Well I have to start by saying I brought my 94 year old mother and 1 year old granddaughter there for lunch on a Tuesday for lunch. My mom was very excited to go back to Ricks because she was there when it opened. Clearly when we came in the front desk greeters were unsure of why we had a child there. Definitely not a child friendly restaurant. But it was a Tuesday lunch my mom wanted to have a nostalgia moment but unfortunately it did not go that way. So sad. She always recalled Ricks with joy. Server was very clearly unattentive . My sweet mom paid for lunch $70. For sandwiches and grilled chicken but I can't quite get passed how we were treated. Cowboy ribeye had a beautifully developed crust. Both very tender! Iceberg wedge had a nice balance of dressing:topping:lettuce ratio. Fantastic onion ring. Crab dip made me audibly "mm!" Baked potato dry. Horseradish cream too creamy. Service was neither good nor bad. Kind of slow. Dessert- shaky but key lime pie was the best of the three we tried (apple pie and creme brûlée) Espresso might have been either old and reheated or instant. This spot is serving some of the best food in town. My husband and I started off with the Wagyu beef skewers and Crab Cake as our appetizer. Let me just emphasize that we scraped the plates clean. Both of these menu items were the best I've ever had. Being born and raised in Louisiana, I had my doubts about the Crab cake. It did not disappoint, more than delicious and the crawfish bisque that it comes with was an absolute treat. Next we shared the Cowboy Ribeye, it came with two loaded potatoes and onion rings, we added 6 shrimp and a side of Mac and cheese. The steak was cooked to perfection and flavors were spot on. If I could, I would eat here several times a week!! Shout out to our server Mark, he was awesome! Very attentive, polite and genuinely nice! Heads up that a reservation is needed or recommended. Amazing!! Between the service, the food and the atmosphere, you can't go wrong here. Our waiter, Lanier, was so professional and helpful. He really knew everything about everything and had great suggestions. He made us feel like we were making the best choices :). This is a great place for celebrations. We were celebrating our anniversary and noticed several other couples doing the same. Most people were dressed nicely, but there were a few that looked like they came right from work (wearing scrubs) and it's a lot nicer place than that. I lived in McKinney for most of my life and never came to Ricks until Valentines Day weekend. It was wonderful. Our server, Amanda took great care of us and paid attention to detail. We ordered a few cocktails and glasses of wine to drink. The crab dip was delicious and we ordered the oyster appetizer, which came with the works. For our entrees we shared the cowboy ribeye and scallop entree. Both were delicious and the sides that came with each made each entree plentiful. Came to Rick's Chophouse for the second time - the first time was a few years ago when I was researching where to live in the DFW area. While tooling around McKinney my sister and I stopped here for lunch. At that time I had the buttermilk chicken, which is to die for. I live here now, of course, and when she visited me last week we decided we wanted Rick's again. At one point she mentioned the buttermilk chicken, and then I couldn't get it out of my head. Once we arrived, however, and saw the menu again, we both ended up getting the Chicken Fried Chicken -- a phenomenal dish. I wish we had room for dessert, but I added a wedge salad (my fave!) and so I was really stuffed at the end. We had great service. The bathrooms are cute too. If you're ever in downtown McKinney, this is your spot to eat! read more

The bar was packed and we weren't allowed to sit because all seats were reserved! Drinks were ok. Staff were pleasant and service was good. Now let's talk about food. Worst lobster bisque I've ever had. Tasted like tomato soup with a couple pieces of lobster thrown in. Mr friend had the beet salad and said it had zero flavor. I had the carpetbagger fillet. Absolutely terrible piece of beef. Not cooked the way I asked and it was fatty/stringy. I couldn't cut it never mind chew it. Nothing had seasoning or even salt including the red wine demi glaze. The best part of my meal was the loaded baked potato. My friend had the shrimp and grits and said the shrimp were ok but the grits tasted like cardboard. Again, no flavor. For desert, we ordered the NY Cheesecake. It was definitely not made on site. Could tell it was previously frozen. They dropped two blackberries on top with about 6 dime size spots of blackberry sauce. It didn't taste bad but meh. Very little care is being given to their food. Someone at the top needs to start paying more honest attention to prepping and tasting. Left very disappointed after spending hundreds of dollars. We won't be back unless it's an invite for a tasting to show us they are trying to improve. There's too many other very good steakhouses to go to. read more

Update to previous review: We were invited back to Rick's to give it another try and we are so glad we did. We did order the bone in ribeye and filet this time and they were both perfectly cooked. Both steaks were full of flavor as were the sides. The wedge salad was delicious and had the perfect amount of toppings in each bite. The experience this time won us over and we will be back. The ambiance is nice but relaxed and our server was top notch. Our lesson learned is if you go to a "chophouse" for dinner, order the steaks! You will not be disappointed! read more

Our experience there was delightful. I would rate it between a 4 1/2 and 5 and would definitely go again. We went there for our 7th wedding anniversary and dined in the wine room. We absolutely loved the privacy and ambiance of the room. My husband ordered a Prime Rib Steak and said it was the BEST he'd ever had. That is a very big compliment since my husband is a good cook and has ordered several over the years. I had the filet mignon and would give it a 4. Whereas it was good, it was not as good as some I've had. My filet had garlic mashed potatoes with it, but I left a large majority of those on my plate as I did not really enjoy them. We loved our appetizer, the Shrimp Cocktail, and would give it a 5. They were quality shrimp which seemed to be cooked to perfection. They gave us desserts and we both LOVED the apple pie with bourbon ice cream , it was delectable. We also got the bread pudding, but I did not realize it was an orange flavored bread pudding so my husband finished it off for us. He said he would give that a 4. We had quality service and even the server's assistant was very good. He had VERY good manners and tried to stay on top of things, even the mundane water refills. Very nice venue with good food. We snagged one of the 4 tables in the bar, the very last one not occupied at 5 30 p.m. on a Saturday night. The bar is a gorgeous room with high tin ceilings, a wall of books, 4 tables and several groupings of plump leather chairs with low tables. The bar selections are nicely displayed on shelves behind the bar, high enough that a rolling library ladder is needed for the top shelves. The whole room looks like a private library with one heck of a nice assortment of booze. Very cool. We had a nice young lady take care of us, did a fine job. RRR and I split a very small (4) portion of fried oysters (SOOOOOOOO good!) with our drinks. I was a bit disappointed in the rye I ordered, no help from our waitress. Dinner was an 8 oz portion of grass fed filet (they have several filet choices) and I split this with RRR. This is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5. This is a steak place in steak country, right? It was perfectly cooked for us, medium rare, but had gristle in it. Not a lot but enough to make it difficult to chew, just not the best filet. huh. I've had much better in Indianapolis. Rick's is my Foodie Happy Place. Anytime we have a celebration....birthday, anniversary, Valentine's this is our celebratory spot. We have eaten at III Forks, Del Frisco, Perry's, Silver Fox and Rick's is just as good as one of those spots. The upside is also I don't have to travel so far. I also love supporting a local independently owned eatery. Now to be warned Rick's is not very large, so you normally need a reservation for weeknights and during holidays. There is a lounge area that serves the entire menu, but it is more of a casual setting. First off, its on the Square which is a treat in itself. It's always fun to go to the Square to eat a meal. When you walk into Rick's it has beautiful dark wood floors and massive wood furniture. The lighting is soft and romantic. For an appetizer the crab cake and crab dip are both amazing! The crab cake is mostly lump crab meat and very little fillers. It is lightly fried and not greasy at all. The crab dip is culinary genius! Who would have ever thought to put crab and black eyed peas together. It sounds weird, but somehow it really works! It is AWESOME! I love the Carpetbagger Steak. It is a filet stuffed with a huge fried jumbo shrimp. It is served with steamed carrots and a loaded baked potato. Now, have you ever had a steak melt in your mouth? Well Rick's steak is the most tender, juicy, flavorful steak I have ever had the pleasure of eating! If you are watching your carbs or diet. The buffalo steak is my new fav! It is a buffalo fillet. It is a lean meat packed with flavor and super tender. It is served with cauliflower mash. These will make you say, WHAT?? "How is that cauliflower?" It tastes just liked mashed potatoes. It also has smoked carrots. It's a gourmet meal that doesn't make you feel guilty. The hubby likes the Cowboy! It is a large steak the size of your face that is cooked to perfection. It is served with onion rings and a loaded baked potato. Now, the steak is definitely 5 stars...no question about it! I just don't like their mac n cheese. It's a steak place not a restaurant you go to for the sides, so I overlook that. The service is always that of a 5 star restaurant. Absolutely incredible service at Rick's! My family took me there to celebrate my promotion at work (I was in Texas to visit my family). At least three employees personally came to congratulate me, they gave me a free dessert, and they even wrote congratulations on the plate! So awesome. Great ambiance, great food, great drinks! This place is pricey but a good choice for the occasional splurge meal for a special event. My brother took me here during my recent visit to Texas (which means I was the special event - yay, me!) and we had a wonderful experience. The restaurant had a long wait (even at 7:00 on a Tuesday in early-Dec) so they offered the bar/lounge, which was perfectly charming. Located in a separate room in the back, you can sit at the bar or at one of the many cigar-room style 4-top tables, complete with cozy barrel chairs. It didn't feel like we were not part of the normal restaurant, other than a slightly different vibe. The servers were no less attentive than you'd expect in a dining hall. The menu is small but mighty, offering all the traditional chophouse selections (think sirloin, filet mignon) as well has a few yummy fish options. I personally had a spinach salad, calamari, and tortilla soup that was all very good. (I didn't expect calamari to be anything special in northern Texas but was surprised. The sauce was not a traditional aioli and added a lot of flavor.) I snuck a few bites of my brothers meal (fish, but I forget which) which was also very tasty.
