I had a very disappointing experience with Riley Heat & Air due to a complete lack of transparency around pricing. The technician gave us a verbal estimate before starting the work, but when he handed us the final invoice, the amount was noticeably higher. When I questioned the discrepancy, he told us the company doesn't provide a list of official prices and that he could essentially charge what he saw fit. I asked for a discount because the final price felt excessive, and he said he'd have to call someone at the company to approve it. When I called the company myself to see if someone else could help, the person who answered said the only person I could speak with was the technician--because he is the manager. They also told me no one else has access to the owner, which left me with no recourse. This experience felt unprofessional and unfair. It's incredibly frustrating to deal with a company that doesn't stand by clear pricing and leaves customers without any real way to resolve billing issues. I wouldn't recommend them based on this lack of accountability and transparency. They charged over $1000 just to replace the Freon. read more

Our AC stopped working as soon as it started getting hot a year later despite the services provided.

While my partner and I were under contract for a new home, our home inspector identified several HVAC issues and recommended a separate HVAC inspection. We had hired another HVAC company that bailed at the last minute, and the one good thing I'll say about Riley is that their technician, Adonis, was able to come out with less than 24 hours' notice. He arrived on time and called when he was on his way so we knew when to expect him. Perhaps in part because our realtor was present, the inspection left quite a bit to be desired. Adonis was very quick to slap a Riley sticker on all our equipment, but he didn't spend much time with it. Instead, he rather quickly said that everything was fine and talked up how great it was that our home had Carrier products. Adonis identified that our heat pump was making an unusually loud noise, but he said we shouldn't worry since the product was under warranty. I had to ask him repeatedly to write this up so we could have the sellers address it, but Adonis kept saying it was going to be "really hard" for the seller to identify the issue. In the end, he did hand-write a few words on our receipt indicating that the heat pump was making a loud noise. During the inspection, the furnace shut itself off due to overheating. Adonis said this reflected proper functioning and that we shouldn't worry. After we moved in, though, this proved to be a serious issue as the furnace shut itself off every few minutes. We had to have someone else come and fix it. Since we've moved in, we've been informed that ducts easily visible behind the furnace were not properly sealed. That's another issue we'll have to fix that Adonis failed to identify. When I called Riley, they quoted me $89 for the inspection. They did not say the fee was per system. Adonis said we needed to pay $178 because our home has two HVAC systems. We presented a coupon from Riley's website for $25 off a "services call," but Adonis said we couldn't use this coupon because an HVAC inspection isn't a services call. As you might surmise, I'll be staying away from this company in the future and I'd urge you to do the same. read more

We had a new HVAC system installed by Adonis and although it all seemed positive at first, the system has had repeated problems and has required multiple repairs in just three years after installation. Most recently, when the system stopped working again (nine months after the last time it had been serviced) Adonis did not respond to our multiple calls or emails requesting service. So unfortunately we've wasted a lot of time and money on this HVAC system and have moved on to other contractors. read more

What a nightmare! I hired them to fix a broken ac less than one hour ago. They gave me one year warranty. I I call and the said it was still covered. Some came over to take a look at and order parts. Again, he asked me to show credit card charge and I was expecting just service fee ( what I was told over the phone ). After equipment was installed they gave me a $1500 bill. I was like " what"?!! I can only speak to their service and promptness (I'm a tenant, my landlord covered the cost). I contacted Riley this morning around 10 AM for an emergency HVAC repair in the DC summer heat and they told me they were available after 4 PM. My landlord then called them around noon to confirm, and they gave me a window of 4-6 PM. They arrived at 5:30 PM, were prompt, friendly, kind, fixed the issue quickly, explained everything to my landlord, and were done after an hour-ish. I would definitely recommend! read more

They do not even qualify for one star. They were sent by choice home warranty (and would never have been my choice) They changed the amount on my check I paid them. I have the check from the bank and my bank statement with the added amount. They claimed for work done on my unit but they had done nothing. Then choice home warranty subtracted what they had paid to Riley Heat and Air from what they authorized for my settlement. So they profited from me. I have phoned them just to be shouted at. I would do anything you possibly can to avoid hiring this company. This company is extremely unprofessional bordering on being scammers. I wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy. I contacted Riley in April when my air conditioning unit had failed. I requested both a cost estimate to repair the unit and a cost estimate to replace it. Instead, the servicer Adonis implemented an expensive repair ($1300) without telling me the cost in advance, which I never would have agreed to if I'd known what it was, given the age of my system. Another Yelp reviewer describes essentially the exact same situation, which suggests to me that this is a common practice of this business. In addition, I subsequently asked another company what they would have charged for this repair and looked up the cost of the parts Adonis installed, and the repair was extremely overpriced to the point of price gouging. What's worse, the repair lasted only three weeks, at which time my a/c unit again failed. We then attempted to exercise the warranty it came with. Adonis returned to assess what parts would be needed. We agreed on which specific parts would be installed and on what date, including getting those two pieces of information in writing and signing it at the time of putting down an additional deposit. He then returned on that date to do the installation and brought a part that was different from the one we agreed to and not correct for our system, and he got extremely agitated when we indicated we wanted the original part. When we asked when he'd be able to get that part, he refused to continue working with us and refused to refund our deposit. We repeatedly tried to find out when he could get the correct part or work out an agreement for a partial reimbursement, but he was completely unreasonable and would not work with us. We are now out the cost of the original repair and the additional deposit. We have really suffered as a result of working with this company and deeply regret contacting them. In the heat of a DC summer, the only thing you want out of a HVAC service technician is speed and efficiency. Being just one day without your air conditioning can be devastating in the middle of July. So when I had an issue with my HVAC this past week, I was glad that Riley & Heat technicians were able to come out so quickly and do what turned out to be a really simple repair (clogged condensation pipe that led to an overflow). Within 30 mins of coming in, my mind was put at ease and the problem was fixed. And most importantly, the A/C was on again. read more

If you're having an urgent problem with your HVAC, don't call Riley, they won't help you. I tried to get a technician to come take a look at my unit since the contractor who did the install has been away handling a family emergency. They said that they cannot look at any units installed in the last five (5!!!) years by any other companies. I will be taking my business elsewhere and would suggest others do the same. For what it's worth, I had asked them for an estimate last year on some work and had a really wonderful interaction with their technician Adonis. I called Riley Heat and Air hoping to have my system diagnosed and repaired. I was quoted $65 for a service fee (that would then end up going towards repairs). When I spoke to the technician, who is also a manager, he told me I actually needed to pay two service charges of $89, since I had two AC condensers and then quoted me a price of almost $1,500 for the repair. I asked him the price of a few parts, quickly realized that he was multiplying everything by 10X+, and asked him to send me a price for an entire system installation. In short, I ended up paying $20 more than my quoted service fee (which the guy told me was 'cutting me a deal') and went with another company. I recently purchased a home in DC and, like most homes in the area, it is older and needed some work. I knew when I purchased the home that the furnace and water heater needed to be replaced so I did a Google search for local companies. Riley was the most responsive and most reasonable quote. Fast forward to the completed job.... the units were installed properly and work well in the home. The service was professional, fast and affordable. I even received a call the following morning to ask how the unit heated the home over night. I'm very pleased with Riley and would highly recommend them to anyone needing HVAC services. read more

We were very pleased with Riley Heat and Air, especially after a less-than-helpful experience with another company. They responded to our call quickly, made a diagnosis, and we got a complete HVAC overhaul within 5 days. The technician (Adonis) was very helpful, and went above and beyond to ensure the service was finished in a timely manner... quite important given it was the middle of June in DC. Adonis even stayed late on a Friday night to finish the installation, even when the initial expectation was that it would be completed the following Saturday. Since the initial installation, we've had an issue with a leak from condensation on the unit (I don't believe this was related to the quality of the unit or service, however), and Adonis/Riley were once again very helpful and prompt in taking care of the issue. He was back to the house within a day, and created a temporary fix for the unit until a more permanent one was available. A couple of weeks later he was back for the permanent fix. Both have held, and we haven't experienced any other issues. I would highly recommend them to anyone in need of quality, prompt service... especially during what I'm sure is one of the busiest times of year for HVAC service. read more

Riley recently did an HVAC installation at the condo building in which I live. At that time, they placed a sticker with their business name, web address and phone numbers on ALL of the HVAC units on our roof, not just the unit they installed. I don't know if they covered any other business's stickers when doing so. I am fine if a company leaves their advertising sticker on HVAC units for which they've been hired to service/install. However, businesses should not cover other business's contact information and should not place their stickers on HVAC units which belong to others with whom they do not have a business relationship, as those units are private property. No other companies have done this over the dozen years I've lived here. Some companies have left business cards or flyers in the lobby, which I have no objection to. I am unhappy with this situation because we have frequent turnover of units so when a new owner has AC trouble he/she will see the sticker on the outdoor unit and perhaps assume that the previous owner used Riley, which is a sort of tacit endorsement of this company. Also, if other companies see the Riley stickers on each unit, they may feel it's ok to place their stickers on all the units, too. Finally, I don't use Riley and would not want the company that I use to think that I'm not a loyal customer. They are the ONLY ones that touch my system and I don't want them to think otherwise, as I'm sure they prioritize my calls because I am a good customer. I called Riley Heat & Air and spoke to one of the owners who told me that individuals often ask him to place these stickers on ALL the units at a condo building. That doesn't make sense at all. He hung up on me when I pressed as to why his company felt it was ok to do this. I called back to continue the discussion but he hung up again. My experience was the same as what another reviewer had posted about this company charging several times more for parts than what they should. I have used Riley heat and air for several service calls on my aging a/c and this last June finally pulled the trigger on a new system. The response time to come for the calls and then to install the new system was top notch. The technician was so knowledgeable and has always been very courteous and professional. I got a new system and was even able to go on a payment plan - they helped me with the paperwork as well!. I highly recommend Riley Heat & Air. I have called them twice over the past few years with both AC, and more recently, an issue with my heater. They provide great service - both times they were able to have someone out within a few hours of me calling. The service is professional and friendly and they are truly experts at being able to quickly diagnose a problem with either heating or AC units. Even when I had to wait for a part for a day to be ordered, they were able to provide a temporary fix. Also nice that they called afterwards to check up on things. Price is very fair and reasonable! My AC stopped working on July 3 and it was 85° inside my house. I called Riley Heat and Air at 6:30pm. The night before the holiday, so I assumed that there wouldn't be anyone there. Much to my surprise, a tech (Adonis) answered the phone. He said that they were going to be closed on the 4th for the holiday, so despite being fully booked with calls, he squeezed me in. Less than an hour later he was at my house, and right now the cool air is pouring out of the vents. Thank goodness...otherwise we would have had a sweltering 4th of July. Worked with Adonis in the Bethesda area and the experience was more than expected - we had a very old system in dire need of replacement. Adonis was on-time, did a thorough inspection of our needs and the pricing for what they offered was competitive with others (not saying great - but well within what everyone else was charging). What he did save me money on was the "maintenance" contract --- with our previous heating & a/c service provider we had to be on "the list" for priority service if there was a problem with our unit. This required a paid yearly contract with additionally paid inspections every fall and spring. Adonis was quick to point out that was a waste of money - especially on a unit this new - and that if anything went wrong, call them - they would come out. And that we didn't need a "maintenance" contract. So if you're dealing with someone who insists on a yearly maintenance contract... maybe they're not being so up front with you. My air conditioning went caput two days ago and like everyone else in this area I'm trying to stay cool in the middle of our first heat wave of the year. Earlier in the day (around 7am) my husband had contacted another company that said they could get out to our house that day, however they weren't very forthright about their projected arrival time and after waiting for 8 hours we decided to try another company. I found Riley here on Yelp and although the reviews were few, they were stellar. We gave them a call and they said they would have a technician out to our St. Charles home in 30 minutes. They were true their word and arrived around 5:15 pm. They were able to diagnose the problem, and my AC was up and running again by 7:30. The technicians were pleasant and professional. I couldn't have asked for anything more during an unpleasant experience, no one is happy sitting in a sweltering hot house. I highly recommend Riley. They provided better service and better pricing than many of the larger companies. I'm very pleased. read more

After enduring a night without a/c in August, in Washington D.C, I looked through yelp and found Riley's with 5 stars. Called them at 8am and they promised to show up between 12 and 2pm. Adonis from Riley called me at 1pm and as promised showed up at my door 30 minutes later. He appeared very knowledgeable and fixed an issue with my breaker circuit. I cannot speak highly enough about this company, in particular their technician Adonis. Our AC broke a couple weeks ago. Of three companies who came to look at the system -- all of whom recommended we completely replace it since it was really old -- Adonis was the only one who found a workaround that was able to get it working on the spot by bypassing the circuit board (or something). This was a short-term fix but he did not charge for it at all, and I felt went above and beyond in suggesting it and taking care of it. With two young kids in the house this was crucial and a huge relief. He then came several days later to do the hvac replacement, was very straightforward in recommending the cheapest of the three options available in terms of equipment after we explained our plans to be moving in a few years, completed the installation that same day. Most impressive and notable to us, he helped us rebalance our vents in the house so that finally the upstairs is actually cool. We have lived in the house five years and thought the upstairs just always had to be hot in the summer and there was nothing to do about it. Not true! This was several weeks ago; the system has worked great ever since. Throughout Adonis was extremely professional. If only all contractors and workmen could be this good. read more
