This review is very overdue as their service impacted my teeth years later. Overall: they are very friendly and accommodating. Dr. Rios has always been great the handful of times he worked on my teeth. Dr. Martinez, however, could have provided better service and quality of care. Just to put this out there, this was some time ago when I went in for a cleaning and Dr. Martinez completely missed my bottom left teeth. I noticed afterwards at home that I had some buildup still present in between my gums and teeth, so I had to come back on a different day for the job to be completed. My review is mainly for the retainers I received at this location. From the day I received them, I expressed I found it strange that the top of the retainer did not sit on the roof of my mouth, as my previous set of retainers (from a different location) did. She stated it was fine as long as I felt the retainers snug. A few days later my retainers were no longer snug and would fall out of place. I called to address my concern and I was told I would have to pay a consultation fee to have them tightened. No other dental clinic charges a consultation fee if the retainers become loose within days of receiving them. I then asked to receive a call back from Dr. Martinez so I could ask if this fee could be waived, as I had just received them days ago. I never got a call back from her and I went to a different office where they took care of me for a fraction of that price. Years went by and I ended up losing the retainers I received from this clinic, so I went back to my original orthodontist where I was informed that the retainers I had been using for years shifted my teeth out of their original placement, and that those retainers should have been sitting on the roof of my mouth. I'm overall disappointed in the lack of care and quality I received from this location. read more

And I am more than satisfied with the wonderful work of Dr. Rios. I will continue all of my dental work in the future, hopefully just cleanings , with Rio Mar Dental. Been coming to Rio Mar since I moved to Fullerton about 4 years ago. There is never a long wait when I come visit. My whole family comes here, including my 2 small children. They are very gentle and I've never had a bad experience with pain. I had a wisdom tooth pulled here that was already fully out and the procedure went great. Very minimal pain with the healing process. They also referred me out to get the other two wisdoma out which required surgery but thankfully were covered through my insurance. Wonderful staff. Waited under 10 minutes with an appointment to see Dr. Martinez @ 10:30AM on a Wednesday. After I was called in, I was sent to the x-ray room. The dental assistant was kind and conversational/easy to talk to. I came in for a cleaning and filling. Dr. Martinez is amazing in what she does. Her passion for her career shines through as she is always explaining every step, uses a gentle hand, and assures comfort. She always asked if I was ok every 10 minutes or so, which was so reassuring. I have honestly never felt this comfortable at a dental office before. The dentist is far from my favorite place and always shoots my anxiety through the roof. My previous one never explained what she was doing and would just do her job. Dr. Martinez showed me photos and explained what was going on with my teeth before proceeding, which is comforting because it sucks when you have to guess what they're going to do and can't talk with a bite block in your mouth lol. I found Rio Mar Dental after having a horrible experience at a different dental office in my hometown of Bellflower that was recommended by 1-800 dentist. In contrast, Rio Mar was a breath of fresh air all the way around. The x-rays we're not painful or excessively uncomfortable. The Dr. who worked on me was very professional and informative, and worked very hard to make my filling procedure as pain free as possible. This turned out to be kind of difficult because for some reason, the tooth nerve in question didn't want to respond to the lidocaine, and I ended up getting about 5 shots to get adequately numb, but even then the nerve was sensitive. In response to this, she wisely figured out that she could just remove my broken filling by prying it out around the back side of my molar, and then she just had to do minimal drilling and replace the filling. Genius! I was pretty sore from all the shots, but that's not her fault, I just have an unusual nerve connection somewhere so it's tricky to numb that tooth. It ended up taking a couple of hours total for the x-rays, cleaning, and filling, but I am so happy to have that filling fixed and my teeth cleaned. It had been about 8 years since I last went to the dentist, and the staff at Rio Mar didn't guilt trip me or make me feel uncomfortable at all. In fact, its one of the best dentist experiences that I've ever had, and I HATE going to the dentist. Bottom line, if you're looking for a great dentist, look no further. read more

I was wary when I arrived as parking* was in an alley behind the building, but I was reassured when I stepped into a facility that was evidently well kept. I chose this dental office for my girls for very specific reasons I was excited about, but I made a decision to leave this office after our last visit in September. This is why... 1. I was not allowed to go in with my girls initially. This is an issue as they are 3 and 5. My 5 year old is extremely anxious and this was NOT a good way to start off her visit. Had I known this, I would have prepared her for it. Instead, I was not not informed and this was so abrupt. She was so afraid without me that she ended up urinating on herself. She didn't even tell me this until after we left the visit. NOT acceptable. Luckily my three year old was fine, but she's 3! Parents should always be present! 2. It turned out that my 3 year had two cavities (one more advanced than the other) and two baby root canals were being recommended. I had taken her in to this same dentist six months prior and mentioned this particular area as a concern, but was just told we would continue to watch it. I feel we could have prevented the cavity from advancing at this point. The dentist spoke with me about one of the cavities while in the office and she recommended a baby root canal for that tooth. However, when the receptionist called me to provide me with details about the treatment plan, the plan called for two root canals (both front teeth). After looking at the x-ray and consulting with two other dentists, there is absolutely no need for a root canal on both teeth. This was very infuriating and I feel this dentist takes a very aggressive/invasive approach to treatment when other options are available - this is my THREE year old! Sedation if it's not needed? No thank you! Overall, this office needs to address some practices... 1. Children under a certain age should always have a parent (per the America Academy of Pediatrics) 2. Better communication about the treatment plan and alternate options 3. Less aggressive/invasive approach (especially when dealing with toddlers whose teeth are not permanent) As mentioned, thank goodness for my PPO plan, I ended taking her in to my dentist who referred me to a local pediatric dentist. This new dentist was very thorough, gentle, and provided me with three options for my daughter. He let ME decide which route to go to address the cavity and explained the pros and cons of each. I ended up choosing a less invasive option to treating the cavities. This is in lieu of sedating my little one and having her get two baby root canals. After all, these are baby teeth that will fall out soon. No need to sedate her and subject her to two unnecessary root canals. read more

They have a website where you are able to print all the documents they need you fill out before you get there, so that you can sit comfortably in the waiting room. I have been terrified of dentists after a bad experience years ago and have been avoiding dentists out of fear. I ended up cracking a tooth last week and I knew I would have to have it pulled. Last week I got an exam done and a teeth cleaning by Dr.Rios and they made me feel really comfortable. I have very bad anxiety and Dr.Rios recommended that I see a specialist that could better sedate me since I was so scared. The days after that exam it started to hurt more so I decided just to let him do the procedure instead of going outside to a different person and also because I had a good experience during my first appointment I felt more comfortable letting him just do it. I just got the tooth pulled today here. He did a fantastic job of making sure I didn't feel anything and the nurse that assisted him was great as well. The procedure wasn't even close to being as scary as I thought it was going to be. Lifted my fear of dentists.Definitely will be coming back here :) read more
