Great sushi I got the crab roll and Cali roll it was pretty fresh I work near by so I'll be back

RK is temporarily closed for name change -- and hopefully some much-needed improvements. We used to love RK Sushi until about three years ago when we started to see a downward shift in product, prices and service. Apparently, someone thought it was a good idea to have to order off of an iPad device set up at each table. When we asked about the the new ordering procedure, our female server stated that "We were tired of having to explain all of the details/ingredients of the different dishes." Well, aren't those details usually listed on the menus? Besides, now the servers get to spend their time assisting customers in using the Ipads. On two separate occasions, my dining companion and I found a small bone in one of the sushi rolls. This last time, when we mentioned it, we were given no compensation, and not really even much of an apology; our female server just sort of shook it off. I'm thinking she perhaps knew the restaurant would be closing soon, so why bother? Two things that really stick in my craw, during our most recent visit, we noticed that sake was taken off the beverage menu altogether (the sake-beer special has been long-gone for 5+ years now, anyway), and the restaurant is now charging an additional $2 for avocado on any roll. Personally, I would rather see a slight increase in prices on ALL the rolls, to help compensate for this petty adjustment, rather than a blatant price increase on rolls that contain avocado, when many rolls contain it, anyway. RK is scheduled to reopen in October, and although Sushi Roll Land on Fifth in Hillcrest has been our go-to for a few years, we might consider giving RK another try, in hopes that there have been some big changes. 1) Please bring back actual servers to take our order, and not force us to rely on Ipads, 2) bring back sake (and sake-bomber drink specials perhaps?), and 3) take a little more time filleting the fresh fish, to ensure there are no bones to ruin my appetite. read more

All you can eat for $40 !!! 5 nigiri's per person, we tried the salmon, tuna, shrimp, and albacore. All were delicious but my favorite was the albacore the waitress was nice and attentive. Sake was $6. We tried the different rolls and a hand roll. Definitely try the Washington roll! It was seared and so delicious even if you don't do the all you can eat, the prices are cheaper than your usual. Will be coming back again read more

I have only ever done takeout for their specialty Maki rolls so I can only speak to that - But I really enjoy RK Sushi! It's definitely a go-to for me for takeout in the Hillcrest/Mission Hills area. I particularly enjoy the Marissa Roll and Crunch Roll (basic, I know). They have other fun speciality rolls that I've enjoyed as well but always seem to come back to these two. I typically order through their website for pickup and it's usually quick even on weekends. Standard sushi restaurant prices - Not too low, not too high. We came here for all-you-can-eat sushi and left feeling uncomfortable, disappointed, and honestly super creeped out. We usually get our money's worth by loading up on nigiri, so we placed our nigiri order first. The quality was mid, way too much rice compared to the fish. When we tried to order more, we were told we could only have five pieces total for the whole table. Imagine our shock If that's a rule, it should be made very clear upfront because we never would've come here if we knew. Since we weren't allowed more nigiri, we moved on to rolls which was a huge mistake. They were overloaded with imitation crab. We could barely get through them without gagging. Things got super weird when we asked for the check and still had half the roll left. The manager told us we could not get the check until we finished everything. SERIOUSLY. She stood there and watched us and made the whole thing feel weirdly tense. I've never been stared down while forcing myself to eat some nasty rolls. It was highkey disturbing and definitely a first. If you want decent all-you-can-eat sushi without the side of intimidation, do yourself a favor and go literally anywhere else. read more

My husband and I ordered takeout sushi on a Friday evening and were absolutely delighted with the presentation and freshness of our meal. We tried the jalapeño bombs, the Abel roll, and the Playboy roll, all of which were exceptional. The crunchy tempura on top of the Playboy roll complemented the creamy avocado, spicy krab, jalapeño, and sriracha sauce beautifully. The Abel roll featured spicy tuna, yellowtail, ponzu, sriracha, as well lemon slices. The fish to rice ratio was perfect, and we appreciated the clear containers that showcased the sushi. What happened to the original family that owned RK Sushi? Anyone know? The young woman (allegedly a daughter) who had different colored hair everytime I went and she was so personable? So I pay my rent in Mission Hills once a month and I take the opportunity to order from what USE to be my favorite sushi restaurant. I live in La Mesa so this is a treat for me. Tonight on my way home I was thinking I'm going to treat myself to RK takeout. I ordered 3 Vitamin C rolls (my absolute FAVORITE), miso soup, garlic edamame and a house salad that came to $61.09. First, I asked where the tip jar was and this loud ass male voice yelled from the sushi bar, "ITS OVER HERE". Whatever, I just wanted to order. Guys, this place is no longer owned by the same family. I've never been so dissatisfied and disappointed by anything from this restaurant until today. THE PORTIONS are no longer the same. My miso was a literal CUP...the salad is half the amount, the garlic edamame...where's the sauce? The sides matter! The sushi, I like mine cold and they put my miso soup with my sushi(please keep in mind I'm driving to La Mesa). Prepare yourself...it has CHANGED and not for the good. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There's no chairs in front of the sushi bar so there's no interaction there. We are always down for sushi anywhere so is my first time having all you can eat sushi I think we got it for $40 a person during one of their happy hours and we were stuffed. It seems like they pack on the rice a little bit, but even still, the quality of all of the options is great, I would highly recommend all of it is so filling! read more

This is a well kept secret in Mission Hills. The food here is excellent as is the service. June the owner is a sweetheart and all about providing exceptional and friendly customer service. They have a special when purchasing a large beer in that you will receive a hot sake for a penny. And it's decent sake. Not the junk you usually get on happy hour from those other guys. All the great reviews led me here and they were not wrong. It's a fairly small space, but I was there for a late lunch, so we had our pick of tables. I always like to start off with a flavored edamame and the spicy garlic version was perfect. We shared the shrimp tempura roll and the nibu roll as well as salmon nigiri. I've been coming here for years, good quality sushi at a reasonable price in the middle of Hillcrest. Sounds too good to be true? It's not! I always get the Sexy Roll and one of the salmon hand rolls. The menu is huge so it's fun to try a few other things too each time. If you're into see if they have a wonton soup that is outstanding. The employees were extremely friendly the moment we walked in the restaurant. The selection of rolls and items on the menu here is superb. We ordered; the Washington roll, orange crush roll (our favorite, it has spicy scallop but wasn't spicy at all), bbq beef bento box (the beef is like bulgogi, not too sweet but flavorful), my dad also ordered the seafood udon. He said it was good! I don't think you can beat the prices here as well. All this food cost us less than $140 (for 4 people, but good quality sushi.) The service also makes us want to come back. I wandered in after the grocery store next door didn't have any appetizing lunch items available. I ordered the dragon roll and a roll w spicy tuna topped w jalapeños (forgot the name of the roll) and edamame. The rolls were presented in the shape of a canoe, complete with wasabi, ginger, seaweed salad and cucumbers. Great presentation! The rolls were on the large side and delicious. They do have parking for about six cars. They have a restroom inside. Kid friendly, high chairs available as well. As you can see in my reviews there are very few times that I've given an establishment one star. It's been years so an updated review is in order. I always forget about this place, but when someone brings it up as a place to eat, my answer is always YES! The service is relaxed and welcoming. The food comes out as it's ready and at a speedy pace. Don't let the small tables fool you. We managed to fit three plates of sushi rolls, edamame, a bento box, and an extra miso soup plus water cups. Sushi is always an eyes is bigger than the stomach situation, but you just roll with it (ba-dum-bump). Anyway, I really enjoy the crispy rice/spicy tuna appetizer and really haven't had a roll I didn't like. Be careful coming into/going out of the driveways to the parking lot since it can get tight. My friend is a regular here and recommended this place, and it did not disappoint! My bf and I ordered the pink roll, spicy salmon roll, RK crispy roll and try this roll. Our friends got the takoyaki, fried rice, langostino lobster beach roll, mission roll and fire cracker roll. Everything was really fresh and delicious. The RK crispy roll was hot, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I love that they gave us sliced lemons as garnish - it tasted so yummy when eaten with the spicy salmon roll. Sliced cucumber garnish was also refreshing and seasoned well. Presentation was stunning. Service was really good; they kept checking on us and offering water refills. Servers were super nice. I don't go out for sushi much, especially since I have been trying to find a reasonable sushi spot in San Diego since Sushi Diner closed. The menu at RK sushi seemed to be pretty extensive with a lot of options, so my boyfriend and I decided to do takeout here. Our takeout order probably took about 15-20 minutes, and once we arrived, they had the order ready to go. My usual order at any sushi place always includes a hamachi nigiri, and here I tried their garlic mania roll which had hamachi, asparagus, and fried garlic on top along with their unagi roll. My boyfriend got a couple vegetarian rolls which he really liked, and we shared some garlic edamame. The size of the rolls here are good for the price. I do appreciate how they separate the rolls into their own containers which made it easy to eat right away (even though it seemed like a waste of plastic). I would recommend paying with cash here if you can (unsure if they give that option when doing takeout); I think when we paid online, there was a 3% surcharge attached to it which is kind of a bummer. I definitely would be back to try more rolls and dishes. Maybe we'll try to dine-in next time. They have their own parking lot, and the restaurant space looked very clean. read more

RK Sushi delivered my worst dining experience in San Diego, especially for sushi, and I've been here for 20 years. My partner and I were running errands and decided to stop for sushi, opting for RK Sushi since it was nearby. We arrived around 2 PM and used their touchpad system to order garlic edamame, nigiri (masago, albacore, toro), and a couple of hand rolls. While most of the food was mediocre, the toro nigiri was especially disappointing. My partner took a bite before I could warn her, only to find it chewy and rubbery. I tried it and ended up spitting it out--by far the worst toro I've ever had. When I mentioned it to the server, she said it might've been the cut. I didn't ask for compensation, just wanted them to know. Later, she returned with a small $3.49 "discount" on the $13.95 toro, which felt more insulting than helpful. After paying and tipping, I went back in to clarify that I hadn't wanted the discount. As a former restaurateur, I was baffled by the lack of concern from the chef/owner, who was on-site. We typically go for sushi at places like Hane, Azuki, or Harmony on Convoy, which I recommend. While RK Sushi is casual, there's no excuse for the poor fish quality and handling of customer concerns. I'd avoid this place at all costs; I wouldn't return even if it were free. San Diegans deserve better--quality fish, trained staff, and real attention to the dining experience.
