Did I truly forget to review Revival? How can that be? The Fried Chicken here is just about the best I have ever had. Tender, juicy, crispy, crackly, flavorful, full-sized pieces of their wonderful chicken. Hubby had the wings and they were these HUGE pieces of deliciousness as well. The sides are incredible, from the hush puppies to the collards, to the mac and cheese, and every little bit and bite. So so good. How about a quick education in Hot Chicken: No it's not just chicken with spices. The entire chicken is encased in a spicy sauce, causing it to turn a dark red color. This is seldom found outside of Nashville area. When you are lucky enough to find a place serving it, it's version is usually pretty terrible to be honest. Revival has nailed the Tennessee hot down to the white bread it's served on. Juicy, crispy, spicy. This would make Nashville proud. Johnnycakes: ham, cheddar, cowpeas, poached egg. This combination doesn't make sense at all on paper, but your mouth will tell you otherwise. Perfect balance of flavors and textures. It's like a delicious work of art. Mac and cheese: a healthy portion of cavatappi, smothered in cheese. Nicely al dente but the only slight bump on the day as it was a little under seasoned for my liking. Biscuits and sorghum butter: one of the hardest things to pull off, a southern biscuit. Revival knocks another one out of the park. Two warm, buttery, flaky biscuits packing major punch. Alone they are more than adequate, but with the sorghum butter? A whole new level of mmmmm! And I'm not sure I even know what sorghum is.... House pickles: usually not a pickle guy but these house pickles are sweet and more on the dill side. This provides a balance with the spiciness of the chicken. A beautiful marriage indeed. How can you not love the original location. I have been to location many times but, last night I went and we discussed how much we enjoy this place and how it's a Minnesota Staple. When people visit from our of town Revival is a must for recommendation. I love the fries chicken. My favorite is Tennessee hot! It's crispy, juicy, and tender with a litter kick. The poltrygeist can be HOT! Like really hot but my boyfriend disagrees. He can handle it a lot better than me, and I really like spicy. The Mac and Cheese is my favorite side! It's cheesy goodness warms my Wisconsin heart. The cheddar grits are also super delicious. Desert? Oh yeah, they rock that too! My person favorite is the banana cream pie. It's so good! I am a big fan of the spicy food scene on Nicolette street and Revival did not disappoint! I don't have the highest spicy tolerance and I was still able to eat my meal without feeling miserable at the end of it :) definitely recommend the grits as a side as it helps offset the spicy ness while also being delicious and filling. My boyfriend and I split the cheese curds and we both agreed they were some of the best fried cheese curds we've ever had!!!! They're extremely crunchy with a bright destines and spice that makes you smile when you eat them :) nomnomnom. Will give revival another shot but first time in was less than spectacular. Started with chicken livers as a starter which were great and an insane amount they easily could have been enough for a meal. Loved that. Our server wasn't very talkative and being our first time in we would have liked to have someone that could've given us some go-to's but hey no biggie. The issue came when we didn't receive our food for over an hour after the chicken livers came out. After about 45 minutes instead of the server letting us know that they made a mistake he just kept saying it's about up. Finally received our chicken and sides after about hour and fifteen minutes. I understand mistakes happen but just be honest about it and I would have no problem whatsoever but to keep dragging us on was alittle frustrating. But hey he comped one beer since that's the only thing we could do for an hour was drink I guess that was an apology and much appreciated. Stuff happens no biggie chicken was tender, flavor was middle of the road and I wasn't a fan of the two sauces on the table. Next time I'll bring my hot sauce. Everyone raves about Revival's fried chicken -- even Southerners. On our visit we found the Tennessee fried chicken to be spicy, juicy and crispy. The chicken and waffle entrée was delicious and filling. Most dishes are served ala carte with a choice of interesting sides. The wait staff is friendly. The kitchen has the routine down pat and delivers your food in short order. Would I go again? I'm not so sure. My ambivalence has to do more with the environment and atmosphere than the food. The Minneapolis Revival is small. The front door opens directly into the restaurant, which in the winter can be unpleasant. The tables are tiny and jammed together. There is almost always a line and there is no place to wait for a table other than hovering over those seated. And they know you're eyeballing them. So, before I return I will weigh the experience eating really good Southern fried chicken against the environment Revival requires its customers to endure. Let me just say that I'm not normally a fan of fried chicken but I LOVED Revival Chicken. (I was tempted to order their burger, because the table next to us got one and it looked amazing) but as a first visit, we had to go with the chicken. Tried the Revival (Nicollet location) tonight while in town visiting. I wish we would've picked a different place to eat. The food lacks seasoning & flavor. The best thing that they made was the fried brussels sprout salad. The pork shoulder had a very overpowering vinegar smell and taste. The Korean ribs also had a very overpowering vinegar taste as well (these are not like traditional sticky ribs, so please do not order them if you're looking for good sticky ribs). The ambiance was clean and staff was friendly. However, I was very surprised to see that I was still being charged for the 2 food items that I sent back to the kitchen due to the horrible taste (This is not proper restaurant management. In fact, it's very poor customer service). I travel quite often so I've eaten at a large array of different restaurants and never in my journey of restaurants have I ever been charged for food that was sent back. When I asked the waitress why were the items still on the bill, she stated that their management does not remove items from the bill that are related to customer dissatisfaction. I have over 20+ years in customer service experience and this is not the proper way to treat customers. And no, this is not about free food, it's about treating paying customers with respect and allowing them to enjoy eating at your restaurant without being in fear of trying new food. I will not be returning to this restaurant but I do hope that their policy changes to allow for a better customer experience. read more

Revival is a cozy, modern, SMALL restaurant. I have been wanting to go here for some time and was able to go yesterday. We went at 4 to beat the rush and only had to wait 2-3 minutes for a table. We ordered chicken and waffles, fried green tomatoes, half bird southern style, hush puppies, mac and cheese side and the jerk cauliflower. The chicken was not salty at all. The skin was very crispy and the meat was juicy with lots of flavor. The pieces were also very nicely sized. The best part of the meal was the jerk cauliflower. The menu options looked very appealing and ordered Texas Twinkies, brisket plate with Mac and cheese, and Spare ribs plate with sweet corn pudding (similar to cream corn). A corn bread muffin and sweet pickles comes with both plates. The meat portions were good but the sides were just fair. The Texas Twinkie, a bacon wrapped cream cheese stuff jalapeño, was undercooked and the bacon was not crispy as expected. The corn bread muffins were overbaked and the bottoms were nearly burned. The hostess, Alison was gracious when we entered and quick to ensure to get the names and number of your party. She was on top of getting people seated in a timely manner. Not a simple feat since the place is small and usually packed. Our server, Liz was amazing! She was so sweet and offered wonderful recommendations. She truly made it a memorable experience. Jeb politely bused our tables right away. You can tell the staffs happy attitude rubbed off on the diners. Each plate showcases the chef's ability to combine bold personality and the best of the seasons with their perspective on Southern traditions. I'm always smitten with the house sauces. Forgetting the packed flavor and heat that comes with the ghost pepper sauce... yet I'm always wanting more with each heavy breathing bite. I love fried chicken and I was very excited to finally check out Revival. I came here on my birthday with my girlfriend. We came here on a Tuesday night and there wasn't too much of a wait. Partly due to the new Revival location in St. Paul. We got the Revival burger and Tennessee Hot 1/2 bird + Mac and cheese and hush puppy sides. I love spice, but man, the Tennessee Hot was quite spicy. I could barely handle it. I wish I got the regular Southern fried. I felt like I was battling the spice by drenching water after each bite. The fried chicken was good though, just a little too spicy. I've heard good things about the Revival burger, but I thought it was okay. Not anything special. It's a solid burger, but the double patty kind of just reminded me of fast food type burger patties. It's good, but it's not premium like what you can get at Red Cow or Blue Door Pub. Mac and Cheese was okay, I didn't each much of it. My girlfriend thought it was not bad. Lastly the hush puppies. It's basically fried corn bread. I love corn bread, so I liked it. It was yummy. I was almost in tears because I wanted to try this so bad and have waited to get this item for so long and felt the world was against me. I left walked around the street and as I was about to give up the manager comes running out to say the batter has just been completed! This is the second time that I've been to Revival and it did not disappoint. We actually didn't look at what time it opened and came here 30 mins early. We were the first in line! It closes between 2-4pm on the weekdays. They do this so the staff can take a break and have a breather. It is always busy here! By the time the door opened, there was a line waiting outside already. We were the first one to take a seat and ordered. I looked up and all the tables have been already filled! I would recommend going at 4pm to beat the dinner crowd if you can. I went with a group of friends so we ordered the whole bird Tennessee hot and split it 4 ways. Everyone was able to get 2 pieces. Biscuits-The biscuits are so good. My friend is from the South and she recommends the biscuits here and says it is the best biscuits ever. The spread that comes with is a buttery and sweet. Here are my thoughts on the items we ordered: Tennessee Hot Fried Chicken Sandwich - 4.5/5. This was so good! I wish we ordered an extra sandwich. The outside was crispy and crunchy, and the chicken itself was very juicy. However, I might just order the regular chicken next time if the chicken is the same. More chicken please! Garlic Clams - 4/5. I actually didn't have any expectations for this dish but was pleasantly surprised at how flavorful the clams were. The bacon bits were a bonus! Dry rubbed wings - 3.5/5. My sister enjoyed these a little more than I did. I thought they were good, but I'm not completely sold. Definitely worth a try if you're in the mood for wings! Probably not for me though. Mac & Cheese - 3/5. Good but nothing spectacular. Tastes like what you'd expect for mac and cheese. Despite a generally positive experience, I do have some complaints: 1) We felt very crammed at our table. I was almost elbow to elbow with the next table over and I just did not feel like I had enough space. 2) Our waiter was very curt with us. He wasn't outright mean, but we didn't feel like he liked us too much. When we asked if we could have our sandwich cut in half, he replied plainly 'I'll get you a knife'.
