This was my group's first meal in Puerto Rico! We really wanted to get some mofongo, and this place was close to our base as well. The food was very tasty, and our server was great (El Ninõ aka Supreme). There definitely is a bit of a wait time as other reviews have mentioned, but I think as long as you have some drinks and apps the wait isn't so bad, and the food was certainly worth it. I'd recommend going with the Shrimp Mofongo, which was really tasty and had a great texture. Side note: the hot sauce they make in house is super tasty and properly spicy. We bought a couple bottles to take home.

I hate to say this, because the service was really nice and did their best, but this was by far the most disappointing meal I had my entire trip to Puerto Rico. I ordered the steak in mushroom sauce with a side of Mac and cheese. What I got was an excruciatingly salty slab of meat covered in Campbell's cream of mushroom soup (or at least that's what it tasted like) and, I kid you not, a side of Kraft mac and cheese. Literally classic blue box. And I waited well over an hour for it. Again, the service was delightful, if slow, but that's the kitchen, not them. They were very friendly, though. Drinks were good, too. Lighting needs work.

This place is a scam !! We were here as tourists from New York and visiting this place and thought of supporting a local restaurant which clearly back fired on us and ended up ruining our day. There was a massive mistake made by the staff. The menu does not mention the prices of main dishes. Our main dish (lobster) cost us $130 alone. In the entire duration when the manager was taking the order he never mentioned the weight of the lobster (Menu is even missing the cost per pound which is $30 per pound) We were never told by the staff about the price of the dish, the bill was a shock to us. The food is also average. Overall it was a disastrous experience for us.

***My patented pre-review tip: Specify that you want tap water if you don't want them bringing you a bottle and charging for it. If you prefer bottled and hate the environment like some sort of monster, disregard this tip.*** We went here based on our host's recommendation. The location is very open air (like lots of PR restaurants) and is attached to a mechanic's, but don't let those facts stop you. On the inside it's very classy. You know what else was classy? The prices. We almost walked out when we sat down and saw the prices here, but decided to give it a go since our host spoke highly of it. I think the cheapest entree on the menu was around $18, which isn't terrible, but adding on a drink (we didn't, but got stuck for the aforementioned bottled water) or some extras would have spiked the bill up pretty quickly. We got the mofongo. Every destination has that "must-try" local cuisine with a funny name, and in PR mofongo is it. It consists of mashed plantains (side note: if you notice a bunch of mortar and pestles in the gift shop, that's what that's about) and garlic, and, well...that's basically it. The money shot is what an establishment puts on top, which varies from nothing to the off-the-hook meat and sauce Desperado's puts on its mofongo. The W had one with shrimp and I had skirt steak, and the portions were absolutely generous even at the ~$20 price. Actually, the price was about right for the portions, and just right for the quality, which was outstanding. The shrimp were cooked perfectly, the steak was tender, the sauce was rich, but not too rich. It was along the lines of a beef gravy and decadent in such a good way. I honestly can't imagine we would have found this dish as enjoyable anywhere else on the island. Maybe more authentic, I don't know, but not better. Our server was super friendly and conversational, and she definitely tried for the upsell with appetizers and dessert, but that mofongo dish was the exact right amount of food for one meal for us. I'd actually love to try some other items on the menu, but the prices just went up from what we ordered, and we ain't go that kind of scratch. That said, if we're ever in the neighborhood again, we'll probably go back!

Food taste awesome. You have to order the lobster, it's like one of its kind in the world. I've tried many different style of seafood but none can compare with this one. It's a little bit expensive but it's fresh and special. The Desperado beef steak is tender and juicy. I am surprised that a seafood restaurant can cook beef this well. Highly recommended!

We stayed on PR for 8 days, and ate amazing food all over the island. The Desperado is, by far, the most amazing restaurant on the island!!!!!! My two oldest kids got the lobster w/ garlic sauce, I had the PR sauce (can't remember what it's called but Bryan will explain it, no worries!). (Bryan showed us the lobsters that just came off the boat, totally cool, the freshest food I've had all trip) My wife had the steak (Fricking awesome!). All the portions are huge! You will not mind the cost! If you miss this place it's your loss.

The best mofongo with shrimp around. If you get the seafood plate with lobster be sure to share it with someone there's plenty. Frappe and fruit drinks with a local flair too. Family run, the owner always says hi at your table. This is also the only restaurant in Puerto Rico that plays country music.

Amazing food here! Don't think it can get any better. I got the friend red snapper and fried plantains. They are amazing. My boyfriend got the lobster o bryn also super super delicious. It comes with rice and beans on the side. Huge dishes. Could have split everything but we decided to be fat since were on vacation. Definitely come here for good food!

The Lobster o Bryan was amazing! I would give 5 stars but the service it self was not the greatest, our waitress was cleaning and mopping around us since it was close to 10pm. The Strawberry Mango Frap was also unreal. I would definitely go back next time I am in PR.

Stopped in on a quiet Monday night and was immediately greeted with a friendly smile. My husband and I had 2 bottles of their housemade sangria which was super tasty. I had the red snapper while my husband had the mufongo with shrimp. While I enjoyed my dish I was more into the mofongo which had an amazing garlic butter marinade. Great service and friendly staff. read more

We stopped here after our trip to El Yunque and were all starving. It was my second time ordering mofongo while in Puerto Rico and while the first one was super tasty it left me with the worst heart burn. At Desperado, I ordered it with garlic sauce and it was so amazingly tasty- no heart burn. I was pretty into it. My husband got the churrasco and it was incredible. My son wasn't super into his little chicken wings but that wasn't their fault. Service was a little touch and go but we had pretty much gotten used to that at that point in our trip. Excellent!!! Amanda, our waitperson was awesome. Had wings for app and shared the tastiest, fall off the bone baby back ribs!! Small side salad of shredded lettuce and sliced tomato with a nice fresh dressing. Tasty fries and topped it all off with a slice of Tres Leche cake. Just a few short miles from Grand Melia' or Wyndham. read more

Beyond amazing! The owner and his wife took care of my daughter and I while we were visiting from California. Bryan even made us a lobster and froze it for us to take back to CA with us. Steak was excellent. Had the ribeye, concerned about whether it would be cooked right as we like medium rare, and not only was it cooked correctly, the flavor was amazing. Mofongo as the side was good and the kids loved the chicken strips. read more

My wife and I spent a week at the Gran Melia Resort nearby, and hear good things about Desperado Restaurant from a local. We stopped in Friday for lunch, and were blessed to be waited on by the owner Bryan. He is incredibly friendly, and gave us a tour of the menu. We took him up on just about every recommendation on the menu. The coconut shrimp appetizer was amazing, as was the seafood mofungo for our entree. I understand the place is crazy busy for dinner - it is a great place to go for a leisurely lunch. The country / western atmosphere and music makes this a truly unique spot. Was staying at the Wyndham Resort in Rio Grande and decided to go try what the locals were suggesting. Open air Texas saloon the setting we experienced upon arriving. We were happily greeted by a waitress and seated right away. We picked out a little table by the entrance that gave us a beautiful breeze (refreshing from the hot humidity of the day). The place is very famous for the mofongos and the steaks of course. We decided on the seafood Mofongo and The Churassco Steak. Everything was delicious and Fresh! Didn't have dessert because we were stuffed! Would definitely go back for more! Only complain was the pricing was a little on the high side but well worth it. read more

Had the Lobster Bryan. Very tasty. My only beef with this place is the price. Our lobster Bryan was 1 pound of lobster($25) with the approximate 6 shrimp on it being an additional $15. A small side of fries came with the lobster. We ordered an additional mofongo and 2 pina colada(1 virgin). Total price was over $60. We both felt it was too high for what we ordered. The shrimp in particular was way too high. Not certain how this restaurant got a "$$" price classification. One main course (a small one at that) a side and two drinks should be around $40. Not in excess of $60. read more

I apologize for not writing this review in Spanish, but I need to say that this place is HORRIBLE!!! The only good thing about this place was the bench I sat on... the prices are more expensive than Gordon Ramsey's personal kitchen. I would say the water was the best but the water is $6 for Kirkland PURIFIED water... like seriously you got water bottles from Costco and didn't even bother getting the natural spring?!? My brother in law had ordered a steak 14 oz. and expected that thing was gonna be the best damn steak in the world because we waited about 2 whole hours for our meals to be served... not 30 min, not 1 hour... but 2 FUCKING HOURSSSS!!! So he slices into the steak that he ordered to be medium rare to find that it wasn't even cooked!!! NOT EVEN COOKED!!!!! The steak was maybe put on the grill for 10 seconds on each side.... I suggest getting a dead raccoon on the side of the road to eat than eating the steak that my brother in law ate... after we complained to the manager, he proceeded to argue and say that this is medium rare steak to him and we have no clue what we are talking about.... Yeah my last name means "cook" in Italian for a reason meaning don't fuck up my food!! They took the steak back and it came back looking like it came fresh from the microwave... yep after tasting it, I can definitely tell it was nuked... now onto my meal... I ordered a shrimp mofongo and that thing looked like a 5 year old made it with cheap baby shrimp from a dollar store... I spent $37 for a mofongo that was disgusting... I can build sandcastles on the beach better than whoever built this mound of disaster. Then to top it off, they charged us $44 for the appetizer sampler that is worth $10 in the most basic U.S. mainland restaurant, the appetizers were worth $2 in my mind from how bad they tasted... also back to my brother in law's steak, they charged him $42!!!!! 42 FUCKING DOLLARS FOR A PIECE OF COW SHIT .... Actually cow shit would've tasted better.... So yeah don't go here, go to Wendy's or something that the locals actually enjoy! read more

This is a little diamond in the rough. Amanda the waitress was warm and kind and attentive. We ordered steaks - one med/ well and one med/ rare. We flew in to San Juan and stayed in Fajardo. On our way from the airport to our accommodations, we stopped at Desperado for dinner, where we all ordered mofungo. They had several choices of protein and either garlic sauce or criolla, the traditional red sauce. The garlic sauce was good, but the criolla was outstanding. We ordered empanadas as an appetizer, but another table got the last of them just before we ordered. The atmosphere was neat, as they employed an old west saloon style of decor and played cowboy country music. A little pricey and service wasn't great, but otherwise very good. read more

My wife and I ate here during our vacation in Rio Grande. A nice little open air restaurant. We got lucky and arrived before the dinner rush. Our waitress was great and made sure we had what we needed. My wife had the mofongo churrasco and I had the churrasco desperado. I recommend this restaurant very much read more

Its not even worth writing. One of the worst places i have ever eaten in PR. Subway or any other fast food will be a better option. I usually try to look for positive things to write about if average i don't write. This place is one of the worst ever places. We enjoyed dinner last night here. The red snapper was the best and the steak was very good. We should have had the lobster that went by a few times as it looked delicious! It was very clean and the service was friendly. The only reason I didn't give it 5 star rating was the noise from the road and also they didn't specify that the size of my snapper would have changed the price so dramatically. They did say the lobster was by the weight but nothing about my fish. For that price I would have had the lobster. read more

We had a full rack of ribs that two of us shared. It came with a simple salad and tostones the ribs were a little salty but tasty! A great margarita and dessert made for a nice dinner out. Not inexpensive but worth it. read more

Clearly the positive reviews here are from the employees and/or friends of employees. Never in my life have I paid so much for such CRAPPY food. $50 for a shrimp cocktail (4 frozen), 8 MSG chicken wings and two piña coladas. The service was good but 7 hours later we are still hurting from the raping we got at this place. We are from the island and there is no way this place is gonna last with the poor quality and ridiculous prices. Stay far far away!!! If I could I would give no stars!! PS you're eating right next door to a mechanics garage! read more

We ordered the creamy lobster bisque, pineapple rice with shrimp, a beef empanada, which was so yummy, the pork loin medallions stuff with ground beef picadillo, and a side of maduros. The lobster bisque was good but with noting that it's made with pimento cheese. It's more cheesy than creamy. Definitely recommend, can be pricey depending on what you get, so sharing is ideal. Guests at all the tables around me raved about their meals. Indoor seating is cozy and comfortable. There's a small bar with counter seating.

La mejor comida que e comido, el mofongo es un paladar de los dioses. El churrasco el mejor, creo que la vaca nunca camino jajajajaja los camarones en salsa de coco inespicable el gusto.
