Outstanding Customer Service! I walked in with a part that needed a bolt for my son's bicycle rear derailleur. He found a replacement within seconds and tested it on the part I brought with. I had damaged the threads on the part and Richard pulled out a Tap to fix the threads! How awesome. He then gave me a quick lesson on installing the derailleur and what to look for. Wow. I am active military and new to the area and my first order of business was finding a good bike shop. Cycling is my "thing" so to speak and have a lot of money in my bikes. I always have my bikes tuned up every spring and dropped off my S-Works Epic for a tune-up. I got a call it was done and was told my rear cassette and chain needed replaced and that I had probably noticed it wasn't shifting well. Odd considering the bike is two years old and I haven't ridden it due to an injury last year. I passed on the change but then dropped off my second mountain bike for a tune-up and to replace a broken front derailleur from my move. Again, I received a call that my rear cassette and chain needed replaced and that I had probably noticed it wasn't shifting well. It was the same pitch. This bike had a new chain put on the last spring that I rode it. It didn't sit well with me so when I picked put the my bike I asked him about it. He guaranteed me that it was legitimate and assured me that the shop was honest. I left feeling that I was probably wrong and would discover that my bikes actually do need chains and cassettes; after all, it has been two years since I rode. This is the reason for the poor YELP rating: both bikes had issues. My Epic handle bars were installed canted when put back together because I had a squeek in the headset. Simple fix, but annoying that I paid nearly $100 for a tune-up and I am having to fix something. Now tonight, I have a ride planned, have my gear on and friends waiting in the driveway. I get on the second bike they put the new derailleur on and the adjustment is so far off that the chain rubbed so bad I had to put it on the stand and spend 20 minutes adjusting. The cable was incorrectly adjusted which made the derailleur rub on the large chain ring. Again, $100 tune-up and I am having to fix their poor workmanship. Oh, and by the way.... BOTH bikes shifted perfectly without skip or hesitation and neither of the chains nor cassettes show wear. So much for needing a new chain and cassette. I have been able to establish great relationships with bike shops everywhere I've been stationed. Unfortunately, I am still looking for a quality bike shop with honest, good mechanics who QC their work. read more

3 years ago we purchased 2 catrikes and had a great experience with the customizing. If it were our only experience I would give it a 5 star rating. Recently we wanted to get a nice custom geared carbon 2014 cross bike but this time things didn't work out as smoothly. We visited Richard and got it ordered up with 50% deposit. He said it would be about a week. We waited 3 weeks and having not heard from him we decided to call him. He said the bike is no longer available but the 2015 might be "soon". I wonder why Richard didn't call us the moment he knew the bike would not be coming which was probably the day after it was ordered? We asked him to find out when the 2015 models would be available and cost. He said he would find out right away and let us know the cost and how long it would take to get it. He never called back. After another week we called again to find out and he said he has found a 2014 and it would be shipped "soon" and he would call us when it arrived. After a couple more weeks we again called to find out the status. He said it was there at his shop and we could come get it. We made an appointment to get it but since we are a 90 minute drive away and had only a short time to be able to be at his shop we wanted to be sure it would be 100% ready with the mods we ordered up so we could quickly be in and out. He said it would be ready for that appointment time. On the arrival to pick it up, it had not even been touched yet. Eventually after a 90 minute wait causing us to be late for other appointments he said it was completed. Later at home (2 hour drive away) we realized that the mods were not all done, (the low gearing requested had not been installed). Our bad for not double checking his work. We asked them to just ship us the larger rear cassette and we would have a local shop mount it for us and we gave the shipping address. After another week we called and they had not shipped it. Then another week we call again and they say they need our shipping address. Really? It was given when we first requested the part shipped 2 weeks earlier plus it was on the original order paperwork. 3 days later we receive our cassette for the low gearing. But it is the wrong cassette. The cassette that was shipped has only 10 gears instead of the 11 that the bike is needing. (you see it is a 22 speed with 2 front and 11 rear) So we decide to make a 3rd trip to the shop to drop off the bike to have the correct cassette shipped to him and installed. I am pretty sure they will need to install a longer cage and definitely a longer chain to handle the large cassette being installed. I base it on remaining slack and how many extra teeth the larger cassette will require. A couple weeks later we call them and they tell us to come in that the bike is ready. At the shop Richard tells us that they had to put a longer cage to handle the large range of chain length needed but that the original chain is ok and that all the gears are working including being able to handle "big front to big rear" sprockets. I was surprised but I believed him. In hindsight I should have asked him to demonstrate it or simply engaged it myself before leaving the shop. At home we find out on the first ride that the "big to big" gears will NOT engage because the chain is simply too short. It just locks up the crank when trying to go big to big. Ugh. Really? Ok, so we decide to cut our losses and not make a 5th trip (each one being 3 hours round trip) and just take it to our local bike shop in Big Bear. They confirm my estimate that the chain needs to be 2 links longer. They install it in 5 minutes and $50 later we are all set. Big to big and small to small,... it all runs perfectly. Will stay closer to home next time we need a bike. Richard could improve on communication by calling customers about their orders as important information comes to him instead of just sitting on the info and waiting for the customer to eventually call. Such a time waste. Also I have no idea how the bike managed to get "completed" with too short a chain. Did he have a distraction while working on it? read more

yeah this is a really nice bike shop when coming for replacement parts or getting some advice or help with something. the mechanics are really informative and they really know what they are talking about. they don't have the typical bullissher you would find at some other bike shops. they have really nice selection of any style of bikes. read more

Although it seems like a lot of people have positive reviews here, mine is a whole lot less than that. Decent product and that's why I gave them two stars. I took away the other three for the CRAPPY A** service I received. I brought in one rim for a couple of spokes and to get trued, and it will literally be a week tomorrow. No warning about being swamped or backed up, just a whole lot of "maybe tomorrow's" and "there's a lot of other people ahead of you." Really?! As close as it is to my house I will be going elsewhere from now on. They've lost a customer and his money burning me more than once... read more

I recently bought my third recumbent bike from Richard's Cyclery. It was an excellent experience. I provided Richard my specifications and ordered the bike over the phone, as I knew exactly what I wanted. The bike arrived three weeks later. Richard set the bike up and I rode it for a couple of weeks and then determined what adjustments were needed, I took the bike back to Richard and he fixed the three adjustments in two hours. I bought an adult Trike, Miami Sun, with a motor and it was ok. I did some research after I brought it home and found it didn't handle my weight capacity at 315 pounds. I told Richard and he let me trade it in for a trike that has a higher weight limit. So I got the Sun Atlas Cargo. I also exchanged the battery for a more powerful one and changed the 2 back tires. My new trike is sturdier, faster and looks bad ass! Highly recommended! read more

Great place, fixed parts on my bike that are no longer manufactured.

My name is Fred and I'm in a motorized chair and went to Richards Bike shop to get the foot rest on my loaner motorized chair lifted to hold my feet comfortably! When I went in with my mom we were greeted by 2 guys one named Storm and the other unfortunately forgot his name and asked if they were able to raise the footrest! The one guy went in back to get a tool. The other guy came back took off the foot rest went in back. Storm stayed and talked with us while the foot rest was getting fixed! Once the footrest was put back on it was a good fit! My Feet rest comfortably on it!. And they wouldn't take any money for there time fixing the footrest! Awesome customer service, great place to get what you need for your bike or even a wheelchair or motorized chair! When I use to be in a manual chair my mom took me there to get new wheels put on! I highly recommend Richards bike shop!!!! I will definitely be coming back for any repairs on my chair! read more

Super helpful to a do-it-yourselfer like me! I bought a used bike on Craigslist for my daughter, and while looking it over and tuning it up, I noticed the back wheel did not spin freely. A couple of forums and YouTube videos later, I diagnosed the issue. I pulled the wheel off, but did not have tools to remove the cassette. I took the wheel over to Richard's. Richard sold me the tool and some packing grease, and then showed me how to use it. He took the wheel apart, explained how to clean and lube the cassette, and how to regrease the bearings. I went home, cleaned everything up, put it all back together, but it was still tight. Back to Richard's! Richard asked if I adjusted the cones. What's that I ask? He says "time for a lesson looking over my shoulder." He took the wheel apart, adjusted the cones--explaining the whole time--and put it all back together. He talked to me about cone wrenches, and suggested I pickup a set at some point. Off I went with a like-new wheel! Very pleasant experience, and my daughter is trilled with her new toy. read more

went to Richards bike shop to get all my bearings greased or replaced and to get my spokes tightened and trued. As soon as i got it out of the shop i noticed the goose neck and head were loose, the hubs were both loose, my bike has a few new scratches, and my cranks or sprocket im not sure squeaks every time i pedal, and my chain is binding up when i pedal down on the right side. My mom wanted a light, easy to ride bike. She's in her 70s and rides her bike all the time. They have an easy in/out bike at Richards, with seven speeds and hand brakes. It's called a "Steamway". Perfect bike for anyone older or who rides with skirts. You do not have to hike your leg over anything and it is a smooth, comfortable ride. I didn't really like the seat, so Richard set us up with one more to our liking. This bike is great, and Richard did everything we needed to make it a perfect ride for my mom. Thanks for all the great friendly service. Have been going there since my kids were small, but this was an extra specail present for someone who really deserves it. I first went to a newer yet closer shop and they had no idea where to find this silly little part, but Steve at Richard's Cyclery had it in one of his many " silly little parts" drawers. I've been a long time customer at Richard's, mainly for parts and/or service, as I vern bought a bike there! With their help I've learned a lot about bicycle mechanics and how to do a lot of the routine things myself. Over the years we've replaced the bottom bracket, rear derailleur, cassettes, and a couple of chains as need be. We upgraded from the factory wheels a few years back, added bar ends, a new saddle, and lights. Pricing was always upfront, reasonable, and fair. I told myself that when it came time for a new bike I wasn't going to shop around, but deal with Richard's as they knew me, my bike, and riding habits. After looking at various makes and models I thought I found one that would be perfect for me -- a serious upgrade from what I had been riding, but not something way beyond my ability. After discussing my selection with Richard, he actually recommended a model one step below what I had chosen, even though it would have to be ordered and cost several hundred dollars less than my pick! I have no doubts that when it comes in we'll get it dialed in to me and I'll enjoy it immensely. I would highly recommend Richard's Cyclery to anyone for anything related to cycling. read more

first time i been there to repair my 2 bmx they were estimate 140 then when i pick up the bike they charge 178. i ask them why that much the owner said he replace 2 more bearing. and i ask how much you charge for turn up, he said 75 that fucking rip off. and my bike's wheel still loose. i feel very bad 178 more than a week i work. i felt they rip off but i can't do anything. if i dont get the bike i loose every thing. but i get the bike i feel i'm a donky. first and last to be at that danm store. read more
