the first and last time i visited was during covid so I never got to step foot inside the store until today! it felt like a little book underneath the stairs and the floral wallpaper was very eye catching. i knew i wanted an iced drink, something caffeinated and not too sweet. the two tonics stood out and i went with the espresso instead of matcha as i was feeling more coffee than tea. i also requested half the amount of citron as i don't like my espresso tonics too sweet. the drink came out in a few minutes and was the perfect afternoon pick-me-up! ill definitely come back again to try other menu items. read more

Consistently good coffee but unfortunately also consistently icy service. I ordered a latte, tipped 25%, and waited for my drink. It was only me and one other person in the lobby. I realized they called his name so I went up to counter since he ordered after me. I didn't interrupt the baristas who were talking and avoiding eye contact, I waited for another woman to come over. I asked if the latte sitting there was mine and she said "it doesn't have a name". I said I had ordered but paid with my credit card and no one had asked my name. She then asked me if I ordered a latte and said that must be it before walking away. I was just trying to make sure I didn't grab the wrong drink by mistake. I would understand if it was super busy, but there was no one else at the counter. I'll be honest, I picked this place out for my one stop in San Francisco on the way out of town from a family vacation, based mostly on the provenance of the cafe's founder Trish Rothgeb. I didn't do much further research, and the place I was seeing in my mind... wasn't this place. It's small, kind of a modern-esque and clean "hole in the wall". Very little in the way of seating, and nothing in the way of "dine in" serviceware; I think it's largely designed for take out or just "gulp and go" like a traditional Italian coffee shop. But I had only one thing in mind: straight espresso. It was served up, as many here have pictured, in a paper cup. The only bean available is their Pillow Fight espresso blend, and after giving it a moment to cool, I dug in, and... wow. It was quite good. The shot was clearly on the more traditional side, leading with chocolate and nutty notes, but there was a smattering of fruity acidity as well, owing to the blend containing Ethiopian beans, I'm sure. It was a great combo of flavors in one shot. Service was quick and efficient, and after seating myself at a very utilitarian bench (which comprises most of the seating here), and consuming my drink, I dropped the cup in the trash and was on my way. Folks, visually and "experience-ly", this is not a destination shop. It's not something you make a pilgrimage to (as I did, sort of). But if you're in the neighborhood and wander in for an espresso, you'll be rewarded. read more

I ordered an iced almond milk latte with the Earl Grey syrup and ask the cashier if she think that's a good syrup and she said if you want it yeah. I thought that was just like a little rude and like kind of came out of nowhere considering like it wasn't busy in there at all. Now I will be honest up front, I did not consume coffee here but my husband, who is a barista and coffee snob, did! The shop was minimalistic and clean. Finally somewhere that wasn't crowded! I'll be straight to the point. The staff at this sidewalk cafe are extremely friendly, but their pour-over coffee isn't up to par with what I was expecting. I don't believe it's because of how it was prepared with the Kalita Wave; instead, I think the bean quality/roast isn't satisfactory for my palette. I was expecting a lot more, but the flavor profiles for their Ethiopia Yirgacheffe were very mute/bland. I think they have the best espresso in the city, their drinks are always high quality and exactly what you expect, and while I used to find their price point high, for now at least they're comparable to anyone else. It is kind of a locals place so expect that if you're new--invariably the barista will start chatting (efficiently) with someone they know, cafe seating is limited to the seats at the bar and a few tiny tables outside--giving very much a hyperlocal vibe. I found that the espresso was astringent and more on the burnt and darker side than I'd like. While it wasn't thoroughly unpleasant, I wouldn't recommend it. Definitely recommend the cookies here as well. The staff have been polite and professional each time I've visited. My only gripe is that seating is someone limited inside and on the sidewalk so it's more of a grab and go spot. COVID-19 Review: I came to Wrecking ball to get some coffee after my visit to the Apple store on Chestnut Ave, and I'm so glad I came to try their Iced soy latte! Very simple, but delicious. For two lattes with milk alternative (oat and soy) it came out to be about $13. But we all deserve to treat ourselves once in a while. Easy to read menu, quick service, got my coffee within 5 minutes. Parking seems to be metered around this area, but if you are willing to walk, I believe there is some non-metered spots as well. read more

Was passing by and got an iced oat milk mocha. Can't say that this mocha was for me. Looking at the other reviews, looks like a lot of people have great experiences with the lattes and cold brew. The mocha itself tasted like unsweetened cocoa powder mixed in. So not too strong of a chocolate flavor and lacked any sweetness which I know some people do prefer. But everyone was nice and very accommodating so hopefully will try again a different item. read more

Espresso is always dialed correctly; and they offer 16oz sizes for batch brew coffee - a rarity for similar class of cafes. Pastry selection is popular and regularly out of stock by late morning. The staff is lovely, and the shop is small which I prefer over large cafes where people can camp out and do work all day. This is the best tasting cappuccino I've had in SF. The baristas know what they're doing and don't over heat or froth the milk so there are tiny bubbles on top. Instead, it's a smooth and creamy crema with a well rounded taste. WB are also one of the few cafes that offer soy milk. I'm not forced into ick oat milk or basic almond.
