Let me start by saying we've never had a bad experience here. The food is wonderful, the staff is excellent, and the atmosphere is very comfortable. We've tried a wide variety of appetizers, salads, entrees, and sandwiches. All have been great. The prices aren't cheap, but neither is the experience. It's comfortable and good. They have solo or duo acts on the weekend and the entertainment is usually pretty good. The indoor seating area is very noisy, with high ceilings and sports on TV, so be aware. Since we wanted to converse in a normal tone of voice and it was a nice night, we opted to sit out back. This area is very nice, with a unique fireplace right in the center of the seating area. Our group ordered several appetizers: crab cakes and mozzarella sticks. Both were very good, in fact the crab cakes were excellent, as good as anything I've had on the East coast. For our main courses, we ordered Michigan perch, Cajun salmon, and two orders of fish and chips. The perch and salmon were great. The garlic mashed potatoes were seasoned just right and the green beans were terrific. The perch was done just right also, with a small bowl of lemon caper dipping sauce. The salmon was given a thumbs up by one of the other diners in our party. The fish and chips get a thumbs down. Described on the menu as "lightly breaded", they are anything but. The breading is so thick it's like a pancake wrapped around the fish. Once you gnaw your way through this blanket of batter and finally get to the fish, you will be disappointed. Greasy, greasy, greasy. The fries were just as bad, practically squirting grease when bitten. Service that night was spotty: we got our appetizers, but had no table service, so had to get our server's attention so we could begin our meals. Then we were brought our credit card slips, but neither one of us were given a pen to sign with, so again we got our server's attention so we could pay for our meals. Our server was very apologetic and not rude in any way, she just seemed like she was a bit frazzled and overworked. Worst restaurant experience, EVER. It wasn't that the 45 minute wait turned into 90 minutes. It wasn't that it then took over 30 minutes to get the first part of the order. It wasn't even that the food came out in 10 minute intervals (yes, some people were done eating before I even got my food). It was that the so-called manager didn't care.....the waitress yelled at him about the bad service, and the manager said he didn't care that we had been there close to 3 hours - in his words we would get our food when we got it. The food orders were wrong. Instead of apologizing, the un-manager only words was that he had been doing it for over 30 years and he didn't suck. Well guess what - it was worse, way worse. Finally managed to go here for dinner about a week ago and I have to say I was under whelmed. We were there at about 8pm on Friday evening the place was fairly empty and they had entertainment. First of all the two piece group they had was way too loud as the place was 90% empty, but they were at full volume as if it was packed. They were alright, but after a few minutes of not being able to talk with the others at the table I had had enough of them. The service was good, however the menu was kind of fell flat for me. I ordered one of the burgers which was expensive and frankly not all that good. If you are paying $14 for a bacon cheese burger it had better be at least really good. This one wasn't. The others who were with me all felt the same about their choices also. A couple of them had the French Onion soup and both said that it was too salty and lacking in the flavor department. It was high end prices for not much better the standard bar fare quality. I'll probably try it once more, but I'm not expecting that I'll be any more impressed next time. read more

First, I have to say the atmosphere of River Rock Bar & Grill is amazing. While it looks like a fancy steakhouse, and you could certainly dress up if you wish, it is much more relaxed inside. The inside reminded me of a hunters lodge, complete with fireplace. Second, there is an amazing patio outside, also complete with fireplace. Absolutely gorgeous. Third, I didn't think the menu was anything out of the ordinary compared to other steakhouses I have been to. However, the prices were reasonable and comparable. We started with the calamari appetizer. Now, most of you know when you order calamari, it can be a total hit or miss. So many places overcook it and the calamari ends up a gross chewy mess. This was not the case here at River Rock. I was completely impressed with how their calamari turned it. It was like butter melting in my mouth. For that alone it might be worth me coming back and trying something else on the menu. My dining companion had obviously been there before as the calamari was praised by him, so of course I had to try it. He ordered a burger, again, pretty sure it was something he had already had. But, he still said his burger was pretty amazing. I ordered the chicken fettuccine. The chicken was nicely cooked and not all dry. The pasta portion was plenty and their was enough sauce to coat it all. The broccoli was a little less to be desired as it was obvious it was frozen. I felt the dish was lacking a bit of something as the sauce felt a bit plain and tasteless. Our waitress was really nice. She passed our table a few times and left me hanging with an empty water glass. The place wasn't very busy and it had plenty of empty tables so I am not sure why she didn't stop in and check on us. The 2 stars... excellent waitress (Beth), adequate timing, ranch dressing and honey butter. The food was honestly like cafeteria food. I got the forest mushroom chicken. It was a chicken breast thrown into a pan, no plan, no recipe. In fact, the flavor was terrible, almost fishy tasting. The "honey cream" sauce, hmmm. There was nothing honey about it. It tasted like processed canned soup turned sauce. The chicken was accompanied with choice risotto side and house salad. Risotto did not taste homemade, and side salad was a spring mix with cucumber, tomato and crouton. Again, the ranch dressing was the highlight. Had I known it was a delicate soft, room temperature mix, I would have gotten a vinaigrette and I would have missed out on the best part of the visit. My husband got the fish and chips. The batter was less than stellar. His opinion was that it was edible. He was unsure if the fish was frozen boxed or homemade battered. Either way it was unremarkable. The coleslaw was average and the fries are your average frozen battered variety. Kids meals were, well, kids meals. Such a shame - the atmosphere, decor and building are super nice. No booths, just tables and a bar. Comfortable and roomy. The outdoor patio looks inviting when the season fits the opportunity. Will be surprised if this place isn't shut down within the year. Don't waste your money. We read the reviews prior to trying and I wished we had not tried to defy the odds. The food is barely edible and overpriced. This was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. We ordered a burger with sweet potato fries and mac and cheese. It took an hour and a half for the food to arrive. The burger did not taste fresh, or good. The sweet potato fries were undercooked and soggy. The bun was soggy. The mac and cheese was so crusty it looked like it had been sitting out the entire time. The manager did come over to apologize for the wait after an hour. However, they charged the full amount (almost $20 for a plate of mac and cheese that had been sitting ou!). Place has a nice Up North atmosphere, large tables with cloth table cloths, servers we dressed up and very polite. Had the ribeye cooked medium and it came out perfect, nice char marks as if it came off my grill at home. First of all the place is beautiful inside and the service was good. However, food mediocre. To start my husband ordered a long island ice tea, it had no coke in it and had to be returned. He also ordered a perch dinner which was not very good at all. For a $24.50 perch dinner we would expect them to be better - they were very small, breading soggy on top and skin side was cooked so much you could barely cut through it. There may have been 5 or 6 on the plate, we don't remember but 2 of them were not edible and when I tried one I couldn't even cut it with my fork - if was rock hard on the bottom. My meal was the $22.95 shrimp and artichoke linguine at $22.95 - a much better value than the perch dinner, and I would rate a 4 out of 5 stars. Thought we'd check this place out since we just moved to the area. We went on a Friday night. There were 2 areas, one for the bar side and the other dining, which was nice. Well we were the only 2 tables on the dining side, eventually being the only. I didn't think that was a good sign. It was strange how we were waited on. We had 2 different waitresses come to our table and neither knew what beers were on tap...whatever not the end of the world... But I wasn't sure which one was our waitress or if they both were....We both ordered a pasta dish from the menu which was rather expensive by the way, considering the meal we received. Both dishes were scorching hot! Like burn your mouth off hot! Something strongly tells me it was microwaved. I've never had food that dang hot at a restaurant. I wish I could rate this place with less than one star. One star is way too high a rating for a place as bad as this. If you love good food, you will hate this place. We were 4 adults, one three year old and an infant. We looked over the menu and asking about the contents of several of the food items. Our grandson, the three plus year old, is allergic to a few things. He specifically cannot eat things with eggs in them. Our wait person went back to the kitchen to ask about the ingredients of the breads and noodles we inquired about. She came back and said that they didn't know for certain but they suggested avoiding the items we asked about in case they contained eggs, which was the item we needed to avoid. It wasn't as if we asked her a difficult question. It seems pretty dangerous for a restaurant to not know what is in the food they serve. But she didn't know and we had to avoid a lot of the menu. Once we ordered, we were brought some glasses of water. The water tasted pretty funky. It was clearly well water. So people didn't want to drink that. Then the "food" arrived. I had ordered a ribeye steak cooked medium rare. It was advertised as 14 ounces. The thin piece of what looked to be vinyl siding might have been medium rare once in its life, but not very recently. It was, at most; 1/4 of an inch thick and I cannot imagine how anyone could have cooked this to a medium rare. I would guess that before they overcooked it, it might have been as much as five ounces. But the tiny portion was cooked far too long before I got it. It was full on well done. So I wasn't about to pay $ 27.95 for a petite and overcooked shingle, and I sent it back. Twenty minutes later another shingle arrived cooked all the way through just like the last one. I sent it back and asked to see a menu. I noticed that the barbeque combination that my wife had ordered with the BBQ sauce served on the side came out drenched in BBQ sauce. So evidently either the kitchen staff cannot read or they just choose to ignore what customers order. The waitress waited while I pondered the menu and I reconsidered my fate. I asked her if the cook could make a hamburger really rare. She started to say yes when my daughter, who had ordered her hamburger medium rare, said loudly "Dad, don't do it. This burger was ordered medium rare and it is very well done, greasy and tough and it has these strings running through it. You will not like their burgers." Another satisfied customer. So I stopped the burger order. By now everyone else had either eaten or just left their uneaten and inedible food on their plates. So I ordered fried chicken and hoped for the best. The chicken was not very good, but not terrible. It was overcooked and dried out. I shoveled it in so we could get out of there. The waitress, recognizing that this meal was a disaster, apologized and said that the manager was going to discount our bill. So we skipped desert as we all just wanted to get out of this terrible place. The check came and I noticed two things: 1. The bill was not discounted at all. 2. The child's hamburger was charged at the full adult price. I could have attempted to get this fixed, but considering all that had come down so far, I didn't question the bill. Nor did I complain. When a meal is this much a disaster, the best thing one can do is escape before the ceiling falls in or some other natural disaster occurs. I tipped the waitress the full amount as if the meal had been good. After all she didn't cook it and she didn't write the misleading menu. All totaled the damages came to around $ 100 for what was to have been 4 adult meal items and two kiddie plates. The food was largely inedible, the kitchen seems to ignore customer orders and the staff seemingly has no recourse to appease angry customers. Now I see other Yelp reviews of this place that show that others have identical issues with the food and the service. If you like good food, you will hate this place. We decided to take a cruise to Holly on a Friday night and I heard that this place was now open for business so we stopped in. It's HUGE inside. It's almost too big really. We sat at the bar and the bartender was most fabulous. Very professional and very friendly. He gave me the beer menu and I saw Founders was being advertised there but it's no longer. The bartender explained that they are having a hard time getting craft beer vendors to come out their way. They have been trying to get Short's out there on numerous occasions but to no avail. Such a bummer but he said apparently Holly is not an up and coming place for craft beer, so I opted for a Sam Adams Cherry Wheat. The hubs and I decided to split a burger and an appetizer. Calamari was the app-very tender and not rubberband chewy, which I hate. The batter was a bit different than I'm used to. I like it spicy and this was a light batter and it came with this thai chili flavored dip. I prefer marinara myself, but it was still good. The burger was huge and delicious, big enough for us to split and we were both full. It came with all of the fixings, plus fries, and on a pretzel roll..BONUS!! P.S. Had dinner and drinks here a couple Friday nights ago with friends. We had a 7:30 reservation, arrived promptly and waited 15 mins for our table. There were many people milling around waiting to be seated. We ordered a variety of entrees, I had the cranberry stuffed chicken special. It tasted like a holiday dish, actually much like a Thanksgiving meal, with stuffing and broccoli on the side. Starter was salad of choice, I had the Caesar and it was pretty good. My husband had a hamburger which arrived with well cooked (burnt) fries and a bowl of French onion soup as an appetizer. The broth was not well seasoned, it lacked flavor and the cheese was meager to say the least. The live music was great, there was a guy playing a guitar and singing along with him was a lady, they were were quite musical. Service was extremely slow, our waitress forgot things that were requested, and took at least 15 minutes to take our order. The food was not up to par, we would never return.
