Amazing how inspirational Vivace coffee shop is in Seattle. I used to live in Capitol Hill and that would be my morning spot for coffee and where I would take visitors. The founder of Ritual was also inspired by Vivace and opened Ritual which you will find scattered around the city. This location is small and inside of an old shipping container but it's right next to some other container businesses and an outdoor gym so there is plenty of movement and people coming and going. We decided to meet here because they had a lot of seating and we have 6 people in our group. There are limited pastries here and by the time we met at 10am the ham and cheese croissants were sold out. Flat White: 2 shots of espresso and minimal steamed milk, so tasty and not only were the beans high quality, the brewing technique and timing are also way above average. Almond Croissant: My friends said this was a way restaurants could get rid of day old croissants but I didn't care. I wanted the ham and cheese and it's been years since I've had an almond croissant. As a non-coffee drinker, I appreciate that they've been expanding their non-coffee options over the years. I can still remember when the only option I had was Song Tea. Unfortunately I'm not a huge fan of their matcha latte or seasonal hojicha latte (Day Off in Kyoto). I find both of them to be too weak in matcha / hojicha flavor, and the hojicha was also too sweet because it comes in the syrup. That being said, the 4* is because their coffee is good according to my partner and your best bet in Hayes Valley. read more

Took a walk with a colleague today, looking for a different coffee shop while I was near downtown for work, ended up going with Ritual Coffee as I have not had that for a while, walked in and the place was small and nice, vibes were super chill, ordered the brewed and ready with room for cream since that's normally my go-to! Coffee came out super quickly, of course, and the service was spectacular. Their POS machine was down today as it sounded like the wifi gave out, and it wouldn't let me apple pay, so the worker offered the coffee for free (the one day I didn't bring my wallet). I thanked them for the gesture and, of course, promised to come back with my wallet to pay for it. Great coffee and tea place in the middle of Hayes Valley. First experienced Ritual in the Mission, but this one in Hayes Valley is my fave for many reasons. Their drinks are great and located right on Patricia's Green. Buzzing with activities and great place to people watch. While they are known for their coffee drinks, Ritual carry this fantastic brand, Song Tea. Each cup of tea is brewed to order and you can really taste each note. My absolute fave right now is the Snow Jasmine with notes of sweet nectar and Lily. It's a green tea that comes from the Sichuan region of China. It's both fragrant and light, smooth yet striking with great mouthfeel and a very pleasant aftertaste. Great to enjoy both hot or cold. Service pleasant and located on Octavia and Hayes. read more

Small but popular spot in Hayes valley. Nice outdoor seating with a little park, especially on a nice day. Also good place for people watching. Lots of dogs too! Last week living in Hayes Valley and I had to pass by Ritual and pick up some beans before I move to the East Bay. Hands down, one of the best roasters in the Bay Area. I'm a sucker for drip (v60) and I always get Farami Catuaí - the plum brown sugar combination is fire. As for the service - it's ehhhh. I'd rather make my coffee at home. This particular location is probably one of my favorite coffee shops because I love its unique origins as a shipping container and the artistic and quirky flair it adds to the neighborhood. Ritual is on my weekend coffee rotation because it really never fails. I love this location in Hayes Valley. I enjoy the takeout only concept. It's an easy in and out and Patricia's Green is the perfect spot to people watch. The line can easily be out the shipping container but Sunday mornings are pretty quiet. The place is always clean and the staff is solid. From black iced coffee to their seasonal offerings, they hit the mark every time. The seasonal offerings tend to be on the sweeter side but not bad like dutch bro's vibes, if that makes sense. Their foggy latte is my seasonal favorite. The perfect play on a london fog. The hint of orange really elevates this special drank. Drinks range from $4 - $7ish. Average in the bay forsure, maybe even on the less expensive side. read more

Quite the interesting experience I had here this morning. An emotional rollercoaster you might call it. I started the experience excited that they now have soy milk. In my head, the stars had aligned just for me. This was going to be the start of what could possibly be the best day of my life. And what does that call for? A soy latte. Now I have this terrible habit of consuming iced coffee at the speed of light, so I decide to make a responsible decision for probably the first time in my life and order it hot. Or at least not specify 'iced'. So I order my soy latte and wait. The barista calls out a soy latte and I realize it's iced. It must not be mine so I wait longer. The iced soy latte is still there... staring at me like a gen Z host at the macaroni grill. We're exchanging glances back and forth and I finally accept that she is mine. Not exactly what I ordered but worse things have happened to better people. I throw a straw in and start drinking. You'll never guess what happened next. Barista calls out another soy latte and this time it comes with a name... my name. I'm caught in the act. Completely red handed. Like Mauri just told the entire studio audience that I in fact, am the father. My hot soy latte is livid. I weigh my options, I could leave my friend who still hasn't gotten her seasonal latte, but then she'd have to bear the shame herself. Today is the best day of my life so I decide to be honest. Honesty is the best policy, RIGHT? I tell them I'm so sorry and I thought maybe my latte was accidentally made iced and I was just gonna role with it. My hands are sweating, right eye twitching, I have truly never felt worse about anything in my entire life. The way these baristas looked at me you would have thought I urinated in their mother's chicken noodle soup. There was no line out the door, barely any other drinks to make and yet they acted like I was sending them to carry madame zeroni back up the mountain. The person whose drink I stole was lovely. He cracked a joke about not being expected to think before having our coffees in an attempt to break the tension. We both laughed uncomfortably about how much I have ruined the lives of these poor baristas by having them pull another espresso and pour it over their least favorite plant based milk. By this point it's been way more than 5 seconds and my latte is gone. He asks if I want to take the hot one I ordered... as if! I was NOT going to try these baristas again, who knows what sort of medieval torture device they would bring down on me. The pear of anguish? Judas cradle? Not me, not today. This was supposed to be the best day of my life. Still giving them 4 stars because I like my baristas like I like my coffee, bitter and likely to trigger my fight for flight response. Actually, I'm giving them 5 stars because quite frankly, I'm afraid of what they might do. If you see me in there in a blonde wig and full body prosthetics, you know why. My friend and I sat outside where it was starting to be warmer with the clouds parting and sun rising. The pour over was good, but not amazing. I could definitely taste the citrusy flavors and it's definitely on the fruitier and brighter side. In general, I'd recommend giving them a try. I used to come here every day before making my own coffee. But I still occasionally come to Ritual. The location is great to find a seat at the park, people watch and enjoy your coffee. Money saving tip!: If you want drip coffee but don't want to always have to pay a premium price - order a "just a coffee to go" and it's just $3.75 or something around there. The small to go size is just a little under $3. This is the same coffee but just not made to order. It's the coffee that was made in the morning in the insulated samovar and it's delicious. Another tip is if you frequent the place, get a stamp card where you can earn a free drink. You have to ask for one tho, they don't just hand them out without you asking. Also, their seasonal special lattes and iced drinks are always delicious. You can't go wrong with that menu, if they have them. The staff is always super nice and I appreciate how most of the staff are unapologetically non-binary/queer. You'll always get a really quality cup of coffee or latte made perfectly. If you want a caffeine kick, Ritual has the goods. And believe it or not, Ritual is a bit more affordable than Blue Bottle down the block. read more
