You know if they offer big red it must be good!!! Barbacoa practically melts in your mouth. I must have been one of the first customers since they were just opening but that didn't frustrate them as they welcomed me like family and immediately showed me the specials. Only thing missing is the hot Cheetos. read more

Actual purchased on Sunday Oct.2, as a local SA the crave for barbacoa always there, however the choices are not. After the Shipley's donut routine. I was determined to locate good non saturated fatty barbacoa. Rios, a bit further than your regular taco run. Never the less, the drive was well worth it. The barbacoa was not greasy & the taste was spot on! Just the suffrage seasoning. Oh how I miss my barbacoa & Big Red. I ended up purchasing a package that included a slight discount plus a dozen of Spicy pork tamales. The good, barbacoa. Would definitely drive way over there again for barbacoa. The bad, the tamales would skip, I ate about 2. Seem to be filled with more masa than meat. Tamales were bland. Nothing to brag about. The chili seemed fresh & spicy. Corn tortillas not home made. Delicious! Love that this place is so conveniently located near my parent's place. The drive thru and in store order line are long on a Sunday but the lines move very fast due to efficient staff and good teamwork. I also love that social distancing markers are clearly visible which makes easy entry and exit out of the store. The barbacoa was tender and flavorful and of course paired well with big red, which they have a large fridge filled with for convenience at the start of the order line. The menudo was also delicious, just wished they had some chopped cilantro with it. Definitely recommend picking up some barbacoa from this little shop for your weekend family breakfast. read more

This "Hole in the wall" place is frightfully close to our residence hence it was deemed to check it out. They are open only on Saturday and Sunday from 7 to 12:30 only. I tried their barbacoa and was pleasantly surprised! It it tasty and delightfully gooey, just like barbacoa suppose to be. This takeout joint is very spartan, but do not be disappointed withe the decor, which does not exist. The barbacoa is spectacular, although the condiments could use some improvements. I just went there a few minutes ago and the tamales were gross. They were dark brown and had no flavor. Seemed like they were probably last weeks. NEVER AGAIN. I don't recommend. HEB tamales are way better than these. read more

I love this place so much. I love to get it every weekend for my boys and I. The line outside and inside goes by quick and they are efficient and kind. Best barbacoa in town. Except I was eating leftovers from yesterdays barbacoa and I found a hair at the bottom of the white tub. Maybe a pube or facial hair. So it would be nice if maybe the men there cover their beards or shave it cuz I don't want it on my food pls! read more

Wow....like omg wow! We went through the drive thru last week when we were hangry... usually never a good thing but there's always a first! Wow and wow...we were there 15 minutes before they closed so the tamales were sold out but we ordered the #1 which was barbacoa, a dozen tortillas and salad. No joke, it fed us for lunch, dinner and lunch the next day! All for like $14 I think? The tortillas are homemade and omg unbelievably delicious! The meat was super flavorful and not fatty at all. I've only had barbacoa a few times in El Paso and it was nothing like this. You win San Antonio. I will definitely be back and I'll bring anyone that comes to visit. The food is fantastic, the service is super friendly and you just can't beat the prices! We found ourselves a new go-to spot! read more

I've been craving barbacoa for a week. I finally found the best place! After a hard day of working night shift I came in to pick some up before getting home. The employees are absolutely a ray of sunshine. I walked in and each one of the greeted me with a good morning and genuinely asked about my day. They had free fresh coffee and donuts as well. The food was so good! The tortillas were warm and the barbacoa was perfect, not so greasy and not so much fat in it. Definitely felt at home there. read more

The Barbacoa was excellent. It wasn't greasy of fatty, but had that texture and flavor that you know when you have good barbacoa. The tortillas were some of the best I have had anywhere. The customer service was excellent and the speed of service was great. Had some menudo as well and it was really good. They answered all my questions with a smile and made the experience memorable for sure. I will definitely go back. read more

Let me start by saying we love Rios Barbocoa for the Barbocoa. It's always been delicious every time we have gotten it. BUT this past Sunday we went to try the carnitas for the first time. We went Sunday early morning to get 2 pounds to enjoy for dinner that night. Upon opening the 2 containers Sunday evening there was no meat in our containers. Just skins. I am incredibly disappointed and can not reach anyone at the location as they don't open until next weekend.. I never complain but we paid $20 for the meat torts and salsa and had nothing for dinner to eat because of this mistake. A young girl filled our containers and I'm not sure if she knew what she was doing or not but this is definitely a training opportunity for her. read more

I am overwhelmed at how awesome this place is. Barbacoa has become a staple in our Sunday mornings. This is by far one of the best barbacoa places I have ever tried. What makes me love it even more is the fact that there is a drive-thru, so I can whip out of bed on a Sunday morning to go pick this up for my family. Also, the service behind the counter is unbeatable. This is owned by a husband and wife team. They are awesome and totally friendly. I love how delicious the barbacoa is. The avocados are always perfect to make some guacamole at home. I just love this place. Come and try it, if you haven't already! You will not regret it. :-) read more

Ríos barbacoa is a Joke. They charge you for everything. I got the menudo, barbacoa, and tortillas. With a big red that was missing. I called and I over head the guy in the background say that it's not " his problem " ridiculous. You order the barbacoa and menudo and they give you nothing to add on. No cilantro, onions, jalapeño, and the charge you for the salsa. No pierdas tu tiempo. Don't waste you time at this horrible restaurant. read more

We saw all the 5 stars reviews on Yelps of the barbacoa, so we had to taste. We ordered the #1 special which consisted of 1 lb. of barbacoa, 10 homemade corn tortillas, and a small container of salsa verde for $12.99. We also ordered a small container of pico de Gallo and 16 oz. size of beans. Everything tasted good and there were enough meat to feed a family of four. So, $12.99 was definitely a good deal. However there was not enough salsa verde for everyone. This place is strictly carry out. No tables and chairs for in house dining. A very nice touch was free coffee for everyone. read more

It was probably our most favorite place that we ate while in San Antonio. The ambiance was great, beautifully decorated restaurant with great service. The cocktails were delicious so we had a few. I had made reservations to meet some friends here for brunch/lunch 1145 am on a Sunday. This place is bigger than it looks! There's seating at the main building, plus a huge outdoor patio seating area, and an entire other building beautifully decorated. The hostess was welcoming and friendly and our server was excellent. We were seated in the other building near the windows. The menu wasn't huge, but just right with a few lunch and brunch items. After debating for a while of what to order, I decided on the Texas Gulf Shrimp plate. Agua Fresca of the day per our server was strawberry pineapple. Our server was able to water mine down slightly- since it was very sweet, but love knowing that it was freshly made. Complimentary chips and salsa always a plus, and we were able to order some spicy salsa to accompany at no charge. My shrimp plate was delicious! 2 skewers of nicely cooked and seasoned shrimp atop salsa with perfectly cooked cilantro rice and a fresh leaf salad. A half slices avocado accompanied my plate. Oh how I love avocados. I thoroughly enjoyed my plate. The chicken al carbon was also a good choice - half a chicken that was juicy, not dry. The avocado toast was beautiful and the pecan salsa was quite interesting. The female performers during our brunch in the room, made it very hard for all of us to have conversations. The volume echoed loudly in the room, so it was very hard to speak and understand each other. Although a great idea, maybe outdoor patio area might be more suitable. Beautiful space, great service, good food.

I do wish that the curry was a little thicker, as the curry felt closer to a broth than the Thai curries I've had before. The service was great and the workers were really helpful in helping me decide what to get. You get to sit wherever you want and you just leave your dishes at the table. Restaurant was decorated in such a homey way. Good bbq and good flavors!

I can't say enough about this place. The food was great, and priced well. The owner was super friendly and knew the name of everyone in line besides me, which isn't surprising as it was my first time there. He took the time before I left to ask my name and shake my hand. He thanked me an said "God Bless." I couldn't be happier with my experience there. I for sure won't be going anywhere else for my barbacoa. I'm more than happy to spend my money here anytime and so should you! read more

This morning after a trip to Rio's on Huebner, I purchased a special. Later I called Rio's to share a concern I had with one of their products. The caballero I spoke with offered me no excuses, justifications,or blame. He immediately asked what HE could do to "rectify my inconvenience". Best barbacoa in town, it's always fresh and really meaty. Try out the tamales too if they haven't ran out for the morning. Want some menudo? Yep they got it. Make sure to grab some fresh avocados and a big red on the way out. Go support these guys! Super friendly, family owned business with excellent service and food. Feeling lazy? Get there before 11AM to ensure you'll leave with a bag full of amazing food! I'm hoping I/We can convince Isaac to open up a couple more days each week...as I can't seem to get enough of it on the weekend alone. Who says Barbacoa is only for the weekend?? :) read more

So, a compromise. If there were some way to indicate, we negotiate a 3.5 rating. And for the review. Mimi's is found at the corner of Vance Jackson and Babcock, nestled within several commercial operations that live and breathe there. There is plenty of parking in the lots. The taco shop has been in operation for at least 30 years, and Mimi, the original proprietor has ceded the business to her sons, and they continue neighborhood offerings to this very day. Marjan and I search for taco restaurants in every corner of our fair city: some are more upscale, some rather modest in character. But no matter, real treasures can be found in the most modest, and some ptomaine taverns can be found in the most elevated. Mimi's tends to the most modest. The entry is, in truth, shop worn. Think peeling paint, dated signage, unfinished floors, rough hewn counter. One or two tables for patrons, evidence that this is definitely a "take out" operation. Entering, there was some concern viewing the landscape, but also pasted on the counter: rating of "A" at its most recent review by the city health department!! The counter person was immensely welcoming, asking if we had visited previously. Behind the counter, the working kitchen was visible. Several employees hard at work filling orders...there were 4 or 5 patrons waiting for their take outs. This is an operation devoid of the niceties of appearance. The staff were in casual shirts, jeans. But readers, do not be deceived by appearance. We ordered bean and cheese, machacado, potato and egg and cheese and chicken fajita tacos...all to go. The impression: all were a bit laden with grease, so much so that Marjan had to absorb the grease of her machacado with Bounty. The tacos lacked a bit of salt, and the fajitas had a rather different spice that we had not experienced previously, a spice that Marjan didn't quite enjoy, but that I found tasty. The bean and cheese were laden with cheddar to the max. The flour tortillas were exceptional. Every taco was literally bursting at the seams with content. Our impression: this is a rather "homey" take on the treasured taco, not elevated, but warming to the palate none the less. I was reminded of the tacos that I had enjoyed at the colonias outside Saltillo in Mexico, one where one would be served less than cold beer, or perhaps mescal or pulque. I think the offerings would not satisfy every palate, but I would return, given my history with Mexican food of every type, growing up on the west side of our fair city.
