When it first opened it was great with great service. After about a year I started noticing the meals were getting slightly smaller. Service was also getting slower. Had to start getting up to find a server. They weren't around as much. The food started to drop in quality, it just didn't taste the same. My wife noticed this also. I cold come up with many reason for this. Worst chef, cheaper labor. Don't know. I notice the black owner made the rounds at the tables but stopped coming around our table. First time to try their food so we got two samplers to have a variety. I would say the food is average but the value is great for the amount of food you get. It's not a place that I will crave and choose to eat at over other places. Chicken & sausage gumbo - was tasty and had a nice kick, the roux was a little blonde. I was on my way to Lafayette and there was a wreck on the highway so I stumbled on Rice & Roux by accident looking for some lunch. I had a cup of chicken and sausage gumbo and some boudin balls. It was all good. Hit the spot and did not break the bank. I looked on Yelp reading what others thought was tasty dishes to order here. I often rely on others to tip me off on what's a signature dish in a restaurant that I want to eat at. I read one review that was just idiotic. Saying this place was not Cajun food because some hired help in the kitchen was not born and raised in Louisiana. Seriously! I guess if I go home and cook tacos it's not considered Mexican food because I'm not from Mexico!!! SMH Like it's too hard to throw some meat in a corn tortilla therefore it's not authentic Mexican. Bland red beans & rice. It was missing the carefully layered seasoning and had very little "gravy." Boudin link was average. Sweet tea's good. Potato salad was intetestong but good: has potato salad taste with mashed potato texture. Nobody was at the counter the first time i walked in. I stepped out to check for a friend, then walked back in. Was met at counter by a young man who was polite, but didn't offer anything above the bare minimum in service. As soon as i finished the order, he disappeared. The cook/food prep person came out to check on my dressing choice (dressing for salad came in ketchup -like packets), and then brought my food out. She very sweetly offered to grab a 2nd plate for my daughter (not necessary -- she wasn't interested in trying the food here this time). The only other time i saw anyone was when a third young lady came out of kitchen area dragging something that could easily have been picked up. (As we drove off we saw it was one of the signs businesses wave out by the road to entice patrons.) I also didn't appreciate the "nigger, please!" I heard in the back kitchen area. I don't care what race a person happens to be ... if we're going to eradicate racism, everyone must stop using such slurs! Overall : too pricey for the low-quality taste, but plenty of food served. ($11.50 for red beans served over white rice, a boudin link, an ice-cream scoop size serving of potato salad, a very small serving of green salad, and sweet tea.) ***** NOTE: Today (8/2/2011), I received a very lovely note from the owner of Rice & Roux, apologizing for the substandard experience I had at their restaurant. What a great find! The food was superb and plentiful, and the customer service was above and beyond fantastic. A friend of mine chose Rice & Roux for our lunch date, and what great taste she has! She made some recommendations on what we could order to share, but there were too many yummy options, and I had to try to Pastalaya. I paid for both of us for lunch, and I think the bill was only $16 with huge portions. Mine was a cup of seafood gumbo (delish), 2 crawfish pies (yummy but I think I'll try the boudin next time as was another option), a small side salad, a melt in your mouth yeast roll, and a plentiful portion of chicken and sausage pastalaya. If you're a Cajun food fan and need something quick, then this is the place. The service was truly excellent as they were friendly taking orders at the cash registers but also came around to our table twice to ask how everything was (which seems to never happen at non-table served restaurants). They had a decent crowd in there too, not surprised since I know now how good the food is, how speedy the service is, and how reasonably priced they are. They also offer some great deals on take out, including catering/tailgating sized packages, so I will have to return for that as well. I was looking forward to eating here. It's a convenient location and the menu looked yummy. Unfortunately, it wasn't good. First, all food is served in to-go containers. When I order takeout, I always put my food on plates. But, it wouldn't bother me if the food was delicious. I ordered the Tuesday lunch special, lasagna and 2 sides for $7 something. It tasted like bad elementary school cafeteria food. The lasagna was tasteless and the texture was mushy. It was a generous size serving but not even in the same league as frozen Stouffer's lasagna, much less from a restaurant. The corn side was lukewarm corn from a can. The salad side was plain iceberg lettuce with a few carrot shreds from a bag. The side bread was a small cold roll. My guess is that Gordon Ramsey would have a fit in their kitchen since it tastes like they are just buying and serving pre made food. My colleague got one of the Cajun combos. They messed up the order, but fixed it cheerfully. Her food was a bit better than mine. She said it was a bit bland and the jambalaya was greasy. I gave it 2 stars instead of one because the place was clean and the service was cheerful. read more

You will find they offer great tasting authentic Cajun dishes, almost as good as my grandmother's cooking. (Sorry but no one has beaten her cooking yet!) The gumbo, jambalaya, beans, boudin and pies are delicious and consistently cooked to perfection and the seasoning is on point. I am always impressed with the portion sizes and prices are reasonable. The atmosphere is very casual. My only negative comment I can make is this is the only location. Hoping they will make their way a tad farther south! read more

This is my first visit. I ordered the Shrimp and Crab gumbo, a piece of cornbread and a small salad. The salad was served in a to-go container which surprised me but they don't skimp on the serving. They serve a sweet cornbread and I personally I didn't think the taste paired well with the gumbo but it was still good. Service was really quick and that's always great. The restaurant is in a strip mall and from the exterior you really can't tell what to expect of the cuisine. Fortunately the gumbo was better than I anticipated. Let's be honest, if you were born and raised in Louisiana, you're a major critic when it comes to 'Cajun' food. That said, Rice and Roux is an above average fill in when you can't whip up your own pot of gumbo. In other words, it quenches the craving, but don't expect high end New Orleans type cuisine. I've had the gumbo, jambalaya, white beans and potato salad. All were good and the service is great. Young staff, but all are very pleasant. I used to travel to BR quite a bit on business and always sought out the local places because of the great flavor. We were driving from Florida to Texas and though that we'd give this place a shot as it was right around the corner from the place we were staying at. I wish we had driven a little further. We got the Seafood Gumbo which was essentially a soup with very little meat and the Chicken and Sausage Jambalaya that was mostly dry rice. We could not find a trace of vegetable in either dish and both had a bland muddy flavor to them. The only thing that had even a remotely decent taste to it was the sausage in the Jambalaya. If you're looking for authentic Cajun, keep on moving. This stuff is at the same level as Golden Corral or a Junior High cafeteria in Des Moines, Iowa. read more

I ordered a combination plate of seafood gumbo, boudin, jambalaya and white beans through Major Menus to be delivered Downtown. Of these, only the jambalaya was edible. Gumbo was starchy and smelled of uncooked roux and not at all like a seafood gumbo (there were some overcooked shrimps there though). Nice place to stop for a quick bite to eat while passing through Baton Rouge. Very casual dining. Enough food that everyone in our party had to throw away food as we have nowhere to store it. ordered Food for Catering for a Wedding 2 weeks out. Make 1 adjustment on time a week later and called the day prior to confirm. The day of the wedding I called 30 min prior to delivery and they did not have my ticket and did not know they had food coming out to me. This is the reason for the low score as they should have had my order ready and delivered on time without me calling them. Good thing I did otherwise there would not have been any food. Good news is they somewhat recovered. They were 2 1/2 hours late from the delivery time and we did have over 50 people waiting (some left) The staff worked diligently to correct their mistake. Food was still hot and tasted good. The driver even stated he talked to me the day prior and confirmed but did not know what went wrong. I would note to the company, as a good gesture to refund a portion of the money (possibly the prepaid $40 buck tip) as a sign of good will. probably not going to happen but who knows. Recommend the food but you need to call early the day to avert a possible tragedy. read more

We tried the Jambalaya, Chicken and Sausage Gumbo sampler #3 that came with Red Beans and Rice, a roll, and a side- we chose green beans. All were really tasty, and we loved that all the chicken was juicy dark meat pieces. Gumbo was a nice rich gravy but not heavy, and nothing was particularly spicy- great for me since I can't take much heat, but plenty of hot sauce on hand for my boyfriend. Also had the Fried Boudilaya(?) Balls which were delicious and not overly greasy. We went here after having driven over 20 hrs evacuating from Hurricane Irma, and this absolutely hit the spot and felt like the home cooking we've been missing! Don't waste your money here! Especially if you like SEASONED and HOT food. I ordered the fried fish with two sides, which were potato salad and a garden salad. Sounds simple right? That's what I thought. It came out and my fish was barely cooked. It was soggy and wet, not even a little bit fried. I asked if they could fry it a little longer and it took 20+ minutes for the new fish to come out (the restaurant wasn't even busy). The potato salad is like cold mashed potatoes put into a mound. The "garden salad" was soggy and dirty, with nothing but romaine lettuce. Everything was plain and terrible. Absolutely no culture and respect for the food. I was very disaappointed. read more
