Why am I just now getting around to finally trying Ritual Coffee despite working within extended walking range of the original location? Sure I've had their coffee from places that serve their beans, yet I've never been to the real deal. Despite my tardiness, I'm glad I finally got around to it, especially in Napa's Oxbow Market while on vacation with my love. Ritual Coffee Just might be my new favorite place that's not named Timeless Coffee http://www.yelp.com/biz/... In fact, the Ritual latte might be as good or better. Especially depending on who you ask ;-) Although Timeless gets the nod due to their Vegan pastries kicking major ass! In fact, we had to bring in our own homemade Chloe Coscarelli cupcakes for a sweet treat since Oxbow doesn't offer much in that variety. Even without offering Vegan goodies, this coffee is excellent! We ordered the hand-pour coffee flight mainly because I've never seen a flight of coffee the way you get for beer or wine http://www.yelp.com/biz_... It is slightly steep at $10 for the flight but then again, so is their coffee if you get a full cup. Of the three different coffees featured in the flight, the Siberian Processing Experiment #1 was not only the best, but also the cheapest if you were to get a full pour over cup at "only" $3 per cup. What was a testament to how great their coffee is, my lil' coffee n00b normally only drinks her coffee the way I like my women, light brown with a touch of (soy) cream 'n sweetness. She ended up taking over the Siberian Experiment all to herself without creamer or sweetener. Ritual may have just earned themselves a convert! RCR-Oxbow feels like an outpost of SF artisan coffee culture cut-and-pasted into Napa City. Which is, of course, exactly what it is. That's good for coffee drinkers, but bad for those who haven't been to the Mission district mother ship first. If not, you're missing out on the ultimate Ritual experience. And for the intrepid coffee crusader, that's just not right. The whole point of Ritual (and Four Barrel-Valencia and Blue Bottle-Oakland) is that coffee-making is a RITUAL - it's about more than beans and baristas, it's about a place and a moment in time: freshly roasted beans from mere footsteps away, lines of patient drinkers, a quiet hush as espresso drinks are pulled and pour-overs are ground, weighed, and prepared with all the attention to detail of a chemistry lab. I'd be like going to downtown SF to drink Frog's Leap Zinfandel or Cabernet instead of the Rutherford location where the magic really and truly happens. Sure, it would taste the same, but it wouldn't BE the same. That said, it's really nice to have a coffee-drinkers outpost as high quality as Ritual in the Oxbow Market. For at least three reasons, this is a smart stop when in the lower Napa Valley: 1. Early opening hours. Grab a 7 am cap or latte before hitting the Silverado Trail. It's nice to be here before the market really gets going: the vibe is calm and relaxed and feels a little behind-the-scenes. Minimal wait times and lots of open tables to enjoy your coffee before the wine tasting gets underway. 2. There's also a Model Bakery in the market, so after the coffee, grab a muffin or scone or snack for the road. Sure, you could get your coffee at the bakery, too (they serve Blue Bottle), but why not do both? It's not like you're here in Napa every weekend. Better make the most of the time before the next quake hits. 3. Fresh beans. They may not roast here at Oxbow, but they're pretty close to SF and get lots of good whole beans from the main facility. Ritual is famous for finding microlots of rare and precious beans, so anytime you can leave with a bag for home, do it! At the other end of Napa, in Calistoga, there is a great local alternative - Yo El Rey - where the beans are roasted on site. So, Ritual up at the start of your trip and refuel with local roasted beans when up-valley, or get Blue Bottle at the main Model bakery location in St Helena. Coffee outposts aren't the same as the real thing, but that's OK. We all have to kiosk now and again. Good to know that Oxbow is open early and that the coffee up to SF standards. Sometimes that is all one needs to get a Napa Valley adventure successfully started. read more

Hipster wanna-be San Francisco girls that could care less about your experience. Marginal weak espresso. Nice selection of breakfast pastries and more heavy croissants (cheese, jalapeño, etc.) but they don't heat them up! I literally got a cold 'sandwich' croissant and they looked at me like I was crazy when I asked them to heat it up. Literally, all three girls gave me the dirtiest look like who do I think I am for asking them to heat up their croissant. Oh, and they definitely seem more interested in conversing behind the counter than trying to expedite the orders for their customers. In other words, don't expect to get a quick anything here. Met up with a friend here on an early weekday afternoon. The place was pretty packed, and I think she was lucky to find us a table to sit at. She had ordered a nitro brew coffee which she explained was a cold brew coffee infused with nitrogen. I ordered a cup of regular brewed coffee. I read the description on the coffee, wasn't anything on there that I would really want in a cup of joe, but I gave it a shot. I have never tasted a more bitter and sour tasting coffee in my life! Perhaps I'm not "coffee crazy" and I "can't appreciate real coffee" or whatever people want to say. But I like coffee to taste like I usually taste coffee: bold and dark, enough to be able to sweeten to my liking. Apparently there's no such thing as a dark roast here, so that might have been a hint to what I should have expected. Quite honestly, I would describe this to be a tea flavored coffee joint. People seem to like it, but it wasn't for me. Had to force myself to drink it every time, so I wouldn't feel like I wasted my money. Oh, and prices are high here. [Out-of-Towner Review] Clutch for your caffeine needs! Whether you're about to hop on the Napa Valley Wine Trolley or just browsing Ox Bow Market, this is the only real coffee spot in the entire Market. I think I did see another place sells coffee, but this is the ONLY dedicated strictly to coffee goodness. Obviously, coffee before wine! If you come in toward the front, don't fret...there is coffee, you just have to walk toward the 'back' and you'll be a happy camper. On Saturday I went for their regular coffee. Nothing fancy at all, just a regular pour before our adventure. It was tasty and kept me warm on our cool trolley ride to our first stop. I also added a little soy milk, which they will leave out if you ask for it, and some of their sugar. Their little condiments section is small in size, but has everything you'd need to decorate your coffee appropriately! Don't use their hippy straws though, they melt in the coffee, you gotta wait a bit for it to cool down :( On Sunday, I decided to treat myself and get an Soy Mocha. Theirs was superb, I'd suggest it to anyone who isn't accustomed to the likes of a sugar Starbucks version. It was just the right blend of mocha and caffeine for my liking. They don't have a huge menu of drinks, but they have the basics. The staff are laid back and seem to be busy, since they are the only 'coffee shop' in the entire Market. When it comes to coffee, I am a little snot. The coffee at this place reminds me of good old Italian coffee that you would get in a cafe' in Italy. Eh, this place was just OK to me! The concept is pretty similar to let's say, Blue Bottle Coffee, minus all the awesomeness. The coffee, the coffee, the coffee. That's what it's all about, but I've definitely had better than Ritual. I ordered a 12oz. double ristretto, soy latte. The sweetness and depth you normally get from ristretto shots was absent. Also, the shots weren't too potent. I will say that the foam and foam art was quite good! Soy foam is difficult for some baristas, but job well done at Ritual. Customer service from the register employee and barista was generic. Not much interaction and enthusiasm like you get from most of the independents! Smiles go a long way...just a recommendation. Didn't get to try any of the brew by the cup pour over coffees during this trip. Maybe I'll give them a second chance and try one next time. Ritual also sells French presses and brewing machines. No bakery items that I noticed here. Overall, this place has potential to be great, so I'll get them another try in the future. read more

My usual drink here is the drop coffee. This place treats drip coffee like it was one of the "fancy" drinks. The coffee beans are not ground until the order is placed. They have a cool contraption where they place a filter and allow the coffee to brew right into the cup. They have a nice variety of coffee beans to choose from and most are sourced from cooperatives. My favorite so far is the one from Kenya. I also like that they're conveniently located in Oxbow Market. I usually grab a coffee from here and then get some chocolates from Annette's! read more

First of all, I looked over all the items they have for sale and The Coach Store called to say everything is overpriced. You cannot seriously charge a person $35 for a ceramic one cup drip coffee maker, can you? I wanted so badly to be blown away, but I was underwhelmed. I ordered a simple cup of coffee, nobody else was in line and it took a good 12 minutes. Yes, I understand that drip coffee done this way takes time, but I'm here to say that I do it at home, at the office and it doesn't take that long. The coffee was served luke warm and I was driving back to SF so let's just say I was disappointed. The coffee tasted pretty good, I just can't get down with coffee that's not at least served hot. I stopped by here this past Saturday morning with my fiance looking to get my morning caffeine fix. My fiance went up and placed an order for two Americanos while I went elsewhere to place a food order. A few minutes later I joined my fiance to wait while we watched a barista make some chem ex coffee, After about 15 minutes of waiting and my pointing out that people that walked up long after us were getting their orders my fiance inquired about our drinks. After a little bit of sleuthing by a barista it was determined that someone else who had a later order for Americano's had taken our drinks. A couple of minutes later our drinks were finally ready. My Americano was definitely not worth the wait here as it was quite bit more bitter than I was looking for but nevertheless I was able to finish it. The bottom line for me is that I would probably head elsewhere before stopping by here again. Granted I know that it was not necessarily the baristas fault that our drinks got taken by someone else but that left a little bit of a bitter taste in my mouth...or was that the coffee? read more

It has that awesome super busy market feeling that I only got in the Chelsea Market in New York. We're getting coffee here every time we're nearby Napa. The baristas are always friendly and can make good recommendations to what you should get. Their coffee is awesome, I can't think of any time where I didn't get what I was expecting. I can't wait to return as the last time we've been we noticed that they had opened a second bar that has some experimental stuff going on, like the same coffee brewed in multiple ways to highlight differences and many more etc. read more

It appears that Ritual in the Oxbow market is now fully operational. It's a nice setup, in a good location at the north end of the main plaza. My wife and I went to Oxbow on a late Friday afternoon. This turned out to be a pretty good time to go, since hardly any customers were there, and the purveyors were in a talking mood. I had heard that Ritual had set up shop here, and I had also heard that Ritual in SF has the famous Clover coffee machine. I was very pleasantly surprised to see not one, but TWO Clovers in place at this new location. Wow, at $11,000 a pop, that's a new Prius in less than a cubic yard of space! Our nice lady behind the counter immediately took notice that we were gawking at the Clover machines. She offered up a sample half-cup for us to try. We also ordered another cup of one of the four other bean varieties she had that day. My wife got into a discussion with her about the beans, their origin, Ritual's approach to coffee, etc. From this, it was great to see someone so obviously passionate and knowledgeable about her products, and so willing to talk about them at length. We also learned that there are some bean trees that only yield a pound of coffee from a harvest, which is truly miniscule! Also, Ritual's philosophy appears to be more bean-focused, rather than roast-focused, giving Peet's as an example of the latter. As I had read in WIRED magazine, the Clover is meant to bring out some of the more subtle tones of the more exotic coffees, and that one's sensitivities to this are typically not up to the task until after a few cups. Definitely the case! Although it was good coffee, to me it was a bit sour. My wife liked hers, but I think after having drunk Peet's every morning for so many years, it will definitely take a few more cups to realize the full experience. Plus, I tend to 'candy up' my brew with cream and sugar, which is something that I tried not to do this time, hoping for the full experience. Nevertheless, Ritual is a great installment in this nice little marketplace, and it may be the last Ritual location to have Clover machines, since Starbucks bought out Clover in May of this year. The nitro cold brew coffee here is the stuff dreams are made of, or in my case, the stuff my coffee dreams are made of. I had gone off coffee for over a year and this was the first coffee I've had since and still the best I've had in quite some time. It is pricey at $5 for only a 4 oz pour, but it's rich and chocolatey and nicely foamy (do not put a lid on! it kills the scrumptiousness of the brew!). You can ask for a super sized 8 or 12 oz pour which is not that much more expensive. I had this every day I was in town and it never disappointed. Great coffee - served by apathetic hipsters. My friend and I were about to embark on a Napa Valley wine tour and needed a quick pick-me up. We hit up Ritual Coffee Roasters at Oxbow Market. I ordered a macchiato, my friend ordered a spicy Chai Tea (which is their only tea option at the moment). The lady at the register couldn't have looked more unhappy. And the guy who actually served us our drinks looked like HE could've used a few espresso shots. While I'm not going to a coffee shop to chat up my baristas, it would be kind of nice though if they had some people skills. Total bill for one macchiato (which was essentially a double) and a Chai Tea - $7.50. Yikes. Toto - we're not in Starbucks anymore. That being said, both beverages were spot-on. My friend absolutely loved her Chai, and my macchiato was brewed to perfection, and even had a heart carved out in the foam (nice touch). Long story short - I'd definitely recommend Ritual's coffee. It's been years since I've been to the Mission location in SF but Im glad to see the Ritual reach outside the city. Roseville, Napa, Palo Alto...it's getting out there. I had a cappuccino and here is the verdict Here is the verdict for the cappuccino Espresso: Bitter Crema': Good Milk: Frothed well Latte Art: Good Despite looking amazing the cappuccino itself wasn't to my liking. Espresso just killed everything including the sweetness in the well frothed milk. If you like a bitter shot of espresso this might be more your alley. 2.5 stars. read more

I do have some bias as i have worked here before, but that was after more than a year of sipping coffee and deciding that this was indeed the best coffee establishment i have been to. It's just taken me a long time to get to a review. I love the direct trade model that Ritual uses, everyone from the farmer to the barista is getting a living wage. But all that would count for naught if the product was not tasty, and indeed the coffee is fantastic in Ritual's case. Don't be offended if you are suggested to try a drink as prepared by the barista instead of your usual be it extra foam for your latte or an Au Lait. Coffee roasted this light behaves much differently and has more complex flavors than your standard chain coffee spot's brew. If you trust your chef you should trust your barista. If you are into third wave coffee or if you're just curious about what the hell it is, stop by and have a cup even if you have to elbow your way into a table it's worth it. read more

Coffee is good BUT the service was horrible. I ordered a latte with almond milk, and they used whole. When I told them they messed up my drink, they wanted me to pay for the charge of almond milk if I wanted another.. the girl behind me in line paid for it because she thought it was ridiculous and she could tell I was ready to tell them off. As I waited, one of the baristas was talking to some guy and was making comments about how she got stuck with a latte because I messed up my order. I haven't gone back since. I order a Matcha latte with oat milk, but I got a Mocha. The server could have told me that it wasn't on the menu, but instead decided that my accent was amusing. On top of that he made me repeat my order a few times and then asked me why did I want the oat milk for. I found this to be totally unacceptable and racist.
