We discovered this uniquely special place on Yelp after traveling to Puerto Rico with our daughters college basketball team which played at near by UPR Bayamon. The bar/restaurant is basically the car port of the family's house, which has operated here for thirty years. There is no set menu, its new every day. The food is prepared fresh and differently everyday -- unique and fantastic. The food was the best we had during a weeks vacation - So good our group of 14 parents went there twice. We were treated like old friends by Jose, his sister who cooked our fabulous meals and everybody who worked there. The neighborhood car port bar is compete camouflage to the truly remarkable food. The most unique and special dining/eating experiences of our trip and maybe lives. See food photos.

I had the petchuga de pollo with rice, beans, tostones.. I also had my favorite appetizers, sorullios and Pizza empanadas.. The chicken, rice, beans were delicious as usual. The corn fritters were equally delicious but the Pizza empanadas missed the spot.. Can't win them all. But overall I had a great meal and will be back soon! Service was great as the wait staff were attentive and accommodating. As far as the ambience, it was pretty packed there was patrons joining their meals. Can't really remember if there was any music in the background. But it's a very nice restaurant. If you are in the old San Juan Puerto Rico area and are looking for some good Puerto Rican food I suggest that you hit this spot up. You won't be mad. Alright now.. Have a great one yall! -Ray

It could also be that we were seated on the top floor and not the main floor of the restaurant. We ordered the bacalaitos for an appetizer. I ordered the mero al horno (grouper filet). My husband ordered the fried snapper. The bacalaitos were good. The grouper was delicious. I didn't get the chance to try the fried snapper but it looked good. The rice and beans complimented the dish well.

At first, I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they were short staffed, but that did not seem to be the case. The amount of time between ordering drinks, receiving appetizers, and finally getting our meals was simply too long. There were stretches where we were left waiting without much communication or attention from the staff, which took away from the overall experience. On the positive side, the restaurant itself is very nicely designed and has a great atmosphere that fits perfectly with the laid back, tropical lifestyle of Puerto Rico. It is an inviting space and definitely looks like a place where you would expect to have a great local dining experience. Overall, the food was good and the atmosphere was enjoyable, but the slow and inattentive service kept the experience from being what it could have been. Hopefully we just caught them on an off night.

Location/Service ***** Casita Martell is tucked away into a big hill, surrounded by flamboyan trees, and a beautiful view of the sunset! It looks smaller than it is, they have indoor and outdoor dining. Our server was really good, my children don't speak Spanish and our waiter spoke English so it was nice for them to communicate directly. Drinks *** We ordered pina coladas and sadly they did underwhelm a bit. I was expecting it to be a bit more icy and it was more creamy, the heat outside did not work well with a creamy drink. Food **** The plate food (bistek, pork chop, rice, beans) was to good, nothing over the top but not bad, just a good, flavorful meal. The octopus salad was also decent, nice flavor, but I don't think it was fresh, it tasted like the octopus you get out of a can. The shrimp . . . THE SHRIMP! Now those blew my mind! Absolute MUST order. The rellenos de papa were also super delicious! I wish I would've just ordered a tons of those! I'm already looking forward to my next trip back to PR to get some more!

Parking can be a bit tedious but I lucked out with one right in front of it. Ambiance is nice and warm. Seems that there's some trend with some of these newer restaurants to make some sort of more private area for groups bigger than 8, as I saw at least one room that was separated by a glass door, assuming to drown out the noise. Appetizers came out quick. Had the sorullitos and the fried cheese. Sorullitos were okay - I've had much nicer ones. The guava sauce for the queso frito was very good. I will admit that the portion size was great. Main dishes were not spectacular. The stuffed mero with shrimp probably was the best tasting and presented. The kids liked their churrasco but their mofongo, just like my bifongo, was just dry. Very dry and tough in terms of texture. We had to order some garlic sauce so the kids would be able to eat theirs and there was an upcharge for that but it was either that or them not eating. My dish was not appetizing in terms of presentation - just looks like things were thrown around, and the taste was a bit bland. I had some arroz mamposteado as well which was better, but nowhere near expectations. Pretty place with upscale pricing serving subpar food. Would try again one more time to see if it was a one-off, but not holding my breath.
