Really kind of bummed that I won't be coming back here anymore. This used to be a go-to spot for meeting friends or co-workers for happy hour. After a few bad experiences, I have decided to take my business elsewhere. One of the worst experiences here was waiting for over an hour to have our server divide the bill up for our group, after mentioning several times that we wanted to be on separate checks to begin with. After going to speak to the manager 3 times, and nearly walking out, they were finally able to get our individual bills to us. The manager did however "make it up" by giving us gift cars, but still was not happy with waiting an hour for it to all be said and done. My other experiences have just generally been slow service, which is not expected by the ambiance they set for their guests. I hope that they are able to turn things around, because there is a lot of potential here. read more

Stopped in on a Tuesday evening at approximately 4:20 hoping for happy hour on the deck. There were approximately 6-8 tables of couples seated on the patio at the time with many tables open. We owere asked if we had a reservation and we did not. We were told there were several reservations ahead of us and it would be a 15 minute wait. We chose to wait and after 15 minutes there had been no one arriving with reservations and two other couples who tried to eat but were told there was a wait since they did not have a reservation. We chose to leave as we were never called for a table and they no longer have a happy hour. We felt we were being lied to or stalled or pushed away. We were also not allowed to have a drink as we were not seated at a table. Coming off of Covid I thought they would be happy for the business but they were not here!! I would have given this place five stars for ambience and atmosphere but I had to consider the food. Unfortunately the food would have been below three stars because I ordered the four course chef dinner and the salmon was poor quality and cooked poorly. It had about half an inch of that gray stuff attached to the salmon meat which would not come off. The potatoes were not hot and gummy. I was so disappointed. We used our groupon so maybe if we hadn't I would have received a better quality piece of salmon. Hard to say. The Riverview is a great option for either a nice higher-end meal with a view of the river, or a happy hour social hour. The bar is cozy and seating can be competitive, but if you sit at the bar and grab a happy hour, the pricing and quality is great. (I'd compare it to a Stanfords happy hour). read more

Went here with a large party in the private dining area for a birthday party. The table was set up in a large square U shape which makes it difficult to converse with others in the party that aren't sitting next to you. Very unimpressed with the steak ordered rare and it was cold through the middle and chewy. You may consider going to Ruth's Chris instead if you are after a steak cooked correctly. First off our service was outstanding, some of the best I have ever received from a gentleman named Peter. Day after Valentines Day, so it was pretty slow and they sat us right next to the fireplace, cheers to the hostess. Wine selection was great and server assisted with our choice and had a breadth of knowledge regarding pairing with our food. The special was great, steak cooked to perfection, presentation was on point, just a bit heavy handed with the sweet and sour sauce for the prawns. She had the Coconut Cod, the sauce was excellent and resembled the flavors from a Tom Kha soup! Creme Brûlée was divine and made with real vanilla beans. We did not make a reservation but did purchase a groupon for a 4 course meal for 2. We told the hostess we purchased a groupon and wanted dinner for 2. We sat down ate amazing food and then the bill came. When we said how do we pay with the groupon the waiter (Charles) said it was an entirely different menu and that we should have told the hostess. We told our waiter we did and he said we can either have you pay for the full dinner tonight and use the groupon another day OR take the amount of the groupon off our bill. We were trying to have a good night so we just said take it off the total bill. Now looking back we feel ripped off because it was not our mistake that the hostess gave us the wrong menu. read more

The only reason I'm giving this place 2 starts is because the food was amazing. The service on the other had, not so much. We had reservations at 6:45PM on a Thursday. We got there 10 min early and were sat within 5 min. We sat at our table for about 20 min before the manager came by and filled our water glasses. He said he would send the server over right away. Another 10 min later, still no server and the manager came by again and said he would take our drink orders and apologized for the delay. Our drinks came out and he said, Tyler, i think, would be right over. 10 min later, Tyler, came over and introduced himself, finally. I told him that we had a Groupon and asked for that menu, they have certain items you can choose from with their Groupon. He got us the menus and then walked away. 10 min later another round of drinks were delivered to your table, which we didn't order but gladly accepted. Now keep in mind we have 2 rounds of drinks before any order was taken. By this time the manager said he would get the first course fired for us and Tyler will be by to take our order. Might i mention tyler also had a table of about 15 behind us, so he was walking by us for an hour before he even introduced himself to us. anyway we finally placed our order with Tyler and our first course was served after and hour and 15 min. The last and final time we saw was when he picked up our empty plates from the first course. He never came back to the table. Other employees gave us our other 3 courses and then manager took care of our payment. The food was amazing! but like i said, the service was HORRIBLE! we drove and hour and 10 min to this place and wish we could have had a better time. We made reservations at Riverside to celebrate my daughter's 30th birthday. There were 10 adults in our party. We all arrived within 5 minutes of each other and were seated. We sat for 15 minutes before our waitress appeared to take drink orders. Once ordered, she brought water and bread. Another 15 -20 minutes went by before 9 of the drinks were delivered and then she disappeared again. The restaurant was not busy and there were other servers attending to other guests. Our waitress finally reappeared and took our dinner orders. Upon bringing the appetizers I was able to catch her attention to tell her I still hadn't received my drink. No apologies...she walked to the bar and miraculously came back with my drink...40 minutes after I ordered it. The food was very well prepared and good, although portions are small for the price. They were out of one of the menu items which was surprising given the almost empty dining room and the fact they had only been open for an hour. Our water glasses were never refilled, dirty plates were left in front of us until we began stacking them ourselves to get them out of the way and we had to flag down the waitress to get the complimentary birthday dessert for the birthday girl. Someone tipped off the pianist who played happy birthday when the dessert arrived. None of the singing waitresses or waiters mentioned in other reviews. Should also mention that Mr Yoshida himself was in the house stopping at tables and schmoozing customers. We were a large table of well dressed, quiet adults about to drop a large chunk of cash in his establishment, yet he never even acknowledged us. We will not be returning to this restaurant. Yoshida Riverview Restaurant It was Sweetie's birthday, and for the special occasion, we decided to try Yoshida's Riverview Restaurant, way out east along the Sandy River in Troutdale. Our reservation was relatively early, about 30 minutes after opening for the evening. There were people out on their famous patio, overlooking the river, even though it was cold and windy. At this eatery, may people say it is all about the view from the deck. We were ready to brave the outdoor seating, but alas, it was Closed for the Season. We accepted a table window, overlooking the patio. We looked over the menu - one of those perhaps set by a youngster, who has not learned to capitalize letters - all sent in chic lower case. First, the fresh, warm bread served to our table made a very favorable impression. We started off with "won ton shumai" - steamed chicken dumplings in won ton wrappers & served with a reduction of "mr. yoshida's" famous original Gourmet Sauce. We agreed it was a little bit bland, and could have used a little more sauce; I'm sure they had plenty of it available! They permitted us to split a large "caesar salad" made with romaine lettuce hearts tossed in house-made "caesar" dressing with parmesan-reggianito cheese & croutons. Standard, good; but a tad under dressed. I guess we like the sauce! Sweetie opted for the "american kobe" top sirloin steak, an 8-ounce "snake river" farm "kobe" top sirloin over garlic mashed potatoes, asparagus, shitake demi-glace. Being an affectionate of both good steak - and garlic mashers - it was a good selection. At nearly $30 for the entree, she said it seemed a little on the expensive side, given the stringent portion controls for the plating. By the end of her meal, she was smacking her lips, saying it was a very tasty meal. But, we agreed that we were in a "mr. yoshida's" fine dining establishment, not a fill-'em-up truck stop. My selection was the portabella chicken dinner, finished with provolone, aged gouda gnocchi, portabella mushroom and demi-glace, served with a good portion of roasted vegetables. The chicken smelled fresh (an important factor to me) and tasted good and tender. The sauce was just right and delicious. And, the vegetables were nicely grilled and seasoned. I did not touch the salt or pepper shakers. The service was acceptable and professional. We weren't in a hurry; the food came out warm, and we felt accommodated. In all, a toothsome repast. Due to the cost, it isn't a place we will frequent, but may return in the future, after we hit the lottery! read more

Restaurants fail for various reasons - poor food, a bad location, terrible service. The location is ok (it was dark outside so you couldn't fully appreciate the view), the server was attentive (albeit overusing the words "dear" and "hon"), but worst of all was the food, it was terrible and overpriced. It took over an hour to get our meals and there were only about 10 other tables in the whole restaurant. The meat was warm but the sides were cold. Everything was bland. The spaetzle was very soggy and the vegetables were overly soft and tasted like they had been frozen. Nothing on the menu seemed overly appetizing, no creativity... "vegetable medley"? Is that what the bag said? Nothing appeared seasonal or local, they had to go to New Zealand to get lamb. I didn't even want dessert for fear it would be a previously frozen cake from Sysco covered in Hershey's syrup and the edges of the plate would be obnoxiously covered in random dollops of sauce. Sad. Even sadder, the "signature drinks" contain college staples like hypnotq, malibu, and 99 bananas. Unfortunately Riverview, you will never be able to compete with the quality of restaurants in Portland. Save your money and drive to Portland, Levant made an exquisite make-up meal for such a terrible food experience. This was without a doubt a five-star experience. We stopped by on a whim and were seated on the beautiful patio overlooking the river almost immediately. It was a warm night and the patio was strung with lights and had a lovely ambience to it. :) The inside was also clean, well-decorated, and comfortable. Our waiter was friendly and helpful. I ordered some clam chowder to go along with the bread and honey butter on the table for my first course, and both were delicious. The bread was hot and fresh-baked, and I couldn't get enough of the honey butter. The chowder was perfect comfort food. For the main course I had glazed Pacific sturgeon, broccolini, and mashed potatoes. My only complaint was that the mashed potatoes were dry, but the flavor was still good. The broccolini was fantastic - crisp and garlicky - as was the sturgeon. It was very fresh and perfectly cooked. Even though we were stuffed, we finished the meal with a flourless chocolate decadence cake and vanilla ice cream. One of the best desserts I've had in a long time! All in all, this was a perfect experience. If I lived in the area, I'd be a regular customer. Much better than the pricier Timberline Lodge restaurant we ate at the night before! read more

We visit Riverview about once a year. We go primarily for the atmosphere and the consistently satisfying food. Each year we are pleased with our beverages, entrees and desserts. This year, I revisited the Gorgonzola Butternut Ravioli and my husband had the Tropical Prawns and Scallops. We truly enjoyed our food with no need to add additional seasoning...the flavors were quite satisfying. Our waitress, Tuesday, was a treat. She was attentive and honest. Even though we did not get our appetizer, she was quick to graciously offer a dessert on the house--we had not expectation that this should happen. Our overall experience, this last visit, was a wonderful date night. Overall the menu has not seemed to transform leaps and bounds from year to year however we are more than happy to return to an inviting, relaxing and romantic environment. I really, really wanted to like this restaurant. I am, honestly, desperate to find decent, reliable food on the far-east side of town and sadly, Riverview will not be making my (very) short list. The setting is beautiful. The facility is very nice. The service was excellent but a bit slow. The food was just not very interesting or particularly good. We had the Naan with Indian Curry Dip to start. It was interesting enough to try and not be disappointed but not really good enough to order again. It really is just a spin on the warm artichoke dip (but with spinach) thing. The naan was simply a vehicle for the dip and was not interesting -- certainly not made on site. I had the Orange Ginger Duck Confit for my entree and about the only positive thing I can say is that the portions were certainly generous - I had two large legs with thighs attached. I tasted none of the orange-ginger in the sauce and the duck, although moist, was bland and, again, didn't seem to have absorbed any of the orange/ginger during the simmering process...and isn't it traditional to finish it off in a broiler or something to crisp up the skin? I don't think I got Duck Confit. I think I got stewed duck. The skin was thick, flabby, and...tasteless, just like the meat. Mango rice - steamed rice, add a layer of mango (from a can?), more steamed rice. Um, I think I can figure out how to do that myself, especially since there were no other seasonings added. Asian sauteed veggies - roasted veggies really, with a soy based sauce. Not bad. My hubby had the New York steak which he said tasted fine, was prepared to order, but was very tough which is odd because the menu said it was aged which usually results in a tender piece of meat. The mashed potatoes were fine. The only genuinely good item was one of our dessert choices - Plain cheesecake which really did taste homemade and was very, very good. We ended up getting desserts to go (long dinner + 2 year old child) so missed the presentation - I guess the cheesecake is prepared in a martini glass and is quite cool looking. The mashed version (our fault) we had at home was wonderful. It was a good, clean, not too heavy cheesecake with a not to sweet or overwhelming crust - Perfect. The chocolate cake with apricot filling, on the other hand, tasted like it came from a box in the freezer. The place was certainly child friendly and accommodating. Eating on the deck meant that we could take a restless child to the garden/gazebo when he got bored and allowed us to not bother the other diners. It's a very casual setting and quite lovely in the evening. I think, eventually, we'll give it another try - but perhaps just for lunch. My boyfriend and I enjoyed a delicious dinner here. We both had side green salads to start; my only complaint was that some of the lettuce in my salad was wilted. Our entrees of ahi and trout were delicious and cooked just right. We've gotten picky about how our seafood is prepared and this was perfect. Our chocolate dessert was incredibly scrumptious, but we were glad we shared it since it was very rich. They really advertise the beautiful setting, but that is totally lost when you come here for dinner in the winter. I remember when Viking park, at the Start street bridge and the Sandy river, was a homeless camp. The original Hagar's pub shared the park with the elite of the former camp - a couple of old single wide trailers. I always loved sitting under the trees, next to the river, on a warm summer day, drinking a beer and listening to live local blues. Hagar's had the best burgers in town. It was sad when the doors closed and the music stopped. I was, therefore excited when Junki Yoshida began construction on the truly beautiful Riverview restaurant. The architecture is a blend of Asian and Pacific Northwest WPA. The dining room is a stunning great hall with windows covering the far wall - windows that overlook a huge deck and the Sandy river. In the center of the main dining hall sits a black grand piano. There is a small lounge and bar off the main dining hall. The walls of Riverview are covered in original art. The piano player plays what can only be categorized as syrupy Muzak. It really make the hair on my neck stand on end, so I alway sit on the deck. I once asked him to play some Thelonious Monk, and to my surprise he did, but then retuned to his charts. Riverview has a good selection of wine and micro brews to get you started. The Blacked Salmon with Saffron Risotto is quite good, as is the Wild Mushroom Alfredo. Riverview also makes a really good Caesar salad. For desert, they make a flaming Banana Foster at your table, and serve it up with vanilla ice cream. The Creme Brulee is pretty good too. Here is my personal advice: Make reservations for an early hot summer evening and ask to sit on the deck. Order a nice micro brew and a Caesar salad with salmon. Once it's dark, have the flaming Banana Foster. I can't go to Riverview in the winter because the deck is closed and I can't escape the piano. read more

So, I thought I would give it another chance since last time was do disappointing maybe it was an off night. But no, this time was just as disappointing. And I won't be back. For a place where it is going to be $100 for two people, I would expect attentive wait staff, involved manager and stellar food. Unfortunately, we experienced none of this. Our server didn't offer us a drink the time she visited our table, just let us know she would be back to take our order. She only checked on us once after she delivered the meal and our drinks sat empty without being offered another. The manager was very present walking the floor, but didn't stop and check on the guests, just walked back and forth and reset when tables emptied. With only 8 occupied tables, he should have stopped at each one just to check to make sure things were ok. The food was mediocre at best. Certainly not worth the $100 we paid. It was pretty bland and lacking in seasoning. Not a good thing when the part with the most flavor was my vegetables. The view is the best thing this place has to offer but it doesn't make up for inattentive service and lackluster food. read more

Great venue and great service. However, the food isn't as good as it used to be. Had the miso glazed salmon. It was overdone and not glazed - at least not as far as I could tell. There was a miso-type sauce glopped on top. Dessert was fine, but appeared to be grocery store frozen chocolate velvet pie on a fancy plate (Sara Lee?). I chuckled a little when I realized it was $9.00. Don't get me wrong, the food wasn't awful, it just wasn't up to par for a $100 date night. Had a similar experience here a few months back. When they first opened, they brought over the chef from the Portland City Grill in Big Pink. The food was absolutely wonderful (and in the same price range). I think he must have moved on. Seems like I'm in the business of writing 5-star review. I don't know, I can't help it. I seem to scout out the best places to go, actually go to them and confirm their awesomeness. Riverview Restaurant was one of those places. I went here with my wife to celebrate our two-year wedding anniversary. First of all, the restaurant is gorgeous; the lighting by candlelight, the "earthy" kind of decor, it was just beautiful. The food was fantastic as well; the caprese salad was one of the best that we've ever had. The wine list is wonderful. Our food was great as well. I had the thai linguini with chicken. Truly a unique dish with pieces of cut chicken on top of a bed of linguini and thai stirfry and sauce. My wife had the hazelnut chicken and was very much pleased with it. We had the bananas foster for dessert, seeing as how it was a special occasion for us. And like everything else, it was delicious. Riverview Restaurant truly deserves 5 stars. read more

My fiance and I went here for dinner. Nice view of the river and nice fancy but earthy atmosphere. I even liked the art on the walls, though not sure how to describe it. We went late on a weeknight so not many people there. We got the fried calamari as appetizer which was very tender, the best I've had actually. I got the charred lamb rack, and it was very rare just like I ordered. Best lamb I've had! Nice size portions too. My fiance got the crab ravioli, and very much enjoyed it, I liked it too when I had a taste, and I normally don't like ravioli. The service was pretty good, though the waiter seemed a tad snooty when we didn't get any wine, but we were splurging as it is. They do have a nice selection of wine. Was a great place for a date, at least on the slow night we went. They don't have a very big dinner selection, and not a good place for vegans, but we were both very happy and thought it was worth the price. The manager or owner came out and asked if we were happy with everything too which is usually a good sign. No real complaints. We will eat there again. Expect to spend $60 or so on dinner for 2, more if you get wine. Not super high, but we usually go to restaurants half that price or less because we like to eat out a lot. Their chefs must watch some Gordon Ramsay's shows to learn that each plate has to be checked before it leaves the kitchen. -If they offer you a salad before your entree,keep in mind that it costs 5$. The view was beautiful, but the food was not very good. After reading the revues I expecting food with Mr Yoshida's sauce. The one item that I did order that had his Sauce was a starter. The Won Ton was dry because it was precooked and the sauce Was sitting on the plate for a long time before they put the won ton on. That was fine We got our food really fast, But was it pre cooked. Steak was hard and the sauce under the steak was burn. Then after we got our food we looked at the other tables and said how come we don't have bread. By then it was to late to even ask. This is hands down the best restaurant in Oregon. Not only is the food and scenery spectacular, but the service is the best we've ever experienced. Riverview has always been one of our favorite spots for romantic evenings, as well as for entertaining out of town guests and friends. However, the experience I've had recently put them at the very top of my list for good. I contacted them when I was planning a surprise birthday party for my husband. I was put in touch with their event planner, Linda Holevas, and that's when my experience went from good to great. Linda was so organized and professional! She emailed me numerous menu ideas, drink lists, photos of how the private room could be set up, just absolutely everything I could have wanted, or needed. She was always prompt with her replies to any of my questions and made me feel like I didn't have to worry about a thing. Moreover, in getting to know each other during the planning process I shared that my husband was preparing to redeploy soon. The night of the party she surprised me with a special menu made for he and I as a keepsake, a gift to me of the Military Wife's Prayer, special drinks for he and I, as well as special decorations just for our event. This made our entire evening so very special. My husband was surprised by his special party and I was surprised at the immeasurable level of customer service by Linda and the entire staff. It was too cold for the patio tonight but other times it has been great to sit outside under the firs listening to the Sandy River murmur by. We were seated near the window tonight so we could still see the Sandy. Kassie, our waitress, was friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, and even though she was the only waitress working at the time we were there, she made us feel like we were the only ones there. (She had 4 other tables plus a table of 6 with 2 little kids.) We started with the Calamari steaks, which were large and tender with a nice aioli sauce on the side. My wife had the "Tropical Prawns and Scallops" which were sauteed in dark jamaican rum and spices and were placed on a bed of jasmine rice and grilled asparagus. We both ate some and still couldn't finish it all. I had the Dungeness Crab with 3 cheese ravioli. A lot of crab on the ravioli in a flavorful sauce. Delicious! My only complaint, and a small one, is that they serve beer in iced glasses. That may be necessary for the colored water that is Bud and Coors but is not needed or wanted on the several craft beers on draft. We ate in the dining room but will be back soon for the happy hour, which runs from 4:30 to 7:00. read more

My friends and I just got back from hiking so of course we weren't looking our best. We were looking for a good happy hour spot to just grab some food and drinks. I then suggested this restaurant because I had came here before and enjoyed it. We understand that this is an more upscale restaurant (well they try to think they are) and know that they would like to keep a good reputation. So if we were to actually have dinner, of course we would be more dressed up. But we thought since its only happy hour, it would not be a big deal. Just sit at the bar and have a few drinks and leave. As soon as we walked in, the hostess looked confused on why we were there as if we didn't belong there. I then told her were here for happy hour so she then said its outside. Didn't give us anymore direction but just pointed outside. Okay? So we went outside and saw a table open, it still needed to be clean. So we waited patiently. We understood that the waiter/ waitress were busy. So we continued to wait for someone to at least come up to us and tell us they will be right with us in a moment (how a normal waitress/waiter would say) Instead they kept walking pass us as if we weren't there. They were ignoring us and not even acknowledging that we were there. They would look straight at us and still ignored us. Was it because we looked as if we couldn't afford the place because of the way we looked? That's how we felt. I then got fed up and went to the bartender to let him know, no one is helping us. Thank goodness there still good people out there so he politely told me he will clean the table for us immediately. So we got that taken care of. Then the waitress came and gave us water very rudely. Didn't say a word. Maybe because she knew i went to get help from the bartender and she felt stupid. I was about to complain because I don't believe that it is right to judge people on just their appearance. I think it's very important to give great customer service to everyone regardless how they look like. But thank goodness our waiter comes along and he was very nice. He made things a bit better. And what do you know, we spend over $200 on food and drinks. So this restaurant has great food but they seem very judgmental. Great customer service means more to me then the taste of the food. read more

We enjoyed the 4 course tasting menu. It was interesting and diverse. The courses were generous in their servings. The waiter we had was a long-time professional server who made the experience fun and special. We saw other diners order the table-side prepared bananas foster, which was entertaining to watch. The location is really beautiful on the edge of the Sandy River. The dining room is pretty large, and even so the tables were a bit close together. Although in our case most of them were not occupied, because we chose an off night. But the waiter had a difficult time moving the bananas foster cart through the area. The dining chairs leave a little to be desired in the comfort arena. They aren't the worst I've had, but not super comfy for a long dinner. There is a grand piano with an auto-play feature that adds to ambiance. All-in-all it was a really enjoyable evening. read more

Picture yourself, on a warm, sunny evening, sitting outside on a pretty patio, surrounded by trees, overlooking the Sandy River...Picture yourself, on a cold winter's evening, sitting inside a wonderfully warm room, made cozy by a fire and live piano music...No matter what time of year, the Riverview, my favorite place to dine in the Portland area, gets it perfect every time. The food is top notch, delicious without breaking the bank. Nice bread basket (soooo good!). Most recently, we enjoyed the grilled marinated pork medallions with polenta cakes, roasted root vegetables and ancho-chili cream sauce. Another entree was the seared ahi---ginger-sake marinated yellow-fin tuna steak, sesame crusted & seared rare, jasmine rice, stir-fried vegetables, wasabi béchamel sauce. Other times I have enjoyed their Chilean Sea Bass. The food is always amazing. Wonderful desserts. The grounds are gorgeous --- there are often weddings. The also have a nice happy hour, but get there when the restaurant opens if you want an outdoor seat in the summer!! We went once and "the bar was closed". Too many people wanting to enjoy it----it was maddening. Go! You will love it. read more

My husband and I love going to the Riverview for both Happy Hour and dinner. The restaurant is gorgeous with high ceilings, hardwood floors, and large windows. Our favorite seat in the house is on the patio overlooking the Sandy River... so peaceful. The food is a little pricey but always delicious. I really enjoyed both the salmon with a miso glaze and the raviolis with crab. My husband loves all of the beef options. In addition, Happy Hour is all day on Tuesday and well worth the drive. Good cocktails and choices for food. We recommend! read more

Great location. Beautiful space. Crappy "Sysco" food and cooks with no tastebuds. The ahi was stringy. The clam chowder was out of a can. The steaks were okay but thin and a little too fatty. The lamb was over salted. The shrimp just tasted BAD. The wine list is weak. But hey, the drinks were stiff! They have live music, and the musicians are talented, but in a very live acoustic space it made for an atmosphere not conducive to quiet conversations. Maybe we'll try drinks on the deck next summer. read more
