Was driving passed with our bus group and saw the place. It looked empty so we pulled in. No one was in there but the manager came up and said we should have called, told our group we had to use washrooms in the back and when we told her where we were going to dinner said she won't be going there tonight. Cheese. Cheeeeeeeeese! The curds... the mozzarella whips... all the cheeses! This place is amazing. They have what you need, and then some! I hadn't visited since they added fudge to the menu. The girl working the counter was happy to let us sample the various offerings. We left that morning with just our cheese targets, but returned in the afternoon (she remembered us) for some fudge. And wine. And caramels. If you like any of that stuff, this is a must-stop on your way in or (and?) out of town. This is a great stop-over gift shop for our road tripping in the RV. Love the Wisconsin cheese and also a few other gifts. So far, the cheese we bought is delicious. Expecting more of the same. Also even bought some local beer that was pretty darned good. I just wish they had at least some of all of their beers available chilled. They didn't. The staff is so rude that I can't think of much else to say. The shop is cute and good variety of items. Food from the deli was quite good but they refused to leave the mustard off a sandwich for my daughter, acting like we had offended the "chef" or something. A big table full of samples = YES! The sample lady was super friendly... was taking out more samples than what was displayed for me to try. Since I'm not a native Wisconsinite, I've always eaten cheese curds cold. Apparently, you're suppose to keep/eat them at room temperature. You learn something new every day! We were on our way home (to Chicago) from Door County, and I am SO GLAD we stopped here. We ordered the Chicken Salad Sandwich and the Veggie Wrap = highly recommend both. Quick and friendly service!! Chicken Salad Sandwich was on a croissant and was super simple. You could tell that it was fresh and with few ingredients. The cherries were an outstanding addition. Veggie Wrap was on a spinach wrap and loaded with veggies (unlike some veggie wraps that are full of cheese and lettuce). What sold me was the banana peppers and pimento cheese spread. read more

One of my FAVORITE stores! I always stop by when I go home to DC. My faves to get: FRESH cheese curds (they squeak!), morel and leek jack cheese, aged cheddar, and the Maplewood Meats summer sausage (my fave!). Lately also been buying their frozen breaded cheese curds to make in my air fryer. They have SO much more than what I usually buy....a little bit of everything! Specialty DC products including things like cherry salsa, cherry pie filling. Nueske's bacon, my husband's fave. They also sell local wines and spirits. I want to go back. Again and again and again. Hubby and I were in town scouting a new home back in February (I'm a bit slow on this review) and we wanted to check out a bonafide cheese joint. I mean, we were in Wisconsin, after all. We decided to take a trip to Sturgeon Bay to do a little site-seeing along with our cheese tasting. We consider ourselves cheese connoisseurs - only by virtue of the fact that we love, live, eat, drink, sleep and breathe cheese. For reals. We stopped at Renards based on location and lots of recommendations. It did not disappoint. They had samples galore. Cheese samples, curd samples, fudge samples, candy samples. So many amazingly delicious, unique and fun things to see and try. They have lots of souvenir type stuff but not the cheesy (no pun intended!) kind you typically see at touristy spots. There's also a small eatery in a corner of the shop where you can get freshly made sandwiches, pizza, salads, etc. We, of course, opted for some fried cheese curds. Out of this world. Out of this freaking world, I tell ya. They came with ranch dipping sauce that honestly wasn't that great but with curds that yummy, you don't need no dippin' sauce anyway! The employees there were incredibly kind, helpful, knowledgeable and fun. We spoke to one lady there who gave us a particularly interesting history of the shop and the surrounding area. People are just really nice in Wisconsin, you know? We ended up buying all sorts of goodies - both edible and non - and only wished we had a few more days in the area so we could have come back. If you're headed to Sturgeon Bay this is highly recommended. Even if you're NOT headed to Sturgeon Bay, check out Renard's. Worth the drive for sure! read more

Renards Cheese is a fabulous local cheesemaking shop. Their customer service, for one, is top-notch. I have explored many options in their cheesecase, including Door County white cheddar with cherry, bacon, onion, and chive sharp cheddar, their fresh white and orange cheddar cheese curds. I also have found that the bacon cheeseburger pizza is excellent. Renards has a punchcard for frequent pizza purchases, though mine has only one punch, if I recall correctly. I also tried a sandwich from their deli once. I wish I could remember what it was, but it was delicious. I realize that some places in Door County can be seen as tourist traps, but this place is the real deal and provides respite, free samples, and delicious food for the locals as well. read more

Pure Wisconsin. Pure Door County. If you're looking for trendy & artisanal or runny & ripe this is not the cheese place for you. But if hearty cheddars, buttery havartis and other familiar cheeses are what you seek you will find them here. I like the sage cheddar. Renard's makes a variety of flavored cheddars -- cherry, cranberry, apple harvest, olive, salsa, etc. -- but I have not been able to sample them all. Perhaps some flavors are seasonal? This is also the place where you will find cheddar in the shape of Wisconsin, or a cow, or a mug of beer, or a football. You'll find lots of the usual Door County or Wisconsin fare: dried cherries, chocolate covered dried cherries, cherry jams and sauces, and so forth. Renards has recently expanded into a new building with lots of natural light. There's a deli counter where you can enjoy a sandwich, soft drink, tea or coffee, or tuck into the block of cheese you just purchased. Oh how could I forget? Yes, they have cheese curds! What can I say, other than "so good so good so good"? Renard's has been around for as long as I can remember (which is to say that I remember stopping here on the way up to Door County in the mid 80s) and it's always been the gold standard for fresh cheese curds. This is the cheese that I recommend to out-of-town visitors and more than once, I've led a brigade of tourists to visit the store. Now they've created a new, significantly larger store, so it's a lot busier and less charming, but it's still the rock solid fantastic local cheese inside, just a lot more Door County gimcrack and tschotskes. The coffee bar is a nice touch, though. Must try: The string cheese, the smoked gouda, the 5 or more year aged cheddar. Honestly, any of the cheddars over 3 years are THE BOMB. Unfortunately, they've figured out that their aged cheddar is amazing, because they've started charging more for it -- it used to be a lot cheaper, but it's still a very reasonable price. Even the increased prices are still significantly cheaper than what you'd pay in other parts of the country for substandard cheese. We're very spoiled here in the 920. Unique stuff: Ask for a taste of the "young" or baby cheddar. You can only get this at the counter because they don't have pre-wrapped chunks. This is cheese that is basically only a few days old. If you like cheese curds, you'll love it, because the flavor is very similar. Also delicious and a unique Renard's experience-- Farmer Cheese. Skip: Cheese fudge. Just... no. NO. read more

I HAVE to stop here twice every time I visit Door County. Once on the way up to enjoy as I arrive in Door County and again on the way back so I can enjoy them at home (well, if my husband and I don't eat them all on the drive back). Their cheese curds are the yummiest and squeakiest around and are reasonably priced at $4.75 a pound. Every time I have been to Renards, the curds were packed in the bag that day and have not been sitting in a refrigerator for days like other nearby places. Staff will remind you that you have 24 hours before you have to refrigerate them and they taste the best during that first 24 hours. Part of the charm of this place is that when you buy cheese curds, the staff will offer to cut your bag opened and give you a twisty tie so you can eat them as you drive and easily close them back up again (they must know that you will not be able to resist them for long). So do yourself a favor and stop by here and have a squeakier and more enjoyable beginning of your drive home or end of your drive to Door County. read more

Cons are that it can be overcrowded (probably becuase, as mentioned above, it is en route to many Door County destinations), a bit pricey, and some of their product falls short of some of glory that should be Wisconsin Cheese. We have been stopping at Renards cheese since 1984. The new gift store is really quite a nice place. The bigger parking lot is very welcome as well. Their extended hours are great too. Their prices are low in comparison to supermarkets in IL. The cheese is very good. The service is excellent. They are crowded, especially during peak tourist seasons, however, if you go in the winter or on weekdays it's not very crowded at all. Their cheeses are available in Econo Foods and possibly other grocery stores in Door County too. (I have family who lives in the area, I am from IL.) read more

This place is great! Yes it's touristy, but that's the point! The people here were so incredibly helpful and friendly. I think her name was Amanda (needs a raise), she worked the sample table a few days ago and made the whole experience 10 times better! We loved all the souvenirs they had and all the Packers stuff. The options for cheese was crazy! Soooo much cheese! And it was all so good. Their little cafe was great as well. We had the cheese and bacon panini. We went on a less busy day, which was nice, but would suggest this to everyone heading up to Door County. Good food, snacks, souvenirs, and service! Good job guys! read more

They only had yellow curds both times we went and I prefer white We also tried a natural blue cheese which was exceptionally creamy and a cracked black pepper cheddar cheese which was mild with a slight bite from the peppercorns. f your traveling up to Door County Renards Cheese market is a must stop. They have a large market right off the road with an incredible selection of goods. All kinds of Chesses and local Beer, Fudge, Cookies, scones. The freezer case is awesome its hard to not want to buy everything. The even have a small restaurant for sandwiches and stuff. Almost like a Mini Mars Cheese castle...without the castle and better cheese. Their fresh curds are like eating chasse dreams, ultra-squeaky and soft and wonderful. The 9 year Cheddar we bought this last time was really complex and flavorful. They have so many varieties it's hard to choose. We ate almost a full bag of curds on our way up to Baileys Harbor this last time up. I have never had anything we did like, all the Cheese varieties and Sausages were excellent. Allot of the other markets resell their stuff so why not get it from the source. Coming or going or both make sure to stop and check it out. read more
