I really enjoyed my visit here , customer service was excellent, they were polite and helpful at my decision, I ordered couple different slices and tiramisu is my always favorite, kind of pricey but I can offer it. Also I liked mocha blanc , very smooth and creamy aftertaste!! It's clean there and good for big groups to sit in there. read more

I am sad to write this review but my last 3 visits to Rick's have been so disappointing. First off, why are you so short staffed? I had a cake container thrown on the counter in front of me with such force that it smooshed up the cake inside. The person that did it was historically a joy to be helped by, so I figured they were having a bad night and quietly asked for a new piece from another employee. The second time the service was amazing but my cake was gross. The frosting was thick and while beautiful, tasted like unsalted butter. The whole cake lacked flavor. All the ice cream flavors were odd too so my boyfriend left without. This time my cake is dry, the slice is dirty (has two other types of cake on it from what I assume was a dirty knife) and is so small and cut crooked. The frosting is so thin it barely counts. I've uploaded photos. I hope the new owners actually read the reviews because they are running a local favorite into the ground. read more

We stopped by for a quick bite at noon. Sandwich and desserts were solid but I was shocked by the state of the women's restroom. One stall had no toilet paper with the toilet seat off center by half a foot and the larger stall had used paper towels and TP in a pile as high as the toilet next to it. I thought that the restaurant must have just opened and staff possibly didn't have a chance to clean from the night before yet, but I realized it had been open since 8am, meaning the bathroom was in that state for hours. Bathrooms in a busy restaurant can of course get out of sorts quickly, but the fact that the bathroom was left in such bad shape made me uneasy about the cleanliness of the whole place. read more

Another great spot to hit up in Sacramento, CA if you've got a sweet tooth is Rick's Dessert Diner. We were taken here my bf's friends who are locals of Sacramento. Upon entering you will be amazed by the decor and how it reminds you of an old school diner. It reminded me a lot of Baked Expectations in Winnipeg, MB. They had so many varieties of cakes, pies, and baked goods and for drinks, you can choose from Italian sodas, to floats, or milkshakes, or even coffee. The amount of cakes they offered was overwhelming as it was really hard for us to decide on which ones to get. I ended up getting the Raspberry Diva Cake, which is composed of layers of buttermilk poppyseed cake, filled with raspberry preserves and iced with raspberry buttercream frosting. I'm not sure if the cake had been sitting there for too long, but the cake was not moist, however, flavour wise it was very good. If the cake had been moist, this would have been stellar. The bf got the coconut cake, which is filled and iced with cream cheese covered with coconut. This cake was really good both in flavour and the moistness of the cake. We also got to try the cakes that his two friends got. The fruit basket, which I highly recommend trying was amazing. It reminded us of the Chinese fruit filled cakes that you find on birthdays. The cake was super soft and the fruits and whipped cream were delicious. And lastly the chocolate fudge cake is a chocolate lovers dream. You've got dense chocolate layers filled and iced with chocolate ganache. It was a bit too chocolate-y and dense for me but if you like that kind if cake, you will most likely enjoy this. Overall, I'd recommend anyone to come and try out their desserts. I would definitely go back again if I got the chance to. read more

I have been going here for a few years now with friends after an event, and usually order the cheesecake. I'm honestly really disappointed that they've recently changed the recipe. Ricks Dessert Diner has always been one of my favorite dessert places in the area! I always order the crème brûlée and it continuously hits the spot! Definitely my favorite thing to order. This time I ordered two and they weren't evenly brûléed at the top, which I thought was strange. I have also had the red velvet cake it is delicious as well. Everything is displayed so beautifully. Each in our group got a different slice of cake. I had the lemon raspberry it was so very dry. Pretty but dry. The chocolate chip cookie with sea salt was the best. The German chocolate cake was good I tried a bite. The fingertip was thrown away by two people. I was very disappointed. read more

Long story...Ordered a cake for my sister's bridal shower and they misunderstood the vision I was going for. Leading up to picking up the cake, I was emailing back and forth with Roberta, and everything seemed to go smoothly! I asked for the spring Mother's Day exterior with the framboise interior with strawberry preserves, while changing the colors of the flowers. Roberta was super helpful in placing the custom order! When it came time to pick up the cake, it was not at all what I asked for. Don't get me wrong, it was still a decent cake but not what I envisioned. I was ready to walk out with it, but Claire was very apologetic and offered to have it remade. She even went above and beyond to rewrite my order with me to ensure they get it right. Luckily the bridal shower was moved the following day due to weather. She called me 3 hours later that the cake was done! Which was SO quick!! The guests kept asking me where I got the cake because it looked beautifully done. Although they messed up the first time, they made it right and that's all I can ask for! Would 100% purchase a custom cake from them again (maybe do it in person or show inspo pics next time lol). The price was very affordable compared to the quotes I was receiving elsewhere. I only paid $130 with tip included! They only charged $10 extra for the custom icing colors. I've added the before and after photos. read more

Payan & Quisha were absolutely fantastic helpers and workers! The service here is outstanding and the desserts are even better! Cake, Eclairs, Pecan Pie, Ice Cream and much more! They are open late and seemed to always have a line. Shoutout to Payan for helping a customer who was confused ordering a coffee. Almost ordered a cinnamon peppermint coffee while he noticed this and clarified it in case that is what she really wanted. She did not, just read the menu wrong instead of noticing it was two completely different flavors. She was super grateful he noticed this from her misunderstanding and then he made her coffee. Good customer service noticing! Shoutout to both those workers, they made this place taste even better! Definitely recommend and will be coming back! read more

We have not been here forever. We were in the area so we decided to get some sweets. It's so funny that on the block are several bakeries and other sweet vendors. We should call this Sugar Alley. Just a thought. There were only a few people eating inside so no line. All the cakes looked so yummy and hard to pick one. I got the Neapolitan and it was so delicious. I also picked up a brownie but I didn't eat it yet. The wife got the carrot cake and it was also fabulous. This place is the bomb and everything is so tasty. A must stop for dessert. read more

I haven't been here for a long time. I think the last time I was here is when they first moved. This was one of my hangouts back in high school, when they were located on, I think it was on capital or near there. I forget. They are still the same now as back in the day. They make everything there. They have a lot of varieties of desserts. They have ice cream, cakes, pies, cheesecakes, cookies, brownies, and a wide varieties of drinks. The carrot cake I had was good. It was moist and tasted good. The desserts here are a little on the pricey side. They were back pricey back in my high school days and pricer now. Haven't been in a few years. Went for my sons birthday. I can tell once inside that something was different. Ever since Ahmed Eita sold. They changed the recipes and ruined the Ricks I remembered. I remember when Ahmed bought from the first owner, he told me the condition was not to change the recipes. He could come up with new ones and the originals stayed the same. I guess the 3rd owner doesn't respect tradition. The taste now would make any true pastry chef wretch. read more

This review was primarily on their dessert. Walking in, the diner is amazing. It's a time warp to the older days with this diner vibe. I went straight to the dessert line, because from afar--they all look so delicious. My patty and I got a few slices to try. The most favorite one we might of tried was strawberry banana cheesecake cake. They told us this was "limited edition" so we decided to go with that. This cheesecake was so good! First time at Rick's, I'm not really a dessert person but my friends wanted something sweet before heading home. Vibe is exactly what I expected, cute and retro. Many different cakes and sweets to choose from. I had the pistachio cannoli. It tasted like a typical cannoli, not overly sweet. Service is fast ever if there's a line. My dude loves desserts, so after eating dinner at Zócalo the other night, we had to stop into Rick's to satisfy our sweet teeth. I don't remember the names of what we each ordered, but what's in a name?! I got some sort of raspberry tart, and he got yellow cake with dark and white chocolate frosting. Visiting here is always a treat! we came in on a Sunday night around 8:30 PM. It wasn't as busy as it usually is. So the line went fast. So many cake options to choose from! Hard to make up your mind! We tried the chocolate flourless cake. Wow! Rich and fudgy!! We also got the Black Forest cake. Very moist. For me the whipped cream to cake ratio was off. And definitely not enough cherries. But delicious nonetheless. We took our order to go, but it's always nice to sit inside and enjoy, too! Can't wait to visit again and try more items! read more

In recent years Rick's ingredients have become VERY different!! They've moved away from using real/dairy-based ingredients in most pies and cakes -- and especially frostings. You can really tell the difference in taste. (Just ask them what's in their "buttercream" frostings!) Sorry to say, -- I think I'm done with Rick's!! read more

I have been going here for years and time and time again I am shocked at how good everything is. I have been going here for about 1 day a week and I get to try all sorts of flavors due to living close. My favorite is the oreo cheesecake (get their early, because it goes fast) They have tons of cakes, cookies, cheescakes, pies, treats, icecream, alcoholic drinks and coffee options Their cakes have the awe factor that matches the old timey and creative atmosphere. I love it here. The bathroom is clean and on the smaller side. I will forever be obsessed with this place. read more

although i love the look and variety of this spot, i'm not sure its worth the money. many of the desserts i've tried have been just okay, and i think you'd get your moneys worth getting a cake slice from a local grocer. (i will shout out the tres leches though, it's good.) i do think its a fun visit if you ever get a chance! the customer service is always great and its a fun place to sit around for a while. read more

I had the highest of hopes for this place. The pictures looked soo good and I drove from out of town to finally try it. Don't judge a book by its cover because this was the worst cake I have ever had. It was dry weirdly flavored and just downright bad. I would have been better off getting a cake square from the fridge at my local gas station. read more

Instead, I had to pay again for the mocha just to finish the coffee break with my wife. Very disappointing experience. It was an easy decision not to come back. I looked up the origin and it turns out Wushiland is a spin off from the Taiwanese boba chain 50嵐 (if you speak mandarin, it says Wushi Lan). Located on Sutterville in a tiny strip mall with minimal parking right next to the Freeport area where there are plenty of good eats, some of which are my favorite places in Sac to eat at, Wushiland is in an optimal location. Bright, clean, and with a decent amount of seating, you have the option to order from kiosks or up front at the counter. The AC was blowing cold and a nice respite from the El Niño heat. The workers are friendly and drinks are made quickly. Be advised that the drinks are voluminous, especially if you're like me and ask for less ice. Coming from someone who considers Chicha San Chen their favorite Taiwanese tea chain (but alas we don't have it in Sac), the difference in quantity is huge. Obviously if you're looking for a refined style of tea chain, Wushiland doesn't compare, but still the taste of their teas shine through and there is a good variety for everyone's palate. The first time I tried their earl grey tea because I have been craving an earl grey for a while, and that was deliciously smooth. The mini boba were so fun to chew on, and I usually prefer them over the regular size. They provide a ton of boba here as well. The next time I had their yakult green tea and that was very refreshing indeed. Both times my husband went with fruit teas, and had nice remarks to say about both of his drinks. This place has been a go-to for years. Never disappoints. Except for out last visit. And it wasn't the food. My sister needed a dessert for a dinner party and instead of going to grocery stores she did Rick's Always good and worth the money. We went in and were not very busy. And I mean only 3-5 people in line compared to like 20. Sara waited on us. She must have had a bad day or that's just her not so cheery disposition but she just rubbed us the wrong way. Was not very informative or friendly. And I would be more understanding if there was a bunch of people behind us but there wasn't and there was someone else working and helping behind the counter. I was really disappointed with my experience at Rick's Dessert and Diner, especially considering the price paid for this cake. This cake was for my mom's 75th birthday, which made the situation even more upsetting. When I opened the box, the cake was already falling apart, with pieces separated and frosting smeared inside the packaging. It clearly did not survive normal transport. For the cost, I expected a reasonably sized, sturdy box that would keep the cake secure during travel. Instead, the packaging was inadequate, allowing the cake to shift and break apart before it even made it home. The cake itself may have had potential, but the poor packaging and resulting damage took away from the presentation on such an important milestone celebration. Hands down, this is the greatest place for dessert I have ever been. I used to live in Midtown Sacramento, and Rick's was always a memorable experience. To this day, if I'm ever in Sacramento, I try and stop by Rick's just to get an assortment for me and my wife. The best thing on the menu, in my opinion, is the eclair. I get 2 every time just so I can have one the next day. The pecan pie is stellar, their cookies are amazing, the brownies are great, the cheesecakes are rich. This is not a place to keep it safe and get just one thing. Go nuts. Try everything at least once and you'll find at least 2 new favorites. And if the line isn't out the door, consider yourself lucky. It's worth the wait, the cost, and the calories. I visited Rick's two days in a row! As someone who usually goes for store-bought cake, I'm a real sucker for a good, basic cake slice. Rick's blew me away with their variety of cake flavors available by the slice, and the portions are huge! They also offer an impressive selection of baked goods, including croissants, cookies (even Italian ones!), apple pie, peach pie, and cheesecakes. Their banana pudding and tiramisu look bomb, I can't wait to try them next time! If you grab a cake slice, definitely get some ice cream to go with it. The only downside was the line, it was pretty long tonight, and it took about 30 minutes to get to the counter. I wish they had more staff to keep things moving, but honestly, it was worth the wait. First off, the selection is insane - there are so many delicious desserts to choose from, it's almost overwhelming. But once I settled on my choices, I was blown away by how delicious everything was. The desserts were perfectly sweet and rich, with just the right amount of indulgence. But what really set Rick's apart for me was the service. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, making sure my dining experience was top-notch from start to finish. The tiramisu, recommended by the staff, was well-made and flavorful, though a bit sweeter than expected. Still enjoyable, just not as espresso-forward as I prefer. The old, authentic interior with dim lighting and vintage music boxes gives the space real character. Service was pleasant and attentive without being pushy, offering thoughtful recommendations. Rick's Dessert is the bomb! I loved all their selections. And when my daughter got married I came to Ahmed (the owner) to present my design and get a quote. OMG, not only that his price is the best out of the 6 bakers I went to, he executed that design as it was on the picture. I got four tiers with four different flavors that was absolutely to die for. It is moist, delicious, and beautiful! Rick's is the place not just for dessert but definitely for wedding cakes. I highly recommend this place to anyone especially for my family and friends. I came here yesterday with my 11-year old daughter after having a big lunch. We had planned to just "look" at the pies and then come back another time when we were not already so full. But the pies were SO pretty and tempting that we could not resist buying two slices! I had the raspberry cheesecake and my daughter had the chocolate mint pie...both were incredible! They have so many choices...the only hard part is deciding which slice to choose! The employees were super helpful and friendly and the diner itself is so cute! We decided to come here for desert on Friday night the line was sooo long but moved quickly! There is so manny different cake options , smoothies . Ice cream anything you want! I got the banana pie , my husband for the strawberry cake . It was both really good!!! Everyone loved there cakes , they do come really big so you'll most likely need a to go box! I asked for a cup of water since ive gotten it before. Im told to buy a bottle. I get a tip for getting refills from my cashier "you can refill your bottle in the bathroom, its weird but people do it" I love going to the bathroom for water refills. Shakes and cakes are still good. Bathroom water is not that bad either! Management please stop being this greedy, have managers who can kick out hustlers, and if i spend 8.75 for a strawberry milkshake don't make me feel like I'm robbing you blind for a cup of water on a hundred degree day. read more

DRY AF! I've been frequenting Rick's for 10+ years and have never ate a moist cake here. THE CAKES ARE ALWAYS DRY AS DIRT. GUARANTEED. This place is known to be a go-to for cakes in Sacramento and I've tried to love it, I desperately wanted to love it... but after my last visit I decided I will never return. Ever. Its a waste of $. This was not only disgusting but completely unacceptable. It's beyond me how a reputable establishment could overlook such a basic aspect of food hygiene. It's clearly a really fun experience to come here.. they've got the aesthetics down. The problem is that all their cakes (well, only the ones I've tried that is) seems to have a freezer burn taste. I got a white cake slice there this week which was so freezer burned it had to be tossed. This happened another time as well. So the cakes surely aren't fresh, which is too bad. Hands down the best dessert diner I've ever been too. They have so many selections it's crazy! They have cakes, pies, eclairs, cookies, brownies, anything you can imagine they have. It's so good the line was outside the door. They even serve gunther's ice cream! They are a bit pricey but the dessert is so good, it's okay to splurge every once in a while. To be honest, I was more upset about the fact that by the time the two entrees came out, everyone was already done eating. So those two people just had to box their food and eat it later. After dinner, it was ice cream time. We order my son's ice cream (just a scoop of chocolate) first at least 15 minutes before they take anybody else's order at the table. They proceed to take everyone else's order (sundaes and specialty ice creams) and get this...my kid's ice cream came out 30 minutes after everyone else got their ice cream. Absolutely terrible experience and once again, no manager interaction with us, just the server claiming some sort of miscommunication again. My kid's food (the entree and the ice cream) was what came out a whopping combined time of one and a half hours late. They comped the grilled cheese sandwich but then had the audacity to charge for the ice cream! And on top of this...they automatically charged gratuity for the whole table! I 100% hate that this was my one and only experience with this place given its history, but this was just a disgusting display of customer service and the lack of integrity.
