Rex is a great place to grab a tasty coffee and a substaintial sandwich, and hang out for a bit to work or catch up with a friend. It has a neighborhood feel and obvious pride in their "chef created" sandwiches. It is a refreshing contrast to other nearby spots which feel more hectic and emphasize sugar in their food options. So far I've had their drip coffee (Counter Culture), their cauliflower, and their cuban sandwiches, and a croissant. Coffee was good. The cauliflower sandwich was great and reason enough for a visit (though the bread was a bit flimsy for my taste). The cuban was tasty, though a bit more greasy than I would have liked and the pulled pork could have been a bit less shredded. That said, the bread was good, and if a pile of meat is your thing, you will likely enjoy it. The croissant was not great, possibly stale. I've only had one, so I might have been unlucky. Opted to go here with my boyfriend for breakfast last weekend because we were both tired of overpaying for crappy brunch food and it was 100% a solid call. This is a solid spot for a fresh egg sandwich with a homemade feel (and the chocolate chip cookies are delicious!) Although there are two communal tables, the shop is rather small, so I wouldn't recommend making plans for a sit down meal here. Looking for a quick breakfast after flying into NYC early in the morning I of course looked to YELP. I was looking for a unique place for a near my accommodations and found REX. Walking up to REX I knew I had made the correct choice. A line out the door, and upon entering what looked like great pastry and the food that was brought out to the waiting customers. I waited in line looking at all the tempting items in the case and ordered my egg sandwich on brioche with added bacon and cheese with a cappuccino. Both were so good! I loved the atmosphere, small but full of character and was lucky to snag a seat at a table. So much that after finishing my sandwich and cappuccino, I ordered an additional coffee and stayed a while watching people on the street and having a nice conversation with the gentleman sitting at the same table. I start many mornings with a latte from Rex, plus or minus a blueberry muffin. Their coffee is strong without being too sweet (unlike the Starbucks across the street). Blueberry muffin is full of blueberries, fluffy, not overly sweet (obviously, I have a problem with things being too sweet). None of that foamy scrambled stuff most other places make, this place fries it and leaves it just runny enough that it doesn't make a mess. Beginning this review as I somewhat patiently wait for our 2 egg sandwiches. Staff seems quite friendly, if not overly congenial. The place is small with pretty limited seating, so beware. They were busy, which is always a good sign. Only one guy working his butt off to make all the sandwiches. Once we got ours, they were both very good. Came here on a rainy day to do some work and escape the floods in the streets. It was a little chilly inside, made even colder by being wet so I ordered an almond milk latte and a cinnamon...muffin? Prices were pretty normal--came out to $9.75. Very pretty, kind of layered in a petal format and dusted with granulated sugar on top. I think using a powdered sugar be better, as the graininess of the granulated sugar didn't really add to the muffin itself. It was very moist and I liked the almost crunchy crust. The latte was superb and the barista himself seemed very skilled as his latte art was on point, which can be hard to do with almond milk. Tasted good even as it got cold. Wifi is available, but it was too slow for me to use so I just ended up using my personal hotspot. There's only one outlet, so if you're here to use a laptop, make sure you're fully charged.
