Growing up not too far away, this was the only true (non-corporate) music store where you could get all sorts of esoteric music. Listening to KSPC 88.7 (the local college radio station) and getting exposed to punk, jazz, reggae, and ska made me want to expand my musical tastes and Rhino allowed me to do that. I came here today and treated well. The staff asked if I needed some help and even though they didn't have it, they said they could order it. You don't get that too often. During lunch, I realized that I was overcharged on one of my CDs and when I went back, they had no problem giving me a credit for it on my card. Very professional. When I was in high school, I used to hang out there all the time. It is a great place to get used CDs and I used to spend forever in that store. The people who work there are awesome. There used to be this guy who worked there who was so super nice and helpful. I went in once with the most obscure description of a band I had heard somewhere that sounded almost folk-jazz-pop-electronic-ish and he looked at me, blinked, and then spent I don't know how long leading me around the store helping me figure out what I was looking for. They also have good music playing in the store. It's a good way to get introduced to new music because who wants to go into a record store where they are playing all the things you hear on the radio? Also, when you can, try to catch their sidewalk sales. I got a bunch of cool records (albeit I don't own a record player but I'm working on that) at one of their sidewalk/parking lot sales. i'm a softie when it comes to record stores. They make me feel nostalgic and make me yearn that I lived in another area when shit wasn't so commercialized. I get these nice feelings when I walk into Rhino Records. It has the most wonderful location in a liberal college town and caters to the masses of people that walk through the doors everyday. The selection is phenomenal with so many things on vinyl. When I say they have everything, I mean it. The place is literally cluttered with items for the serious music collector or pack rat. They have one of the best collections of vinyl and classic rock I have ever seen (next to Amoeba, of course). Plus they have this great jazz collection. You could seriously shop for everyone in your family here. Including like your Uncle Rob who like polka music. There's posters and all that good stuff. Don't forget to check out their wide array of books on all kinds of music-type stuff. I did take away one star b/c these people aren't as helpful as the staff at some of the other awesome record stores I've been to, but maybe I went on a bad day. Avoid over paying. I will not be shopping here anymore after the terrible experience and service I just received. First off, the guy up front was clueless and had no knowledge to anything I was looking for, which is a first cause the previous times I've visited everyone there was very knowledgeable. Both employees there also couldn't care less with helping me; yet, they were more than willing to help anyone else in the store. And above all else, don't purchase from here without looking at alternative sources. I made that mistake and could have saved a lot. And it's not like they care cause they won't bother to mention about all sales being final or anything. You can definitely find some hidden gems in the used section and they have decent prices on used vinyl as well. I always go out of my way to support the indie shops. Still crazy after all these years I was at grad school at Claremont and visited Rhino for sustenance for years - you probably saw me loitering in the World music section or the Misc Compilations 50s bins - under-nourished and mesmerized by the selection. Some examples the Camper Van Beethoven box set _Cigarettes and Carrot Juice_ in mint condition (5 discs) for $20 the Ace records Golden Age of Rock and Roll and Early Girls series - they still have these in stock (get them while you can) and so much more - the joint weekend sidewalk sales with Video Paradiso are a great place to shop. read more

I'm a rare breed. I still buy cds. I know I'm a bad person. Vinyl is better but right now where I live I don't have the room for a record player. I have been looking for a record store relatively close to the inland empire that meets my cd needs. Rhino records is my answer. They have a wide selection of music. Although, I didn't find The XX cd, I was looking for. I still walked out with two cds. Their staff was extremely helpful. One employee actually tried convince me The XX on vinyl but he couldn't find it. He was very friendly. I will be coming back for more! read more

Once affiliated with the original Rhino Records in Los Angeles that begat the label of the same name, Claremont's outpost is now independently owned. It still provides a vast selection of indie releases, including vinyl and for decades has been a haven for music lovers in the smog layered inland empire. When I was working in this area, I used to stop by whenever feasible just to pick up publications from "civilization" like the LA Weekly and music zines of all sorts. If you don't wanna spend a whole paycheck there, I tend to start in the budget & used sections which can usually contain some unexpected gems. On my last visit I literally took home stacks of cheap CDs for a long road trip and spent less than $30. read more

Very friendly staff, their collection offers a good variety of vinyls and cds along with cassettes and what have you. It's clean and very organized. I really enjoy this place. Back when I use to buy CD's, I always went here - they have nearly every Punk CD imaginable!! Now that I have a son, he loves to go in here and buy toys!! However, they are insanely expensive, but you pay for the best. But I love buying vinyl here and it's one of the only paces in the IE where you can get them! Best place to get music in the Inland Empire period. It might even be the best in LA area besides amoeba (that i know of at least). The selection here is great and they have tons of used CD so that rules. They also have a nice selection of random quirky things and shirts. They also sell records which is nice if you have a record player. Also, they have an area with local announcements, local music and publications. This place just takes me back to my punk rock high school days and makes me wish I had Rhino around when I was young. read more

A cool family-owned record store. The CD and vinyl selection is good considering the store's size. The vinyl prices are okay, although I have seen some which made me wonder if there was a glitch with the price gun. The staff is quite friendly and knowledgeable. Went here a few weeks ago with a friend. Was really impressed with their selection of used & new CDs. Picked up a few Velvet Underground CDs I was missing. Also picked up some tablets for making bacon-flavored water and ALMOST bought a Jesus flashlight! Nice to see that they also have a fair amount of vinyl in here. read more

Heard about good things about this record shop; however, the staff creeped me out!! My review is for their customer service. Never had a poor expierence such as this in any record shop in So Cal. The selection seemed great, but due to the staff hawkishly following me around the store I wasnt able to explore the store fully or enjoy looking for CDs! With the two staff members following me around, they once did not offer help or atempt to be friendly. They where pretending to organize cds and directly place them right in front of the sections I was perusing!! Not sure if I'm going to come back. read more

UPDATE: The newer staff is less obnoxious. They do have some live performances on the weekends, I'm not sure it they did before. They still need to boost their business a little. I would like to see more classic and catalog CD's. I used to love shopping at Borders for all kinds of old (and reasonably priced) music on compact disc. Some of that stuff was music I never even heard of, therefore making them an impulse purchase. I try to stress the fact that people are not going to request something they have never heard of. Ahh Rhino Records. Almost the perfect record store. Fill yourself with nostalgia and surround yourself with hipsters. Rhino Records is a hot-spot for a true music enthusiast. Records as far as you can see and some rare collectibles to boot. Now, You may disagree with me, but Rhino loses one star because they aren't JUST for music lovers. They also cater to top 40 including Bieber, The Wanted, and One Direction. Names that, in a few years, won't even make sense. Because I'm forced to see the occasion promotion of these miserable "artist" I deduct one star. But Rhino here in Claremont is a virtual landmark in the city and if you're a fan of Vinyl Records, Rhino Records is a great shop. Fan of Rock myself, I was still able to find the latest Dubstep artist my wife enjoys as an impromptu gift. Needless to say - she loved it. After pondering this review and deciding what rating I should give Rhino, I finally decided that my personal music elitism should not influence the fact that Rhino is a decent place to go for music! Although their vinyl selection isn't HUGE, I've found some gems here. Their classical records are top notch and super reasonably priced. They used to have a huge used CD collection but now have condensed them into the regular CD section... sad. Dangerously hip with flavors of established antiestablishment traditionalism, this is a place that cares seriously about music and pop culture, is serious about its selection and intense in its offerings. There is a fine selection of used and new CDs with a fine selection of Vinyl and DVDs for sale, with a selection of interesting and quirky books, underground publications and toys. While prices may be high compared to a few used CD stores, very often I've found things here that I could not find anywhere else, even online. CD and record players are freely available and the staff do encourage you to listen as you wish. That being said, if you come in with a specific album in mind for purchase it may or may not be present. This is a store I've often had better luck while browsing for things I didn't know I wanted rather than deliberately searching for particular rare albums or genres. This is a fun place to hang out for a while, browse, learn about new music you haven't really thought about or heard of, and look about the oddities while talking to staff. The vibe makes the place worth spending a bit of time at and the location and free parking makes for easy access. A fun place to spend a few hours, and perhaps find something new or unusual or fun. read more

You can't have a better easy going record store EVER! With a huge selection of cd's, vinyl, dvds, movies books, funny crap and more. This place could carefully care for music die hards to the casual listener. The staff is not full of indie kids like I expected. We have some loving music from PUNK, HIP HOP, INDIE, DUBSTEP and even a top 20 type but the greatest thing is that neither of them judge anyone. They all understand LOVE FOR MUSIC and that's gold to me when it comes to this particular record store. This store gets raided a lot for not having everthing (most of the time they do but there are instances)which I find unfair! Cause if you just ask. a lot of times they are friendly enough to ask if you want them to order it for you! WOW...(I know). If you are not willing to travel to hollywood's AMOEBA (the god of record stores) this place is more than satisfactory. read more

Seems everyone knows the name. They take the time to put ads in the right places, hold events and live music, and one way or another (not sure how everything works) run a record label that puts out compilations, among other things. It's taking all that into consideration that I give the place 4 out of 5. What holds it back is the lack of used inventory, and what little there is to choose from is priced higher than usual, and is mixed randomly amongst all the other new titles. The prices on sealed titles are generally fair, so for those looking for 180 gram audiophile copies of this and that, you'll probably find it here. Store has a limited selection of entry level turntables and accessories for sale, and is in a nice part of the Claremont Village, has just enough parking for a weekend, and none of the staff are unapproachable. I wound up just before throwing in the towel finding two Willie Nelson used albums I hadn't seen before for $5/ea, both of which had outer jackets, the jackets themselves were in great shape, and the vinyl was clean. Once I get it through the Spin Clean I will see how I did. Just goes to show slow and steady wins the race again. Going on Record Store Day was pretty exciting, they weren't hurting for business. read more

As indie record shops go, this is one of the best. I have been coming here (either location) since Jr. High and the store has always had a great variety of music. I have less money now that I am a grownup so I appreciate that they sell used CD's. You can listen to the used CD's before purchasing to make sure that the previous owner took good care of them. They also, occasionally, get albums before the official release dates. I do miss the Kiss dolls hanging from the ceiling and the "Jet Red" albums that came with the t-shirts. I love this place. I don't visit Rhino as often as I like, but when I can make it down here I realize why I keep coming back. The service is great and the selection abundant. Echoing others, when I'm looking for something in particular they don't always have it on the shelves, but they'll order it with no problem. With that said, this is more of an impulse buy store. The current managers have made Rhino feel cheap and unfriendly. The manager's do nothing to make up for a bad experience. They try to cheat customers.
