I finally had the time to come try rice roll express for a quick lunch and I'm so sad I haven't gotten the rice rolls until now. We got the shrimp feast rice roll with bean sprouts and dry wonton noodles to share and between 2 people it was more than enough food. Loved the mix of fresh and dried shrimp in the rice rolls. It's so flavorful and the egg adds a nice texture and flavor as well. Definitely top your rice roll with plenty of their special soy sauce and chili oil. The dry wonton noodles were also great. I really enjoyed their shrimp wontons too but it's really their fresh rice rolls that bring people here. It can definitely get busy but ordering is fast and efficient and like many fast casual Chinese spots, table sharing is expected! Cash or Venmo only for payment.
Came here on a Tuesday for a slightly later lunch and there was still a bunch of people here! I can tell that social media is doing wonders on this establishment because I see a lot of tourists coming through to try these rice rolls. Self seating, so it's nice if you come with someone else to either save you a seat. There's also a "bar" like seating against the wall. You order and pay in cash & your number's called when it's complete. If you order more than one plate you get a try. All of the condiments are provided at the front aside from the Sriracha-which they have at every table. I wished I tried the Shrimp Feast instead, but I guess it means that I'll just have to return another time. I didn't hate the Rice Roll Express Roll, but it's not a favorite of mine I was just curious to try it. ~~Service: Good. Though I'm not sure if I was supposed to just tell them my optional topping for the Rice Roll Express Roll because I wasn't asked and I got cabbage. ~~Tips: Bring Cash! ~~Return: Yes.
The rolls are good but not quite the same as the dim sum ones. The flavor is good and the self serve sauce bar means you'll always have enough sauce. There are a lot of tables to eat at once you grab your food from the counter The only down side to this spot is that there isn't a label system. You don't know which roll is which If you are buying multiple orders with similar ingredients.
My wife and I stopped by Rice Roll Express and picked up two orders of their rice rolls: one special and one "shrimp feast". The rice rolls here are as good as they get. The rolls are thin, have a wonderful chewy texture, there's generous amounts of toppings in each, and there's a sauce bar inside -- with peanut sauce, chili oil, hoisin, and soy sauce, so you can control the exact flavor profile you're getting. After placing our order, we received our order quickly -- well within 10 minutes. There's plenty of seating indoors, but we opted to take our food to go. If you're a fan of Cantonese rice rolls, I cannot recommend Rice Roll Express enough. Cash only, and parking in the area is extremely difficult. You'll want to either take public transportation, or prepare to double park if you're coming with a car.
Started our food journey in SF here and did not disappoint. Had the special roll- you can pick your sauce. I prefer peanut and chili oil. Definitely delicious and filling. The rice rolls are perfectly chewy and had a good filling to outside ratio. I'm not a huge soup girl but I think the wonton soup was also stellar. The broth was light but the wontons have a lot of flavor. Big portions for a good price. Tip: they only take Venmo, Zelle and maybe cash
great portion and pricing by sf standards; first fresh rce noodle place i've been to here that offers a free topping addition! i chose corn during this first visit. lots of tourists and foot traffic coming in, but still space for my sister and i to sit on barstools by the window and not feel crowded. self-serve, you pay for and receive your meal at the register counter, and there is a sauce station there (peanut sauce, chili oil, soy sauce, etc). The rice noodles were not bad at all; filling portion was good. the noodle was not as smooth/silky as other fresh rice noodles i've had but taste was overall satisfying still. do recommend for an affordable, casual and fresh munchie stop
Rice rolls are my favorite part of dim sum, I brought my friends here and they had vegetarian options too! I'm so happy that everyone liked it, the secret is literally dosing this with the special soy sauce. They also have peanut sauce and chili oil Ordered the beef rice roll, veg rice roll with bean sprouts and green onions, black sesame soup, soy milk. Everything is authentic and I'll definitely be back my next sf trip to try the other yummy dishes ! Service was super quick. I paid in Zelle and they also accept Venmo but not card and I also don't carry cash. Might suggest you carry cash in Chinatown but fine without it.
I ordered through DoorDash to work. I've ordered one of their delux special one and add corn and the egg and added corn. I loved how thin the rice noodle was and soft! Super pro esp for delivery all their sauces comes individually wrapped Had the egg roll the next day for breakfast and it was still amazing!
I've always wanted to try this place as it specializes in rice rolls. Remember this place is cash only. Special rice roll (5/5): This comes with beef, pork, bbq pork, and egg. It gives you a variety of proteins to try. The rice roll was soft and silky. Just perfect. I really enjoyed the potions as most places are not generous with their portions. Overall I recommend this place if you want specialty rice rolls.
Rice rolls rock here. They specialize in rice rolls so stick with that and you will not be disappointed. The rice rolls are thin, stretchy and chewy. Steamed to perfection loved every bite. Service is fast and friendly. The wonton soup is good but not exceptional, like I said just get the rice rolls.
Rice rolls are one of my favorite things to eat! Got the #1 Rice Roll Special to try which included Beef, Pork, BBQ Pork, Egg and topped with scallions. Came out to exactly $10 which isn't too bad but one order definitely did not fill me up. May need to grab 2! After ordering, it took about 15ish minutes until they called my number. They have a number system on their wall showing what number is done and can be picked up, kind of like at the optical section of costco or fish section at Ranch 99 LOL. This location is in Chinatown on the main street and was crowded! Lots of locals and tourists. Nice to try if in the area but prob would not come back to Chinatown just for this since parking is difficult/expensive and just overall super crowded. TIP: BRING CASH as they do not take card. However they do take venmo/zelle.
Best rice rolls hands down! The # 1 is so flavorful! So much protein & I loved the egg in it! We also got the #4, which was the shrimp rolls- good but I wish more shrimp was added. I love that they have the condiments available to you to self serve and use right at the front. It's def packed so we got it to go and just sat on small chairs inside the shop! I love the feel and the system in the restaurant- makes me feel like we're actually in Asia! Def will keep coming back!
I always think that it is easier to do one thing well than to do everything average. This place does it all well, and their menu is very simple. Order at the counter, let them know whether you are dining in or getting togo food. They give you a receipt with a number on it and you watch the display to see when your food comes up. The seatingvis mostly table shared bar counter. They have a variety of sauces/condiments to add to your noodle dish 9mce it is ready. You clean your own area when done and continue your journey through Chinatown. The Shrimp Rice Roll with scallions was perfect. The rice noodles were so fresh and the shrimp were super tender. Everyone looked so happy slurping and shoveling their noodles to fill their bellies. I would definitely return to try some of the other rice rolls.

Very popular and busy place! Shared this with a good friend on our way to Ardbeg Day celebration in Little Italy and it was the perfect snack. The Rice roll special with scallion is very flavorful and filling! You can choose different sauces - sweet chili or their dark sweet sauce. You can also take it to go or eat indoors. This place has been blowing up all over social media and rightfully so. If you're a big fan of rice rolls or you grew up on them, this is the perfect spot. You can't really find that many cheap eats in this economy but here you'll never feel like you're breaking the bank. I will say with hyped up restaurants expect a longish wait but it'll be worth it trust. Pro tip: come with at least 2 people so that 1 person can reserve a seat while the other orders because finding somewhere to sit can feel like a battlefield read more
This is a Chinatown meal under $10 and totally worth the hype. It is super silky and full of shrimp / pork / egg. Be sure to add the various toppings and enjoy! There is lots of open style seating but it can get busy on weekends. Remember to bring CASH! read more

Rice Roll Express offers some of the yummiest and most affordable breakfast/lunch food in San Francisco. For less than $10, I ate a whole plate of rice rolls and I was so full at the end. The quantity they offer is big. We went in the afternoon on a weekend and they were pretty packed. You order at the counter and self-serve to find a seat. They only take cash and venmo. I go to dim sum and eat a lot of rice rolls growing up. The qualities to look for in rice rolls are: the translucency / thinness of the rice roll, the fillings, the bounciness of the rice roll. Rice Roll Express hits all that. Their rice rolls are so delicately thin and I could taste the freshness in the meat. The sauces are also amazing. They give you a lot of options for sauces from house soy sauce to peanut butter sauce to chili oil and more. read more

I'm so happy to have found this place. Finally, affordable, delicious, authentic Cantonese food. A plate of these rice rolls cost around 7.50 dollars total. Adding shrimp or an extra meat inside is only 2 dollars more. This is simply amazing pricing for the area. The taste of the food is fantastic, it's just the right amount, filling, and exceptionally yummy. I'll keep supporting this place as long as I'm in town! read more
Soooo thin and delicious! Their house soy sauce and sweet sauce is really good, very flavorful and elevates the rice noodles well! Sauces are at the front, at the counter and self service! It's not the smoothest/silkiest rice noodles I've had, but it is on the thin side and I love that they make it fresh as it comes out piping hot. Note that you may have to wait at least 5 minutes since they make it fresh! Friendly service as well. Would love to come back again and try other items on the menu! read more

Great spot for rice rolls! The setting is casual, but the rice rolls are tasty and reasonably priced. I got the rice roll express special, that comes with a mixture of meats and egg. The rice noodles themselves were super soft, and they had a decent amount of filling. The sauces were great on the rice rolls too. The seating is pretty limited, but ultimately we were able to grab some spots right before our order was ready. I really enjoyed the rice rolls here and would come back! Fast, simple, and delicious. Named aptly for its rice rolls, I tried BBQ Pork the first time and then got Beef my second visit. You get the option of a free vegetable added to your rice roll and I bounced back between beansprouts, corn or lettuce before settling on lettuce. The rice noodle is thin but sturdy. The house special soy sauce is amazing, leaning on the sweeter side. For takeout, they included a whole large packet of soy sauce which I thought would be too much but after drowning my entire plate with it, I realized it was just the perfect amount. One rice roll didn't look like a lot at first but I was actually quite full from it alone. Lots of seating inside, it's more communal seating as there is a long table that you might end up sharing with other people sitting in to eat. If you're paying in person, you order at the front and get a receipt and wait for your order number to be called to pick it up. These rice rolls were excellent. We actually tried another top-rated spot nearby first, and this place was noticeably better. The prices were reasonable, especially for the quality and portion size. There was plenty of seating inside, which was a nice surprise. Parking isn't great, but it's Chinatown, so there's that. What really stood out were the sauces options, peanut, soy sauce, etc. The rice noodles themselves were thin, super moist, and had a great texture. While in Chinatown, I had to try Rice Roll Express after seeing great reviews on Yelp and Instagram reels. It definitely lived up to the hype. I ordered the Shrimp and Roe Wonton Soup and the Signature Shrimp and Roe Wonton Noodle Soup with chili oil, and both were really good--flavorful and satisfying. Prices are very reasonable, and the wait for food was short. Just a heads-up that this spot is cash only. I'm already looking forward to coming back the next time I'm in San Francisco. read more
Whenever I have a medical appointment in FiDi and I come out with positive news about whatever, I reward myself with comfort food like corned beef hash...or jook if I can find a good one in Chinatown. I had never been here before, but I noticed on their menu, they serve one kind of jook amid quite a selection of Cantonese steamed rice rolls. The rice rolls are practically what everybody else ordered. First things first though, I ordered the $5.99 Large Pork & Preserved Egg Congee, which came topped with chopped green onion (Photo 7). The texture of the rice porridge was a tad on the watery side, but there were enough bits of pork and preserved egg to satisfy. I made room for their specialty and ordered the $6.91 BBQ Pork Rice Roll (Photo 10). I agree this is where they excel. I was expecting it to be more like a rolled crepe, but it was presented flat on a plate where the translucence of the steamed rice sheets allowed the pork and cabbage filling to be visibly appetizing. It was sliced up for easy consumption. The taste was silky with a slight chew, and a splash of hot sauce enhanced the porkiness of the flavor. I'd probably come back for the combo special rice roll next time. Located in Chinatown San Francisco. One of the few places that will take Venmo or cash. Most places are cash only. Long story, but I didn't have time to get cash, and didn't have ATM card. This is classic Cantonese breakfast place. They specialize in the rice rolls with beef or shrimp (there may have been other choices) and you get to choose the veggie to go with, which I suggest cilantro or green onion. Don't forget to add the special soy sauce, it's lighter and different flavor than the one you buy at the store. They also have jalapeño infused soy sauce, yum! If you eat inside, you will order at the counter, pay and wait for your number to be called. It took about 15 minutes for my food, but it was fresh and delicious. Beef rice rolls 10/10 best in California ! Won ton noodle soup 6/10 I have had better , it added cumin, also a little different but it works, you get 4 wontons Chili oil condiment has some Sichuan peppercorn, kind of interesting. I walked by this place so many times after tennis and it was always very busy. I never walked in until a friend suggested we stop by here for lunch! I love how diverse the clientele is. There are many Asian aunties and uncles, as well as local corporate workers and some tourists. Everyone craves reasonably-priced rice rolls and noodle plates! They're large portions and the price is so reasonable. They have other items besides rice rolls but those are in the name, so I'd say they're known for them! My friend and I both enjoyed #1 and #2 rice roll with egg, shrimp, and some beef. They were delicious and I can't wait to come back. Only problem is, I don't know if I'll try something new (which I want to do) or get more rice rolls which I know I love! read more

Decided to come back and take the hubs here when we had an afternoon going to our favorite shops in Chinatown. The rolls are freshly made but what I liked about them was that the noodles are so thin! Dim sum places have rice noodles that are thicker skinned but these are thin and light! You go to the counter and order the noodle roll then an automated voice calls out hour number when your order is ready. You can choose a veggie to put in your rolls and there's peanut or chili oil to put on the rolls, but the best really is the house special soy sauce. It seems to be a neighborhood spot for the locals with some tourists sprinkled in here and there. Pretty chill place but very hole in the wall. Fun place for a quick no nonsense bite. The other foods looked pretty good too and the prices are reasonable. Check it out! read more

Got the Rice Roll Special with Corn inside. I think it comes with Beef, BBQ pork, and Egg on the inside too. The food came in like 10-15 minutes after ordering. The rice rolls were super soft but I would've preferred if they weren't that soft since they broke too easily so the ingredients inside would spill out. This is just my personal preference but I'd prefer just the typical Beef Rice Roll next time I do come here rather than the Rice Roll Special which has too many different things inside for my liking. read more
Gotten deliveries from here only, but what we tried thus far surpassed any of our expectations. The wontons here are a bit different because they have this shrimp & roe wontons. Lots of flavor. They also have regular one with pork only which is good as well. The rice rolls are good with lovely individually packed branded sauce packets. Rice rolls were IMMACULATE! got the shrimp feast and it had shrimp, dried shrimp, egg and scallion and that combo was bussin! the condiments is what really makes it delicious, add the chili oil, jalapeño soy sauce and their house made peanut sauce, that soft and fluffy bite with everything makes you want you to finish your plate in 10 seconds. If I could, I would buy 2 or 3 plates and just eat it all in one sitting CASH ONLY so come prepared!! read more

They only accept cash and Venmo. I ordered special number 1, 9,21$ become 10$ cash, they asked me if I wanted garnish, green onion I got my receipt and they going to call my name when is done. After a while, I got my order.got home and eat. Even though the roll so thin I got egg, pork, and green onion. I prefer the rice roll from The next door GMB, they have roll with thicker and better bite and price too read more
San Francisco Chinatown has lots of restaurants which serve delicious food. I always walk by this place on Stockton street and I see it has a mix of tourists, locals and students enjoying their food. I never seen this place empty. There is always a line when I pass by and the seating seems like it is always taken up. I decided to go inside as I saw my opportunity to try after the lunch rush and went for Dunch ( Lunch and Dinner). Once I went to the register to put in my order I was given a receipt with a number. You can see digital numbers on the wall as you wait for your order number to be called similar to places in San Francisco like Molinari and Mitchell's. You will also hear throughout your inside dining experience an automated voice saying numbers to pick up their order. It sounded like a like an electronic bingo caller at a bingo hall I volunteered at in the past . I ordered the pork rolls and it was savory. The special soy sauce made all the difference and made the noodles delicious and moist. I also got the shrimp rolls which were tasty. You can taste the freshness and smoothness of the noodles. One of my favorite cheap and cheerful places to slurp some noodles in San Francisco. TLDR: Authentic style rice rolls tucked in SF Chinatown. No frills location where you order, pickup, and bus yourself. Bring cash! Food: We had 2 rice rolls (BBQ Pork, and Shrimp combo). The rice rolls came with a large portion and were well filled. The skin on the rice rolls was thin, bouncy, and very traditional. Each rice roll comes with one veggie (beansprouts, corn, green onion). Additional soy sauce and chili sauce are at the tables or can be added when you pickup your order. The wonton noodle was a large portion and the broth was decent and on the lighter side. Service: Don't expect great service. I'm really happy to see a local business doing so well. This place has definitely blown up on social media and I fear it does live up to the hype. You really can't beat such well-made rice rolls. | v i b e | Very casual. There seems to be a good mix of locals and others. You line up to order first. Once you order, you hope you find a seat at one of the busy tables. It helps coming with someone to save your spots while they call your number. Be prepared to be sharing at massive community tables! | f o o d | I usually don't order rice rolls because they're usually too soft or thick for my liking. These were soft and airy which is great when loaded up. Don't forget to dress the rolls up with the sauces and spice! I ordered the #1 rice roll express special and #2 shrimp feast. The rice roll to filling ratio was balanced. Both were delicious, but towards the end of the meal, I preferred the shrimp feast more. 2.5 stars rounded to 3. My friend raved about this place so my husband and I decided to stop by to try out their dessert last Sunday after a quick lunch at another restaurant nearby. Rice roll express is located on Stockton St which is in the heart of Chinatown so best to get there on foot or park your car at the nearby parking garages. We had no room left for their rice rolls so we got their black sesame paste instead. Restaurant was 60% full when we got there at 2:30 pm on Sunday so there wasn't much wait to order. Food arrived immediately since we only order the dessert. Table or bar counter seating. Everything is as basic as you can find in a Chinese restaurant so this would be a popular spot for a very quick bite. Black sesame paste was below average. Food temperature was good and portion size was generous for the cost but the taste was only average. There were quite a bit of clumps in the paste but overall, it is not too sweet. Pidan shourou porridge 10/10 Shrimp rice roll w/scallion 10/10 Beef rice roll w/scallion 10/10 Pick your own Veggie rice roll (cilantro corn) 10/10 The porridge was piping hot, perfect for a winter morning, pork and century egg not overcooked, kept shape. Was avoiding this because how good can rice rolls be for me to have a whole meal of it? But so glad I tried it because it was delicious! It can get crowded because of how popular it is but there are quite a bit of seats and also don't be afraid to sit next to strangers! Got the shrimp rice noodles and the combination, you also get to add one free topping and can get additional ones for an added price. The rice noodles were soft and chewy, they also make each one fresh to order. Stopped here for a quick bite between work sites. Been thinking of pork and preserved egg congee for a couple of weeks, so that's what I ordered. I was surprised it came in a cup, maybe 6 ounces worth? It was the small one, so I shouldn't have been surprised that it was really small. It was $3.95, I think. Anyway, it was pretty good. Nice and smooth but with a good amount of ground pork chunks and a fair amount of preserved egg. Flavorwise, it *did* need some soy sauce and white pepper and I wish I had some green onions and cilantro to throw in, but most places won't have that anyway; that's when homemade is best! Lots of soy sauce and other sauces available to "doctor up" the jook, so it was good. Satisfied my craving! Very casual place. You order at the counter and they give you a number. Located in Chinatown. Expect no parking, better to use public transportation. Came on a weekend lunch time. The place was packed. There was a line, but it moved quickly. Ordered the 五香牛腩頻 or Beef Brisket Noodle Soup for $9.91. The brisket was tender. Soup was a bit salty. For the rice rolls, we got the 蝦米腸粉 or Dried Shrimp Rice Roll for $6.45, 牛肉腸粉 or Beef Rice Roll for $6.91, and 叉燒腸粉 or BBQ Pork Rice Roll for $6.91. We were able to add one vegetable to the roll for free and we chose corn for all three rolls. We didn't like the 叉燒腸粉 or BBQ Pork Rice Roll as we felt the meat was too sweet. The other two rolls were alright. The chilly oil was delicious and went well with their soy sauce. Good place for cheap food. read more

Rice Roll Express has apparently been on my girlfriend's radar for years, so it was a must stop when we hit Chinatown during our staycation. It is a classic no frills spot. You have elderly Chinese folks eating side by side with young, dyed hair, college-aged kids. One of those rare places that brings everyone together because you just know the food is good. It was pretty packed for the lunch rush when we went. We waited in line for a bit and then a little longer for the food, but by the time it came out a seat had opened up for us. While it was not the cleanest place to dine in, it was definitely comfortable enough for a quick meal. I ordered the pork rice roll with scallion and my girlfriend got the egg rice roll with scallion, both coming in at $6.45 each, which is an absolutely insane price for how good they are. I am familiar with rice rolls from dim sum which are usually thicker and often filled with pork. These were paper thin, silky, and had such a clean, fresh rice flavor. We drenched them in their special house soy sauce that comes in both packets and bottles scattered around the dining area, plus some chili oil, and that was all they needed. Perfect. We devoured them in minutes. I say this a lot, but if your first thought after finishing is "should I go order more," then you know it's banging. And let me tell you, these rice rolls were absolutely banging. I could not get over the silky texture and the pork bits inside were juicy, savory, and fatty in the best way. It almost reminded me of the pork spare ribs you get in black bean sauce at dim sum. It was that good. This is genuinely a place I would come back to SF for just to have again.
