First time here for me! Always wanted to stop in because it's always busy so I figured there would be a reason why. My visit started out so so because the waitresses were a little stressed. This was due to the amount of customers and also a broken coffee machine and the electricity acting up causing extra delays. When I arrived I sat at the counter. I was not greeted for about 2 to 3 minutes and only because I waved my hand. My intention was only to ask for a menu. When she saw me she told me that I had to wait because there were people in front of me waiting to be serviced. I was starving so I didn't let this deter me. Plus I figured she was stressed. So I waited a few more minutes. Finally she comes to me this time with a smile she asks me how she can help me. I asked for a menu. My quickly figured out what I wanted to eat and gave her my order. After this she was more attentive and nicer overall. The food took a little longer than expected to receive but nothing too outrageous. I ordered "Desayuno a tu gusto". This is what we know of has two eggs your way. I ordered them scrambled with ham. Breakfast comes with your choice of ham, bacon, sausage , coffee with milk, Cuban toast, and either french fries or House potatoes or tater tots. It was worth the wait. Everything was delicious. Looks are deceiving. From the outside this location looks like that hole in the wall place with a shabby interior but with good food. Well, Rinconcito is almost that, but with a nice interior and very good food. This was my son's favorite Cuban restaurant when he went to The U and lived in the area. We were both back in the area and of course he wanted to go back. I had never been so did not know what the inside looked like or the quality of the food. We went around 11 so I had a breakfast and my son had a lunch order. I got the western omelette and he ordered the Vaca Frita. Both were well prepared. Black beans done correctly. Zero stars. This is NOT the same Rinconcito of previous years! I frequented the old venue every time I was in Miami visiting family because it was on my route and conveniently located for everyone to meet up. The food was good and the service too; it was what you'd expect from a local Cuban restaurant. It was always nice to see the familiar wait-staff. I was really disappointed when they closed last year. Thus, when I learned they had remodeled and were open again, I went in for my usual cafe con leche and tostada to go. I was the only customer there, and the woman taking my order had her phone in her bra on SPEAKER the entire time. It was so loud, we were unable to converse. Yep - she couldn't hear what I was saying, and I wasn't sure if she was talking to me or to the person on the phone. Beyond unacceptable, even for Miami standards. I won't tell you how long it took to get my order because it was insane. And the prices? Ridiculous for the portion. Again, NOT the same Rinconcito, and I'll never go back. Period. I've probably passed by El Rinconcito close to a million times and we had never tried it. A neighbor recommended their weekly orders for dinner and we also gave it a try. We've been getting their dinner meals ever since then! The menu has plenty of options for you to choose from on a daily basis. This is definitely a hole in a wall place that only the locals know! We decided to come here because the wait at Havana Harry's was way too long. Little did we know, we stumbled upon a gem! The menu was huge and they have specials everyday of the week. I went with the chimichurri steak since that was what the waitress recommended. I got plantain and salad as the side. The portion here is HUGE. The steak was perfectly medium rare without me telling them, and the chimichurri sauce was fresh. I also got to try a little of my friend's chicken steak which was amazing as well, and the flans were delicious (both traditional and coconut). I met for lunch here. The place is packed which is a good sign and the portions are really big. I got a chicken salad maybe not the best pick for a Latin restaurant. The salad was pretty bland. The chicken was tender. My husband got a steak, I tried it, it was good. The service was a bit slow but to their credit the place was jam packed. They had specials for every day. I also got a cafe con leche... they serve a glass of milk and a small pitcher of espresso, no sugar is added but there was a sugar shaker at the table. Prices were very good. They got a 1 star because there's no zero. Everything was late to the table and wrong. Food ok because it was eggs and Cuban bread which is hard to mess up. But!!!! They had our bill wrong because they didn't give us everything we ordered such as 10 croquetas and one of the cafe con leches. So when we sent back for another bill without those things included they came back with a bill without those things but get this, with the same total amount $. YES, they actually edited the bill and some of the prices on the items to get the same amount owed at the end. WOW, unethical and th#€t much? Run and pass this place. El Rinconcito is a Cuban inspired restaurant located on the boarder of the Coral Gables. This restaurant is small with limited parking but keeps that authentic Cuban cafeteria feel. I usually dine in for breakfast and it's always a battle on what I want to order, (I love Cuban food) lol. Croquetas are definitely a must, but as for a meal it's either between the Bistec a caballo or scrambled egg whites mixed with turkey or ham. As for a side you have to order the house potato's. These are fantastic they have a particular taste that Cubans keep a secret. I have dined in for lunch and you can go wrong with a steak sandwich or chicken breast with arroz moro and maduros. Quality of the food was a 3, but the price makes it a solid 4. I was staying at the four points Sheraton for a business trip and the receptionist recommended this place as she just had lunch there. The restaurant is a hole in the wall, but is popular among the locals. For dinner, I got the special of the day. For $12.99, I got the bistec de rinonada, and malangas and plantains for 2 sides. The steak itself was average (tasted just like a slab of cooked meat), nothing to write home about but the portion size was huge! The small side of salsa it came with helped cut the fatty taste from the steak. I liked the malanga a lot. It was my first time trying it. It basically tastes like a potato but it came with this vinegar-ish sauce that went very well with it. The plantains were amaaaazing! Perfectly grilled such that the outside wasn't too charred and the inside very juicy and sweet. It was so good that I went back again the next day for breakfast. For less than $7, I got the egg whites with ham and veggies, cafe con leche, and buttered bread. The portion size was huge again! The vegetables tasted very fresh and the house potatoes it came with were tasty (I'm usually not even a potatoes fan). The cafe con leche was excellent. I wanted to try the cuban coffee and orange juice too, but alas I couldn't fit it all in. If you're in a rush, they also have a take-out window where you can get empanadas/coffee. I don't profess to be an expert on Cuban food by any stretch my experience being limited mostly to LA area restaurants including Porto's. Anyway was in the area and needed lunch so saw the four stars and gave it a try. Parking is a challenge. Service was fine but the servers didn't speak much English. Just tried the cubano sandwich and was a bit dissapointed mainly because there was just too much melted cheese. Being lactose intolerant I was hesitant to eat so much cheese. I decided to come here for early lunch- you go in and seat yourself anywhere you want. Amazing servers and customer service. The people working here are really friendly and helpful. To start with they give you free bread soaked in butter- it wasn't anything special. I decided to get the chicken steak with a side of plantains and yuka fries. The chicken steak was great but I have had better plantains before. You get a good portion size for the price you pay. I could have easily shared it with someone but I was too hungry and lazy to save it for later. The menu has food items divided by days- each day has a speciality food entree. Servers immediately come over to greet you and give you a menu. Menu is huge with so many different options to choose from, great variety -- they even have daily specials. Free bread comes to the table as soon as you order, ok quality but fast service. Menu portions are extremely generous and you definitely get your money's worth. You're not getting the 5 star high end restaurant quality but everyone knows that before walking in to this hole in the wall and accepts it. For the price and portions, food is great by the way!! Don't let the other review discourage you from eating here. Overall, nice authentic place -- I'll definitely return! Met Nicole here with the babe for lunch on my second time touring this place. It's a few minutes walk from work and the Douglas metro. Food here is inexpensive with daily specials. It's a little run down and it does get busy which slows service. If you need service you need to be a bit more vocal and flag down your host a bit more than you might usually expect to. It doesn't help that the restaurant is right next to Bird Road with several car dealers including the Collection. Patrons might endure the occasional ear splitting pitch coming from exotic high octane guzzling hyper cars speed by during test drives. On the other hand if you like watching that sort of thing, perhaps this is just the spot! We ordered a couple of cafe con leches and salads with chicken and churasco steak. Landed at this Cuban joint nearby to a place where my car was been serviced. I was hesitant, since Cuban restaurants add pork, meat and cheese to everything. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Cuban food in Miami generally SUCKS. El Rinconcito El Chele, formally known as Nena's Cafeteria, does NOT suck however. So why, in a town that is largely inhabited by Cuban and Cuban-Americans have such lousy Cuban eateries?? My friend Esther S. explained it simply like this: In most "Cuban" Restaurants the cooks aren't actually Cuban! So yes, I find this to be the most logical answer to the question that has bothered me in the many years searching for good Cuban food. The previous proprietor of this spot was actually Cuban and almost everyone who has eaten there told me it was the best place to eat Cuban food. I never got to eat there though, they only served breakfast and lunch. Lame. One day I finally got to try it, after many years of trying to make it in time before they closed.. I took the back entrance where the majority of the parking is, walked in and to my surprise the name had changed. It figures, but I gave it a try anyway. I was told that the original cooks still worked here, that Nena sold the place to retire but the food is still the same. The thing they changed the most: the hours! They are now open for dinner! Since I had no basis of comparison from what was here before I waited for my 2nd trip to write this review. Yes, I can say the food is good! Real good. My first trip consisted of Masas de Puerco (Fried pork chunks) which were full of flavor and were moist. This is the dish most places get it wrong. Today's trip was to try the Vaca Frita (crispy shredded beef) and it too was delicious. My side dishes on both trips were the same: Moros rice and Tostones (fried plantain) The Moros was tasty and moist as well.. another thing that most places get wrong. The Tostones were perfect on both occasions, another difficult feat. There's only one problem now.. I moved away from the area and now have to travel twice the distance to get here!! Oh well, such as life.. sometimes you have to go a little out of the way to get what you really want. read more

This little Cuban spot is convenient if you are staying at the Four Points about a block away. It has the same prices as Little Havana which is about a 15 minute drive away, and the food is pretty good. Came here for breakfast and was satisfied for about $7. The space is a little tight because it gets busy. I felt like I was sharing a seat with the guy behind me. I got a ham omelette which comes with free cuban bread and cafe con leche, and my girlfriend got a sausage sandwich. Not the best food I had and the sausage was bland, but I'd definitely come back just for the coffee and try the steak and eggs/lunch. I'll tell you I definitely needed some peanut butter with how jelly I got when I saw another table get the steak and eggs... it looked huge and delicious! So we picked this place on our way home from a day visit to Miami, looking for something cheap, and on the first visit, it blew us away. The palomilla, the appetizers, and especially the masas de puerco. Since then we've eaten there every single visit we have to Miami on our way home, and every dish is fantastic, even a couple of the seafood dishes we've had. Food definitely feels homemade. Not your typical cuban greasy food, i.e. the rice is so shiny when you sometimes eat it at other cuban places. The sauce of the ropa vieja looks natural, does not look with lots of flavor and stuff put into it. Ropa vieja special with two sides at $6.00!! Can't beat that! When you see my photos, I think you will agree that the food here LOOKS fantastic. However, the taste/quality does not match its appearance. I was craving a juicy steak, so I ordered the Baby Churrasco ($12). It comes with two side orders; I chose Vegetables and Black Beans. I was served toasted garlic bread while I waited for my meal. I was so excited when they brought out my order ... two plates full of food which LOOKED amazing. It may have looked like a "5" but it tasted like a "3." My vegetables were not hot; they were almost cool, even, and somewhat soggy. The churrasco was thinner than usual and lacked any "wow" factor. I was very hungry so I cleaned my plates. I felt that the price was rather reasonable ... I paid $15 total inc. tax & tip. (No beverage.) However, if I had paid MORE ... say, $20 ... then I would have to rate it a "2." Service was ok. I'm a huge steak guy, so the steak wasn't the greatest but it was good. Also came with some fried eggs. It's now Rinconcito Superlatino 4. Its clean inside, high volume at times due to the location. The ladies inside are very nice despite the running they do. Sometimes the men that come in here can be extremely rude to them when placing their orders. I got the breakfast with 2 eggs, bacon, house potatoes (even though the menu says tater tots, they were NOT tater tots), tostada, and a café con leche for $5.99. The food came our hot, the tostada could of used more crisp. The eggs were perfectly over easy like I asked. You can tell they are the cheap, buy at bulk eggs with the low quality fluorescent yellow yolk . The potatoes felt pre-cooked and soggy and lacked flavor. The bacon was perfectly crisp! The cafe con leche was not as good. I don't like when they have the milk on the heat stainless steel container instead of steaming the milk to order. It takes away from the authenticity of the cafe con leche Cuban style. I wish they would make it to order for at least the ones dining inside. Overall, for $6 it felt like $6. This rinconcito is a hole in the wall. However, do not under estimate the "look" of the place because they have some great cooking. Whenever, i'm sick and i can't have grandma's food just go there it's essentially the same. Now my grandma is Cuban so that is the kind of food you'll be expecting. Home cooked (practically) cuban food. People are nice (try to speak some spanish if you go), the prices are incredible for what you're getting and back to the food.. it's home cooked cuban/latin food. Everything from rice and beans, breaded chicken breast, steak, plantains made in various ways. They of course have pastries and cuban coffee. Plus some amazing deserts. Like i said dont be discouraged by the "look" of the place and go try some good cooking. read more

So, we're in my hometown of Miami (I fled when I was eighteen and will never call it home again) for the unfortunate marriage of my brother to a Midwestern girl (blond, big boobs). I myself married a Midwestern girl so I guess I can't hold it against him. I digress... So to apologize for the long trip from our now-native California, I promised my new bride an authentic Cuban breakfast, much needed after getting drunk at the rehearsal dinner (family feud in its infancy still required liquid courage to endure). So we took a cab - surprisingly cheap in this expensive town - the mile and a half from our hotel to this tiny hole-in-the-wall place where I used to purchase coladas for my teachers when I was in high school across the way at Gables (yes, I was that student). All I remembered was being terrified to order in Spanish because no one speaks English here (and I speak very little gringa-spanish...). But we were pleasantly surprised. There's no menu, just the whiteboard on the wall with specials and an oral history of traditional Cuban breakfast: ironed Cuban bread with butter, to dip into the amazing cafe con leche, eggs however you would like, your choice of meat, and french fries. The papas fritas was weird - I was expecting some frijoles negros - but it worked for hangover remedy. The fried eggs were perfect, and I ate everything with gusto, mopping up the yolk with bread until it was all gone. We were chastised for eating "American" ham croquettes the night before so I ordered a pair of these real Cuban ones to go, which had been freshly made, with a colada (I sincerely missed this perfect crema, pre-sweetened Cuban coffee made with Cafe Bustelo). Altogether we spent only $15. Amazing deal. Stupidly cheap. I wholeheartedly recommend Nena's, for the real Miami experience. Just make sure you bring someone with a few words of Spanish to get your order across to the sweet, chubs, cute waitress. She won't even make fun of your gringa accent. read more

MMmmMMMM...there is something about Cuban food that just has forever etched a place in my heart. Not being of Cuban decent, I never had this growing up except for the bocaditos and pastelitos at birthday parties. I moved near this place last summer and have been wanting to check it out ever since. I finally got to come here not once, but twice within the span of weeks. My first trip was for lunch and I have to say that while I didn't grow up on Cuban, as a young adult several friends and boyfriends were from Cuban families and I have had some good down home Cuban cuisine. This place is by far the closest I have come to finding that outside of those homes. The fricasse I ordered was absolutely scrumptious, to the point that I couldn't stop eating even though I was full! I also got to sample the picadillo which I think I will have to order the next time around. MMMmmmMMMMM. On my second visit I came for breakfast...oh the tostada, so perfectly buttered and begging to be dipped in the yolk of my fried eggs....oh, how I love breakfast. And they do it QUITE well here. In fact, I am afraid of becoming quickly addicted so I have avoided driving by here in the mornings now! Of course I cannot review a Cuban establishment and forget to mention the almighty coffee. They do a spectacular job, and that says a lot coming from me because my homemade Cuban coffee has become somewhat famous in my small circle. It's at the intersection of 38th Ave. and Bird Rd., halfway to Ponce from US 1 on Bird on the north side of the road. Park in the back, there's an entrance in the back. They have a Vaca Frita to auction off your abuela for. Breakfast is the bomb too. All the huevos in havana. If you are cuban, or you're dating a cuban, or have ever been a friend to a cuban, and have NOT gone to nena's - you have to get your ass over there! How is it that this place has never been yelped?
