Wonderful coffee shop that constantly has new and interesting beans a d roasts to try. Staff are helpful and efficient and turn around orders relatively quickly. Love ordering an Americano here ($3.50), though I've personally enjoyed some of their other drinks here (Iced Chai, Capp, etc) Pastry and sandwich selection also changes, but always has interesting options. Personally a huge fan of the cuban when they have it. Food here tends to the pricier side, but is well deserved. Bottom line: I'd probably be filling up their loyalty punch cards more often if I could afford it!! Beats the Starbucks across the street every day though, hands down. read more

There is a barista at this place--he's tall, wears glasses, with short brown hair and brown eyes--who makes the greatest capuchino I have ever had. I know this sounds like hyperbole, but his capuchinos actually taste like a milky blueberry pie. I have never had a better capuchino in Manhattan and I doubt Redhook or any other Brooklyn neighborhood has a better capuchino. I never got his name, but if you ever see him (he looks a bit like a dad) please order a capuchino. Their breakfast sandwiches are amazing too. That is all. read more

On my trip to NYC I happen to yelp this small coffee shop. I must say it was delicious, it did not disappoint you can chose your sandwich on a bioche bread or a croissant they have choices from egg whites, regular eggs, avocado, cheese, chorizo, hot sauce, that you can add on your sandwich. Everyone was very friendly but and the food was amazing. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because of the seating, it's sooo small they barley have any chairs. There's 2 tables with 5 chairs each. A max of 10 people could be eating in there. This coffee shop is good to grab breakfast and go, the food came out immediately and was very tasty. read more

That I am a regular in spite of the cost serves as a testament to the appreciation I have for the food and coffee. With that said, Rex unfortunately falls prey to the selfsame dilemma that many coffeeshops do, inadvertently perhaps, creating an unsafe environment for trans and gender nonconforming customers. Rather than taking down a name for orders, there is a reliance on the payment system to pull names from cards, resulting in trans and GNC customers, such as myself, to get loudly and uncomfortably deadnamed. Despite the repeated assertions of my name when providing my order and correcting the error when receiving it, this problem persists. Particularly vexing, given the regularity with which I patronize the establishment, that said repetition has not connected the name given to the face it belongs to. In any case, it is an easy enough solution to simply ask customers their name as a part of the process; plenty of coffeeshops have implemented this without detriment to ordering efficiency. I would strongly recommend Rex integrate this procedure in their business practice. read more

They had just finished dialing in this season's rather challenging Hologram blend from Counter Culture (lots of toasty, charred notes, and slight umami going on in this Winter's version) and they really did a swell job. Their barista, Greg, pulled all the ripe fruity sweet notes the blend could give nicely to the front and got it to a balanced level of acidity where it developed into a smooth slightly nutty, slightly toasty finish. I cant emphasize how much I love Yelp for bringing me to little gems like this that I would have otherwise overlooked. Great little shop to grab coffee, tea or a sandwich. Came here to specifically try the Rex Cuban and it was delicious. The half size was enough for lunch and was very fresh. The pork was flavorful and the panini style was a nice twist on the average cuban style sandwich. This place is small so you will either have to take it to go or share one of the two tables that they have. I was really impressed by the quality of food and will absolutely be returning not only for lunch but breakfast as well. read more

I've had several items from Rex - the cowboy cookie, the banana bread, the Cuban sandwich, mocha, iced chai, and the ham croissant. So far it seems like their food items are pretty great, but their drinks are definitely not worth getting. Mocha: definitely not at the top of the list of best mochas I've ever had. The balance of chocolate and espresso was off, in my opinion. Ham croissant: wonderful! The croissant is so tasteful, and when combined with the ham, it was heavenly. Banana bread: pretty solid, but my least favorite pastry of theirs. Iced chai: very average - wouldn't get again. Cuban sandwich: AMAZING. I was so impressed by how good it was. I'm not even fully aware of all the ingredients, but they fit together so well! 100% recommend. Cowboy cookie: also very good! I'm going to pretend I'm cool enough to write a review for a coffee shop as high-end as this one. But, truth be told, I'm not. I just can't hang. Rex is allegedly amazing because it offers counter culture beans. Do I know what those are? Nope. Did I pretend like I did? Yep. Was it lovely coffee? Sure was. I ordered decaf because the last thing I need is more stimulation, but they said that don't have that on hand so they would do a drip. I nodded and smiled as if I know what that means, not understanding why the coffee can't be simply poured from the pot into the cup. Too embarrassed to ask and not wanting to hold up the line, I just took a regular coffee. If you like your coffee made by drip you will enjoy this place and then you can explain to me what this means. The baked goods are self-explanatory and delightful. I understand scones on a deep level so that part was clear. Generally I try to go for soy milk but much to my surprise almond and oat milk were the only two non-dairy choices. I'm not exactly sure how one looks at all the plant-based milk options and says "yes, THOSE" to almond and oat, but alrighty. Turns out oat milk essentially tastes like nothing so its a good option if you don't want it to get in the way of the flavor those amazing counter culture beans, whatever they are. So, take this review for what it is: one from a girl who called her Keurig "too confusing." That being said, I liked it very much and have been back several times. read more

It's usually a tactless act to rate somewhere on yelp according to your own personal circumstance, but fuck it, I'm gonna: 5-stars because I work across the street, and there is nothing like this in walking distance. I've been wanting something like this for a long time. The coffees are of the Counter Culture breed. From what they told me last week, they change pour overs bean about once a week, and the drip once a month --- or the other way around. As our coffee tour of NYC continues, we stumbled upon Rex in a part of upper Hell's Kitchen that is seriously devoid of great coffee. We really loved the modern vibe, genuinely friendly team who welcomed and served us, and beautifully made coffee's. A great little blackboard menu and a solid nod to coffee geekdom with pour-overs, weighing scales and a high end espresso machine. The Counter Culture coffee was lovely and made delish lattes. I really want to say something about the fit-out, so many places in NY are over-stylized to the n'th degree with the new eco-corporate-cookie-cutter vibe. We loved that Rex was a rustic, homely space, yet professional with raw wood finishes and a design that lets the staff easily interact with customers, while keeping it real. It would only take two visits to feel like a local here. The only downside (for me, probably not for others), was the place was packed with people all sitting silently on their computers. I know wi-fi brings bodies in (don't know how much they spend mind you, most didn't even have a coffee in front of them), but it was strange to see the one person who wanted to sit and eat a sandwich and drink a coffee looking like they were the odd man out in the shop. Rex and their respective baristas house the best cappuccino that I've had in NYC. I'm not a native New Yorker but I recently visited NYC with the intention to find the best coffee in the world. I asked a lot of coffee enthusiast friends, I used coffee blogs, and yelp of course and formulated a list of around 15 different coffee spots. My wife and I went to 10 of them, and after our grand tour the prize goes to Rex. The friendly baristas, the high quality espresso, and the simple yet stylish decor did it for me. If I lived in the area this would be my spot. What made it stand out above the rest? They use Stumptown's beans which are arguably the best beans available. Although the specific blend that they were using when I was there was unlike Stumptown's typical espresso, there was a subtle hint of fruit, delicious. I'm looking forward to returning. read more

I was really excited to check this place out because I work near it. Honestly, I was very underwhelmed. The place was smaller than I thought and the service was slow. Everyone was nice enough but it just didn't have the wow factor, especially when it came to their espresso. I'm not sure what it is, but I was just not digging the weird earthy smell... There's also a lot of health food there... but no "unhealthy" options that really peaked my interest. My friend also got a latte with oatmeal milk. Rex is a great alternative to the countless Starbucks in the area, but as someone already pointed out below, they are very holier than thou when it comes to coffee additives. Exhibit a - they don't have any flavored syrups. It's all about keeping the coffee pure, amiright? Exhibit b - no soy milk. The first time I went here, they offered me almond milk, which I honestly dislike. The second time, they were like, oh guess what? We got a new milk! And I was like....is it soy? And they were like, Nope, we got oat milk! Oat milk. OAT milk. They got oat milk before getting soy milk. FYI, oat milk tastes like chalk in a chai latte. So anyways, it's a good place to go to if you need to do some work and Time Warner Cable isn't working at home (yay free wifi), but don't expect a pumpkin spice latte here anytime soon. read more

Sorry to be a downer, but I am not seeing how Rex is getting all these five-star reviews.The place is very small with barely anyplace to sit. The food selection is sparse. The scone was okay, but was not bursting with flavor like I had expected. The mocha was good, but not outstanding. I was disappointed that Rex only has one -sized cup. Maybe living in the land of the amazing coffee shops (RI) has spoiled me, but I didn't see why my mediocre scone and nothing-to-write-home-about-partly-because-it's-so-small mocha was worth $7--even in NYC. read more

We almost walked right passed this place. The chalkboard on the sidewalk showed a very faded 'Rex' and no sign on the door. So happy we found it. Being from LA, I am very excited to find places that serve their coffee and tea drinks with an almond milk option. For those that don't do dairy and try to avoid soy, almond milk is a terrific choice. I had a chai latte and my fiancé had the mocha. Both were phenom. We also shared a carrot muffin and blueberry muffin. Both were delicious...moist, flavorful and richly textured. By the time we sat down and finished a charming convo with a stranger, we knew we had to get more for the road. The banana walnut bread, cowboy cookie and scone were all just as heavenly the next day. We will make Rex a part of our NYC routine for all of our subsequent visits. read more

This is a cozy breakfast and coffee shop but we loved it! My husband and I stopped in on our last morning in New York for some much needed coffee and breakfast. The almond milk mochas were creamy, subtlety sweet, and steamed to perfection. Well, my husband's was poured over ice, but he said it was just as fantastic. The service was friendly and helpful (thanks for being patient for my husband who never seems to know what he wants to order when it is his turn!) and everything was made fresh to order. He ordered a breakfast sandwich with egg, cheese, sausage and bacon and said it was delicious. We sat and watched the rain for a bit before heading to our hotel, but it is definitely worth the stop in! read more

Rex has delicious quality coffee and drinks. I recently had the pour over decaf and a chai made with almond milk. I dare say their chai is the best (and quite addicting!). Perhaps the only improvement would be even larger sizes. :) Would also be great to see some gluten free options. Everything looks delicious there but I can't partake for the gluten. I did see a flourless brownie on the menu that piqued my interest, but sadly it wasn't available on my latest trip. I highly recommend this charming shop even if it requires a bit of extra travel.
