I love Road Runner Sports, I am a huge fan. In fact, I love them so much I have a VIP membership (it is totally worth it!). With the VIP membership, you receive discounts, and cash rewards. I always have some sort of store credit for next purchase lol. This was my first time visiting the Costa Mesa location. This time, I came for a special "meet and greet" with inspirational ultra runner, Andy Glaze. The whole event was so well organized. There was plenty of seatings, water bottles available, and the event ran in a smooth, timely manner. Andrea did a fantastic job of organizing the event, and was so friendly to all the guests. She let us know there was 10% extra discount for shopping the same day. Although I did not buy anything this time, I really enjoyed being at Road Runners. Variety of shoes, and apparel to choose from amongst other items. And I absolutely love that they hold these special events! read more

A large late 40s guy said I was stupid for not buying their extra "bring you shoes back if you don't like them" upsell. Rude, the shoes were great... Road Runner didn't make them though. I had The Worst Customer Service I've Ever Had here today. The greeter said hi asked my name I told him what I was looking for, he said we don't have those here. I told him I'd look at a different shoe. 45 minutes later I look at him & ask when I can get help, he says Oh. After waiting for 20+ minutes, we were finally helped by a male associate who smirked the entire time we were asking questions. I've visited several Roadrunner Sports locations, but my experience at the Costa Mesa store was by far the best, thanks to Jackson. He provided a level of service I haven't encountered at other branches. Jackson was incredibly knowledgeable, courteous, and patient, despite having to go back and forth to pull multiple pairs of shoes for me to try. Even though associates don't work on commission--which I've found sometimes leads to lackluster service elsewhere--Jackson's passion for helping customers truly stands out. He didn't hesitate to offer new recommendations when a brand wasn't a fit, even though it meant more work for him. I found my perfect pair of shoes thanks to his expertise and great attitude. We had a really disappointing experience at Road Runner Sports in Costa Mesa. We went on a weekday around 6 PM to buy shoes for both me and my husband and were completely ignored. No one greeted us when we walked in. We waited about 10 minutes before even getting into the queue, then another 10-15 minutes with no help, and ultimately left after 20-30 minutes of standing around with zero assistance. We decided to give it another try on Saturday around 11 AM. While we were greeted this time, we were told there was only one person ahead of us and still waited about 20 minutes. The wait times are unreasonable and the service feels disorganized and inattentive. Overall, really frustrating experiences both times. If you go, be prepared to wait a long time or just go super early. read more

The employee (young man) that assisted me at this location was rude and condescending when I asked about running shoes with inside arch support. He quite literally smirked at me, and set me straight that there aren't "arch supports" in running shoes, it's called "stability". He had another very young man trailing along with him who never even said hello when they first approached me, just kept staring...very strange encounter. You pay RoadRunner for a subscription for the best deal, and you can get these shoes for $139 for being a member, and they never have them in stock. I am DONE with this store. I have been shopping at the Costa Mesa Road Runner Sports for 2-3 years, primarily because of their large selection of shoes (I need wide) and I prefer, if possible, to shop at local stores rather than online. I have very high arches and use custom orthotics prescribed by my pediatrist so I need specific type of shoes. Most of the sales reps seem to have pretty good knowledge of the shoes. However in the past I have experienced the following at this store: ** Reps attempted to sell me their orthotics indicating they would work better than custom orthotics prescribed by a doctor. **Reps suggesting I buy their socks which would improve my issues from high arches. **Order shoes that were not in stock and I received the wrong size **Realizing the VIP program is a sham **Long wait times because of short staffing I recently went to the store to purchase a pair of athletic shoes and Offos recovery slides. They did not have my size in the Offos so they offered to order them and have them shipped. I specifically told the rep I needed size 8 in women's (as they are unisex). I received the Offos, however, they were the mens size. I returned to the store a second time and expressed my frustration. The rep apologized, returned the wrong size and ordered the correct size to have them shipped. He specifically told me he understands they are unisex and he ordered size 8 in womens. Within a few days I received the wrong size AGAIN. I returned to the store for the 3rd time and again expressed my frustration. The rep advised me this has been happening to other people. The rep then showed me their web site to prove the reason I was getting the wrong size was they don't carry my size in womens. The rep then suggested I exchanged them for something they had in stock. Based on this it appears the reps were intentionally ordering the wrong size just to get a sale??? I returned the Offos as well as the athletic shoes I had purchased. I went home and ordered them on Amazon and received the correct sizes the next morning!! Even with the poor customer service as well as some inappropriate sales tactics, I have been shopping there just for the selection of shoes. I don't blame the employees as it is clear these issues are caused by the management/corporate directions. From now I will either shop online, or at Snails Pace/Lucky feet where the employees are knowledgeable and appear to have the customers best interest in mind. read more

Lupe was very helpful. But the store/company strategy needs work. The rep is driven to attempt to sell shoes that may not even align with what the customer asked for, additionally, even while the customer may not have a desire for inserts, the rep is asked to spend time to create inserts causing more delay for the next customer. Please update your training to have the "whole package" if the customer does not know what they want - Plan B - for those that know what they want so they can get on with their day. It will be a game changer for 1 tier of customer, and a relief for the other. read more

Came in looking to buy a pair of running shoes for myself, I asked if there's anyone who could assist me for a pair of ASICS when I came in and then one of the staff members said they'll be someone to help you shortly but wasn't helped for over 45 minutes. I decided to leave because it seemed no one was going to help me. It's very unfortunate, since the other road runner sports have very good customer service. Came into the store today to buy new trainers. I was greeted by a very welcoming young man who seemed very knowledgeable & took the time to get me fitted. However, my unpleasant experience was with my fit expert, Shannon. At first, when she was trying to sell me extra's, she seemed nice. When I declined the extra's as I was only looking into new shoes, her attitude completely shifted. She shoved the receipt into my shoe box & walked away. I also declined their rewards program which thank god I did because I will definitely be taking my business elsewhere. Her attitude and lack of professionalism was very uncalled for. This is my second time attempting to get this issue resolved regarding a plan I want canceled that charges me $50 a year that wasn't disclosed to me in the first place, and I've spoken to other people who are experiencing the same thing. One of your employees either current or former is signing people up for this without disclosing it to them. I called 6+ times during OPERATING hours and no one has called me back even with leaving a message. It wasn't until I left a negative review and conveniently I was finally contacted back within hours of that review. The employee told me she would cancel it and refund me so I deleted that review. Then the same day, I was charged again that $50 a year thing which I can't even tell you what it is because I NEVER agreed to it. The employee at the time only asked me for my phone number and email and frankly seemed impatient when I was second guessing buying the shoes. As a side note. On top of this issue regarding these charges, why is no one picking up the phone during operating hours after I called 6+ times within 3 days to get this handled? Bruce was incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, and prompt. He is a fellow runner and gave me the sage advice on shoes, socks, and how their complicated VIP program works. I would continue to shop there just because of him. I have had mixed experiences with other employees in the past. Some didn't know the difference from a neutral, stability or motion control shoe and will sell you the wrong shoe. Fortunately they are great at replacing the shoe, with their VIP program. Horrible customer service locally, and even worse online. Locally - Despite the store being nearly empty, no sales associates were available to grab a shoe in my size. That required being on a waitlist. Online - VIP account is a sham. Account was hacked, rewards were stolen, and the "competent" online customer service advised they could do nothing after I waited on hold for 38 minutes. Apparently I gave my email and password to a stranger who then stole the $64 rewards I had. Not a large sum, but it's the concept. Beware your information may not be safe in their systems, as apparently not only can it be hacked but then Roadrunner makes it your fault! Cheers, was a loyal customer for ages but no more. I visited this Costa Mesa location to buy a specific sandal for my mom. Immediately a representative, Guadalupe, came up to me and tried to sell me on some other sandals that were "less expensive" but when I asked about the prices, it turned out that they were both $60. This put me on alert, I figured she had ulterior motives other than just to help me. I went back to look for the HOKA sandals, and she says "by the way these are final sale." I asked for her to clarify and she stated that once the sandals left the store they can no longer be returned or exchanged. I've been a customer for many years and I have never heard of this. I asked her to check and she came back and said that her lead, Jackson, confirmed. I asked if the sandals were too small or big if they can be returned and Guadalupe said no unless I was a member. At this point, I felt pressured to buy a gift card instead. As I walked out, I checked the receipt for the return policy and it stated that items can be returned within 60 days. At this point I felt upset that they lied to me and I wanted no business with this company. I went back to return the gift card and they said it was not possible. Their lead Jackson then stated that the sandals can be returned as long as my mom doesn't try on the sandal. This is ridiculous. How can someone check if a sandal fits them if they can't try them on! I called corporate immediately after and let them know that both Guadalupe and Jackson used the term "final sale" with me. They confirmed I could in fact return sandals if they didn't fit. I should've called corporate right in the store. I left a complaint about both of them. I'm waiting on a call back from them. I dont want any business with this store and will ask for my money back from the gift card. Will give an update. Also, I'm not surprised this store is getting a lot of poor reviews. read more

This was my first experience at a Road Runner. I'm completely blown away by the knowledge and customer service that was provided to me and my lady during our visit. Jake and Josh set a new bar on what we see as awesome customer service! I came in looking for durable running shoes for an upcoming 13 week training program. Not only did they show interest but also showed their experience in similar competitive experiences. From the four chosen shoes I loved 2 of them. After joining the Subscription, I may just come back for another pair! We had such a positive experience that we decided to get my lady a new pair of shoes as well. She was welcomed with the same outstanding attention to detail with fit, feel and purpose of what shoes she wanted. Chris is in the Costa Mesa store at 1835 Newport Blvd. He is hands down AWESOME! He is patient, knowledgeable, and kind., He really knows all the different shoes and is quick to guide you to the right ones rather than talking your ear off about them all. With many other sales people in the past in this store, it has been a process taking time and lots of talk, trying on, comparing, asking questions... it took forever to find the right shoe, evaluate the dfferences and find a comfort level that I was ending up with the right shoe for me. The return policy where you can try the shoe and return it for credit if it doesn't work for you has always been what I had to rely on (GREAT POLICY!!) to end up with the right shoe and I've returned several pairs in the past in my attempt to get to the right shoe for me. CHRIS however, quietly, without much fanfare or "selling", found the right shoe for me within about 20 minutes and brought me another couple of pairs so I could feel and know that the right pair was indeed the right pair. What a difference. He is humble too.. when I gushed about how different and exceptional he is to the manager, he for sure appreciated it, I could tell by his surprised smile,, altho he was very humble about it all. And he made sure I got the best price and deal possible. They don't come better than CHRIS! Ask for him... you can't do better in all the ways that are rare and hard to spot. My first experience at Road Runner. I decided to check it out since I work nearby and needed new running shoes. Several friends recommended it, and I was impressed by the selection and the complimentary assessment they offered. However, my experience got off to a rough start. I was a bit surprised that it took over 10 minutes for me to be acknowledged after walking in, even though the store wasn't busy. Eventually, one of the staff (a cool young guy) approached me. He took down my info while helping another customer and told me it would be 10-15 minutes. Unfortunately, it ended up taking longer than expected. I even overheard him telling a colleague to help me out, which I appreciated, but it did make me feel a bit overlooked. When his colleague finally assisted me, he was friendly, but honestly, it felt like he was a little tired, which I totally understand (it was toward the end of the day). By that point, though, I wasn't as excited about the assessment--I just wanted to get my shoes and go. Overall, I think there's room for improvement in terms of customer experience--especially in being more aware of customers when they come in and setting the right expectations upfront. I am posting this unfortunate review after receiving very poor customer service specifically at the Santa Monica location. The day I went in, the one worker I encountered was extremely rude. I have contacted the company via phone on 17 different occasions starting in July through September, 2025, and after many promises of action, I have yet to receive any response. I am incredibly frustrated by the lack of communication and the broken promises of follow-up. Frankly, I am very surprised at the decline in their customer service. I went today to get the full experience. My girlfriend has done It in the past, so she wanted to take me to get fitted for some new running shoes for my birthday. I live really close by, but have never been in. Since I have never been, I didn't really know what the experience entails, and it's been over 2 years for my girlfriend so she forgot how the process works. We walk in, and we were not greeted or told anything by anyone at the front. We waited and made eye contact with several team members and we never got acknowledged. I thought nothing of It at first because I thought maybe they're busy. It must've been about ten minutes that passed and we started walking towards the front to see if we can get help. It wasn't until then that we saw the check in sign (which is not in the front of the store. it's in the middle of the store). Being my first time there I would've never thought that's what I have to look for. We saw the sign but no one was next to It to check us in. We are sitting there waiting, and a family of 3 walks in and gets immediately greeted and checked in ahead of us. I immediately got upset and the guy comes to check us in we tell him what just happened, and in a snarky tone he points at the sign, laughs, and said "that's why there's a sign here". I got very irritated and proceeded to wait. He took our name, didn't acknowledge my frustration, and just walked away. The family of 3 got help before me. I felt disregarded, and belittled due to the rudeness and ignorance of the employee. I was about to spend over $200, but because of this experience I cancelled my name, and I took my business to the mission viejo location. I was willing to drive over 20min immediately after, just for better customer service. I didn't want to give my business road runner at all, but my girlfriend was paying for It and decided to give It another shot. On the contrary mission viejo experience was better. I walked in the front door at mission viejo and was immediately greeted and the check in sign is visible from the parking lot. The sign was right by the front door. We spent $250. Might not be much to a big company, but she saved up for this and it's an investment for a lot of people. The experience was so bad in Costa Mesa that I still have a bad taste in my mouth for the company. I could see the value in the business and was excited for the experience, but the customer service needs tremendous work. read more

If you are a person of color avoid this store! They will ignore you until they are forced to help you out, and once you are helped out, it seems like they do not want to be there. I have been here more than three times and every single time, several employees including what seems to be the manager, all ignore you.
