I'd already had it bookmarked 'to try', so clearly I needed to check it out. Rice Roll Express is fairly low-frills, but that's not the point. You're here for hot, fresh, inexpensive food, and on that front, it definitely delivers. I'd never had a rice roll before, so this was a fun first experience. As your stereotypical SF-native white girl, I've eaten my way through a lot of different cuisines, but I'm also very aware when I've only scratched the surface of each. I ordered takeout during my lunch break. It wasn't especially fast, even though they weren't very busy, but the process was organized and it was easy to figure out how ordering worked. I went with the BBQ pork rice roll and added bean sprouts (you get one free add-in, like scallions, corn, bean sprouts, etc.). My biggest takeaway: don't skip the soy sauce. On its own, the rice roll was pretty mild, but once I poured on the adorable little chubby soy sauce container they include, the flavors really came alive. Texture-wise, it was definitely something new for me -- soft, silky, and a little slippery. I actually found it easier to eat after it had cooled for a few minutes and firmed up slightly. If I had one wish, it's that I'd have loved a touch more filling relative to the amount of rice roll. Overall, though, it's hard to complain about a hot, satisfying meal for around $6.
