I got a Reuben Sandwich and I thought it was absolutely nasty!! The meat wasn't only cold, it tasted the opposite of fresh and it tastes like the restaurant purchased it while it was already cooked. The sauerkraut didn't taste fresh either, it was like it they just took it out of a can and put it on the sandwich. Even the cheese lacked of presence and as Swiss cheese is normally one of the best assets of a Reuben, but I could barely even taste it. Been going here for over 20 years. Love the owner Cindy. She is a true gem. I have only the best to say about all the front of house staff at Renee's Cafe are friendly, attentive, and prompt. That's not the kitchen staff. The unseen but much appreciated. Today I order a special order over the phone. (As everything is pick up only during this lockdown)my request was not only met with a "of course" but the gentlemen on the other end clarified that this is what I wanted by going over said ingredients. I came in August 31 l, 2023 at 6pm it was my first time, I noticed when I was at the register looking over at the menu, there was an older woman working there that kept scolding some of the women working there pretty harshly, one of the things I heard her tell this employee who was having trouble focusing on work because of the yelling, this person who was very nice and also was the waitress that brought my food out, the older woman just kept yelling at her with different things at her this was one thing I caught: "HONEY, THE FOOD DOESN'T GO THERE, DO YOU SEE THE WORD "TO GO" ON THE BOX THEN DON'T PUT THE FOOD IN IT!!!!!!! And she was doing it to another woman about a customer's order that was missing something and the employee on the phone was very polite and making sure she got the order right for a customer she was on the phone with. My husband and I were staying at the regency inn so we went across the street so we wouldn't lose our parking spot and I'm so glad we did! This place has really great food, it felt like we were eating dinner at home. We really loved it! The service was even better then the food, our waiter engaged in conversation and was very attentive to us, which is harder to find in restaurants where we are from! I can't believe it. I came in on a beautiful Sunday morning to enjoy a healthy breakfast and was informed that there was no avocado toast. However there was indeed avocados and toast available but there was no way for me to receive them both at once so here I am ordering both a side order of toast and a side order of avocado just to make my avocado toast. We have a vacation home in the area and we've been eating at Renee's for over 15 years. We have always enjoyed the food and service until last week. We hadn't been there in close to a year and were surprised and disappointed at the glum faces of the servers, the long wait to take our orders and the food itself. We stood in the doorway for a few minutes and several servers walked right passed us without so much as a greeting. Since the restaurant was almost empty, we walked over to a table and sat down. We waited for at least 10 minutes before we were given menus and then about 10 minutes for our two orders to be taken. And then.. about then waited for a long time for our food to be served. Again, it was almost empty. When they had 'older' servers, it was a joy to eat there. We were always greeted with a smile and the food seemed to be much better. We tried it again a few days later and everything as above was repeated. My liver was like a dry piece of shoe leather, almost inedible. Excellent service and clean establishment. I ordered the mushroom and sausage omelet with Swiss cheese. Biscuit and gravy. Gravy was tasteless, like thick milk, no seasoning. The biscuit was delicious, light and fluffy. The omelet was just ok. The cheese they used was processed Swiss and that cheese took over the whole flavor of the omelet. The mushrooms in the omelet were dry and over cooked. I wanted to try Renee's again since my last experience with lunch was not good and give them another chance. Cute little spot near the lake with indoor and outdoor dining, which is a part of why I picked it. The staff was sweet to me and my dog, I could tell they were busy, but I was never forgotten outside. As more patrons trickled in after me I could tell the cafe sees regulars that the staff is familiar with taking care of. I was looking for the biscuits and gravy, the biscuit seemed house made and was the perfect size. They cooked my medium over egg perfectly. Oh boy, was our server in a world of her own! You know, the kind that asks if you need anything as she's walking away. No big deal, we got a kick out of it. As for our breakfast the portions of hash browns were tiny and the swiss cheese in my omelet was that fake cheese that gets stuck to the roof of your mouth kinda cheese. We went here twice. The first time we just ordered desserts, ice cream sundaes and shakes. If you had asked me then what I would have rated them I would have easily given them a 3.5 because the wait staff was attentive and the desserts were a hit with the family. We went back on Sunday and made the mistake of arriving near closing time at 3PM. They hurriedly asked us if we wanted to eat because the grills were going to be shutoff soon, we ordered the same desserts along with a couple of appetizers (chili fries and onion rings...bad choice I know but we were pressed for time and figured appetizers wouldn't be a burden). The food was okay but the service left a lot to be desired. We asked for water a couple of times and didn't get it, the only part that arrived promptly without prompting was the check. About half way through our meal I felt better for the people who were turned away for arriving after we did. I wish we would have been part of that group too; that way I could have kept the positive memory I had of this place and not felt like we just dined in a Fosters Freeze and were hurried out the door. read more

Saw this place, looked like it might be an good diner, since it was moderately busy. Our server wasn't especially friendly to us, but she seemed to be nicer to the people seated at other tables. Maybe it's because I'm an out- of-towner, and she recognized that. Once again, service was exceptionally slow. Hubby gave her the 15% tip down to the penny. The food was great. Came to the area from North Carolina on vacation and was treated to lunch here by our hosts. What a little gem! I have had the rather mixed fortune of having to travel the country fairly extensively and this little cafe/diner is EXACTLY the sort of place you hope to find but almost never do. First, the parking lot was full so I anticipated a wait. Never happened. We found a seat promptly and within 2 minutes the nice lady who waited on us had our drink order. I had been craving some good chicken salad so I ordered the Ryan Melt which was chicken salad with melted cheese on beautifully toasted sourdough. I ordered the fries on the side. My wife ordered a BLT with avacado also with the fries. We enjoyed our lemonade and half and half while we waited. Our hosts ( our terrific daughter and her equally terrific boyfriend) also opted for BLT's. I trust their palates but you always really wonder. Well, no need for worry here! The food is delicious! You have to realize something. My wife (also known as "She Who Must Be Obeyed-SWMBO for short) and I love to cook and have become pretty fair over the years. We love chicken salad and make it fairly frequently at home. This little place made the best chicken salad I have ever eaten in a restaurant! Amazing! SWMBO loved her BLT and avacado. We were both pleasantly surprised with our fries! Not cut in house we don't think but doing so couldn't possibly improve them much! They were delicious and perfectly cooked! I ordered waffles, expecting they would actually make waffles. Instead, I got FROZEN waffles that were toasted ( i am pretty sure they were Van's Waffles). I mean come on, what kind of diner doesn't make their own waffles? If your'e going to serve a frozen waffle then you should't be serving waffles at all. 2. Corned Beef Hash, looked and tasted likee dog food out of a can. Given the track record, it most likely was straight out of a can. 3. Atmosphere: there were flies buzzing around the cafe, and we constantly had to swat at them to keep them away from our food. Bottom line: this is not homemade or fresh food. A popular, busy place! Not alot of seating but it cycles pretty fast. We stopped here for lunch while visiting the area. I had the hot beef sandwich and a salad with ranch. My mom had the french dip. My sister had the BLT. My son had the fish sandwich. The hot beef was okay, the beef was juicy but the gravy wasn't very good. The mashed potatoes are definitely homemade. We're in town for opening day of Dove season and my first time staying overnight in this town. We were informed by a friend to try a newly opened restaurant which was a pleasant surprise. I would say a hidden gem in this town and I sincerely mean this. At most restaurants of this type n size your not expecting a great home cooked meal. This is what we received and totally enjoyed with reasonable prices. The delicious lunch n dinner meals we had varied from their ribeye steak sandwich, pork n chicken cutlet, fresh mashed potatoes n their daily specials. If your in town treat yourself to a home cooked meal cause this is what all four of us felt we got. The service was excellent n the establishment was notably clean. The owner (Cynthia) even came to our table to greet n to see how our meal was. That's a personal service you don't see anymore but she was a doll n very hospitable while running her business. Been coming to Renee's for years even when it was Cindy's Drive In. Well we ate more at Renee's since I mostly purchased milkshakes at Cindy's since I was younger. Anyway when we done in everytime except during Covid we ask for no vegetables and extra mashed potatoes to supplement the non vegetables which they have previously always obliged. Yesterday 6/30/2020. Renee's said it would be an extra 2.75, 2.40 for extra MASHED POTATOES (boxed I think is why myself always ordered a "baked" before) I explained that we have never been charged extra before. Was it because of a new employee. This was a phone order to go, and after I got home the entrees where less then dining in and the price of a hamburger patty dinner with salad (they didn't have soup) and extra potatoes was extreme. It was $17.13 total. I thought they had new owners as everyone of the front of house was new. I also didn't appreciate the wierd glares I got from who I suspect is a new cook that got caught dining in the kitchen. Sanitary was not the concern. As I mentioned before I thought Cindy sold the business but no she popped up behind the register and didn't do anything to correct the new employee for an extreme charge. It must be as the girl, lady, whoever she was stated over the phone, "things have changed" well thank you for your wonderful service. It was good (since not many options in Lakeport, don't forget the revolving "specials" of broccoli and cheese ravioli and captains platter. Haha) Sanducci's would have taken over if they opened for dinner, but now Renee's lost there touch because of that, and because they are the only game in town for a "affordable meal" for a family at $17.13 per person. After a hard night of umm sleeping, my stomach needed some greasy grub. All 10 of us drove over an hour because it was the only place open on 4th of July. This place is hilarious, it is just what you would expect from a lake county diner; questionable food with servers who have been on their feet for too many years. Because of my job, I get to visit places in Calfornia I didn't know exist. I didn't even know where Lakeport was nor did I know there was a Clear Lake haha. Renee's is a perfect example is a small town diner. The ladies here are very nice. With not many choices in Lakeport, I have eaten here more than once. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner options. The male waiter with a goatie couldn't stop moving and told my boyfriend he should study the menu more. He then told us he had to go get food and just walked away in the middle of getting our order. The biscuits were chewy because they had been microwaved and the gravy wasn't very tasty at all. The hashbrowns weren't crispy or buttery, but soggy, chewy and bland. They're made using vanilla soft-serve with some flavoring, but on a warm day, they do the trick. After getting our shakes, everything went downhill. Everything seemed a bit bland.
