Nutty and not so friendly since the new owner moved in a few years back. She is not community minded at all, everything is about paying, where before Joel and folks would fill up yr tires, and recognized you and yr car and grateful. She also has trouble with scheduling. Several times they have fixed a flat tire for me very quickly! Just beware that this isn't a STAR station for smogging. I found that out the hard way and wasted $78 because it's not what the DMV required. Now I have to go somewhere else to get another smog test done. Just keep that in mind. read more

A nice lady helped me, and they knocked out my smog check in no time. You have to get there before 1PM; I was running late and got there at 1:05, no problem at all. It took 20 minutes. With the cost of sending in the info, it came to around $78. I'll go here from now on. read more

Great service in a pinch! We had a slow leak in a relatively new tire. I took it in on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. They found the nail quickly. By the time I got out of the bathroom five to ten minutes later they had the wheel back on the car already fixed. 25 bucks. Great guys, honest, fair old style repair. read more

Terrible place! I brought my Subaru in for a low level radiator. The mechanic said it was definitely a radiator leak and he replaced it. I picked up the car, paid $589.00 and drove away. Guess what? Same problem, overheating as I drove away so I brought it back. I was then told by "Tom" the mechanic that it was a bad radiator replacement, it was a defect from the factory. He then replaced it again and I picked up the car, drove it away. Guess what? Yup, Same problem- overheating and drive it back to Rhino the same day. This time it sat a few days and when I called they acted as if I were bothering them. They then kept the car for two whole weeks, no calls and after attempting to find the actual problem they now say it's a head gasket leak and I am out of luck, and I am out of my $589.00. Also, when I first brought in the car, I filled up the tank from their pumps and when I picked the car up still with the original mechanical issue it had absolutely no gas. I mean someone actually had to literally suck the gas out of the the full tank to make the needle go so low and there is no way they could have driven the car a whole full tanks worth of gasoline.These folks are rude, I'll mannered and con-artists. I am in the process and writing reviews so that others in the community do not go there. DO NOT buy or pay for ANYTHING from Rhino Fairfax. A complete rip- off and waste of time and money. read more

After a couple of gas fills here my 2013 Hyundai turbo could no longer climb a hill faster than 15 mph, just struggling all the way. Filled half the tank up at shell and the engine is back in business. Direct correlation to the gas here. Pretty disturbing. Same as everyone else. Wish I checked here first. SMOG test rip off. Replaced my battery and went in for smog. It failed because the computer was not ready since I just replaced battery. They knew this, and "ran the test" anyway. It failed and I had to pay $65. They could not explain anything. The mechanic never called. They will not run another test for free as many places do if you fail. They want another $65. Don't support a business like this. Rino, you can message me and invite me back to make this right. I think this is the first oil change I have ever had without trying to be sold extra crap that I don't really need (think jiffy lube). With tax the total was $30.79 which is pretty impressive for this area. Service was impeccible and fast (less than 20 minutes) I felt comfortable and non intimidated by the auto know it all types. A very nice woman was running the show, they were going to close in half an hour but went ahead and did ours without any hassle. I will be going back Monday for this infamous California Smog Check, I will keep you posted.. update: I had a smog check today and in less than half an hour and $78 later I was finished! Only one experience with them so far, but 25 minutes for a smog certificate, from start to driving out of the lot? With the basics (oil level, coolant, etc.) checked out? Awesome. Nice family business. They seem honest, direct, friendly and warm. They carry a line of locally-manufactured automotive oils (Amtecol) that are a little-known but cost-effective and very high quality product. Who would have thought? I was dissappointed. I read the reviews and called them to have a simple 50,000 mile service on my car. The lady who answered sounded friendly and made an appointment for me to drop off the car. When I got there, she wasn't around and the guy at the counter seemed really confused. I had to go through a lot of detail with him to explain what I wanted and then when I asked him for a price he estimated $200-$250, way more than what I expected. I went down the street to another place and they only charged me $130 and were much more professional. They probably do good work and maybe it would not have cost as much as the guy estimated, he really didn't seem to know what he was talking about, but they seemed really disorganized and unprofessional. read more

Rino Automotive is a friendly, honest auto repair shop. All the employees are friendly and care about their work. They have always diagnosed and fixed my car issues in a day or two. Work is good, never an issue with what they do. The mechanics, especially Tom will talk you through the work, show you the parts. Oil changes and smog testing are reasonable too. The only time they turned down working on my car was when I had blown the head gasket and they wouldn't repair the motor because they wouldn't warranty it. At least they were honest. I live in Fairfax and it's nice to have such a great service in walking distance. read more

Maybe it's not entirely their fault as they have to do the bidding of the State of California for smog checks. It's a scam. And they seem to not mind one bit. My car passed the test but the on-board diagnostic (OBD) was "not ready" to test. So I have to pay 55.00 for something that should have aborted the test initially, even though emissions were a pass. They completed a test that the car did not participate in? The car told the testing computer "I'm not reset, I'm not ready" but they completed the test anyway? Very complicated. Makes no sense. What is NOT complicated is they did not abort the test and help me understand how to reset the OBD. What is NOT complicated is how they refused to explain or give my car back without paying. What is NOT complicated is how they were unable and unwilling to explain what the reset procedure is. They said drive it "for days" which I already did beforehand. They also gave incorrect advice for my particular car. What is NOT complicated is apparently I have to try to reset the OBD and pay 55.00 again for a maybe maybe-not result. What is NOT complicated is they refused to check that FIRST next time, to avoid another successful fail test due to arbitrary system reset not being ready and paying another 55.00 for a pass but no pass. WTF? They CHOOSE to be in the California Smog Test Regime and are totally okay with letting consumers fork over money without explaining or helping. Just take the money. read more

I'm so sold on this place. The owners are super friendly, the service is prompt and professional, and, as Stacey said, they are family run and very honest. I generally come here for tire service and smaller repairs (larger repairs can get rather expensive), and I've never had to wait a long time, even when there are many other customers. Used them for a smog check. I called ahead to check they weren't busy - they weren't. They were ready for me when I arrived and started work right away. Told me it would take 25 mins, so I popped across the road to Fairfax Lumber to buy some DIY supplies I needed. Agree with other reviewers - people who run this place are extremely nice. I had a radiator replaced here on my '91 honda and the cost was very reasonable. HOWEVER later in 2010 my car wouldn't start and I took it here. After seeming very confused and checking a lot of other things (they removed and threw away a BRAND NEW fuel filter without asking me and replaced it with a cheaper one which they then charged me for) they said it was the distributor and got a (supposedly) brand new one. A few days later, at the end of a long work day in Emeryville my car would not start again! After taking it to my old mechanic I found out it was because they'd used the coil from my old distributor - which my old mechanic said is not done! Can't believe I paid to get stuck a SECOND time. I am prompted to finally write this negative review because now, two years later, the car has died twice AGAIN - once (terrifyingly!) in the middle of the golden gate bridge and (luckily) the second time in my driveway. My mechanic has now replaced the only other part in the distributor - the ignition wire. There's no reason why this should go bad so quickly - I asked my mechanic if they thought Rino also used the old ignition wire and while they obviously don't want to bad mouth another shop they said yes that might be the case. Really nice people or not - this is completely unacceptable. I will NEVER take my car there again or recommend to anyone. ZERO stars. read more

They often show me what they are doing so I know they aren't replacing parts that work or billing for things they didn't do. If you want a mechanic you can trust, a bill you can afford and to be treated well, then this is your garage. There's also no attitude when you drive in with a modest car. read more

Just like Jim C. and Joanne B. Rino took $55 from my husband today when his car failed the smog test because the OBD had no records. That was because the battery was dead and recharged only yesterday. Rino has a scanner which had it been used before the test would have shown there were no records. Rino told my husband to drive the car 100 miles, come back and he would then use the scanner to determine if the car was ready to retest. If then it was it would coast another $55. He will have the car tested somewhere else. read more

Rip off. I had a tire that was losing air and was told that I could get it patched up at Rino for $20. Went and paid $20 and they claimed they patched it but my tire pressure alarm went off again the very next morning at 5 am when I was driving myself to the Airporter and I had to leave my car parked for 4 days so it was totally flat when I got back super late at night...not cool. Went back to Rino today and he said he did not patch it, he only "plugged" it, whatever that means... and suggested I go to a tire shop. Why didn't he say that last week?? Took it to Cain's Tires and they removed the screw that was in there causing the air leak, and fixed it for $35. So I paid $20 to Rino for nothing. They didn't take the screw out, even though they knew it was there... Didn't bother to tell me that it was still in there, so I was driving around thinking it was fixed... took my money just to fill my tire with air which I could have done myself... Should have just gone to Cain's in the first place! read more

Rino auto repair broke a part off in my engine and will not tell me what part they purchased to fix it and what they purchased to fix it. The owner will not disclose the part or give me a receipt for it now I must take it to another auto repair and pay another $45 to have them tell me if it was fixed properly. I took my car in here for a smog check when the check engine light was on, not knowing that it would affect the test. They didn't tell me to get that fixed first. They took my money for the smog check and it failed. No repair. No refunds. Afterwards I learned that it couldn't pass with the check engine light on and I should have been told that in the first place. read more

I took my truck to get smogged last year at Rino. The truck needed some typical work done on the emissions system, the work was done and the truck passed the smog test, all is good, the truck ran perfectly. The next day the truck ran poorly. After taking it back the mechanic said it needed an exhaust manifold gasket. I was not convinced as it would or should have been noticed the day before. After taking it to two other places, two hundred dollars later, no one could find the problem. Finally took it to a shop in Santa Rosa. They found a piece of felt or something like that inside the carb blocking the butterfly valve slightly which made the truck run poorly. Ok, someone left a piece of material that was used to clean the carb inside of it. Like when a surgeon leaves a sponge inside a patient, things happen. However, it was sloppy work in my opinion. Now it gets weird: I left a new Kindle reader in the glove compartment. After picking up the truck I noticed the Kindle was missing (I am not blaming Rino for the missing Kindle) Leaving something worth stealing in the middle of Fairfax was an obvious mistake, i admit that and let it go. But, it kept nagging at me for months, so I went back just in case they put it aside for safekeeping. After asking if they had put it aside for safekeeping (no they hadn't) the mechanic said, and I quote "are you sure the work was done here, do you have the receipt for the work to prove we worked on the truck?" "Maybe you're mistaken and the work was done down the street?" "When exactly did you bring the truck in for repair?" He tried to convince me I didn't remember where I had the work done! I had never experienced anyone try to weasel out of responsibility like that before. I sort of smiled and thought how creative he was, rather than use some other lame excuse. This sort of behavior is not acceptable and makes it so I do not trust Rino auto repair. Let the buyer beware. read more

Took my truck there for a smog test.They test it and does not pass.They say it timing is off .It will be 60 dollars.I ask,can you time it so it wii pass..the excuse is it at 22 degrees and it needs to be at 10 and we can't do it.It is an auto repair station i thought why is that so difficult.I pay the guy taking the money and am walking away thinking whats the problem as they are pulling the next truck in to smoged.I look back and the guy taking the money and the mechanic?are chuckling looking at me walk away.Thanks for the great service! read more

Had some very suspicious experiences at this mechanic that cost me a lot of money. Not sure if they were a case of incompetence or intentional bad business. I've since heard the same from several other people. I would avoid it. There are two other excellent mechanics in Fairfax so there is no reason to go here. DANGER! I had my oil changed here on my Ford Fusion. About the time it was due for another oil change, the oil pressure light came on. I thought that was odd considering the car was only a few years old, and that I change the oil regularly. So I took it to another shop for the oil change and they informed me that whoever put the last oil filter on, did it with the wrong tool, and partially crushed it all the way around and apparently punctured the filter. This explains why my oil pressure light came on -- I had been losing oil through a small puncture in the filter. The entire underside of my car is now covered with oil. I showed Rino my receipt from the oil change they had performed and explained the situation, and despite having been a customer for years, they denied any wrongdoing, took no responsibility and offered nothing. Changing the oil and filter is a VERY simple procedure -- I've done it many times myself. If they can't do that properly, they should really just stick to selling gas. read more

Won't go back for repairs. We've been customers for years and when we got ready to sell our vehicle, they had replaced the battery with one that was the wrong size, one of the back brake shoes was on backwards and it was a quart low on oil. They've always been very nice, but getting the basics right is too important. read more
