I came here to get my first two wisdom teeth extracted. During my consult, Dr. Schell seemed very knowledgeable and put me at ease, explaining everything in detail. That is the ONLY reason they get one star. The day of the surgery I felt that everyone was in a rush. The minute it was over I didn't even have a chance to come to completely and they were already kicking me out of the office. They gave me a prescription and a little card with post care instructions and I was on my way. Immediately after the numbness wore off I was in excruciating pain, I'm talking about level 10 pain and I consider myself to have a high tolerance for pain. The Vicodin wasn't working, icing it wasn't working it was just shooting pain through my jaw. My mom called them for me because all I could do was cry and lay down. They, as in whoever answered the phone, said it was normal and to just take more Vicodin as needed. I couldn't eat or hold anything down so the Vicodin just made me more sick. This lasted for 5 days and didn't get better until about the 6th or 7th day. We called the doctor about two more times but they just kept saying it was normal. Which it WASNT. My face looked like it had a three golf balls inside my cheek. No attempt or concern to explain or find out if there were any complications in the surgery NOTHING. I literally just waited the pain out for 6 or 7 days. This happened last summer, and the only reason I'm writing this now is because they honestly made me feel like I was crazy. Yesterday I had my other wisdom teeth pulled out at a different office and it was a TOTALLY different experience. This is my second day and although there's a little bit or pain which I can now see is a NORMAL pain, I know I wasn't crazy. DO NOT COME HERE. read more

Dr. Schell and his staff were wonderful to work with. I just had all four of my impacted wisdom teeth removed and I couldn't have had a more smooth procedure. Dr. Schell made me feel very comfortable and answered any and all questions I had. My recovery is going smooth, and I thought it was very nice of him to call and check up on me a few hours after the procedure and then again today to see how I was doing. If there were an option to give this place a negative star that's what it would deserve. The previous reviews must have been written by the staff or friends of them. My first consultation there was amazing. I explained my huge fear of dentists to them and how I had already had a horrible experience elsewhere getting 1 wisdom tooth out. They were so kind and I felt so relieved. Fast forward to the day of the procedure. They were pretty nasty from the beginning and the second I got into the actual chair it took a drastic change. They were beyond rude and treated me like an inconvenience to them. Upon them beginning to "put me out" it was clear they had NO IDEA what they were doing. I was wide awake and while telling them I was awake they kept going. I felt everything from the incisions to the yanking of the teeth. At points I was screaming at the top of my lungs to stop to please stop bc the pain was unbearable to which they didn't listen. They simply restrained me more. I have been put under many times, actually yearly I have something that need me to go under where I go into a room and the next thing I know it's over. This is NOT THE CASE HERE. They didn't pack my mouth with gauze after the surgery and they didn't tell me how to rinse my mouth out. Also both items that break protocol. They need to give it to you in a pamphlet as well as walk you through it. Also, I went in to have 3 teeth out, they left one in and when I asked why it wasn't bc I was awake or bc they had just restrained me and traumatized me therefore they didn't want to continue. He looked me dead in the face and said he left one in because "he ran out of time." Swear. To. God. He also started 20 min late bc he wasn't ready, I got there 15 min before my appointment. Any surgeon that tells you they ran out of time should 100% no longer be able to operate. How do you put someone under (or apparently here not), cut into them to do an extraction and then run out of time?!? Whatever happened to doing your job?? Today I knew something was wrong so I went to my friends husband who happens to be on the dental board of CA who took a look and said my mouth was entirely butchered by this so called Doctor. Besides already having hired an attorney to deal with the various laws broken I wanted to warn people. This place is horrible and not just that it look like it hasn't been cleaned in years. Beyond filthy. Save your money, your sanity and an incredibly traumatic experience and go literally anywhere else. read more

3 weeks after having my son, I found out I had a massive tooth infection and had to get my tooth removed either in 3 weeks or as soon as possible by an oral surgeon. I was referred to Dr. Schell. The pin got so unbearable that I called him at his emergency number. He called me within an hour around 10pm and said he would try to squeeze me in the following day but do not eat or drink for 6 hours. His assistant called me at 8am and said come in around 10:45am. I got in and he did the surgery. He had a full schedule and a class to teach, he worked through his lunch to get me out of my pain. I can't be more grateful for his time and commitment to his patients. I don't think i could have gone another day with the throbbing pain and he knew that so he made time for me. I had a bad experience with a wisdom tooth a couple of years ago and so was very, very apprehensive about having 2 taken out at once. Thankfully I found Dr Shell. From consultation through to now 2 months after surgery I am very pleased with the level of service given and work done. His team made it very easy and the recovery period for having 2 out was less than my previous experience with just 1. One tooth was expected to be a challenge, and it was, but I would never have known that by how I felt during and after the surgery. Don't be put off by the other reviews. I found the staff very pleasant and efficient and the Dr was kind and gracious in consultation and provided skilled dentistry in surgery. I have a sad history of soft teeth & bone loss & feel fortunate to have found Dr. Schell who has been treating my complex issues since October of 2008. Being in the medical profession I am very particular in researching and selecting the best care providers to obtain the best outcomes. I've had seven extractions & 5 implants, two requiring extra special care with complicated grafting & placement. Every procedure was fully explained with all possible options & outcomes, and Dr. Schell took the time to coordinate my care with my dentist & periodontist. I received detailed discharge instructions with each procedure & a follow up call that same evening from Dr. Schell to be sure I was doing OK. The office staff has always been friendly & efficient. I have been able to schedule my appointments in a timely manner, & they have handled all the insurance submissions letting me know in advance what was not covered. Excellent experience. I had a consultation for all four of my wisdom teeth to be extracted. The consultation was very informative and professional. I felt extremely comfortable making the arrangements to move forward with the procedure. My appointment was equally prefessional. The entire procedure was done under an hour. Although I am still recovering and slightly sore, I do not have any swelling or bruising. I was given clear instructions after the procedure. Kind, Caring & Skilled! Not able to find an oral maxillofacial surgeon in my PPO network to remove a fibroma (lump), I searched google and found Dr. Schell -- SO GLAD I did! Before I ever booked an appointment, he explained everything on the phone and when I met him, his kindness and compassion put me at ease -- he offered a fair cash price, performed the procedure with precision and care and followed up to see how I was doing. The other provider I consulted was afraid to remove the fibroma because the location in my mouth could result in possible disfigurement or a much thinner bottom lip and they're already thin -- but, it had to be removed since it was growing and interfering with my bite. The stitches fully disolved today. The lump is gone! My lips look the same -- and when I smile, there's no lump to be seen just the work of my orthodontist. Chelsea H commented his office is outdated. But, the chairs in the waiting room aren't important to me. I was greeted by friendly staff. Victoria, Robert and Delaney added to my positive experience. What a great experience from beginning to end. I would highly recommend Dr. Schell. He was so thorough on answering all our questions. Mind you my son just go back from a three week trip from travelling in Europe then the next day he was in surgery getting all four wisdom teeth removed. I was just so amazed on the care and followup the Doctor personally did and the staff. This is just the second day and my son is his happy positive preparing to start school in fall. Yes there was some pain but it was very minor he said on a scale it was a 2 with the standard ibuprofen. Also, he has not taken it since today he says it doesn't hurt enough to take it. Surgery was under an hour he is also following up with the antibiotics. I can't say enough about Dr. Schell being a Stellar doctor. My son and I were very confident in him just from the consultation. I could not recommend this oral surgeon enough he definitely made it as pain free as he could, I say this by seeing how my son bounced right back. *** Here is the extra bonus my oldest son had to have all of wisdom teeth pulled out 5 years ago, it was with a different doctor and was super expensive we have PPO dental but terrible coverage. All the dentists I have visited in the last 5-6 years have been recommending me to get my wisdom teeth removed as they were impacted. But I had been pushing it out as I was not in pain. Finally a couple of months back I started getting pain in one of my wisdom teeth and consulted with Dr. Schell. He did a thorough exam and recommended removal of all the wisdom teeth. His office was able to schedule a surgery for the next day since I was in pain. The surgery went well (got all my 4 wisdom teeth removed). I was in pain for 2-3 days as the Dr had warned me about given my age. But the healing was pretty fast and after 4 days I was able to start eating regular solids and was back to normal in 10 days. read more

Dr. Schell is one of the best and nicest doctors I have ever been to!! I had to have a minor procedure done. He took a lot of time explaining what is was and what needed to be done. When I went back to have the procedure done, he and his staff could not have been any more caring and friendly during the entire process. A few hours later he called to check in to see how I was feeling. It was nice to go to a doctor who took the time to talk to you in understandable terms and show such a kind bedside manner. I've been to the dentist my whole life I might as well be one . This office is way outdated I'm talking about 1960s look and feel . The equipment got the job done but is just as old as the building I was so damn nervous . The way they do things is very awkward . I'm a nurse and they had weird ways they did things . The staff is okay nothing to brag about when it comes to customer service . This place is overpriced . Had my wisdom teeth pulled yesterday. I was super nervous for the sedation since it was my first time, don't even remember it. The process was very smooth I was in and out. I had all 4 of them done at the same time. I am now going to him for a crown lengthening procedure. He doesn't normally do the crown lengthening but will do it. I got an implant! Dr. Schell is very professional and excellent at what he does! He first referred me to a periodontist who initially made the diagnosis, differing from my "former" dentist. I came to Dr. Schell, with my broken tooth, which could not be seen by x-ray. He thoroughly explained the process and probability of success. I had it extracted and ultimately got an implant. The location of the implant was very difficult. Due to bone loss, he carefully performed a bone graft. He is so calm, he made me calm. We worked through step by step, easily scheduling each with his very kind staff. Our 5 year old child had an extra tooth growing in the front of his mouth, that needed to come out. Our primary care dentist referred us to an oral surgeon ("Dentist A") to get it done. At that first appointment, "Dentist A" told us that our insurance was "out of network" for their practice, but "that's ok!". That initial consultation, where Dentist A looked at one X-Ray and at my kid's tooth, took 5 minutes, and cost $300, of which we paid $165 out of pocket. "Dentist A" recommended another follow up appointment where he would use general anesthesia to knock our kid out and extract the tooth, on an operating table. We scheduled the surgery, and they told us to be prepared to pay $1,300 out of pocket on the day of the surgery, of which $1,000 would be just for the anesthesia. Something didn't seem right to me. I contacted my insurance company (which I should have done in the first place!) and found Dr Schell, who was in our network, and scheduled another consultation with him. When we got to his office, Dr. Schell ushered us right in (no wait at all), looked at the tooth, and recommended administering a local anesthesia (novocaine), and performing the extraction immediately, right then and there. In his opinion, administering general anesthesia was unnecessary for this case, and no follow up appointment was necessary - he could just do it now. I said OK, and Dr. Schell performed the procedure, and we were out of there in 30 minutes! No general anesthesia, no $1,300 payment, the tooth is gone, and the entire out of pocket cost was $185.00 (and the entire cost was $400)! My kid definitely went through a little bit of pain from the novocaine shot, and cried a little, but he is totally fine now. I wish that I had considered other options before I needlessly paid the consultation fee of $165.00 to "Dentist A", but I am so, so glad that we found Dr. Schell, I am glad that we didn't put my kid child through the process and after effects of going under general anesthesia, to get his tooth out. With regards to Dr. Schell himself - he's a really good guy. Nice manner, explained everything he was going to do before he did it, completely put me at ease. My 5 year old was understandably freaked out for a few minutes as the procedure started, but Dr. Schell, and his very professional assistants put him at ease. Dr Schell is a very nice doctor but I have been very frustrated with the rude admin lady there over a 10 dollars overcharge that she refused to adjust/refund. It's not much but her overcharge fails my FSA claims and creates a lot of painful work to reconcile difference between insurance, FSA account and dr office. Had a very painful problem molar surgically extracted by Dr. Schell and his team yesterday morning. I have to say that it was the most pleasant dental and probably even medical experience I've ever had in the last 10 years. Dr. Schell and his staff were so kind, attentive, and answered my and my family's questions before the surgery to make sure we were comfortable. I have a sensitive stomach and can have a lot of anxiety during procedures, so instead of reducing the anesthesia to avoid nausea like my family asked him to, he checked in again once I was in the surgery room and we decided to use the same amount of anesthesia but more of the anti-nausea medication coupled with it. This attentiveness means a lot to me, because most doctors in any profession haven't cared enough to listen to what I need. He even joked with me about my tattoo of a Sanrio panda bear that looks like his rabbit - and it really does! Some history: I have a really lengthy track record with different dentists with this same tooth, from 1. Having the metal filling done when I was 18 because the tooth had a cavity, by a very rude dentist whose dental assistant cut my gums from front to back with the suction device because they weren't paying attention...and didn't really care that they'd cut me so badly. 2. Then another dentist replaced the original metal filling with a porcelain crown (which we paid cash for), then removed the porcelain crown because I was in pain when they didn't initially pay attention to my need for a root canal. Did the root canal and put a temp filling, and then the dentist moved out of town and I had to switch, then the temp filling fell out. 3. Then had a different dentist replace the porcelain crown but wouldn't fix my bite because she was upset that she was finishing another dentist's work and said I was wrong in telling her my bite was off - but my bite WAS off...so I had another dentist fix my bite. 4. Then the porcelain crown fell out in my sleep and was probably swallowed, and had another dentist put a temporary crown on it at the same time she did 10 other fillings with almost no novocaine when I only verbally consented to having "a few" fillings done...and then the temporary crown fell out. 5. Then the tooth progressively fell apart over a year and a half because I am so traumatized by this and other major acts of negligence by dentists...so eventually, 10 years after the very first filling, the tooth became infected and has been causing me headaches, and earaches, and it needed to be removed it with surgery. The moral of the story: Surgery sucks, and some doctors suck too, but if I ever needed to have such a procedure again, I will only ever go, and refer my friends or family, to Dr. Schell. read more

I took my wife to Dr. Schell for a three tooth extraction.The extraction went smoothly and took less than an hour (including the waiting time after). There was no waiting time before the procedure. My wife wasn't in any pain and the painkillers helped after. The staff was friendly, helpful and answered all questions we had. I went to Dr Schell at the recommendation of both my dentist & my doctor. I had a salavary gland that was swelling/painful. Bottom line: Would I go back to Dr Schell for another procedure? Absolutely Would I trust him to do work on my wife or son if needed? Absolutely 1. Staff and the doctor were professional and polite 2. Insurance coverage was verified 3. I was referred to MD Schell from my PCP dentist. Had an appt July 5,2016 for the removal of two impacted wisdom teeth. Firstly, he is thorough with his examinations and has an excellent bedside manner. Aside from doing a great job with my surgery he has been very thorough with his follow up care. He called me multiple times to see how I was doing (not all doctors do this ). His ancillary staff had excellent customer service! Victoria, was very knowledgable with the procedures and provided me with pre-op eduction way ahead of the time. I wanted to have my surgery and consult the same day given I have a baby at home and its difficult to get out to make each appointment, and they were both willing to work with me to make the surgery happen. I was going to have one tooth extracted from this office because it had cracked down to the root and needed to come out. I had one other tooth extracted somewhere else and my husband had two extractions somewhere else as well. That's three extractions between the two of us and none of the other doctors told us they wanted to put us to sleep like D.D.S. Schell told me he wanted to do. A simple extraction only requires the area to be numbed by novacaine and that's it. This doctor claimed it was the proper way to do it. By the way, he wanted an additional $350.00 for that besides the price of the extraction. I wrote this review for the people who don't know any better because they never had this done before. Took daughter here for wisdom teeth extractions. Small place, but nice and clean and easy to park. 1)Easy to make an appt. for the consultation. He's got a very nice demeanor too. 4)Day of appt. everything happened on schedule. Dad and I waited in the reception area for our girl. 5)She had 2 impacted and 2 reg. wisdom molars.....it could've been complicated but Dr. Schell extracts teeth for a living, this is pretty much all that he does all day. 6)Daughter came out, was a little groggy, we took her home and started icing the areas as Dr. Schell instructed and she went to sleep. Daughter is a high school Sr. and of course, her appearance is everything to her. We planned this during Spring Break and the swelling went down as planned. Her tooth sockets stayed nice and clean, no dry socket(this is a common problem you want to avoid). Dr. Schell was really great! I will definitely be bringing our younger daughter to him when the time is needed. Please don't try to save money by having a non-specialist(general dentist or orthodontist)do your extractions! When I was a teen, my orthodontist talked my parents into handling the extractions(erupted 12yr molars)and I will never forget it....it was a horrible, painful nightmare! Always go to an oral surgeon for this and don't be afraid to ask questions. Lastly, this is something that I should've taken care of a year ago for our daughter as she was plagued with headaches and her beautiful orthodontic work on her lower is messed up due to the wisdom teeth causing crowding. Dr. Schell is the BEST! He has the best 'chair-side' manner ever. I have to admit, i'm a bit afraid of going to Dentists. He made me feel so at ease, i couldn't believe it. He did my first molar extraction. The procedure was over before i knew it and for the first time ever, i didn't cry at the dentists. On top of that, Dr. Schell, called personally a couple of times to check up on me (Who does that anymore?) WOW. Too, his staff is so welcoming and helpful. I had an issue getting an 'okay' to go off my blood thinners for a week. It was a back and forth with my GP for a few days. The good part of this, was that his staff, kept me abreast of what was going on, following up with me, instead of me having to constantly contact them. I went to Dr. Schell for 2 oral surgeries to get rid of my wisdom teeth. Both times, I was able to get an appointment quickly, within a week. The procedures went so fast as if they never happened. For each visit, all I remember is I opened my mouth and the next thing I heard was, "Okay, you're all done." I was very happy with all my visits there and the painless and comfortable treatments I received there. I didn't feel one bit of anxiety there. My jaws felt absolutely fine after anesthesia and I didn't suffer from any stiffness, pain or prolonged numbness from Dr. Schell's nicely performed surgeries. I love Dr. Schell and he is one of only two honest and ethical dentists (both oral surgeons) among the numerous dentists I had seen throughout my life. From my experience, all dentists ( a couple of them are highly rated in yelp which is crazy) that I had used sound like crooks and act like crooks, except for Dr. Schell and another oral surgeon in the valley who had honestly and professionally provided me with excellent and comfortable dental care to cure my very serious dental problems. The price is reasonable also for each surgery at Dr. Schell. I don't know why it's so impossible to find regular dentists who act like doctors and healers. I wish more dentists could be ethical and honest like Dr. Schell. Unfortunately, all "regular" dentists whom I met so far always act like car salesmen and push invasive and unnecessary dental procedures with fear tactics. Dr. Schell doesn't sell, doesn't push, he pinpointed the problem concisely and provided no-nonsense advice. No bull, no rush, no sales pitch, no fear tactics. He is only 1 of 2 dentists I can trust. I just wish there were more regular dentists who could be trustworthy like Dr. Schell and this other surgeon whom I respect. P.S. My advice based on my numerous bad experience with dental cleaning, gum cleaning, gum surgery, crowns, replacement of crowns, veneers, etc, etc. is: don't listen to the greedy dentists and let them push you into any procedure. Don't let them scare you. 99% of what they suggest or propose on doing on your teeth are more harm than good, including the aggressive cleaning, which can damage the gum, fillings and the natural enamels, which then turn into more business for these crooked dentists. The rule of the thumb is, if your tooth doesn't hurt and it doesn't make you feel uncomfortable, don't let the money grabbing dentists do anything. If they tell you that you have decay, go do another exam with another dentist without telling him the decay your previous dentist found, and you will be surprised by the fact that your teeth are actually healthy and no filling is needed. Maintain diligent brushing after eating, flossing, and rinsing with mouth wash, which in my opinion, is more critical to oral health than those aggressive and uncomfortable teeth cleaning. Don't rush into gum surgery or deep gum cleaning just because you see blood when you brush your teeth, take some antibiotics and wait, and rinse thoroughly with Listerine, and the bleeding usually goes away gradually and gum becomes healthy again. Gum can often heal itself without invasive surgery or invasive cleaning. Always seek a second opinion even for a simple crown, never go to dentists who are too young or who aren't from either UCLA or USC. Avoid those general dentists who claim they can do everything from root canal to oral surgery to implants. Always, always seek a second opinion and don't start any dental procedure without a second opinion. Those dental offices that have fancy decors and overly smiley and pretty receptionists who are always in a hurry to take your credit card for deposit or prepayment for future visits are always red flags and are always the dental offices which caused my biggest dental miseries. Dentists who delegate a lot of their work to non-dentist assistants are also red flags. Don't let any non-dentist grind your crown or put a crown on your tooth, never!!! This is more like a 4.5 stars.My husband was referred to Dr. Schell, he was very friendly and charismatic along with both of the office staff members that we interacted with, one of which even gave my 2year old daughter paper and highlighter to make Daddy a picture while we waited for him. My husband's surgery went well for having such rooted impacted teeth that were pushing on others causing all kinds of problems as they should have been taken out 20years ago! It would have been 5 stars if I didn't feel so rushed, they didn't say if he had dissolving stitches or any stitches at all, the front desk woman did refer me to the pamphlet for questions and I had it done before so I knew what to expect. It was nice we got his meds in the office saving us a trip to the pharmacy! The price was a bit more than projected because they had to use more anesthesia, but that happens.Overall a great experience! read more
