Rice on a burger?!? What kind of sorcery is this, you might ask? Well, let me tell you, friends: whoever thought of making burger buns out of rice actually took the time to make the idea worthwhile. And it works! One day at work, a Rice Burger food truck decided to hunker down nearby for a couple of hours so a few curious friends and I decided to pop by. Rice Burger is a Japanese take on a Western classic, so if you're like me - a sushi/rice-lover and a burger-lover, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the flavours and textures that hit your mouth once you sink your teeth into it. For about $10.00, I got a chicken katsu burger with a side of chicken karaage/popcorn chicken. The burger overall was messy to eat, but what good burger isn't! The size of the chicken was great - didn't feel cheap - and was fried perfectly on the outside while being tender and moist on the inside. The basic burger toppings which were lettuce and a tomato slice were accompanied nicely by a sweet Japanese mayo and also some kind of teriyaki sauce which gave a nice kick. What I was most impressed with was that the rice didn't fall apart at all! I was able to eat the entire burger without losing it in my hands so I appreciated that a lot. Don't get me wrong, though, it's a messy one! One thing I didn't like about the meal was the portion size of it. I'm a big guy, so naturally more food is better for me when I sit down and expect to make a meal out of one purchase and not have to go back up for seconds (which means spending more money). I finished my meal feeling about 75% full so expect to not be completely full if you are only going to get one burger. I could easily eat two of them and that would be spot on! Also, the chicken karaage was decently portioned, however I felt like the chicken was a bit bland despite being perfectly prepared and fried. Been trying to find the time to stop by here for some time now. Today be that day. Since working in the area dropped by for lunch. Ordered the farmhouse. Combo'd up for a total bill of 13. First looks. Cute size burger rice buns about the size of a hockey puck. The meet was portioned well. The sushi rice bun could use some kind of season to give it a little flavor or the meats need to be seasoned a little more. Personally I like the concept and it was a decent meal but needed to stand out a little more in season to build a repeat customer in me. Other than the service was friendly. The place needs a washroom of sorts for people to use. If you gonna have a set down section no matter how small there should be a washroom. If not then take out the sit down. Give it a try. I'm on the fence on this one... I've been here a couple of times and the food was ok. The overall serving size was decent, as was the taste. If you haven't been here, you might think it's Japanese food but it is not. It's their version of certain Japanese dishes, or their take on Mos Burger (fast food chain in Japan). The actual rice buns were dense, borderline hard. The popcorn chicken was tasty but pretty small, which might have been intentional, like literally the size of popcorn. Cleanliness is spotty - you don't get that feeling of "oh this place is clean" when you walk in and although they had covid protocol posters, it was all rendered useless by the free-for-all mound of plastic cutlery at the counter where anyone can just dig through. read more

What a fantastic concept. Well done Rice Burger! The idea to use crispy rice as buns to a burger is absolutely genius. My friend has actually told me about this place a while back and ever since I've tried it I find myself coming back. The "Chicken Katsu Burger" is very well done. The chicken was made with a fairly thin batter but it is SO crispy on the outside but the inside is so juicy and tender which is a perfect balance. The burger also includes lettuce, tomato, and some sauces. I do recommend asking for extra sauce because the rice patties do seem to soak up a lot of it. The rice patty was definitely my favourite part of the burger. It was so crispy and still kept his shape after I took a bite out of it. The fragrance of the rice combined with the succulent chicken meat alongside the crispy lettuce and sweet tomato was like an explosion of flavours in my mouth. My friend ordered their "Prawn Tempura" and she enjoyed herself thoroughly. The prawns were fried to perfection with a drizzle of the sauce. Staff were friendly and the wait is pretty short. The capacity of the restaurant is on the smaller end so I recommend waiting outside. Overall, really good food. Would definitely go again! read more

Out of all the places I ate while in Vancouver, this one was by far my favorite!! It doesn't look too fancy or anything from the outside. BUT the food is incredible. Our family got the picnic pack, for a picnic. It was our first time ordering, and we didn't realize how unsuitable for a picnic it was, with 2 youngish kids. Messy and drippy! By the time we took the food out of the bag, the smaller inner bags were all wet and greasy, despite the little cardboard boxes they were in. We tried the beef and the farmhouse. We preferred just the all-beef, because the chicken katsu was too greasy. We got a free order of the chicken pieces for ordering more than $10 on a Sunday, and it was a nice surprise, but it was oozing grease by the time we got to eat it. The kids liked the fries; it was so-so for me. The order was easy to do online, and they were ready when we came to pick it up. The online form should have a place to indicate what time you want to pick up; as it is, you have to enter it in the notes field, which they may or may not read! Awesome twist on your classic burger. Love how the rice bun holds together and is nicely torched for some toasty flavour. We tried the spicy chicken Katsu burger, the beef yakiniku which was nice and shredded instead of a beef patty, and the Korean spiced pork. I loved the chicken katsu, it had great crunch and flavour. Ordered off DoorDash. Burgers come in tiny trays that are inadequate to hold the amount of sauce given. However, the burgers are a good value and one is completely filling. They should warn you that the 4 burger meal deal is NOT meant for 2 people. Popcorn chicken tastes similar to Phnom Penh's chicken wings minus the lemon sauce. Dope concept. The concept originated from Japan according to their website. It exploded in popularity across Asia as an alternative to the hamburger we all know of. I wouldn't expect this food stop to be in this part of Vancouver in W 10th area so that was a nice surprise. The owners of this place, I'm telling you have some of the best energy and enthusiasm for their customers. Cracking some jokes to educating and explaining the ways to eat the rice burger. Bite turn and rotate. Repeat. Anyway, the food was awesome. I had the Spicy Chicken Katsu. Juicy. Then when I tried my friend's Korean Spicy Pork oh man drool. Then I saw my other friend's Spam Masubi omg. Also had the Kimchi Fries which I could put up there competing w a poutine, not matching it, but if I wanted an alternative for fries I'd have this for sure. I've been going here for a long time and have always been satisfied with the food. Back then it was $5-$6 or so for a chicken katsu and $4-$5 for a popcorn chicken and both were very delicious. After returning to Vancouver after vacation, I stopped by and bought my usual chicken katsu and was very disappointed. The chicken recipe has changed and tastes like greasy KFC now. The chicken was also basically all batter and I couldn't even taste the chicken. On top of that, the chicken was very thin, basically the width of a pencil at most parts. The rice was undercooked and wayyyyy thicker than before which resulted in even less flavour from the chicken. The price has also grown to $8 and popcorn chicken to around $7 which I believe is way too high for what they are serving. Not worth the money. read more

Had the farmhouse burger for $8.50. first off the rice "buns" are pretty small around the size of a hockey puck so it gives an impression of a pretty small burger considering the price tag. The meats were all done really well and I commend them for that, they packed in as much meat as they could on such a small bun. The big issue is that the buns were lukewarm and stiff despite the grill marks. I'm guessing they keep the rice buns in the fridge to solidify the shape when they heat them up on the stove but in this case the buns werent heated properly and combined with the fact that they were using sushi rice it made it crumbly when cold. On a previous delivery order I ordered the popcorn chicken which had a lot of fried chicken oil bits which were basically fried lumps of fat. given that it was $5.50 for an order the size of a smartphone, that was pretty disappointing. If they can fix these issues (a larger rice bun heated properly, and larger and less gristle portions for the popcorn chicken) I'll be happy to give them a 5 star for fitting in such a niche only competed for by Kobob Burger near Terminal Skytrain Station. read more

Finally got to try this place near UBC (take the 14 and it is just around the corner). I got the beef yakiniku combo (~$12 not bad) while my friend got the spicy chicken katsu combo. The beef was extremely well seasoned and the chef wasn't skimpy with the meat at all. The rice "bun" was lightly toasted and gave a bit of a crunch that you would expect (contained a leaf of lettuce, a slice of tomato, a slice of onions, seasoned beef, and sesame on the toasted rice bun). The fries were perfectly fried as they came out crunchy and lightly seasoned. The "bun" fell apart partway through and I used a pair of chopsticks to eat it (like a true Asian I know ; even more Asian, I had chopsticks with me ). I would not recommend this place to vegetarians as they do not serve vegetarian options (although if you asked, they probably could just sell you the rice bun). The next time I come here, I would likely order more menu items such as popcorn chicken, kimchi fries, and the farmhouse (chicken-beef-pork) combo. Rice Burger also had less of a selection than I thought they would have, but sometimes simple is better! This place seemed to be very popular as they do delivery and catering. The seating area only has 2 tables (can be separated into 4 tables) and a window seating area, would probably only fit about 16 people maximum so don't go in a large group. read more

Food was acceptable. We got the beef yakiniku, spicy chicken katsu, and I ate the spam musubi. The musubi would have been better if they incorporated some nori. They didnt have cheese sauce as advertised on the menu. That annoys me when things on the menu aren't available. The place was a little bit dirty. Dont look in the plastic bin where they pile the ketchup and plastic utensils....the floor was only slightly more clean. I don't want to know how they keep the kitchen. read more

I would go like 3.5 if I could. It's pretty good and definitely worth trying at least once. The staff is nice and it's certainly a cool concept. We walked into Rice Burger expecting to eat some sort of meat on rice patties. That's exactly what happened... but it was more than that. First and foremost we were welcomed into the friendly non-imposing kitsilano establishment by the nicest most enthusiastic man ever named Jackson. Not only did he explain the menu to us - he full on introduced us to every item as if we were about to become best friends for life with these rice burgers. This man infused the rice burgers with so much character before we received them that I swear it made them taste better than they would have without such a thorough introduction. We arrived as a group of four and we indulged in the picnic pack which allowed us to pick 4 burgers (aside from the farmhouse burger) and get an order of kimchi fries and popcorn chicken. Between the four of us we tried the beef, kimchi pork, chicken and the spicy chicken. We all enjoyed our food thoroughly. Imagine a dish of tasty teryaki meat and rice but in handheld form held supported with the perfectly size dixie tray to catch any slipping sauciness. The food experience was unique and the customer service was exceptional. One burger is perfect for a snack, but you'd definitely want two if you're decidedly hungry (or if you just want double the deliciousness in your life).
