Their "spicy option" was a bit misleading... all it was is a drizzle of sriracha on top of the onigiri. I would have expected the filling to be incorporated with spice. Was very messy to eat. Fillings were kinda scarce on the inside. They add a dallop of the filling on top of the onigiri, which I'm guessing is to help distinguish which onigiri is which. But it just made it messier to eat. My stars are moreso for the service and their set up than the food. I was craving onigiri so stopped by here. I ordered the quarter which on their board says it's $15.50. I get my bill and it's $18. I'm like okay tax. Oh wait they charged me .50 for kbbq and for salmon, but I don't see anything on their menu that says some proteins have an upcharge. So I ask and the server points to the revolving screen behind him and I'm literally size 9 font at the very bottom with a darker brown background, it says "KBBQ is .50 more". Now here's the thing, I have no issue with paying an upcharge IF you're upfront about it. There are literally paper menus, a paper sign and the huge revolving screen in mostly white that doesn't say anything about it. It's just tricky marketing to put the upcharge words in tiny font and on a darker background so it's harder to see. Then after I sit down I'm like wait a minute, it doesn't say salmon is an upcharge. So I go ask and the server isn't sure what to do. I know .50 is a small amount, but at this point it's the principle of the matter. He ended up refunding myself and my friend for our salmon charge, but it's like come on guys let's get your act together. I wonder how many folks they have been up charging incorrectly and getting away with it. Anyways we got our food and the salmon and kbbq were good. Shrimp was not my favorite. I am writing an update very soon after my initial review because I received an email from contact@ricebunn.com, which is the email listed on Ricebunn's website. First of all - how did they get my email address when that info isn't listed publicly on Yelp? My initial thought is they must have seen my review and dug through their orders from yesterday, matched my name with my order info, and contacted me that way. You'll notice that they specify the exact time of my order in the email, too. A big yikes to go through so much trouble when Yelp messaging is a thing, if you ask me. And VERY concerning security-wise, at that. This has to be a breach of privacy, right? Not only did they find my email, but they addressed me by my full name (which is also not visible on Yelp!). They have my phone number too - who's to say they won't try calling people about low reviews next? Do NOT place an order online if you want to open yourself up to an experience like what I had. I don't think the intended use of customer order info is to write a salty email in response to a 3-star review talking about how difficult it was to eat onigiri the right way. I get that Ricebunn is fairly new, but the reality is that not everyone is going to like your food, and you can't make everyone happy. Taking the reviews too personally instead of using them as constructive criticism is a red flag for the ownership. Do they send emails like this to everyone who didn't leave a 5-star review? I was pretty neutral on the taste of the food and my only criticism was the craftsmanship behind the onigiri. I think both those points were pretty clear in my original review. If this is the way they interact with customers, there's definitely no way I'm coming back. At this point, it's not even about the food anymore. Going through all that for my contact info is weird enough in the first place; now I can't help but wonder if my payment info has been compromised too! Went to this place on a Monday night with a friend. Food didn't take too long, but it unfortunately was not what I was hoping for. Both the tuna and salmon were really fishy. I know canned fish often are, but these two were even passed that level in terms of taste and smell. Unfortunately I felt pretty sick all night, and I'm fairly sure it was because of those. First time trying it today. First of all the rice was extremely sad. The rice in the riceballs I had were dry, undercooked, clearly used no sushi vinegar, and fell apart super easily. I'm not even convinced they actually used sushi rice, if they did, they butchered it to the point of being unrecognizable. With rice being the flagship part of a riceball/onigiri, to call it disappointing is an understatement. I had the Onigiri Trio with 2 salmon and 1 shrimp. I was surprised to find that the shrimp was not in fact shrimp tempura which is commonly expected, but actual tiny shrimp pieces that were marinated in some kind of vinegar solution. The shrimp itself was just ok but a lot of them were not properly deveined. The salmon was too salty, and also overcooked and dry. All of them tasted like they were day old riceballs that had been left in the fridge uncovered overnight. The furikake also just tastes like what you could grab from a regular grocery store. There is nothing at all traditional about this store's offerings, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but because it tasted so bad it made it worse. Convenience store or Mitsuwa packaged onigiris taste better than this place by a mile. I really wanted to like this place because I LOVE onigiri. I even ate my meal through the filter of being extremely hungry and it still tasted bad. Would not recommend. Did not try the drinks. read more
