Ren Coffeehouse is one of my favorite places to go in this area. It's conveniently located right off the river path, so you'll be joined by plenty of cyclist, runners, and walkers. Their drinks are extremely tasty and their service is friendly. The vibe inside is cozy if you can find a seat; it can get a little crowded on the weekends, but there are lots of seats outside. Remember like everybody, they're short staffed so be kind to the people who are working. It's a modern coffee shop that is to say it's a shop that has mixed coffee drinks. To me everything begins with coffee. They did not have any single original coffee almost their blends were all medium roast and pretty weak so I went with an Americano double espresso.Most young people are not into dark roast. They did not even have a French roast. I'm an old coffee house guy that looks for basic brew. In the modern world that is pretty hard. Almost no one makes the dark roast anymore light roast is the thing the more citrus flavored the better. Some people are even offering light roast espresso. So everything with oak milk, almond milk and all kinds of flavored syrups. I get it it's what sells it's what young people like. But for me someone who grew up with Turkish coffee, espresso and dark roast, real newspapers to read and conversations about music and politics, the modern style has limited appeal. So with no single origin dark roast brewed coffee available I thought well I will try an expresso and it was so not smooth. I had an everything bagel it was a breakfast bagel and it was good. The service was fast and efficient. I understand it's change and as Buddha says everything always changes nothing remains without change. However for me I will continue continue to look for a old school coffee shop. read more

My two previous reviews were actually of the Ren Bakery & Espresso Bar, which is a separate sister establishment. This review is of the main Ren Coffeehouse. I had a brie fig pear panini ($12.50) with bacon (an extra $3.12) plus a Mexican mocha ($5.25), which was made with a mix of coffee, cocoa powder, chile powder and a lot of steamed milk. The sandwich was terrific. Might just be the tastiest sandwich I've ever had. The Mexican mocha was nice, though they kind of overdid the chile powder. The place is nice, service was good, nobody got mad when I hung around working on a crossword puzzle, and the sandwich was amazing. read more

Great place for coffee and pastries - we've stopped in twice during morning walks on the Rillito and have left very content and caffeinated. It is a little pricey, but you can definitely taste the quality in their food and coffee. For food, we've only tried the pastries (they offer a good assortment to choose from), and our favorite would be the berry scones - they were warm and tasted freshly baked with delicious whole blueberries. We've had both their hot and iced coffees; the cafe miel with its honey, cinnamon, and nutmeg goodness was lovely and felt like a treat - if you're looking for a non-dairy alternative, I recommend it with oatmilk! This place has one of the best outside shady spots in the city to sip an iced latte and eat a salad. Love their croissants too. I had the market salad and it almost had too many walnuts and dried cranberries in it-maybe more salad to balance it out? But I said almost, because I ended up eating most of the leftover nuts and cranberries anyway. The only thing I'd say needs some work is hiring a busser. Tables filled up fast, but when they were empty - you bus your own tables - no one seemed inclined to clean up. Indeed, I heard the barista say "I'm not hear to clean tables I'm here to make drinks." More power to her, but all the empty tables were indeed filthy, so somebody needs to wipe them down besides the customers. I wiped mine with a damp napkin. It was the very first coffee shop I went to when we moved here and really makes me happy. The sounds and the smells of a true, authentic coffee shop. . This place was really nice! It was pretty busy and although there was a good chunk of indoor/ outdoor seating most of it was filled. I had the mushroom latte which was okay, but I'm not a huge coffee drinker and when i do i tend to like things on the sweeter side! I saw it had agave and thought that might make it a bit sweeter but it was still a bit more on the bitter side. I don't fault them for that though since I mostly tried it because I've heard lions mane is supposed to be a great source of natural energy and I was intrigued! I think next time i go back I'll try a golden latte or chai latte since those are my usual staples and compare based off of that. read more

On a Sunday morning in August, I walked in for my first experience at Ren Coffeehouse at St. Philip's Plaza. The entire area was alive with bicyclists and locals selling their wares. The coffee shop was packed with a line of patrons. I ordered an iced vanilla latte and pumpkin carrot muffin. The price was fair, the lady at the counter was nice and helpful, and the service was fast. The latte was really good with a perfect balance of smooth coffee and solid vanilla. The muffin was unique with a variety of seeds as the topping. It did not have a great deal of flavor but was fresh and rather unique. My overall experience was that there is a reason Ren is known for its coffee. You can pass on the pastries, but don't pass on the coffee. We decided to give them a try after seeing that they had Gluten Free options. It was busy since it was the Saturday market but we found parking right by their door. We also managed to get a table and so we decided to just have breakfast there. Ren is a nice little coffee shop with sandwiches, salads and breakfast options. The staff were friendly even though they were super busy. The prices are a tiny bit higher than similar places in town but not by much. They offer gluten free bagel, bread and a peanut butter cookie. They only charge a buck more for GF options. This makes it one of the cheaper places for us to get some food GF. My wife and I shared an americano and a miel (honey and cinnamon) latte. If I were rating them just on their coffee I'd have given them 4 stars. They have some nice, unique roasts but there are other places in town that have richer, deeper and overall better coffee choices. Again, not bad at all but not the best we've had in town. The food was awesome, fresh breakfast fare. We had the GF versions of their breakfast sandwich and a pear, fig and cheese bagel. So I added a star for that alone. We will definitely come back for breakfast again soon. There is a little, partially shaded patio to sit on. So next time we will bring our tiny dog. He's a fan of coffee shops too. :) read more

Wow can't believe I haven't been here before! This will now be my go to coffee shop. Came in the afternoon for a post workout treat - got the berry moringa smoothie with added whey protein. It was delicious! My new favorite protein drink. Also got the bagel sandwich - everything bagel, over east egg, arugula, tomato, cream cheese, I also enjoyed this classic. Ren Coffeehouse is aesthetically pleasing as it is tasty! We tried their chai latte, mini chocolate croissant, regular croissant, and latte. They were all winners, the chocolate croissant was sweet but not overpowering and the regular was flaky and buttery. I loved my latte and my fiancé's chai can sometimes be too sweet for me from other places but I loved this one so much I will order one with a shot of espresso for myself next time! Their patio is beautiful with grown in trees and tiled tables and I loved the cool globe lighting by their ordering counter. Staff was super friendly and fast in getting us our food and drinks. We stumbled onto this little place while in the business & retail complex. It's really hidden away in the back but worth the navigating to find it. Just yesterday I declined to pay $11. for a smoothie in another little place there (OMG) so went over to REN knowing I would be happy with whatever I choose there. I was hoping for coffee ice cream, but they did not have it. So the darling young lady suggested she could put a shot of espresso in my scoop, and what a treat that was! The coffee that they use for espresso tastes pretty good and the staff are friendly here. This spot probably has the best open patio area for a coffee shop in Tucson. This new spot opened up last month looking like Starbucks and Caffe Lucce will have some competition from anyone willing to pay an extra $.50-1 for their order. It took over the old bike shop's space at St. Phillip's Plaza and turned it into an open, industrial-type setting. Not the warmest or coziest setting, but there's enough seating and a decent enough space to get some reading/studying done. Plus, you can always take your order to go and wander around the plaza. The staff is fairly friendly and the owner was there both times observing and crunching the numbers on her laptop at a table in the corner. First visit, I ordered a plain, hot Americano. The espresso is bold and smooth, and not bitter at all. I'm interested in trying the Fat Americano sometime, as well as some of the food options. The cold brew is decent. A little more on the bitter side but had a nice roasty aftertaste to it. While it's in the beginning stages, I think it has potential. A few small-ish improvements: It would be nice to invest in commercial-free music as they tend to keep the volume up a bit louder and the ads are distracting. The Americano came in a truck stop diner-style mug, and while cupware isn't a dealbreaker, a hip coffeeshop might want to invest in something more modern. The menu is also very difficult to read. I don't know about the bold, futuristic, block lettering, but it seems like it would be difficult to read for anyone who has eyesight issues. read more
