A few days ago my mom told me we would be meeting some other family members in Bastrop for dinner. She gave me the choice of where to go. Why not try the 38th best burger in Texas? I've had Counter Cafe and Alamo Springs; with the anticipation of having a cream cheese jalapeno burger we drove towards the Roadhouse. The burger itself seems like a novelty somewhere in between fried oreos and Franklin's BBQ espresso sauce concoction. Thankfully it turned out better than the last two. We got there just before the crowd spilled outside onto the nice size patio. The beers were cold and the service friendly. We started off with Roadhouse's version of layered dip. Great flavors from the black bean, queso, and pico. The majority of the table ordered burgers. My uncle and I with the Texas Monthly #38, bacon cheeseburger for mom, hamburger for dad, veggie sandwich for the wife, and the "Jack" for my aunt. Not a complaint could be found among the group. The fresh jalapenos with the cream cheese was really good; like forehead sweating good. Jenny noticed that Roadhouse actually tries in the vegetarian category trying to please all guests with some decent options. I have to point out the buns used here and darn near every place in Austin are from Houston's own Sheila P's bakery. The cheddar jalapeno is the best bun on the planet. The entire group had a great time so Roadhouse definitely gets some praise for his visit. read more

If I love anything at the Roadhouse, it's damn near everything! The pork green chili is *out of this world*! Especially when it's cold outside but I've ordered it even when it's been blazing hot outside too. Try it on the fries... omg! The Portabella Mushroom burger is my favorite sandwich... dripping in balsamic vinaigrette and grilled to yummyliciousness. It's a monster and I get full before I can even get a chance to finish it. I think I'm gonna cry... It gets busy and full pretty fast; however, the longest I've ever waited was probably no more than 20 minutes. And that's not bad considering the place is somewhat small. Plus a half a star. Nothing significant to report. The major difference from my last visit to this visit was that my burger didn't come out like a hockey puck. My burger was over cooked to my request of medium rare. But the burger was still fine. Actually better than my first visit. Still don't find it to be a mind blowing burger places but it's fun place. It was OK. Not bad but not great. We had the queso, chips, and salsa to start and flavor wise it was the best bite of the night. They are generous with the chips but stingy with the salsa. It was gone when the chips still looked full. My blackened chicken sandwich was OK. Tasted like average cafeteria fare. The fries were hot and crispy so that's a plus. My husband got the Jack burger. The jalapeño bun was extremely mealy. The meat didn't taste like anything and was way overcooked (they say medium well). Not impressed. I guess there are not that many options in Bastrop, especially open Sunday evening but I didn't think this place was worthy of more than a 3 star average. read more

Wow!!! From one foodie to you, this place is money! Today I had the Cream cheese Jalapeño burger with avocado and bacon! It was a religious experience!!! Like can I get an amen, jumpin pews, shouting hallelujah from the pulpit good kinda burger!!! The burger was perfectly prepared, topped with a more than generous slice of cream cheese, holding perfectly grilled Jalapeño slices, perfectly ripe avocado topped with beautiful bacon! The sour dough bun was fresh and light... Simply amazing!!! Yes it was my first time to Roadhouse! It was so good we drove back over last night from Lockhart for dinner!!! I had another Cream cheese Jalapeño burger add bacon, avocado, sautéed opinions, sautéed mushrooms and Pepper Jack cheese... Had the peppers sautéed as well on an onion bun. First, PLEASE don't think this is really 2/5, but it fits the Yelp description perfectly, "Meh. I've experienced better." Roadhouse has a great menu and the atmosphere is great, even down to the unpaved parking lot. It looks like a quaint actual roadhouse with a menu heavy on burgers and other Texas classics. If only ALL of the execution was this good and was as good as it smells once you walk into the place. The food was a mixed bag. The chips, queso, and salsa were first rate. Darned good in fact and were better than many Mexican restaurants. Burgers? Definitely underwhelming. While the currently popular sweet kolache bun didn't disappoint, the meat itself did. Definitely undercooked and underseasoned. Some more time on the grill along with salt and pepper would be welcomed. The spicy BBQ sauce was good, but obviously from a commercial food service vendor as it tasted EXACTLY like the spicy BBQ sauce at Sam's Boat. And the fries? Just sad. Undercooked frozen food service fries. On another note, the menu described the Western burger as coming with cheddar cheese, spicy BBQ sauce, and grilled onions. No mention of the "surprise" addition of a full setup of lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles. While our waiter was a nice guy and more than friendly, service isn't a strength either. Drinks regularly went unfilled. In fact, one drink wasn't even delivered to the table. Our waiter also brought mayo and mustard to the table, but I had to go to another table to get ketchup. And while we arrived over an hour before closing, most of the tables were piled up with dirty plates. This place has so much potential that it pains me to write out a less than stellar review. Great all American food, everything was very very good. Waiters/waitresses were quick but friendly. Food was 5 starts for the food type and price. I have 4 stars because They need to work on the amount of tables over inside, just too many. And work on the cleanness (windows, floors etc) and perhaps another person bussing the tables. Small spot with good food. I had the green chili burger and it was slappin!. I mean I could eat the green chili by bowl full. The fries were hot and crispy and the beer was cold. The only negative I can give is for the single restroom and not asking how I wanted my beef. One person in our group was adamant about well done and the rest of us were damned to the same. A biker cut me off and took the parking space that I was going to pull into right in front. Not nice biker dude. Place was packed at 12 noon on Monday. They asked our preference and sayng "first available" got us instantly outside on the patio at a metal garden table in the hot sun. They are very efficient and organized. We were greeted very quickly and our order taken by a very friendly server. We ordered the chips and salsa for appetizer. Good except there is not enough salsa for all the chips they gave us. We got the burgers and generous side of fries very quickly. I do not like to make a ceremony out of a meal so the efficiency and smart service is a huge plus! The burger was not the best I have had but solid. It appears to be a pre fab burger with built in char lines and has a backyard BBQ smokey character. B+ This place runs like a well oiled machine. Had one of the tastiest salads I have ever had today at the Roadhouse. The Chipotle Chicken Salad with pico de gallo instead of salad dressing was amazing. With warm black beans and various cheeses this salad hit the spot. Kimbra, my wife, had the Fiesta Salad with pico de gallo and commented how wonderful and strange it was to have a salad that was "Hot". Another great meal at Amy's place. read more

After a day at a Renaissance Festival this place seemed like a dream that offered vegetarian food. I was so happy to find it. Our group of 6 was promptly seated and had our drink ordered taken. When the drinks arrived we were all ready to order. I ordered the vegetarian Mushroom Burger with a side salad. The salad came out super fast and was exactly what you'd expect. The food came out about 15-20 minutes later, and unfortunately I got the Mushroom burger with meat. I honestly couldn't blame anyone because there was very little distinguishing the two burgers and after a long day I might not have made that clear. Anyway, I took it to the front and explained what happened and a new burger with no meat was made. The server was extremely nice and apologetic about the situation. I got my burger pretty fast, this time without the meat, and it was delicious. Again, I'm not placing any blame on the server or cook as I don't think the two burgers were easily distinguished and it was an honest mistake. Overall, the food was very good and I enjoyed everything I ate. I can honestly say that next year when we come back this way for the Renaissance Festival that I'd recommend this restaurant to our group. read more

This was our first time here. We were greeted with a smile and told we could sit wherever we wanted. It's a beautiful day so of course we chose outside. We were immediately asked for our drink order and it came out quickly despite it being crowded. We chose to split the bleu cheese burger. It was cooked perfectly and was the best burger I've eaten since they tore down our favorite burger joint at home. Ask for Erichea if you can. She is so attentive and fast!!!! This place is one of those "hole-in-the-wall" gems!! Burgers the size of your head, great seasonings, cooked perfectly to my liking!! The wife ordered a portebella mushroom burger which she scarfed it down like a homeless giant!! I had the avocado burger with bacon, on an onion bun!! Man, that was a combo!! Our friends loved their burgers and fries as well. The coffee was fresh and hot! Service was great, Raven was attentive and prompt, friendly and smiled a lot! Great spot to have a beer and a burger if you're headed to Houston. This is a quaint little dive bar but it's definitely refreshing to have pieces of Americana in the form of a Roadhouse keeping the past alive. Never again drove from Austin to bastrop just for a burger at this place I called ahead of time to do a pick up order the person how answered the phone said it was going to be 20 minutes I said ok we get there I parked at there number spot called said I was there 30 minutes had passed already the person who answered said it was not ready that it looked like 5 or 10 minutes I said ok 15 minutes later nothing I called again she said it was a few more minutes when I mentioned I had already been waiting 45 minutes she changed it to it will be right out wait another 5 minutes and nothing so we left mad ass hell it was 3 burger order with fries and drink they didn't call me till almost 25 minutes after I left that my order was ready so no I will never be going back there again the service sucks read more

Whenever I am near Bastrop I plan accordingly! I have been here a slew of times and the ONLY thing I ever have here IS a burger...any burger. I do admit even though I have tried many of them, I love the plain old fashion burger on an onion bun with ALL the fixings and SWEET potato fries :) :) But I confess I'm not a big cheese person (I know its hard to believe coming from someone who lived in the midwest half her life :0) They have about six or more hamburger choices and no upcharge for a jalapeno cheese, onion or sourdough bun. I was not upcharged for my sweet potato fries either!! Desserts look great, but we have never had enough room to even share one. This place is small and while they have plenty of outdoor seating they do not have fans or misters, so I guarantee it will get hot during daylight hours. We ate outside one evening (no other choice) and the road noise left a lot to be desired too...so I highly recommend you tough it out...order a beer or milkshake and wait, its worth it! BTW-Don't be shy-like another review stated, seat yourself or grab someone and tell them you want to wait for a table. If you sit outside (after what I recommended) I would still go in and grab a menu, this place is pretty casual. read more

Parking: Large parking area. Won't have any issues with parking at all. Time and Day: Ate on a Saturday afternoon around 5:00 PM and they are quite busy. What makes it worse is that the indoor seating is limited, but they do have several tables out on the porch. Just keep that in mind if it is raining as you may have issues finding a seat. Food: I had the Destruction Burger with the Onion bun which includes cheddar and swiss cheese, avocados, bacon, Pico de Gallo and queso. It was okay and decent. I did love the Onion bun as it was soft and delicious. However, I wouldn't order this burger again. Service: They were pack and looked like they needed extra help. It took a while for someone to come by and hand me the menu when I sat down. Then the waitress didn't refill our drinks, so we had to constantly try to find her and signal for her to come to notice us. Overall, they were slow with the service. Price: Average price for the burgers. The price is around $10 for a burger with French fries. I added a screenshot of the burger options in the photo section.
