This included a wood stove - set up & ready with starter kindling & matches, a fire pit with a large stack of neatly split oak logs (we loved the fire under the stars with the sounds of the river below), a well-stocked kitchen, plenty of fluffy towels and comfy, soft linens. A raccoon theme added a fun touch, too. We quickly made ourselves at home and stayed warm & happy. Oh, and did I mention the hot tub? Wonderful!

If you're looking for a fun, comfortable, outdoorsy stay in the area, check out the Postcard Cabins instead! THE GOOD: The property is located in a beautiful area. Views are great. I really like the food at Bearr Appetit restaurant -- kudos to the chef! THE BAD: Customer service is poor. I get the impression management must have simply stopped caring at some point. Example 1: I tried contacting the property multiple times before our reservation. Half the time, nobody answered the phone. I left a voicemail once and nobody responded. The two times someone answered, they promised to call me back with an answer to my question, but never did. Example 2: The morning of July 4, only one server showed up on time for her shift at Bearr Appetit. The poor girl was HUSTLING to keep up with multiple tables, indoors and outdoors, in hot and humid weather. I'm standing alone at the host stand waiting to be seated for about 5 minutes. A manager (owner?) is sitting at the cash register counting the money. Finally the manager/owner stands up, starts heading the the kitchen, sees me, and asks, "Are you waiting to be seated?" I say yes. She POINTS AT THE POOR WAITRESS who's struggling to keep up and says, "She'll be right with you." Then proceeds into the kitchen. Finally I asked the waitress if I should seat myself, which she appreciated and agreed to. Example 3: Upon departing 2 nights early due to the condition of the property (discussed below), my wife wrote an email explaining the issues and asking if they'd refund one night as a compromise. It's been a week now and we're starting to doubt we'll ever get so much as an acknowledgement. THE UGLY: My wife and I stayed with our dog in the Speckled Owl cabin. It's a good sized, secluded property, but it soon became clear to us that management puts minimal effort into maintaining it. Example 1: The first thing we noticed was that the ground floor was COVERED IN DEAD MILLIPEDES. We immediately called maintenance, who promptly came to vacuum them up. But in less than 24 hours, the floor was COVERED IN LIVING MILLIPEDES. This made the first floor basically unusable to us. If we needed something from the kitchen we had to tiptoe around the bugs. By Day 2, the millipedes were migrating upstairs to the bedroom. (That's when my wife decided we needed to go.) Example 2: Enormous cobwebs everywhere, inside and outside. Example 3: Patio and terrace furniture was filthy and disgusting. Bird poop and other crap all over the chairs and tables. Example 4: Linens and towels were old and worn to the point that we wondered how clean they were. Example 5: The mattress was awful. You can feel the the springs and if one person moves, everyone moves. Bottom line, we were extremely disappointed in Lydia Mountain Lodge & Cabins. We feel there's a lot of potential to make this into a special place given the wonderful location, but that the current ownership/management has no real interest in the guest experience.

Overall the cabin was very clean, the terms were reasonable, it had everything we needed, and the view/location was perfect. If you're traveling to the area I'd definitely recommend looking into their options.

Very private. a fantastic get away and only 1 hour and 20 minutes from DC. Highly recommended. 15 minutes from Front Royal and 10 minutes from Luray. It is the coziest little getaway in Luray situated on an absolutely beautiful property. There are five cabins in total that are intended to be a couple's getaway, so the property is always very quiet and peaceful. It feels very connected to nature- we've seen deer very close to each of the structures when we've stayed. We've had the pleasure of staying in the Dragonfly, Bumblebee, and Ladybug cabins and have really enjoyed each one- they all have a similar feel but are built slightly differently. This time around, we were in the Bumblebee cabin, which is quite spacious and shares a structure with the Dragonfly cabin. There was a gas fireplace and a TV downstairs where we spent most of our time reading; there was also a couch upstairs in the hallway outside of the bedroom, and a cute balcony we probably would have spent time on if it was warmer! It is absolutely the kind of place where you can just stay in your cabin the entire time you're there, but it's also located pretty close to Sperryville and downtown Luray if you're looking to venture out. To fully take advantage of SME, I'd recommend bringing your own food or groceries to cook- there's not a whole lot close by (which is part of the charm!), but the kitchen is well-equipped with a microwave, oven, and stovetop. There's a pizza place that delivers right to the cabins, which is nice- honestly, the pizza isn't very good, but it's nice to have the option. There are also bottles of wine available for purchase in your cabin, which is nice to have available. You won't meet two nicer people than the owners of SME, Karen and Ralph. It is so clear how much they love SME and sharing their love of the property, which reflects their travels through Europe, with those who stay there. There will always be a delicious baked treat from Karen waiting in your cabin when you arrive, and if you're lucky, she or Ralph will show you around the property and tell you about the structures, all of which were built by Ralph and designed by them both. They are so friendly and kindhearted and make it such a special place to stay. As just one example- it snowed one of the nights we stayed, and Ralph cleared off our car without us even asking. SME feels so calm and peaceful- it's a true VA oasis. We're already planning our next trip back!

Everything we needed to cook with was there. Also the personalized Foxglove Retreat items like brochures, chapstick and napkins are very nice touches. Baker is a great host and very informative in to what is all available locally. We did not want for anything. I will definitely stay here again.
