliance probably knew that was the only problem! read more

Alex is not only a nice soft-spoken guy to deal with, but I've had several things done, from full transmission replacement on a nice car, to getting a friend's bunged up POS repaired on the cheap, and they have all been handled perfectly. I want to chime in and verify, also, that I was able to smog my car for $32, cash. I had gone to SFadvertiser.com's smog check coupons page, and it only takes a little searching on Yelp to find out that many of the smog places are pulling bait-and-switch tactics. Reliance Auto had a recent review posted on here that seemed legit, so I went to them, today. I pulled into the garage around 1pm, and the tech interrupted another job to quickly hook me up and get my car smogged. This was the standard smog, not the Star-Certified one. He simply plugged a cable from his laptop into my OBD port and then let the car idle for some time while he returned to his other work. Total time was around or less than 20 minutes. I concur with everyone else when it comes to Alex and crew. My uncle turned me on to Reliance some years back, and I used to bring my truck in here all the time(literally-the thing was falling apart). Alex is always fair and reasonably priced, and like others have said, if there are multiple ways to attack a particular problem, he will go over all your options with you and help you decide based on your needs and budget. I went online to find the cheapest smog check in SF and found a coupon with a $30 total price from these guys ($19.75 + $8.25 certificate + $2 ET). I called on a Wednesday afternoon and they said were busy that day, but to call Thursday after 10. I called Thursday and they said I could come in any time. I drove there that afternoon, they started immediately, and I had my smog certificate in about 15 minutes. Couldn't be easier. The waiting room is pretty dirty, but it's really cheap and you won't be waiting long. They don't schedule appointments so call first to make sure they can take you. Highly recommended. I am very disappointed in the service I received at Reliance Auto; I take my car in for a smog check. In the process of opening the hood, the technician broke the upper radiator grid off the car. He tells me it was already broken off; someone must have hit it or something and throws it in the backseat of my car. He continues with it's only plastic and how customers blame him for damages all the time. After confirming with an auto body mechanic want I already knew, that he was in a hurry and break it off. He stated there was no damage to other part of the cars, not even to the grid he broke off, so someone hitting it did not happen. And the part would have fell off the car. I suggest for your own protection, that you lift the hood of your own vehicle. I do agree that $41.00 was a good price for a smog check, but now I am out an additional $80.00 to replace the radiator grid he broke off. Oh! I agree they are fast, he completed the smog and break the grid in 20 minutes! PS - I don't want to forget, he did mention he would put the piece back on if I bought the part. Personally, I will not be taking my car there again. I know accidents happen, but for him not to take responsible for the damages is sad. Bad luck? read more

Had my Smog Check done today. Alex was straight forward, price was as quoted over the phone, and the job was done in 30 minutes. Place is no frills, just get the job done, best price around. For comparison, I had literally just come from having a small warranty update done on my Honda. While waiting at SF Honda (who would have charged three and half times what Alex charged) I got to sit in their massage chair and watch TV. Very nice especially because it was no-cost warranty work.
