I've been passing by this place for years and never had a reason to come in until my girlfriend mentioned that they made her very favorite Spanakopita. I've had it made for me by Greek expats, I've had it from the Livonia Hellenic bakery (whose is very good), I've had it elsewhere too, and honestly, I just haven't ever been too into it. I thought I just wasn't really a fan of spinach pie...until I had The Laundry's!!! Theirs is a deep dish version with layers and layers of phyllo and a few secret ingredients that the chef wasn't willing to share (of course I asked!) It was incredible and truth be told...it was the best part of my first experience at The Laundry. We also ordered a proper lunch with a couple sammies and some French Onion soup. My girl ordered the Croque Monsieur and I ordered the #97. I liked hers and she preferred mine so we swapped. The potato salad they brought with my 97 was just meh....the potatoes weren't cooked all the way and the mayo-yogurt based dressing was kind of a bummer, but the two different styles of pickles we ordered helped carry the sandwiches. I added the French onion soup for $11 and it was the perfect lunch. The soup was excellent, except there was way too much cheese! Half the bowl was cheese. I love that the flavor was there yet I had more broth than onions. Oddly enough, French onion soup is one of my favs, but I don't want to eat the onions! They have a great selection of coffee drinks. I got the iced sweet and salty with no vanilla syrup. It had a salted caramel cold foam atop of cold brew. I mixed it all up and had a deliciously creamy drink! read more

You may be wondering why we chose a restaurant about 60 miles away for our review this month. The answer is simple, because its darn good. Mrs. She-Ate and I are excited to share our esteem for this place with you. I first became aware of The Laundry around 2014 when I was leading a series of professional development workshops with the Flint Community Schools. A good friend and colleague who lived in the area suggested we have dinner not too far south of Flint and my taste buds have been blown ever since. The quaint bedroom community of Fenton has been benefitting from not just good food and libations, but also the cultural hub that The Laundry has become. Having first opened over 25 years ago on a site that was a former laundromat, the restaurant is embedded as an anchor in the downtown development and as a stalwart in supporting community initiatives- public schools and art, libraries, charities, and the chamber of commerce. They are as proud of that work as they are the James Beard nominated chefs who grace their kitchen. When you visit the bistro, with its locally sourced ingredients and on-site vegetable garden and beehive, you immediately know you're in a place that takes their food seriously. Craft cocktails and scratch-made meals are a hallmark, and while you may have prolonged anticipation while somethings arrive at your table, they are often well worth the wait. My very first meal years ago at The Laundry was a pork shank Osso buco that is still one of the best plates in my life. They also offer a cheese spread know as Gorg Dip that continues to be a hit whenever I recreate it during the holidays- cream cheese, leek, bacon, apricot, gorgonzola. Trust me, these people know what they're doing with flavors. Oh, wait, I forgot to mention they also double the fun with a bakery as their sister company, Crust, and a coffee house, Side Door, which is quite literally the Side Door to the restaurant. The baked goods are phenomenal, and rumor has it that leftover pastries are captured for the next day's bread pudding- which again is some of the best I've ever had. What's Really Good My Much Better Half stole away for a midday excursion to Fenton and enjoyed a "late brunch" at the Laundry. The coffee is a prime example of an exercise in patience- super slow in the advent but spot on once we were able to sip the hot, frothy Nutty Professor ($6.25. This is an espresso-based drink with house made caramel and macadamia syrup. For a sweet starter, we shared Jeff's Pull Apart Bread ($5) which is a single loaf shaped monkey bread. Packed with sweet notes of caramel and cinnamon and then smothered with a house made cream cheese frosting. Near perfect. What's Superb I must make note of the friendly and knowledgeable service we received. We were made aware of potential delays in plates and drinks but were also never an afterthought as our server checked on us multiple times with a genuine joy you only find when people really like where they work. We were both highly impressed and that was before she told us about her FIFTY-SIX hours in labor last July as she and My Much Better Half traded birthing stories. On the food side, I was torn between two items and our server asked how hungry I was. She then encouraged me to order the #125 The Money Maker ($17) and I was very much enchanted. A grilled brioche bun holds a heaping mound of hot honey butter braised chicken that is topped with applewood smoked bacon and a house made pimento cheese spread. The meat was tender and the kick from the heat was remarkable but not overblown. The pimento cheese spread is so good it also belongs in a jar to be purchase on the way out. I also ordered the Roasted Potatoes($3.50) which were just okay, to be honest, but there was enough flavor in the sammie that it didn't matter much. Best Bite My dining mate is a lifelong pursuit of the perfect French Onion soup. She ordered the House made Soup and Sandwich ($25) and I think she got as close as possible. Not to be relegated to second billing was the Petite Croque Monsieur with layers of ham, Gruyère cheese, and a traditional croque sauce. Yet, the star of the show was the unctuous soup with broiled Gruyère and croutons and slivers of onion that have been carmelized and stewed in a succulent beef broth for longer than you or I would have patience for. read more

We only came for a quick bite/drink as we had limited time before an event but we were able to get seats at the bar right away and order. My friend got the French onion soup and it did live up to the great reviews. She did say it was slightly salty but delicious and would order again. I only ordered a drink and decided upon the Ode to India (seemed to be the least sweet) which is a tea with turmeric, ginger, vanilla, agave, and steamed almond milk. It was absolutely delicious! I really enjoyed it as it was totally different! The bartender even told me to crack some black pepper in the tea for added flavor/complexity, truly unique. Stopped here for dinner on Sunday as we have always had a great experience on pervious visits, however it had been a while. Quaint, Warm, upbeat ambiance downtown Fenton. We were able to dine at the bar which is our preference. JW our bartender/server was great! Attentive and very cordial. After a couple craft cocktails, my wife and I both ordered the Wild Caught Walleye. 8oz Canadian walleye, pan seared, topped with a maple beurre blanc. The fish was a generous portion, very flaky and meaty, fresh with amazing flavor. The dish was accompanied with jasmine rice and Parmesan panko roasted broccoli. Menu offers a nice variety of options. You can order dessert from the dessert menu or they have a little bake shop in the back of the restaurant where you can get the same items to go. Desserts are all made in-house. :) Would highly recommend if your traveling through Fenton to check them out. read more

The Laundry is one of my favorite, go-to restaurants. The staff is top-notch, the specials are wonderful, and I generally leave wowed. Unfortunately, this was not the case last night. My husband and I were there for an early dinner. Our server was great--informative and patient--and the accompanying staff never let my water glass get to empty. We ordered the artichoke dip appetizer--something that we've had many times in the past. The flavor was great. The only problem was that it came out with the center of it cold. We did not realize this, of course, until multiple bites in, and our waiter was busy enough that he didn't get back to ask us how it was. When he didn't come to take our order I told him that the center was cold, but I don't think that he understood this and simply thought that the app had gone cold. He very kindly reheated it for us. For dinner, I had the Mussels Étouffée, which had just the right amount of kick. My husband's Wild Boar Ribs, however, were lackluster. The adobe flavoring was good, but it overshadowed the meat by far. All in all, the food was good, but not its usual level of outstanding. read more

Outdoor seating (covered patio or tables with umbrellas) or indoor seating options Perfect place for date night or a leisurely lunch with friends. Patio is so beautifully landscaped with flowers. Service was awesome for our four legged friends with a huge bowl of water. She was very attentive and kept our glasses full. I loved my #125 Money Maker although it was pretty messy. It definitely required the use of a fork afterwards. My daughter likes more basic meals so we ordered a basic burger with just ketchup and pickles. The burger was overdone for her liking. Stopped in here for lunch on a Friday and the place was packed. We did get a table with no wait, but it was quite full. We got a spot on the patio which was nice. I got a specialty flavor cold brew that was a seasonal toffee cold foam type. It was good! The menu is huge and hard to decide what to get- definitely something for everyone. I ended up deciding on the soup and sandwich, since gazpacho was a soup of the day. The soup was super tasty- and offered garnish was hard boiled egg which I had never had before. I got the vegetarian sandwich which was good if a little heavy on the mustard. I ended up taking most of it home, it was a generous size. I took down 1 star because service was quite slow. I understand they were busy, but we were there nearly 2 hours for lunch where we ordered sandwiches- i didn't really pay attention but my friend (who brought her baby) noted it took 40 minutes from when we ordered to get our food, and unfortunately as soon as it came, baby needed to nurse. Our server was very sweet and helpful though. I'd definitely consider coming back though! So much to try on the menu. read more

This was our second visit to the Laundry for brunch and once again it did not disappoint! I had the soup and sandwich combo and it it was delicious! I elected to upgrade the to the French onion, the cheese was super stringy which is always fun but the soup was a tad saltier than I would have liked. I paired it with the croque monsieur sandwich, that was a really tasty, I thought the flavors paired together very well! We love the atmosphere, it's a funky vibe of mismatched 50's dinner tables which I loved! The service today was okay, not the best but not the worst with the food being the star of the show. Over the course of two visits, I tried the Gorg Dip, the Crispy Chicken, the Bayou Salmon, and the Steakhouse Tenderloin. I thoroughly enjoyed each one, and would order each one again. The Gorg Dip is a new favorite. We ordered it on both visits - It's just that good! The Gorgonzola flavor doesn't overwhelm the dip, and you can taste all the other flavors. So good! Of the three entrees I tried, the steak was my favorite. I really loved the char on the tenderloin, and the sauce gave the tenderloin a really reach flavor. The green beans were a real standout. I found the accompanying potatoes to be exceptionally bland, which was my only criticism of the dish. The Crispy Chicken was delicious. I could have used a touch more lemony flavor in the sauce, but it was still very good. The Boursin mashed potatoes were very creamy, but I really couldn't detect much of a Boursin flavor. I did like the Bayou salmon though it was a touch underdone for my liking. It was nicely spiced though. The crab topping actually didn't do much for the overall dish. I loved the corn pudding, and I thought the Cajun spiced mashed potatoes were good. read more

OMG Becky!!! This is the 4th time coming here. I finally ordered the onion soup, and it was fantastic!!! The Ruben is large enough for two and is also fabulous. Make sure to order some extra sauce on the side. I didn't finish the meal, and I had no room for dessert. The pies are delicious, and it taste like the old days. This is a must try place!! Restaurant is pretty small on the inside, but we lucked out and were able to get a table quickly. Menu wasn't huge, but they had a ton of vegetarian options which I was stoked about. I started with a blueberry donut iced latte- it was super good. They also had cocktails, a ton of beers on tap, and even some mock tails for my friend whose pregnant. For appetizer we got the onion dip, we both loved it. Almost had a French onion taste to it! The pad thai was one of the best I've ever had, although I do wish the tofu was a little crispier. Then dessert we tried the peanut butter tart. We've been long-time patrons of this establishment and have always appreciated the welcoming and friendly staff. Unfortunately, the overall food quality has been declining. During our recent lunch visit, it took approximately 45 minutes to receive a soup, sandwich, and salad. The salad portion was noticeably smaller than in the past, especially for the price of the salad. The sandwich and pitas appeared to have been sitting under a warmer too long, leaving them dry and lacking in flavor. On a positive note, the French onion soup was excellent. This remains a great place for its people, culture, and ambiance, but the food quality, portion sizes, pricing, and wait times could use some renewed attention. read more

My wife and I each ordered the steak tenderloin during dinner service. Their demi glacé sauce put the steak on a whole other level from anything I've ever had. The $46 price tag for the tenderloin, potatoes, and green beans seemed steep at first glance, but after eating it, it's worth every penny. The French onion soup is out of this world- no question. However the Croque Madame I had as the soup/sandwich combo was missing something. It just seemed too creamy or had a strange flavor I did t expect. It wasn't bad but just didn't satisfy. My companions had a bohemian breeze salad which looked great. She finished half because it was so big. The other friend had the farmers skillet. It seemed small because it was 75% cornbread- she couldn't eat all the cornbread. The sausages were like odd shaped meatballs and the eggs were alright but it just wasn't that great she said. We did however enjoy the Jeff's pull apart bread- we should have gotten 2! I also took home a spicy Scott sandwich which and a Boulevard St. Laurent one. Both were ok. CAN I GIVE THIS PLACE 100 stars?! We picked this place on a total whim on our way home from shopping at Birch Run. We sat out on the patio white was SO nice, the inside seemed nice too, just some 50s diner vibes, which are unexpected. My husband usually complains that's the patio doesn't have good service and I felt the service on this patio was perfectly good! Also, there is only bathroom stall for this whole restaurant, so it was a wait! I got the Tickled Pink drink on the cocktail menu and it was the best drink I've had in a long time, I couldn't wait to get my second one. I got the Crispy Chicken and my husband got the Tenderloin Oscar. I have to say, our food was SO SO SO SO good. I couldn't believe how well the Kale was cooked and so tasty! We have been to this place a few times, For the most part it is very nice, food is very good quality, and the service is excellent. This place also surprisingly has a well developed cocktail program. All the drinks I have had were excellent. However, most of their food items are very overpriced especially considering the small serving size you receive. Additionally there is only one small bathroom here by their back coffee and bakery stand and it gets very busy. Admittedly, this gives you a chance to look at their delicious baked goods. read more

I did not eat all of my dinner, and it made for a great meal the next day. There's a lot of variety to the menu, so you will likely find something to your liking. I've heard about The Laundry for years. Today, I decided to make the drive (through much construction) to try it. First of all, these have to be the nicest restaurant employees ever. My server, Miranda, apologized "for the long wait". I don't think I even waited 5 minutes for her to take my order! And everyone who had a water pitcher stopped and filled my glass. I'd looked at the menu before I started my journey, so I knew what I wanted. I ordered the brisket & cheddar pancakes because it was so unusual. The flavors went together surprisingly well. However, there wasn't anything on the menu that warned that this was a bit spicy; a little too much so for me. And, they really mean it when they said it was bourbon maple syrup, which was also too strong. Still, overall, I enjoyed the meal. I took half of it home, and once I removed the onion jam from the top & used the regular maple syrup, it was much more to my liking. This is really a wonderful, friendly place. Miranda gave me ideas of places to check out in Fenton, and at least 2 more people -- who were NOT my servers --- asked how I liked the pancakes. My friends have always raves about this spot and driving through Fenton, I finally got to try it. It definitely lived up to the hype and did not disappoint! We stopped in for lunch on the way back to Dearborn and it was such an amazing meal. Parking is a little tough given it's right downtown but we didn't have a ton of trouble (there is some spots in the back or around the block) and when we entered, we were greeted and seated promptly! The menu was a little overwhelming but I got to take my time to review it while we waited for our friends. The server was extremely friendly and provided various recommendations, including the pull-a-part bread. It is small enough to share a bite with 4 or to just eat on your own! Think cinnamon roll meets monkey bread... made fresh everyday and absolutely DELICIOUS! The eggs benedict totally hit the spot and the sandwich was HUGE. Just know that you should share it or just have leftovers (which tasted amazing, btw) but the winner for me was the french onion soup. It was fresh out of the oven, so cheesy (I wish I got a picture of the cheese pulls) and stayed so warm that I burnt my tongue a couple times (just because I'm away too impatient). I definitely want to come back for dinner (their IG looks so good) and try even more. I just wish it was closer to where I live. read more

I had been here once 20 years ago and still remembered the awesome pie and sandwich, I was going to be in the area with my husband and I knew I had to look them up and I'm glad I did. The food and service were excellent. We got some of their signature cocktails and cheese board, favorite item from it was sage dusted almonds. Shared the wild mushroom carbonara, I had seen a picture online and it looked delicious and it didn't disappoint. Finally finished up with a piece of the cherry/raspberry pie with ice cream and a guava cupcake. Both were amazing but we took the cupcake home. read more

Service is the MOST important thing to me I appreciate feeling welcomed in the establishment I'm in. Here was all smile and welcoming spirits. The FOOD... OH THE FOOD!!!!¡!!!! My husband and I decided we would order 2 different items a piece from the menu. I opted for the pancetta and muenster cheese stuffed pancakes that had a peach and pablano compote on top. This was the best thing I've ever experienced in my 45 yrs of life. The pancetta is like salty bacon clouds bursting in ur mouth the mild funky flavors from the cheese along with the sweetness from the peach and pablano compote this is 5 star all by itself and we'll worth the hr and six minute drive from my house. The steak & eggs were really good as well. My husband said the Otis toast was the star for him but he really enjoyed the pork shoulder hash as well. They have an really good drink menu as well but we opt for the strawberry lemonade also VERY GOOD AND WORTH THR TRIP!!¡!!.
