Mainly doing 5 stars instead of 4 because the reviews are unreasonably low. I've been ordering from Rice House for several years now. Not only are they kind and have good service, but the food is solid and the value is great. I usually get their lunch specials, I have tried 6-8 different dishes off there and it's always flavorful and fresh. My mom really likes the house appetizer sampler. We normally get it delivered using TapThru when the weather is very cold. The delivery is prompt--everything is extremely neat and they make sure nothing is missed. I'm glad we have this business close to our home because it makes life a lot easier when you just want some reliable Chinese-American food--no frills, just tasty. read more

I admit, we've driven by this place hundreds of times and never went in because I'm skeptical of all Chinese food restaurants. Recently a neighbor told us how good the sushi was, so we ventured in last night. My husband had a three roll platter and he loved it, I just had a California roll because I wasn't very hungry. Wow, it was good, and the presentation was beautiful. The server was very nice and was working hard accommodate all guests in a timely manner. I stopped in for takeout. I ordered crab Rangoon and Princess Shrimp. They were pretty busy with orders. One call in order was huge. A lady had her order in before I got there. It took them quite a while to finish her small order. She left and about 5 minutes later, one of the ladies shot out of the kitchen and ran into the parking lot holding a cellophane bag of food (like the lady was just hanging out in the parking lot for 5 minutes). A few minutes later, that lady returned holding a bag of food that was obviously wrong and they gave her the items that had now been sitting around for about 10 minutes. Yum? They then placed the bag of food she returned into the phone order bag. Okay. Stop. What? This lady actually drove away with this food, dug around in it enough to realize it was wrong. Possibly licked it or rubbed it on her hiney and you are just going to put that in someone else's bag especially 10 minutes later? Gross. Gross. Gross. It took all of my energy to not run up to the person who picked up that order and tell them what happened, but I sat in silence only shaking my head with the shame they should have felt. Well, finally my food got ready so I headed home. Hmmm. I kind of wish they'd sent my food home with someone else because it was pretty BLEH. The food itself was ok, nothing special. The attitude of the staff killed it for me. I ordered carryout and headed to the restaurant, about 10 minutes away. When I got there, the woman at the counter berated me for not answering my phone when she called. Like many people, I have my phone set to send unknown numbers directly to voicemail (spam calls in 2019 are a real issue) and my voicemail message states that fact, urging you to leave a message that I do get notifications for. I don't know why she needed to call me (5 times in 90 seconds), when I asked I was ignored and handed my food. I think the bulk of the reviews here seem accurate, the food is pretty middle of the road but there are equal or better options every few blocks down 87th street. Sadly, the poor customer service at this restaurant makes it so DO NOT recommend this place. Tonight they failed to put part of our order in the bag and did not honor their coupon about getting an order of crab rangoon when you order more than $30. They offered no real apology for having to make a second trip to get the rest of the order other than offering a credit if I didn't want to come get it. Then they said that they chose to put egg rolls in my order (coupon if you order more than $25) instead of the crab rangoon. The woman who owns it is the RUDEST woman and server. If they didn't do the bulk of their business in to go, they would be out of business! Wish I could give this place negative stars! I've been here 3 or 4 times thinking "Oh maybe they will have stepped up their game, I mean they are still open so it can't be that bad right?...." WRONG! This place is disgusting and not worth $7.99 for lunch. I will describe today's visit: My 7 year old daughter always wants to go to buffets, so she can pick and eat like a bird at a wide variety of foods instead of just one. So I gave in a decided to give Rice House one more shot. Walked in the (broken) door, that tried to shut on us and had to shove open, to see a newborn infant laying on blankets in a booth, near the front door, with no one nearby. I'm assuming the baby was an employee's because later she went and sat across from it. The seating was very confusing she just said "menu or buffet" and we waited to be told where to sit and she just kind of waves her hand. We chose a booth and heard "drinks?", as another reviewer said. I ordered a hot tea (which was a pot that she filled with hot water from a coffee pot and a tea bag hanging over the side) and had to ask for some ice water to go with it. The guy working there followed us around the buffet and then asked me how old my daughter was. Pretty sure that could have waited until we paid right? The food.....ugh I could go on for paragraphs about how old, slimy and dried up everything was but I will spare you. It was worse than the worst Chinese buffet I've eaten at. Cold, stale, bland, you name a bad adjective and it applies. My daughter wouldn't even eat the plain lo mein noodles. She said they were gross. The staff were shouting through the kitchen at each other in their native language the entire time we were there, not even stopping to check people out at the register. They just kept chit chatting as he was ringing people up. I immediately decided that it was time for us to just pay and go. I was sure we'd done enough damage to our guts already. The place is dirty and you can tell they are getting by as cheap as they can. One thin paper napkin per person with no extras anywhere at a buffet? Avoid at all costs! Took me less than 45 mins after eating for my guts to say "Nope!" Unless you have Iron guts avoid the potential food poisoning and go somewhere, anywhere else. read more

Came across this restaurant yesterday after unsucessfully going to the Lucky Wok Buffet but they were closed. When I first walked in I was not greeted but just told to sit down. It was just me and my 18 mo. old and I told them I would like the Buffet. The buffet was small and over half the food was cold and the chicken dishes were cold, dry, and chewy. The watermelon (only fruit available) was sour....eeew! I made one plate for my child and she ate less than a whole plate but throughout dinner they kept asking me how old she was. After telling them 3 times that she was 1.5 yrs. old they proceeded to tell me she was 2 and could not eat for free. When I let them know she was not 2 and that their menu says under 2 free, they said they needed to see ID. When the state of KS starts issuing ID's to toddlers someone please let me know... Anyway I finally argued my way out of paying, had she eaten more than a plate of food I might have just gone ahead and paid but this food was not even worth the $10 I had to pay. The only reason this place gets a 1 star is because the salt and pepper shrimp was pretty good. Bottom Line....I would never recommend this place to anyone. You are better off going to HyVee and getting some chinese! read more

Let me start off by saying, this is my first review. And I really wish it wasn't a bad one. But if I could give this place no stars, I totally would. We got to this restaurant at about 6:30. You know, typical dinner rush. The waitress was really rude, and forced us to sit at a booth without saying hi or anything. Just, 'drinks?'. She forgot to put ice in my friend's drink and neglected to keep our drinks filled at all while we were there. My friend had to get up and put ice in her drink herself, and I had to refill mine. While this chick filled everyone else's drink around us. Whatever. Besides the rude staff and drink ordeal, we then checked out the buffet. Everything looked old and goopy, like it had been sitting there since 4 pm. No steaming vessels and no hot food in them either. Already disappointing. Then we started eating. Ew. Our food was cold and tasted horrible. I've had better chinese food at a grocery store. Before we were even finished with our meal, our waitress came around and basically threw our ticket and two fortune cookies on our table. To top it all off, one of them didn't even have a fortune in it! Gah! I strongly discourage anyone to go to this place. If you're passing it and really hungry, keep driving and find something else. This is your basic, inexpensive and tasty Chinese place, located just east of Lackman on 87th. The interior is very small so many people opt for takeout because the food is prepared very quickly. Despite the presence of the loathed baby corn, my chicken in garlic sauce tasted great. The lunch special, at 4.95, included soupo and egg roll. Insanely cheap for the money. Hot and sour soup there is enjoyable, and not as sour as most other Chinese restaurants. It has delightful little bits of pork in it which was a nice flavorful touch. Fried rice is standard which I didn't realize when I visited. I hope you can ask for steamed rice instead. read more

I agree with the reviewer that said it is basic inexpensive Chinese food. It is better than the grocery store and fast. I have had good service every time I have been here. I always order the cook to order and it is fine. The egg rolls and orange chicken are good. The sesame chicken and orange beef are okay. The General Tso's chicken could use some more spice but it will do in a pinch. I haven't seen any food or health violations and the staff has been nice to me. Fast and efficient. read more

Honestly, this place is not as bad as some of the reviews I'm reading. My wife and I went in the evening, when the buffet wasn't going. Their buffet is for lunchtime Monday through Friday. Outside of that, much of their traffic appears to be in to-go orders. We stayed in. My wife got pork fried rice and I got honey chicken. We also got crab rangoon to start. Crab rangoon was a little crispy, but still good. My honey chicken was excellent. My wife did enjoy her pork fried rice. Zero issues at all. Good experience. Give this place a try and don't be afraid of the bad reviews. We will probably have it on our take-out list, which a lot of people seem to do. read more

I really enjoy the convenience and speed of Rice House. The food is great and so is the price. I suggest the chicken curry or general tso's chicken.
